what's your general interpretation of yume nikki?
I think a lot of Yume Nikki is intentionally left up to interpretation, with a lot of its character and world designs being akin to stuff the creator just thought was neat or interesting to look at. I think if there is a clear theme throughout the game, it's isolation/lonliness.
It's pretty clear from the beginning that Madotsuki refuses to leave her room. When you interact with the door, it's not like you hear a locked door sound or anything, she just shakes her head "no". It's also one of the only things in the game she physically responds to.
Also her name Madotsuki, which to my knowledge isn't a normal Japanese name, translates roughly to "window" or "windowed". I'm not 100% sure if that's accurate but it kind of brings to mind the idea of always being on the outside looking in. That one famous part where you watch a party from the bushes kind of highlights this.
Tumblr media
In the dream world, every NPC either ignores you or runs away from you. One of my favorite examples of this is in the mall. It's one of the only areas in the game with a large population of "normal" humans at once, and when you try to interact with them, they become distorted and start avoiding you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've seen people speculate that Madotsuki has some dark shit from her past involving potentially knifing someone (hence the knife effect and the other gorey imagery) but I don't really buy that. The """official""" Yume Nikki manga hints at Madotsuki potentially murdering someone but it's just a bit too cheesy for me to believe.
To me it's more interesting to think it represents her fear of resorting to some sort of violence due to her loneliness/isolation. Or she just likes gruesome/macabre things.
Back on the topic of isolation/loneliness, I think the most interesting aspect of this is her interaction with certain NPCs. Madotsuki is (presumably) a young girl, so she would probably relate the most to other girls. But every interaction with the "normal" girls in her dreams is bizarre.
Tumblr media
Let's take the Toriningen for example. They're the closest things to "enemies" in the game, given that they take you to small prison-like areas when they catch you. They're clearly designed to resemble human girls except for their bird-like faces. I really like the theory that they represent popular girls, or other peers of Madotsuki that she's intimidated by (hence their height, they're possibly older than her or its symbolic.) They could even be bullies, sometimes hostile towards her or sometimes not.
Tumblr media
There's Kamakurako in the igloo, who just ignores Madotsuki completely.
Tumblr media
Mafurako (who appears as a normal looking girl if you use the stoplight) will teleport you away if you try to interact with her. Possibly her shunning Madotsuki or Madotsuki keeping her distance.
Tumblr media
Monoe is an interesting example because she's the only character that calls attention to herself by displaying a full-sized portrait when you try to interact with her. I find this really interesting why this character is given so much attention, and similar Mafurako she teleports herself away. Another example of Madotsuki not being able to interact with another girl.
Tumblr media
Not sure what's going on with Monoko. Similar to Monoe, she draws attention to herself by having a full-screen event. Maybe Madotsuki can't relate to her, or is disgusted by her for some reason.
Tumblr media
Poniko is definitely the most interesting example of this recurring theme of Madotsuki's weird interactions with her peers. Like other characters, she ignores you completely. Her bedroom is also possibly the most normal looking area in the game, implying that it's someplace Madotsuki has been many times. Maybe a childhood friend?
Tumblr media
One aspect of the Uboa event I don't see people talk about a lot is how her bedroom changes when the event is triggered. The sudden visual motif of eyes (and googly eyes) is very reminiscent of other areas of Madotsuki's dream. I like to imagine this is Madotsuki's mind "infecting" the memory of this room, and in turn changing her perspective of her old friend(?) into this strange monster. I'm not sure what exactly Uboa is supposed to represent, but I think it's more about Madotsuki's memories with Poniko being tampered by her own fears or insecurities.
There's a lot more you could unpack in Yume Nikki, such as the possible themes of sexual abuse, traffic accidents, violence, gender identity... but this is my personal guess as what the "true" meaning of the game is.
I still think Kikiyama didn't ever have a specific story in mind for the game and it is more of an interpretive art piece, but this is my personal guess to what Yume Nikki is about.
Even I think this analysis is pretty surface level, so that's why I enjoy the different theories regarding this game. The ones about gender identity is really interesting to me.

does anybody else have this ability?
when i graduated highschool i magically was granted the ability to revisit imaginary places in my dreams like yume nikki style. i can name like 3 locations off the top of my head that i’ve visited in my dreams 2+ times.
unnamed strip mall- i’ve been here 3 times now. it has like 3 stores to it but i always only go in one of them regularly which sells fun party favors and stationary. another is a bounce house type place.
wooden store- ive been here about twice. behind the strip mall is a store that’s made of wood. there’s miscellaneous items i never pay attention to but i once spotted a fawful figure and magnet set there.
department clothing store- i’ve been here twice. it’s got a stuffy, air conditioned atmosphere, like a mall that’s open late at night. it sells racks of early 2010′s, neon clothing that a scene kid would wear. it’s completely silent. i always look though everything to see if i can find anything cool, in which i have not found anything yet.

❓ + does the hammy enjoy horror games and if so, name some favorites?
QUESTIONS FOR THE MUN (Accepting).
Tumblr media
HAMMY'S POSTING. I don't play them THAT much myself, funny enough. One would think I do, considering the character I write, but far from it. I just don't like being on edge, or jumpscares, but I will watch my friends play those games no problem. I do have some favorites, however!
If we talk about mainstream horror, I had a phase during the early-to-mid-2010s where I was really into the bestiary of the Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Left 4 Dead games. I never got to play those games myself, I did not have the consoles or a computer that could run them, but I loved learning about the different enemies and what they were like, how they worked and, in the case of SH, what they symbolized. So I'd just watch walkthroughs instead. I really liked Silent Hill 3 back in the day. It's probably the darkest title in the series, some of Akira Yamaoka's best work (nothing will ever beat You're Not Here for me, nothing), and that intro sequence where Heather wakes up at the mall is, simply, iconic.
(Shoutout to Silent Hill 2 in terms of music and Silent Hill 4 because I really like its enemy design and I just have a soft spot for the black sheep of the series. The Twin Victim is still one of the craziest and saddest enemy designs out there, that think made an impression on me when I was 13-14.)
What games did I actually play in my potato PC back then? All the cult classic RPGMaker horror games. I remember finishing Ib, Mad Father, The Witch's House, Yume Nikki, you name it, I likely played it. But Dreaming Mary would likely be my favorite from that particular niche. Not as popular as other dream exploration or RPGmaker horror games, but I love Mary's design, I love her little pink dream world full of cutesy animal characters, and the music is a treat. Also being able to have Mary escape her IRL nightmare is nice, because at least she gets a happy ending unlike Madotsuki or Viola, for example.
I also really like Yume 2kki but it does not constitute as RPGMaker horror really? It's its own beast, a dream exploration experience like no other, and this video does an amazing job at explaining it. Also I love the OST, and chances are you have heard it too without realizing it!
Last, but not least, Fran Bow is another indie horror game I really liked back then. It was even one of the first games I bought on Steam with my own money because I saw someone play the first chapter and I wanted to experience the rest by myself. Now, that one is complete visual horror, gory and grotesque as it gets, not for people with a weak stomach. But it is all shown from the perspective of a little girl who is made to take a medicine that makes her view the world like a very surreal hellscape, which is what I find most interesting. It was one of my first point-and-click experiences ever and it was what got me into the genre. It's just very creative how the real world and the gory "other world" are used interchangeably for puzzles and to obtain items and the like.
Ohhhh, and, as a very obscure extra, Lone Survivor and its OST are never going to leave me, especially Survivor. A pixel survival horror developed by a single guy where the objective is surviving your daily life in a post-apocalyptic, monster-ridden town as you look for means to escape it for good. The main character is always hallucinating and it is very difficult to tell what are his memories and what is the horrible reality he lives in, but if you can reach the end I think it's very worth going through all of that.

Yume Nikki but it's a trailer for a Hollywood live-action adaptation
[Shot of a door. Someone is knocking from the other side.] MADO: Hello? Is anyone there? I'm gonna open the door, okay?
[The door is open, and we see a girl in a pink vest, with pigtails. She seems surprised by us.] MADO: Whoa. Oh. My. God…
[Reverse, sweeping shot reveals the Nexus. Some faint ""nondescriptly-tribal-sounding"" drums can be heard. A faint, poignant, echoing note is played, and the screen cuts to black. It's the first note to the flute theme.]
IN A WORLD… [Shot of the Neon World NPCs making funny faces]
…WHERE YOUR MIND IS KING… [Shot of Madotsuki looking confused in the Wilderness, with a weirdly broad angle, making her face look strange up close] MADO: I don't know why I started dreaming.
YOUR WILDEST DREAMS… [Scene in Forest World where one of the NPCS starts drooling all over her] MADO: But one thing is for sure… I'm never leaving home!
…CAN BECOME NIGHTMARES [Flute theme ends with another echoing note, and a thud.]
[Cut to the Mall. Mado turns towards the Toriningen cashier.] TORI: annoying squawk that takes a bit too long for comfort Hi little girl! I'm Tori, but you can call me Tori. Do you need drinks, eggs, bicycles, eggs, scrambled eggs, a ticket to hell…? Why do we even have those? MADO: Um, actually, I just want to know why I'm here. TORI: Oh, of course, me too, girl! Especially with these [beep] [beep] managers! Y'ALL DON'T PAY ME SINCE LAST SUMMER, YA BUNCH OF DINGDONGS!
[Basic electronic remix of the Toriningen Party, with 8-bit-ish soundfont. A Minion is running from the Dark World Ghost] ILLUMINATION STUDIOS PRESENTS
[Mado explores the FC Caverns with a lantern, and a cheap pixelated effect on top] PONIKO: I don't think you quite understand how anything works here.
BASED ON THE CULT CLASSIC BY KIKIYAMA [Mado going up the stairs to the Garden. The lighting seems weirdly off] PONIKO: And I can excuse that…
TAYLOR SWIFT as PONYTAIL GIRL [POV shot of Poniko checking Madotsuki out inside her house] PONIKO: But what are thooose!? The knee socks. They're, like, so passayyyyy! MADO: What's that even mean?
JOSH GAD as UBOA [Shot of Uboa and Mado trying to walk through the white sludge next to Akumu] UBOA: Well, you can look at the bright side! At least we're not inside THAT guy! MADO: Wait, what? [Akumu roars and goes after them, vomiting green instead of red. They both scream]
[Record scratch, someone clearing their throat]
JACK BLACK as MASADA [Masada is doing piano improv in a white spaceship with LED mood lighting that looks like a gamer bedroom, while Mado just stares blankly] MASADA: Space… you're so cool… and- oh, never mind, someone already did that one. Darn it! MADO: Um, okay.
and JENNA ORTEGA as MADOTSUKI [Poignant cinematic rendition of the saving theme] [Sweeping match shots of Mado biking through several worlds] MADO: I'm not scared! You're scared!
[Shot of Mado handling the knife like it was a nuclear weapon, and breathing heavily] MADO: Plus…
[Shot of Big Red waking up inside the Sewers. He looks like Prismo from Adventure Time but with human teeth, and he's drooling on himself] MADO: Maybe I could get used to this.
[Music abruptly stops before the last note] [Mado approaches the Rave Box. The Aztec Rave Monkey, eyes bulging in different directions, pops out of it and screams at her until she falls on the floor.] MADO: Alright, I guess this is my life now.
[Last note plays triumphantly.] YUME NIKKI (MY DREAM DIARY): THE MOVIE
[Kyuu-kyuu-kun is rubbing the pole. Mado approaches him.] MADO: So what, are you like "stimming" or something? [Kyuu stretches himself over her with a derpy grin.] MADO: Okay, okay, I was just saying!
[Last note plays again, with a resounding thud] COMING TO DREAM THEATERS NEAR YOU JUNE 26, 2025 RATED PG

Your art is amazing! What do you like about Yume Nikki or the fangames?
Thank you! This may be a long answer if you don't mind, I'll ramble a bit.
Yume Nikki being one of the firsts rpg maker I played probably played in its favor but I clearly remember some kind of sensation in my brain while I was in the teleport maze which made me think "I enjoy this, it's relaxing". I think that Yume Nikki being an exploration game without demanding too much reflex to play it made it a great game when you just want to clear your mind.
I liked to wander through completely unknown places with alien/odd design, entities that are completely silent and none that are quite humans (->really liked how the people in the mall or the Sky Garden are normal in silhouette but lacks facial features or nomal skintones) trying every effect on every NPC you could find it was really nice. It was a nice liberty to be able to do that. Just going with the flow, discovering things on accident. To get to the red king/the nightmare without any prior explanation was really something.
And the visuals! It's nothing extraordinary in a technical aspect but I wasn't used to see so much different artstyles in a game, especially pre-colombian inspired art. I liked this mix of real elements, drawn art and pixel art. It's chaotic in a way and still it looks fine since we're in dreamlands and not everything is always logical in your dreams.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even this little alligator/bird thing when you have one of the rare dialogue boxes has so much charm
Tumblr media
Add the soundtrack of the game that feels really calm and I don't know, it was really mesmerising.
Also I like to see others' interpretation of what's happening, how do people interprets the design when they draw - even the fanfiction.
Also here's my favorite Yume Nikki- related video. Even if you can tell by the artstyle it's aged the beginning is still so fucking cool
youtube
For the fangames well it was the natural order of things lol. I finished Yume Nikki, I stared blankly at the wall, typed the name of the game on google, [???] and jackpot.
What is nice with fangames is that you'll get the same gameplay -which is simple but do its job well - and people will have to build a new story, with their own artistic style and preferences. It is not different that when looking at people's artblog, except that you'll have to look for new paintings.
FanGames like Yume 2kki or Collective Unconscious are much less about story, that it has with exploration (If what you wish to see is has many differents worlds as possible). Yume 2kki particularly has so much differents maps that every new exploration is a trip on its own. I really like to not play it for a few months and then come back to see which warps changed, what's new. Some maps feel like their creator are trying to push the limits of the rmk which is really impressive.
For .flow (since I've been drawing a lot), it's because my brain's acting silly. It clicked back a little more than a year ago now and I felt so sorry for Sabitsuki even though there's no clear directive. I'm just putting puzzle pieces together on this one, but I love to go in headcanon territory even though sometimes it seems frowned down by people? (not talking about the YN fans, but more in a general way, like -"you just made that up 😭"- Yes. I know. That's the point.) Also helps that I like body horror and the thin line between what's organic/mechanical
So I'm not sure if you were asking this because you're yourself a YN fan or because you're wondering if you should play it, but if you haven't done so, go for it, don't look at walkthrough. Games are more fun when you have no idea what you're doing!
And since this game has been on my mind for at least a decade now seeing Madotsuki is like seing a daughter/friend. Seeing people still draw her feels nice/heartwarming. For a game that borders a lot on (self-)isolation, it's good to see that she's loved.
Tumblr media
tl;dr Game with an unique atmosphere and which leaves a lot of place for you mind to get lost in.

I’ve been struggling a while with labelling myself and defining who I am and I think it’s because I’m trying so hard to fit into one group.
I’m gyaru but at the same time I’m cottage core but I’m also a trashy mall goth but I’m also vampire goth but I’m also bohemian and hippie but I’m also a therian but I’m also a dungeon master but I’m also an ao3 writer but I’m also an anime lover but I’m also cute core but I’m also cute gore but I’m also goblin core but I’m also dark academia.
I’m a Hannibal fan but I also love Sanrio but I’m also a wannabe tattoo artist but I’m also a wannabe taxidermist and I collect bones and feathers and I’m also a pagan but I’m also an oldschool hip hop and rap fan but I’m also an indie fan but I’m also a hyper pop fan but I’m also a heavy metal fan but I’m also a classical music fan.
I love big musicals like Hamilton and be more chill and I love mean girls and broadway in general. But I also love small musicals like Seeds and Hannibal the musical and Adamandi.
I love Hello Charlotte and Ib and Mad father and Misao and Yandere simulator and Pom Gets WiFi and the witch’s house and Yume Nikki and Ao Oni and pizza tower and Faith the unholy trinity and papers please and Please, don’t touch anything and this is not a game and at dead of night and resident evil and we happy few and Doki Doki literature club and slay the princess and west of loathing and little nightmares and riddle school and fire watch.
I love cooking and I love animals and I love sunsets and my friends and my boyfriend. I love having a cluttered room but I’m always moving it around and changing things. I love photography and I love holding onto memories. I love Fnaf and I love Undertale. I love anime like my neighbour totoro and little witch academia but I also love corpse party and higurashi when they cry. I love making my own characters and drawing them again and again. I love horror movies but I also love comedy shows. I love warrior cats and I love roleplaying. I love reading to others and talking for hours about the things I enjoy. I love commentary YouTubers and I love documentaries. I like crime shows and I love analysing music videos.
I love I love I love!!
And that’s all that matters. I don’t need to fit into a group because I just am.
I am a being made up of everything I have ever witnessed and interacted with.
I take the quirks and habits of the people I have met and they become part of me. I adopt new superstitions from characters in tv shows so I can admit that yes — I am easily influenced.
I don’t need to fit into a group because I am simply me.

Epic Yume Nikki - Dream Diary - Review
Five years ago a reboot of the cult classique video game Yume Nikki was released into the world at the tender age of zero. I have recently completed the game in its entirety, and today....... I share my thoughts.
I remember shatting myself when this game got announced on Steam. I got it on release day! However.... my laptop back then was not strong enough to run it - like I couldn't even move Madotsuki at all and my laptop was torching up. So, super duper sadly, I had to refund it......
And then.... I felt even more disappointed when the initial reviews came rolling in for the game on Steam and they were "Mixed" - and if you are familiar with Steam game reviews, if a game manages to have a mixed reception, it's p much synonymous to shit. I was shocked bro. So since then I was under the impression it was a failed reboot that didn't get the same feel as the original game, or just too new to be seen as Yume Nikki.
Fast forward to recently, when I figured I'd pick the game up again (and now able to play it since I've gotten a new laptop within the past 5 years) and.... I SERIOUSLY wish I didn't listen to those reviews, because now I get that they were probably the crowd that gets too repulsed by reboots/remakes that are too different from the original (Pokemon fans know what Im talking about). Like cmon guys it was made under the supervision of the dude who made the original Yume Nikki themselves
Anyways. HOLY shmoley. I'm serious. This game was SO GOOD!! The art... it was just BEAUTIFUL! In the reboot, you actually get to see Madotsuki's diary (which is full of sketches and concept art as you progress thru the game) and I went ahead and collected ALL the drawings because I love them so much.
I do remember being a little sad that there were less doors (I think?) compared to the original. Number World in the og was my favorite place because somehow seeing a really really long number on the floor was somewhat unsettling. Sadly it wasn't there, but the way the worlds were intertwined and different areas were referenced were SO genius.
Shout out to le new creature made by the original creator, thanks for throwing up blood everywhere when I played hot cross buns on my recorder I mean flute
Tumblr media
Ok so I figured out his name is Wrapi :]
Likewise with the worlds, there were only a few effects present in the game instead of 20+. Although I do like the Eye with Hand effect being remade into a Hamsa ^___^ I don't usually see that amulet in media which is awesomesauce. And it's fitting.
HONORABLE MENTIONS: Fisherman, cup boy at the mall filled with blood or juice who tripped and spilled everywhere, AND.....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, ironically, the scariest part of the game for me was after you make Mado stab the monster on the highway. and she wakes up. And your controls stop working and she stares at you. Yeah I shat myself bro not even gonna sugarcoat it.
Second scariest part was when the last achievement I had to get was to score 5000 POINTS ON SUPER NASU ARRGHH!! (i did it tho).
Ok so now IT'S ENDGAME TIME.
The game actually has two endings and neither of them are the same as the original. And I think I like that. The main ending... it gave Madotsuki more hope, i think - Like escaping those nightmares and getting back to living life happily. Even though the majority of the game is in the dreamworld, the further you progress, the messier Mado's room got and the more she woke up upset. Seeing the main ending made me happy for her :] I also liked the secret ending (had to look up how to do that one), I think this one implied more of an escapism ending. So not as much closure but yeah.
Overall, I really liked this game. It was a great homage to the original, had engaging puzzles, beautiful arts, and lovely OST remixes.
IN CONCLUSION:
