Barbieland, Patriarchy and Unequal Systems of Power

Spoiler alert!

Ken and the other Kens are the antagonists of the story. After he and Barbie go to the real world, Ken comes back to the Barbieland inspired by the real world's Patriarchy. He transforms Barbieland in Kendom, where Kens have all the power and all Barbies are submissive to them.

Barbie, the resistance led by Weird Barbie, and a mother and daughter she met in the real world, then save the day by pointing out all the inconsistencies and injustices women have to deal with in patriarchy. This fixes the brainwashing the Kens did on all the Barbies.

One criticism I see on the internet is that the movie was too nice and forgiving towards the Kens, and I disagree.

I don't think Ken is the villain of the story, but patriarchy itself.

I think the whole point of the film is that the patriarchy corrupts everyone, fails everyone and that unequal systems of power always breed their demise.

In the status quo of Barbieland, Kens has no jobs, are effectively homeless, and have no positions of power. They have no real independence and are just accessories to Barbies and Barbies are often dismissive of them.

This doesn't mean that Barbies are villains and Kens are the good guys. That's absurd. Barbies are often very nice and gentle with Ken, but because they are dolls. There's no real malice in any of them, which avoids all the more terrible consequences of these types of unequal systems. But it's still a system where some have all the power and resources and the others have to watch by the waist side.

The most important part here is that although Ken brings the patriarchy to Barbieland and brainwashes all the Barbies, there's no indication that he is doing that on purpose.

All we see is that Ken falls in love with a world where men rule and women are submissive and try to establish that in his homeland, and for some strange reason, all the Barbies agree with that. The Kens did not force anything on them. The Barbies for some reason, gave up their independence to live in a Ken world. There's even a joke comparing the Barbies' situation with the indigenous people's infection by colonizer's diseases, and I think that's the key to understanding the concept. If patriarchy acts like a virus that infects the Barbies, there's no indication that the same isn't true with all the Kens.

Patriarchy is a virulent ideology that infects everyone, men, and women alike. Several analyses link the Kens' sudden infatuation with patriarchy with young boys falling down the alt-right pipeline, and I think they are all correct. But there's also a subtle message here on girls being brainwashed by conservative movements.

Think about all the ways women can also be enablers of the patriarchy, of how much-internalized misogyny is a thing. Of all the women who somehow became fans of Donald Trump. Of all the TERFS. Of all women in Evangelical megachurches. Of Anita Bryant.

Is only by reminding them that the patriarchy doesn't give a hoot about their needs and well-being that they are rescued from these dangerous ideologies.

And now we reach the most important part.

The patriarchy is a system where men control and exploit other men, with misogyny being the only thing that gives this giant mess common ground. It's by making women the enemy to be controlled and exploited, that men forget that they are also being controlled and exploited.

In the end, the Barbies trick all Kens into fighting each other, and while they are busy fighting each other, the Barbies quickly reach power again.

Because Kens replace the unequal power system of Barbieland with an even more unequal system, a system that is so much worse that it actively feeds on their worst insecurities, the Kens lose, and Barbies win the day.

In the end, they are much glad that they lose, some even missing the company of their Barbie friends.

The Barbies forgive the Kens, but because they aren't saints, and won't give them everything they always wanted after being jerks with them for so long, they give a slightly more presence in Barbieland's judicial system. But this is enough to make them happy and bring peace back to Barbieland.

They are dolls, there's no actual malice in them. At their worse Kens are just jerks seduced by a poisonous real-world ideology. Real-world patriarchy is much, much worse and much more violent.

And by finding humanity in plastic dolls, maybe we can also fight cancerous ideologies that devour the brain of otherwise decent people and bring a more equal future to our real world.

Being Pewdiepie must be hilarious.

So you’re a Swedish dude that makes an ass of himself on the internet and enough people across the world relate to you enough to subscribe and actively watch your plebian videos about nothing.

You make a fraction of a penny every time someone watches you and a penny every time someone watches an ad and every time someone clicks one.

You literally have a more diverse fanbase that knows what you’re about, and more specifically, what you’re not about, than most respectable television stations that’ve been around for 20 years. You can’t be dragged or your reputation ruined among any one particular demographic, because all demographics subscribe to pewdiepie. You can’t even drag him to foreigners, because the foreigners already watch him and it backfires by them questioning your integrity and honesty.

You have no real overhead. Your income is purely you. Just... not even a trade skill. Nothing. Just you. Being yourself. Making jokes anybody could say, being silly, watching videos that anybody could search for on youtube. All you do is react and quip and people like you enough and appreciate you for being you. And you get wealthy for it.

And haters can’t fucking stand you.

You are a harmless clown that the entire Catholic church wants to broadcast exorcising the demons out of in order to put the fear of god into the little children again, making them pay attention to you and not the funny one-man-band outcompeting their whole institution and all its obligations and overhead. And you get no demons exorcised, the clown just honks his nose at you and exposes what a ridiculous lie and ritual this all is. The more they try and scavenge off you, the more silly and desperate they look. The more they try and spread rumors or make you socially untouchable, the worse their reputation looks and the less damage they do.

All Felix has to do is be himself and the entire franchise of haters sizzles like pig fat on a stove. And he’s objectively doing nothing more controversial or spicey than giggling at pictures of cats and playing Minecraft. The most harmless shit imaginable. With the occasional dropped N-bomb that any fratboy or girl has accidentally done, just in private.

And given his fanbase is diverse and good humored, also game playing, they knew there was no deliberate racial malice behind it. He wasn’t cancelled by his own fans, because they know what’s up.

I’m not really a fan of Pewdiepie’s content but watching them try and grab this greased pig to brag about it and make him go away is fucking hilarious. He can’t be cowed, bowed, made to pay up, or destroyed. And in hating on him you just expose yourself as either ignorant, a liar, or both.

The worst performing youtube video of this one loser over the last year has over 3 million views.

Compare and contrast: Comedy Central has a treasure trove of tried and proven body of work spanning 20 years, and unless it’s a notorious Dave Chappelle or Key&Pelle sketch, it barely breaks 1 million. Pewdiepie makes more in a single day of Minecrafting than Comedy Central will make in a year of the same length of video. And he doesn’t have to split the pay a bunch of ways, ‘cause he’s a self employed internet jackass.

Imagine just making youtube videos about candy and somehow pissing off the nation’s entire chain of megachurches, that now want to put you in your place as a trophy. And all you do is drop another video about Nerds candy. Living inside their heads, rent free, hurting nobody.

You can’t buy this kind of power.

Skills: Gospel is a very charismatic and manipulative teenage boy. 

Affiliation: Godfrey Megachurch; Gospel Hour, The Godfrey Show, Darkseid’s Junior Elite; Apokolips

Powers/Abilities: Due to being a half-New God, Gospel has invulnerability, super strength, super stamina, superhuman reflexes, and superhuman immunity. Like his New God family, he has mind control via persuasion. He can also put people’s attention directed at him, which he called “Popularity”. He has a New God level immunity, meaning that human diseases and toxins won’t affect him. This allows him to smoke Juul without being addicted to it.

Weaknesses: Gospel needs to speak to use his mind control, meaning if someone covers his mouth, he can’t use it.

Appearance: Gospel has blond hair and orange eyes.

Civilian: Gospel wears conservative clothes to reinforce his “pure” image. It consists of a blue blouse and black dress pants. His shoes are black.

Villain: Gospel wears a white shirt with black pants. He also wears a black hood and cape. His shirt has the black Darkseid’s Elite sigil imprinted. His steel top boots are black.

Punding: Gospel wears a gray suit whenever he goes to talk in his father’s shows or news interviews and commentary.

Personality: Gospel is a charismatic young boy who can easily manipulative large masses of people. It has gotten so powerful that people started to neglect or abandon their families to listen to him uninterrupted. Unlike his father and aunt, he’s not arrogant about his abilities and has Gilotina as his bodyguard and trainer. He has shown concern for his cousin, Goldie, due to Glorious and Grace’s overuse of her healing abilities in the church and show called “Healing Hands”, causing her to take in the injuries. This causes him to be disgusted with the show but has to continue to control Darkseid’s plans. Gospel uses his powers to easily manipulate his oblivious mother. He often gets annoyed by Malice Vundabar and her temper tantrums, especially when her uncle kept on spoiling her and never does anything to punish her. He gets bored with Romulus goes all “Theater” when talking. He isn’t disturbed much about Holmes and Andrei’s Cruelty Mansion and happy that he has expert torturers and murders as allies. Though, Gospel gets frustrated when he has to hide their “love” slave, Fumnaya, from Andrei’ wife, Nikusui, and their young son, Carlisle.

About: Gospel is the half-New God and half-human son of Glorious Godfrey and his human wife, Colleen Godfrey. He is the nephew of Amazing Grace and her human husband, Howell Doherty, and the cousin of Golden “Goldie” Rule. Gilotina, who’s human alias is Sister Glenna, is Gospel’s personal bodyguard disguised as his nanny. He and his family live in Texas. Colleen is a writer that argues for Christianity to be an established religion in the United States, introduces prayer in public school, anti-LGBTQ, and preaches about “Youth’s Moral Decay”, a belief that children are losing religious guidance and they are losing their values. As Galvin Godfrey, Gospel is a pundling, or a child pundit, a junior minister, and a televangelist in one of his father’s shows, “The Daily Gospel”. Since at a young age, Gospel managed to successfully manipulative a large mass of people when preaching in his father’s megachurch and many shows, leading Glorious to create “The Daily Gospel” for his son. As a member of Darkseid’s Junior Elite, he is a young yet powerful warrior who can sow discord for Darkseid, along with the other Junior Elites, such as Malice Vundabar, leader of the Junior Female Furies and niece of Virman Vundabar, Romulus, a young assassin and son of Kanto, and Holmes and Andrei, teenage torturers, owners of the “Cruelty Mansion”, and the sons of Desaad. Glorious arranged Gospel to marry a Level Two girl named Chrysanthe due to her metahuman abilities and skills. He wants the girl to be trained in Apokolips by Granny Goodness. He had one of the Homes’ doctor to start making her half-New God. The only thing that Gospel knows about her is how she looks like since Grace gave him pictures of the girl. He becomes enamored with her beauty. When he learns of her escape with several other Bright Future orphans when he was 10, Gospel felt only rage. So much that he released his anger onto his segment in “The Daily Gospel” in a Fire and Brimstone tactic, which actually draw in more people than he expected. He continues to do this to his older audience while using calmer and charming rhetoric to lure in a young audience for three years.

Its deliberate! The shader i wrote adds a little bit of semi-periodic rgb noise to the colors of the level. I'm trying to go more for a paper sort of look instead of like digital noise or tv-static. At the moment i think i want to keep it as subtle as possible, but if i crank it up it is very noticable:
