I watched the first three episodes of Re:Creators and I think one of the things that really stuck out to me was that it would have been so much better if it had been fanfic of some kind instead. Obviously that would create a whole host of problems, but having each of these characters be an actual character that the audience can be expected to be familiar with would have added a much-needed layer to the whole thing.

Part of it is that it would allow them to skip some of the setup. We would understand a character to be part of the resistance because we had seen them be part of the resistance in some prior work. We wouldn't need to have backstory introduced to us before we could see people reacting to it.

Obviously part of Re:Creators is that they're interacting with the people that created them, and this would take it from fanfic to RPF, unless you wanted to wholesale replace their original creators with fictional ones.

And obviously you'd pretty much never get the rights from multiple media properties to do this.

So fanfic it is, and I think a very deliberate fanfic that picked its characters and creators carefully would be wonderful. I'd want characters who are in tension with their creators somehow, relationships that would have plenty of meat for the audience to chew on, sketches of not just character archetypes, but creator archetypes as well.

(I also think that it would be hilarious to do all that, then include a character from a tabletop game, one that was important to only like five people, who for no particularly reason gets to live alongside the juggernauts of popular media.)

I might eventually finish Re:Creators, it's just competing with a lot of other things. I've heard that it's a meditation on creation and creator, but so far it seems like it's that only some of the time, and the rest of the time is cross-genre fight scenes, so I'm going to take the anime fans with a grain of salt, since it seems very common for "this is so deep" to be applied to shows which are, on viewing, pretty shallow.

Metaphor Refantazio X Re:Creators crossover could be cool

Like as someone who is slowly making their way through the game, it has those themes of both the separation and interconnection between fiction and reality. And Re:Creators is about how fictional stories inspire people in real life, and the struggles of being someone who creates their own fictional world. And other stuff but I’m not making an organized essay right now.

Basically I am listening to Layers, and remembering Meteora, Alicetaria, Selesia, and Altair because of how their aesthetics fit in with metaphor.

The Meteora(delusional design) from the mid season summary kind of makes me think of Will

Alicetaria kind of gives me vibes of both Strohl and Hulkenberg.

Altair and Louis would be problematic besties I think

Re:Creators was a show that had a spunky magical girl top the grimdark fantasy lady knight, explode in the middle of a dumpster, and the main antagonist got defeated by mc recoalescing her hostie for wild tantric sex in a bubble universe.

It also had Yellow Tumblr with Catgirls and was mostly about issues of depiction of anime industry in Shirobako.
