"Mambar Pierrette" (2023)
Mambar Pierrette is one of the most extraordinary, unexpected takes on parables. Here the holiness not from grand gestures and giving your life to the poor, but from the mundanity of life as a poor woman in Africa. The title is the main characters name. That way, she's elevated to a very important figure (almost like Job in "The Book of Job" or saints in hagiographical texts). However, that's not where her importance ends.
Mambar is a seamstress, but actually she holds much more status in her village - she's the center of social interactions. She knows everyone, and everyone always comes by to chat. That makes her hyper aware of her surroundings - she never misses anyone going next to her store - but also aware of her economic status. Everyone says they don't have money, everyone asks for a discount, but she knows that they do have money, and she doesn't. When she comes to give a dress to her client, she hears a new TV and sees a return-to-school kit, while she herself doesn't even have a phone and has to take her child's money to buy them anything for school.
This is a fantastic film, which deserves to be seen by more people. A terribly sad, quiet story filled with suffering.

LFF2023: The list of films
I should have started from the beginning, so to understand this blog read my mission statement back in 2021 when I thought this was a great idea :-D and then feel free to peruse my reviews of the films, all listed below, and from the previous 2 years as well.
I will link to my musings about each film from here as I progress and I hope to refine them as I revisit them in the future, apologies about the silly mistakes, I am writing of the cuff mostly on my free time, away from my job that has nothing to do with film.
Any comments and suggestions can be done to my twitter X account @allyear_lff ( https://twitter.com/allyear_lff ) and I believe comments are open here in Tumblr.
