Re:Creators was a show that had a spunky magical girl top the grimdark fantasy lady knight, explode in the middle of a dumpster, and the main antagonist got defeated by mc recoalescing her hostie for wild tantric sex in a bubble universe.
It also had Yellow Tumblr with Catgirls and was mostly about issues of depiction of anime industry in Shirobako.

Underrated/Underexplored anime trope: Magical Girl-type character in a shounen which is an actual high level competent combatant and overall taken seriously in the world’s power system and narrative, just that the source and aesthetics of their power are rooted in magical girl tropes.

extended magical girl transformations are lovely and all, but there's something sort of romantic about a magical girl who transforms in an instantaneous flash of light.
imagine, a magical girl who transforms and detransforms when she's bored, or mildly stressed. sitting in a waiting room, flash, magical girl, flash, normal girl, flash, magical girl again, and so on. someone enters the room; flash, she's a mundane girl again. she realizes it's her enemy; flash, she's a magical girl again, and this time she has her sword.

a SPR AU based off the basic concept of the anime Re:Creators, where it's multiple Aus thrown together in a new universe (with maybe their au creators, idrk), would be really dope honestly. Especially if it was a collab au.
If you don't know the basic concept of Re:Creators (Which is the most I know of it, I've been meaning to watch it but idk what streaming service has it yet) is to my knowledge (which isn't much) basically: multiple fictional characters from different medias, like games, manga, novels, and shows, get brought to the real world and split into two groups. the Anti-Creator group/the bad guys (who are characters from mostly darker media that wants to punish their creators for making their stories dark and make people [the characters in the story] go through trauma) and the Pro-Creator Group (which mostly consists of characters from lighter media). and I think, if I remember this from where I heard of this show, each character is supported to be an homage of the archetypes they start off as (like: Mamika Kirameki who is an homage to magical girls)

I've been going back and reading what I posted about Re:CREATORS to remind myself in preparation for a bit I'm doing on a casual group panel this Otakon. There were two things that apparently bothered me about the show:
>Mamika not being a steelman for magical girls as I understood them >The fact that none of the other characters except Meteora were smart enough to argue back against Magane – and worse, that Hiroe seemed to think she was mostly right.
Seven years later, and I think I probably overstated the case against Mamika.
I still think that neither Hiroe or Aoki had much more than a cursory understanding of modern magical girls. Mamika really does seem to be backwards-constructed from Madoka and maybe Nanoha. As a result, Re:CREATORS is engaging with much less sophisticated ideas than it could be. Nonetheless, I should've made a more serious effort to engage with the show on its own terms. While Mamika is still unusually dumb, none of the characters in Re:CREATORS are the kind of steelman I seemed to have in mind. Moreover, her ultimate sacrifice is framed as incredibly noble and a vindication of her sense of justice even if it ultimately turns out to be pointless and just gets used by Magane to drive through yet another wedge. Ultimately, Mamika's sense of justice really was strong enough to survive her terrible shock and ordeal – in fact they ultimately strengthened it. Again, shades of Madoka.
Hiroe himself puts it this way while trying to explain himself to someone who stopped watching halfway through because they felt Re:Creators didn't take the worldview of Precure (and Anpanman? What?) seriously:
If you’d continued watching, you’d see this isn’t the case. [Mamika] is the embodiment of justice and sincerity, which drives the whole story forward. That’s our way of respecting the spirit of things like Precure.
This just makes it clear he doesn't really know what he's talking about, but in any case the sentiment aligns with my reading of the show.
Still, in the end,
#mamikadeservedbetter2024
Me: Becomes annoyed at magical girls written by people who don’t understand modern magical girl shows (but saw Madoka Magica).
Also me: Watches like half of Pretty Cure Fresh and considers himself able to cast aspersions on people for not understanding magical girls.
Also also me: Defends Madoka Magica to the death.

Rewatching Re:Creators has me really wishing the show made a bigger splash. Unfortunately, being trapped in Amazon Prime jail means most people passed it over, which totally sucks because like... the characters, the concept, the animation, the music, the twists, goddamn. Feel like more people should be going crazy over it. Might make a list of reasons why you should watch it, but for now, have this gif dump.
