Lack of nutrition is taking a toll on the villagers’ health. Bharati Mahato from Manguria village in Purulia said her husband died on April 7, 2023 after prolonged weakness. “My husband was under a lot of stress and was suffering from depression after MGNREGA work stopped. He was the only earning member of the family of six people. We could not even afford to take him to a doctor to get treatment or get him better food so he would stay strong,” Mahato said. His condition kept deteriorating and resulted in his death, she said. “How will my family survive without its sole breadwinner?” Mahato asked.

Poverty in India
India is a developing nation that works hard to improve its economic conditions. Even though poverty remains a significant problem in our country, particularly in rural areas where individuals struggle to access healthcare and fulfill their own ambitions. They lack access to a good standard of living, which causes them to experience troubles.
Although during the planning periods, India's national income and per capita income improved, social welfare increased, literacy levels rose, and people were able to meet more and more of their needs, poverty (and particularly rural poverty) is still there in its terrifying form. According to the latest research, 4.2% of India's population—or 16.4% of the country's total population—lives in extreme poverty, with a deprivation score of more than 50%. In this blog post, we will cover the major challenges that Indian people face due to poverty.
An introduction to poverty
Poverty is a state or circumstance in which an individual or a group of people do not have enough money or the necessities of life. In other words, it refers to the need for more sufficient financial resources, which prevents people, households, and entire communities from having the means to survive or obtain the essentials for a happy life. This entails people being so destitute that finding adequate food, clothing, shelter, and medical care is difficult.
People in India face major poverty challenges.
Poverty implies more than a lack of income and productive resources to provide a sustainable livelihood. Poverty indeed prevents people from having access to enough food, appropriate clothing, medical care, and a clean environment. Here are some examples of its manifestations:
1. Lack of education
The lack of education is one of the main issues associated with poverty. Due to low income or no income, many families struggle to give their children a quality education, which creates difficulties and obstacles in later life.
Although it is a vicious circle, lack of education causes poverty and low-paying occupations, which make it difficult for people to support their children's education. As a result, youngsters are unable to escape the cycle of poverty.
2. Social discrimination
As poor people have less access to good food and sufficient medical treatment, they face societal discrimination.
Even though it is less well known, discrimination based on poverty prevents some people from getting the health care, education, housing, or employment they need.
In actuality, stigmatization, discrimination, and stereotypes frequently spiral out of control as a result of how poorly society and institutions treat those who are poor.
3. Unemployment
One of the most serious repercussions of poverty is unemployment. Those who lack access to healthcare, education, or even food are unable to apply for jobs. They lack the qualifications to obtain any position that offers stability and good pay.
They are trapped in poverty since they are unable to cover their fundamental necessities due to the unpredictability of their income.

4. Malnutrition
Poverty increases the risks of malnutrition and its consequences. Several types of malnutrition are more likely to harm the poor.
However, a cycle of poverty and ill health may also be perpetuated by malnutrition, which also raises healthcare expenses, lowers productivity, and hinders economic growth.
5. Multidimensionality
A poor person may have numerous drawbacks, such as poor health or hunger, a lack of clean water or power, low employment quality, or inadequate education.
Income alone cannot be used to determine poverty levels. According to the National MPI, there are numerous deprivation-related variables in it.
The MPI is based on three factors: standard of living, health, and education. Each factor weighs in at one-third of the MPI.
6. Vulnerability
The options are accessible to various communities for locating an alternative way of life in terms of assets, education, health, and employment possibilities determine their vulnerability to poverty.
The analysis also takes into account the higher risks that these groups encounter during natural disasters (earthquakes, tsunamis), terrorism, etc. Their capacity to manage these risks on a social and economic level is an additional problem.
7. Inflation
Poverty is made worse by inflation, which also causes a rise in the cost of basic goods. Thus, inflation is seen as the "cruelest tax" on the impoverished.
The ongoing and rapid rise in prices is making the poor poorer. Few people in society have benefited from it, and those in lower-income groups find it challenging to meet their basic needs.
8. Community exclusion
This idea holds that poverty must not be seen as the inability of the poor to enjoy social equality with better-off people in better surroundings, instead must be recognized as a condition in which the impoverished must live exclusively in a poor environment with other poor people.
For instance, the functioning of India's caste system, in which members of particular castes are denied access to opportunities.

The last line
It is acknowledged that poverty is still a significant problem in India. As education is the most effective tool for ending poverty, we should all start working towards it in order to end this poverty. We can develop more as we gain knowledge. Thus, whatever anyone knows, strive to share it with others so they can learn something new from you.
It's an appeal to educated and accomplished individuals to set aside some time to visit orphanages, NGOs, and other rural areas to spend quality time with underprivileged youngsters. Nonetheless, it is everyone's responsibility to assist India in escaping the grip of poverty because doing so will benefit all citizens as well as the country as a whole.

"wow haha this man is 5'6 look at how short he is" meri behen he's Indian
#it's so weird for me to hear people say that 5'6 or 5'7 is like dwarf height for men because like...it gets shorter. like way shorter#and I know things like malnutrition and stuff also affect that too so people in countries like the US (as I am) are probably going to be...#...taller than people back in india but like my brother is 12 and he's 144 cm roughly and he's raised here. so many indian people i know...#...in the us are around that 5'7 or 5'8 mark#plus a lot of bollywood and tollywood actors (idk about other industries) are around 5'7 or so maybe even 5'5#aamir khan is one of the biggest bollywood stars of the past 2/3 decades and he is 5'5. srk is 5'6 i think#oh! and plus a lot of women beyond 5'7 are considered tall. my dad called Deepika Padukone tall i thought she was like 5'10 or something...#... she's 5'8. and that's part of the point i'm making#i didn't make this post to complaining about height-shaming or whatever i just think y'all's perception of what's short is skewed#I am taller than a good chunk of my family members (including my 5'4 mom) and I'm only 5'6 (165 cm). but I'm still considered tall

Study: Protecting the ocean helps fight malnutrition
"Protecting more of the ocean could slash the risk of malnutrition for up to 3 million people worldwide, according to a new study co-authored by Conservation International.
It found that fish catches in coral reefs could increase by up to 20 percent by expanding sustainable-use marine protected areas — that is, areas where some fishing is allowed with restrictions.
The benefits of marine protected areas in helping restore fish populations and ecosystems are well documented. However, perceptions persist that these protections come at the expense of local communities.
The new study challenges this view.
“It’s easy to think of protected areas as putting people and nature in conflict by restricting access to much-needed sources of nutrition for locals,” said Conservation International scientist Alex Zvoleff, a study co-author. “But what this study shows is that protecting nature isn't about walling off resources from people; protected areas can actually enhance what nature provides for people."
The study analyzed fish counts in nearly 2,500 coral reefs across 53 countries, focusing on the nutrients found in fish that are critical for human health. Researchers looked at sites with a range of protections — from complete bans on fishing to open access for fishing — and found that sustainable-use marine protected areas have on average 15 percent more fish biomass than non-protected areas.
The study pinpointed countries with the greatest potential to improve malnutrition through sustainable-use marine protected areas, including Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique and Nicaragua.
More than 800 million people face malnutrition worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. In many coastal communities, fish can be the only source of vital nutrients — particularly for children and pregnant women.
However, pollution, overfishing and climate change are severely degrading the coral reefs that support these fish. And though coastal communities make up a small portion of those struggling with malnutrition, the study shows that fighting food insecurity can go hand in hand with protecting nature, said Daniel Viana, the study’s lead author.
“There is often a push for marine protected areas to completely ban fishing — our goal is to show that it does not need to be all or nothing,” Viana said. “Allowing regulated fishing in marine protected areas can support healthy fish populations, while also having a positive impact on the quality of life of surrounding communities.”
The study’s findings are particularly significant as global efforts are under way to protect at least 30 percent of the planet’s land and marine ecosystems by 2030. Currently, only about 8 percent of the ocean is protected."

For the third year in a row, global hunger is stuck at catastrophically high levels. Progress on the global hunger crisis has stagnated following a sharp deterioration between 2019 and 2021. 733 million people continue to face hunger today. This is 36% higher than a decade ago. 2.33 billion people – nearly 30% of the world – continue to be moderately or severely food insecure. While about 2.8 billion – one third of people in the world – are unable to access a healthy nutritious diet. The world is far off track to achieve the zero hunger goal or any of the seven global nutrition targets by 2030 – without major changes to food systems. This is not a blip, and can no longer just be blamed on the pandemic. This is an ever-clearer signal that the global industrial food system is failing, and is disastrously vulnerable to increasing climate, hunger, conflict and financial shocks. We need a food system transformation to tackle the new normal of hunger. Climate change was the most prevalent driver of food insecurity and malnutrition in 2023. The major drivers of hunger – conflict, climate change and economic shocks – are occurring more often and at higher intensity, resulting in increasing numbers of hungry and food-insecure people. Already this year we’ve seen climate shocks devastate staple food production in Brazil, Mexico, China and India, with studies linking higher temperatures with increased food prices. Building climate resilient food systems is literally a matter of life and death — and must be an urgent priority globally. This means more diversified and localized production and food chains, instead of global industrial food chains.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is a major influencer and funder of agricultural development in Africa, with little accountability or transparency. Leading experts in food security and many groups in Africa and around the world have critiqued the foundation’s push to expand high-cost, high-input, chemical-dependent agriculture in Africa. Critics say this approach is exacerbating hunger, worsening inequality and entrenching corporate power in the world’s hungriest region.
This fact sheet links to reports and news articles documenting these concerns.
[...]
What are the main critiques of Gates Foundation’s agricultural program?
The Gates Foundation’s flagship agricultural program, the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA, which recently rebranded to remove the term “green revolution” from its name), works to transition farmers away from traditional seeds and crops to patented seeds, fossil-fuel based fertilizers and other inputs to grow commodity crops for the global market. The foundation says its goal is to “boost the yields and incomes of millions of small farmers in Africa… so they can lift themselves and their families out of hunger and poverty.” The strategy is modeled on the Indian “green revolution” that boosted production of staple crops but also left a legacy of structural inequity and escalating debt for farmers that contributed to massive mobilizations of peasant farmers in India.
Critics have said the green revolution is a failed approach for poverty reduction that has created more problems than it has solved; these include environmental degradation, growing pesticide use, reduced diversity of food crops, and increased corporate control over food systems. Several recent research reports provide evidence that Gates-led agricultural interventions in Africa have failed to help small farmers. Critics say the programs may even be worsening hunger and malnutrition in Southern Africa.

Indirect taxes in the country however, have gone up. They may seem small and incremental, but are paid by every citizen whatever their income status. A daily wager and a millionaire pay the same tax when they buy a pack of butter – nearly 12 percent. “Rising fuel prices and indirect taxes have pushed up prices of essential commodities, including food, Bhardwaj added. “This has resulted in acute food insecurity and malnutrition, especially among children and women. Since the government started amassing indirect taxes, their spending in the social sector has gone down.” Mishra said. “This is mostly because the collection of indirect taxes just cancels the loss of corporate taxes.”

OKAY!!!!
Goldenpunk (aka Hobie x Pavitr) HCs cause I can
Hobie is a SKINNY MF (slightly from malnutrition) he’s also very light and is 6 foot something
Pavitr is pretty toned for a 16 year old and is avarage height
Hobie is a Transmasculine Enby (he/they/it he/him pref)
Pavitr is a Nonbinary Demiboy (he/him)
Pavitr when sleeping takes up a LOT of space and Hobie takes up very little so they’re perfect
THEY ARE TFT (both nonbinary)
Pavitr is Bi while Hobie is Gay
Hobie wasn’t able to afford top surgery so he got it done for free in a sketchy back alley and also cause fuck capitalism
Hobie is AFAB and has been on testosterone for 2 years (which once again he gets in a sketchy ass alley once again also cause fuck capitalism)
Pavitr is AFAB nuff said
I was informed that GRLwood is cancelled for completely fair reasons (one of the members is a sexual abuser) so i simply removed this HC
Hobie is fairly strong for such a skinny guy
Hobie doesn’t like his mom a lot
Pavitr misses his mom and thinks she would think he is a disappointment
They’re inlove
Hobie has a soft spot for stray animals of any kind so do with that HC what you will
The first time they met Hobie tried to murder Pavitr out of instinct and instinct alone
Pavitr sometimes helps Hobie with his hair but he really loves running his fingers through hobies hair same with hobie
Hobie HATES cold weather
Pavitr will complain if it’s a little too hot
Sometimes Hobie will just crash through Pavitrs window and Pavitrs basically numb to it at this point
Mentioned in the previous post but Hobie wears lipstick and is heavily affectionate so….it didn’t take a lot of people long to figure out they were going steady
Hobie constantly uses the term Necking instead of Make out cause Miguel hates it and he loves to make Miguel mad
I call the ship Chai Tea sometimes ( Chai = pavitr Tea = Hobie) just cause it feels right in my bones
Pavitrs aunt maya loves Hobie just she’s a little suspicious about the fact he’s British, not to mention she makes a FUCK ton of jokes about Hobie stealing pavitr like the british stole India's history which slay girlboss
Pavitr makes a lot of jokes about Hobie being British too
Hobie wrote an entire song about wanting to kiss Pavitr and it took Pavitr two years to figure out
Miguel hates their constant PDA so Hobie calls him Homophobic (and also a nonce)
Jess thinks that it’s sweet that they’re so affectionate with each other
Miguel will piss off Hobie and hobies like “aight OI PAVITR LETS GO NECK IN MIGUELS OFFICE”
Pavitr likes Hobies accent a lot
Same with Hobie
Hobies 17 and Pavitr is 16 but Hobie is older by 3 months
Hobie is easily flustered he just is good at hiding it
slightly angsty one but Hobie (when they were first developing crushes on each other) was terrified that pavitr would either get killed because of him or pavitr would turn out to be homophobic, this caused him to have a breakdown in the middle of a fight
Hobie and Sunspider are best friends cause WLW and NWLNW solidarity
Sometimes Gwen and Hobie hang out in Pavitrs universe but Hobie hangs out there all the time
They like to have really meaningful conversations while beating up facists
Both of them hate facists
On Hobies back there is a tatto (which he shouldnt fuckin have but once again sketchy ass alley and fuck capitalism) that says Stay woke as a reference to something said in the black community years back to fight against police brutality
stole this one from @toshkakoshka and made some adjustments but Hobie and Pavtir have matching henna designs of each others spider symbol
aunt maya did it for them
hobie will NEVER admit but he is a HUGE snuggler (also he'll never admit hes a fan of weezer)
Hobie is the parent of the friend group.
THEY ARE Black lab and golden retriver
After quitting Hobies watch slowly stops working so he started collecting small pieces of tech that were given to him by gwen and other friends who think miguel should pull the stick outta his ass and just let miles join *cough cough* sunspider *cough cough* so hobie makes the first version of the watch that gwen was given near the end of the movie, this first version has a time limit so when ever Hobie wants to go hang out with pravitr, miles or gwen (usually pravitr) he has to stay vigilent so he doesn't fucking die
and because of this and being homeless he rarely gets sleep
Pavitr and Hobie are either roughhousing when ever theyre around each other or Being a lovey dovey couple cause the fucks refuse to separate
Pavitrs type in men is tall guys with piercings and who dress androgynous his type in girls is usually gals who are the same height as him who are smart, have short hair, and can rock both the fem and masc style
Pavitrs and his Gf spilt up because they both realized they were going complete separate ways in life (she never wanted to have kids and Pav wanted kids one day) so they spilt but they are very very good friends still and are slightly queer platonic (Hobie is completely comfortable with this)
once Hobie shaved his head and when i tell you pavitr had Bisexual panic i mean it
even if the relationship was only platonic Hobie would still be heavily affectionate to Pav since thats his way of showing people he cares about them
Pav can be VERY bitey at times this annoys everyone except Hobie
Hobie writes cheesy ass love songs then plays them for pav but he never finishes them
Pavitr needs reminders that Hobie still wants to pursue a romantic relationship with him (similar to me lmao) Hobie is completely fine with this and reminds Pav when ever he needs to
Pav is a ACCIDENTAL shirt thief he forgets to give them back (same lol)
Aunt maya loves the entire group (even though they make her life slightly harder) and calls them little nicknames in arabic
here are the nicknames (Sry for the butchering im using google translate) Miles = العنكبوت الصغير Hobie = بريطاني gwen = فتاة ذكية and finally Pav = حمار (pavs is a tad mean but hes okay with it)
Hobie only lets the friend group call him Spider-punk, with anyone else? ON SIGHT ASS BEATING
Hobie AND Pav have abandonment issues just in two different fonts
Hobies gender envy sums up to Demonic shit and beings
Pav (by other people) has been described to be as loyal as a dog which can bite him in the ass based on the people hes friends with
heres a Gwen x Miles HC for your troubles, Gwen did the kiss thing except She stuck Miles to the ceiling and took off his mask to kiss him
Sun spider started teasing Pav about his and Hobies relationship kinda being like romeo and juilette after Hobie quit, just for shits and giggles (Pav didnt mind at all)
Charlotte calls Hobie hobo or faggot and Hobie calls her Slag or Dyke (They are NMLNM and NWLNW solidarity)
so a common interaction between the two would go like "sup fag" "hey dyke" then the two laugh about it
Hobie and Gwen have set a building on fire together like besties do
Miles asked Hobie if he liked Gwen and Hobie laughed and just said "Im gay bruv"
Gwen and Hobie (at first) COULD NOT handle eating in Pavs universe
Pavitr (when kissing) bites for some fucking reason he doesnt even understand the reason he has the impulse to bite his romantic partners
Sometimes Hobie just screams for no reason other than "fuck you miguel"
Hobie thinks we should get rid of the pride parades and just have riots (he has a bit of a point)
sometimes hobie will just carry people like they're wet cats (its mainly charlotte)
Charlotte and Pavitr had a Greece moment in which was of course ruined by Miguel
Basically SunSpider wanted all the deets about Pavitr and Hobie
Hobie calls Pavitr Pavi and Pavitr calls Hobie Hobs (sometimes)
#chaipunk#hobie x pavitr#silly goofy HCs#hobie brown#pavitr prabhakar#pavitr is so gender#spider man: across the spider verse#WHY ARE THEY BOTH SUCH GENDER ENVY WTF???????#sun spider#charlotte webber#across the spiderverse#atsv#gwen stacy#i lowkey want an au where its just miles gwen pavitr and hobie being teens and just being happy#they are so bfs#i hope miguel gets yelled at by his wife for being a little shit#Charlotte lowkey fine#miles morales#I envy Pav for being so bbg#goldenpunk#punkchai#spider punk

Eve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution (Cat Bohannon, 2023)
"In many Indian states, it’s normal for young women and new brides to eat last.
In Maharashtra, for example, the cultural rule is that guests eat first, followed by the oldest men, then the younger men, then the older women, then the children.
In traditional families, a younger woman eats only once everyone else has been fed. That rule doesn’t change if she’s pregnant.
More than 90 percent of adolescent Indian girls are anemic. More than 2 percent of all Indian mothers are underweight.
And that’s not just down to poverty; only about 16.5 percent of sub-Saharan mothers are underweight.
Even worse, the average woman in India weighs less in her third trimester than most sub-Saharan African women do when they first become pregnant.
Malnutrition is deadly and dangerous all the time, but especially when you’re pregnant.
If the mother and child both manage to survive, the newborn usually arrives too soon, too tiny, and too fragile.
Many die within weeks of being born. Those who don’t usually face severe health problems throughout their lives, including problems with cognitive development.
It’s true that pregnant women in India’s rural areas are more vulnerable to these problems. But rural Indians make up 68 percent of the country’s population.
The majority of the world’s second most populous nation live in areas where there often isn’t enough food and, as a rule, pregnant women eat last.
Sexism, in other words, is starving India from the inside out.
At the same time, the country is investing a lot of its resources in a bid to become one of the biggest technology centers of the world.
You need a lot of good brains to be a tech giant. Well-fed brains. To build them, you’re going to need pregnant women to jump the line at dinner."
