So I’ve been thinking of Nautolans recently because of my ocs, and I just thought I would share a cute thought

I think that Nautolans, even though they have a very different kind of reproductive cycle, have a very interesting relationship with unborn mammal young, because they are ‘in the water’ for their development.

Trying to tell them that developing mammal foetuses aren’t water creatures doesn’t work. They’re like nope, till it’s born it’s one of us.

There is a Nautolan Healer in the Temple who specialised in interspecies obstetrics to treat the citizens who work in and around the Temple, and a lot of the Nauts in the Medicorps will say things like ‘you are carrying oceans inside of you rn’ or some shit. and in their eyes that is like carrying something life giving and very holy, you know?

And obviously mothers who are tired and fucking feel like they are carrying oceans inside of them are like ‘you don’t say’ (sarcastic) because fuck poetry, they would like the ocean outside of them now, please.

Also some Nautolans say that the mammals coming out of the waters and not going back in means they have a lot in common with those Nautolans who never quite get back to the water after aging out of the time when they are in tank because they havenMt properly developed arms and legs yet.

Low economic demographic nauts on Coruscant or other places with water scarcity have a very hard time necessary getting water time, and some have evolved over the course of generations on Coruscant to not need as much. They can survive with water showers and don’t need to sleep in their tanks.

Ziv has three helix-piercings in each ear in which she had put cooper rings. While she likes them aesthetically, it is also a clear sign for people to notice that she is definitive not a animal or a non-sentient pet and that she is person enough to actually invest in clearly noticeable (as on the highest part of her body that are her ears) Bodyart. Due to her pelt Ziv has no tattoos, however she usually lets the symbol for "healer" shaved in the outer layer of her fur on her chest when she is on Planets where the literacy is not so high and she still needs show to people that they can come to her for help and support in medical matters. The symbol usually needs around eight weeks to grow out completly and that is usually the signal for Ziv to change locations to another planet.

In her inquisitor AU, Ziv has none of the piercings beside the septumpiercing for obvious reasons.

Biology student here, I'd say the biggest issue with your species are the antlers. No mamalian predator has those, and it seems unlikely they could develop. Your species already has fangs and a strong jaw, which can be used for attack and defense, as well as the rituals and fights you mentioned. The antlers would be a waste of resources as well as possibly hindering their mobility, not good when you need to earn your next meal

They're more for aesthetic than real purpose anyway. I still kinda want them so its there like, an alternative that wouldn't be as unweidly? I figured that normal animals do weird things that don't appear to serve any purpose other than to look cool to their mates and actually make their lives worse outside of it (e.g. fiddler crabs arms and peacock tails).

I considered horns to begin with - really small ones - but considering this was a species set in the world of mass effect, I didn't think horns and envirosuits would mesh well. They'd need like, specialized helmets or something.

I figured if they were small enough to not really affect the helmet that I don't exactly want them. I won't say the antlers are completely non-negotiable but I already had some interesting concepts for the antlers in their modern times.

I can easily make them more ram-horn shaped since they curl up by their heads instead of extending outwards like real antlers do. If they're curled up, they shouldn't be in the way as much when hunting and stuff.

I just had a crazy and kinda weird au idea. What if the Housebroken half animal grandkids somehow ended in the world of Splatoon after the Return of the Mamalians event, and nixed the fuzzy oosze and sanitized ooze from octo expansion and created more beings like them, taking refugee in a Cave Forest and calling themselves Animalians, and The grandkids would become their leaders and the idols, especially Isa and Dolores since those two remind me of the squid sisters? And they spy on both Squids and Octoling and even befriend some of them and go to the Squid city in disguise and become fans of The Squid Sisters, Off The Hook, and Deep Cut? And dream of a world of peace between species?

Theres two sides to this. And only one of them makes sense.

One is that people think shes dumb because she disagrees with Al-An on the human species. Because yes, Reddit bros really wanted a Black woman to spend the whole game talking about how inferior and unevolved she is. Its a lot of transhumanist bullshit, and people think theyd be totally fine with having every minor though broadcasted and recive like that wouldnt realistically drive a human to insanity. Those peoole are not worth listening to.

I feel like the writing just dosent really give her oportunities to look “smart” and more often she just acts like she is without any proof. Now, normally the proof would be the gameplay. But its an almost universal opinion that Robin feels extereamly detached from the player. So anything inteligent the player does, dosent register as something Robin did in universe. Also I belive a lot of it also comes from the fact that a lot of this information isnt conveyed unless you go out of your way to read the PDA and with how much of an adjustment she is from the first game. A lot of players including myself at the time its preferable to just sort of pretend shes not there. I had no idea she was meant to be a scientist until the endgame on my first playthrough.

Really it comes down to her interactions with Al-An, not because of him specifically, but because thats the only time she really gets to be a character and those prsent too many conflicting ideas. Shes clearly sentimental, opting to explain things in rather flowery language instead of simple objective terms, but she dosent come of as very emotionally inteligent either, misunderstanding very clear questions, being impatient with someone who dosent know any better, and provoking people at bad times. Shes presented as maybe kind of goofy in one conversation and extreamly irritable in the next. I guess that more than anything, she comes of as erratic and childish.

It dosent help that they cut so many lines a few that had her make more scientifical analysis, one line confirmed she was a polyglot. Fuck dont get me started on how good the exchange about obsesion was. And even in those, the one major thing thats just off is that shes suposedly dedicated herself to learning about exoplanet life and had been waiting her whole life to meet an inteligent alien. And she almost never asks Al-An any questions about anything. The only time I can recal is when she asks him why they needed to cure the karaah. But you never hear her asking weather their mamalian, if they reproduce, do they eat anything, nothing. Hes the one asking all the questions and most of them end in her feeling insulted which makes sense but she never tries ti get payback for it, like idk ask how they poop or something.

She seems uninterested in most things around her and presents so many conflicting traits that she just registers as a brat and with little evidence to the contrary, its easey to relate that to her being uninteligent.

It’s so weird that people make this argument that Robin comes off as “stupid” and not like a knowledgeable scientist and I am thinking…guys, guys did you read the XenoworX PDA? Does this look like a serious company to you?

Robin is perfectly in tune with being someone who does like science and exploration, but is also silly and playful about it and she was part of a company that didn’t take themselves too seriously in the first place. Sam is the one who was actually the nerdy stuck up scientist, not Robin. Their difference is so important and highlighted by the plot.

Outlaws/ Outlaw Minions

Outlaws are a race of creatures seen throughout Western Mudos, most notably within the Mongo River Valley. Technically speaking, Outlaws are not a singular race but rather a generic grouping that applies to several distantly related species. Most Outlaws are bipedal and share a multitude of Mamalian and Reptilian features.

Outlaws tend to reside in small settlements and camps found within abandoned structures and vacant areas. Outlaw society centers around a singular leader who is protected buy a large group of Outlaw minions. Outlaw leaders are often elected based on size, strength, brutality, and a multitude of other survivalist traits. Some Outlaws have also managed to tame wild Sewer Slegs and craft a wide variety of ramshackle weapons.

Due to an immense scarcity of resources on Mudos, many Outlaws have since turned to crime forming massive criminal syndicates that currently dictate over varying sections of the Mongo River. While a majority of Outlaws reside in nomadic gangs some Outlaws either integrate into Clakker society or live in small family groups in complete isolation.

By the Maker, Stixx’il’than, you won’t believe how adorable humans can be.

You need to put yourself though the acadamy as soon as your maturation cycle is completed so you can meet some of these amazing beings.

We knew humans would pack bond with anything but no one told me just how strongly they can bond with you!

A human crewmate of mine, Human-Sally, and her mate, Human-John, pack bonded with me almost as soon as I came aboard the ship. Human-Sally saw how nervous I was, because it was my first day aboard and things were not running as smootly as the simulations we encounter at the academy. She made me an offer of a social encounter for the potential of alleviating my concerns and the promise of pack-bonding. She referred to it as “getting a drink after work.”

A most joyous experience I cannot hesitate to strongly recommend.

This sigular experience with Human-Sally led to further pack-bonding experiences. Through Human-Sally, I encountered her mate, Human-John. He pack-bonded with me and they have both admit they have come to consider me almost as part of their brood. They called me “Family friend,” to use the human phrase. It means they had truly pack-bonded with me and would protect me as well as they would protect one of their own brood.

Five cycles ago, things changed.

Did you know humans can birth more than one young at a time? This was a shock to me.

I learned this fact when Human-Sally went into labour. I had to aid her in reaching the medical bay and then she did not want me to leave.

Have you ever seen a mamalian species give birth? I had studied this as part of my emergency medical training at the academy, but to see it in person is a strange experience. Their brood is within their body, not in eggs. Because of this their bodies are actually capable of gestating more than one young at a time. They refer to this as “twins” Meaning two larvae born at the same time.

Humans are quite unique among the mamalian species. their young are so small, so helpless after giving birth. Thye cannot even lift their own heads. They have no coordination control. They are incapable of even their most basic self care for at least a full cycle. They are truely helpless creatures upon their emergence into the world.

Something strange occured to me when I saw these tiny and helpless creatures. Just as our Matron-caste would defend the eggs within the hatchery, I felt the strong instinct to defend these human-brood from any potential threats.

I know it should not be, as I am of the worker-caste. Yet the impossibility is possible. These human brood seemed to implant these instincts upon me.

Human sally bestowed upon me a great honour. There is no direct translation in our language. She named me as a “Godparent.” it is a marvellous human word which encapsulates so many things. To abbreviate, it means; “Guardian,  who shall take an interest in the brood upbringing and personal development, to offer mentorship or claim legal guardianship of the child if anything should happen to the parents.” Surely the highest honour any human can bestow upon another. Even though I am not of their clan, or even their race, they trust that I can sucessfully protect their progeny.

And the brood are wonderful creatures. They are scary little apex predators at times. It makes me want to shed my carapace with worry whenever they “play” especially when it is practising their predatory pursuit skills (they call it “hide and seek”) but they are also curious and intelligent and they have pack-bonded with me as well!

I didn’t think it was possible, but Youngling-Michael and Youngling-Amanda have pack bonded with me even stronger than Human-Sally or Human-John have. They refer to me as “Aunty-Chixx.” This is a human kinsperson and the word means “sister to a parental unit.”

I am not of their brood. I am not even of their species. Yet these human have pack-bonded with me so strongly that they do not care of the barriors of blood, DNA, or planetary origin. They call me “family.”

Get out here amongst the stars and amongst the humans as soon as you are able my brood-sister, you shall not regret it!

The most notable land-based cephalopod native to Skaia is this little guy:

The Blinking Bees are domesticated hive-living arthropods and extremely useful companion/utility animals. As Ground Dogs are very attentive of their young, these magic tricks get passed down from parent to child, thus resulting in the only other species besides Carapaces known to be magically capable. At least, until Humanity was discovered.

While the Ram-garoo and the Carapacian don’t seem to have much in common, that’s simply because it’s related taxonomically rather than physically. It is a member of the family Testacorpus Macropoda, it is hermaphroditic like a carapace, has an outer shell like a carapace (that molts off in adulthood, unlike a carapace), nurse their young in a pouch like a carapace, and has prehensile hands like a carapace. All of the other, more similar-to-a-carapace species died off over time, like the Neanderthals compared to Homo sapiens. Think of how different a human is from a gorilla and you’ll see what I mean.

Correction and Aggression

I had to correct something left out of my last reply to the culling PSA.

I could have sworn that I’d specified GENETIC aggression to be grounds for euthanization in mammals. And I got unnecessarily defensive at the person who pointed out that I hadn’t.

I read back over the post just now, realized that they were right, and made the appropriate changes.

But so that you don’t have to slog through that post, we’ll discuss types of aggression here.

Most aggression in mammals is hormonal or fearful, neither of which are grounds to euthanize, as these are healthy animals.

Territorial aggression is a thing, but it varies drastically between different species, so I’ll restrict my discussion to aggression directed specifically at the human handler in this post.

Hormonal aggression is grounds to cull, as it should not be passed on, but there is no need to kill it. Sterilization fixes both problems by drastically decreasing the hormonal trigger and preventing that individual from siring or bearing young. It can be a happy pet with no danger to its owner.

There is NO excuse for a breeder killing a fearful animal, especially since socialization is OUR responsibility!

Corrective training of both pet and human handler will remedy the issue. Any handler experienced with their species of choice should know its warning expressions well enough to find out exactly what they did to scare it and either stop doing that or (in the event that the scarey thing is a necessity) begin acclimation training.

If neither sterilization nor corrective training result in any progress on an aggressive mammal, then you are most likely dealing with Genetic Aggression, which is a physical disease of the brain.

An animal genuinely suffering from Genetic Aggression has a deformed brain, and it is legitimate grounds for Euthanasia.

German Shepard/Chow-Chow mixes tend to suffer genetic aggression caused by their brains continuing to grow after the skull has stopped, for example.

The condition is painful and drives the dog to lash out.

Spaying or neutering won’t return that brain to the correct shape and size. The animal lashes out because it’s in pain and mental function is damaged. It is dangerous and unkind to drag that kind of suffering out.

To my knowledge, the physical disease of the brain that is Genetic Aggression only afflicts mammals.

Severe Aggression in birds and non-mamalian vertibrates is exclusively hormonal or fearful.

Hormonal aggression will pass on its own, and is why parrot cages are set up so that minimal physical contact can be made duting maintainence if necessary.

Fearful aggression is triggered by as specific event or behavior and can be trained out by a patient handler that knows what they’re doing.

A breeder should be well enough versed in their species’ behaviors to differentiate between those three types of aggression and handle them accordingly.

If a breeder claims to have euthanized an animal suffering Genetic Aggression, they should also have sterilized or separated the parents.

If they are still breeding from that pair, either the disease is going to crop right back up, or they are BSing you and just didn’t want to sterilize or bother with training.

Aggression is a catch-all term, but there are four distinct causes that breeders and keepers should all be aware of.

Only Genetic Aggression is grounds for culling by Euthanasia.
