Favorite Disney Parks Attraction Showdown: Round 1 - Group D1
Videos and propaganda under the cut!
Jumpin' Jellyfish: California Adventure, Tokyo Disneysea
Propaganda:
"This was my absolute favorite ride as a young undiagnosed autistic little girl. I would make a family member (usually my mom) ride it with me over and over and over and over. I don't know why they put up with it lmao, but Jumping Jellyfish will always hold a special place in my heart because of little like 5 year old me "
youtube
Maliboomer: California Adventure (2001-2010)
Propaganda:
"Listen. Yes, I know the vomit/scream shields were gross, but they were part of the charm! This was one of my favorite rides before they tore it down (supposedly for not being "family friendly" enough. Or at least that's the rumor I was told. It could be wrong, but if it's not wrong, it's a really stupid reason. Especially since they replaced it with a smoking park). If you're not familiar with it: you would be strapped into one of 16 seats all placed around a center square pillar. Then the seats would slowly rise up the pillar a few feet, until they would suddenly shoot way up to the top (150 ft tall. It was the tallest ride at the park. I think technically Tower of Terror was taller, but that was the building. Not the actual ride part). Then when at the top, they would free fall back down. This would repeat a couple of times and that was it. It was amazing. When at the very top, right before falling, you would feel like you were floating for a second. I loved it. You also got an amazing view of the city for that brief moment. The best part? It almost never had a line. My siblings and I would always just walk right on whenever we passed by it and the operators would let us ride it again as many times as we wanted. I miss it :( "

There's a phrase I grew up with in theatre production: The actors are the cake, the theatre production is the icing.
Think of a theme park ride's main idea as the cake and everything else as the icing. A drop-ride can be as overly decorated (Tower of Terror) or under decorated (Maliboomer) as possible but what matters is whether you get that perfect drop thrill or not. In the case of dark rides, you need some kind of good story or at least a good set of scenes that tell a story on their own. Note how the most memorable dark rides at Disney often tell a pretty good story with their visuals alone and occasionally good narration (Ghost Host, Jungle Cruise Skipper, etc) and even cheap Halloween haunts can still be effective w good scenery and story (and very good actor/animatronic placement for scares).
I think what I'm hearing from these rides is it has a very good expensive well-decorated icing, but the cake is pretty dry. That's my guess anyway I'm no expert just someone that spends every October telling folks "Please don't touch the clown heads on the spikes."
I don't know what it is. I didn't like the DisneySea Frozen ride because it's just a retelling of the movie's story, but I never disliked the Little Mermaid ride even though it does the exact same thing. I also find myself liking the new Tangled ride, or at least what I've seen of it so far, even though it also does the exact same thing. I don't really know what's making the difference. Maybe it's the Frozen ride's huge empty sets and use of doors, which I don't care for? Maybe in Ariel and Tangled, the sets are designed so that you feel more "in" the story, rather than just watching it happen in front of you? People who also disliked Frozen Journey, what do you think of those other two rides?
#I don't have a solid opinion cause I didn't grow up w these films#but I will say I am also sick of Frozen#although the references in Zootopia still land perfectly

Question.
Was the Astro Orbitor designed to be a Treasure Planet ride? I mean its right on the edge of Tomorrowland, next to now-gone French Fry Rocks, in a spacepunk setting, towards the other 3 lands, matching Treasure Planetās Genres.
And were the Rocket Rods also supposed to be Atlantis: The lost Empire in some way? It goes past fantasyland, and its also in tomorrowland, towards main street, towards adventureland and frontierland (echoes of cast?). Also the observatron looks like itād fit the movieās style
Also I have a feeling Innoventions was themed subtly to Meet the Robinsons, considering the architecture, and the use of gold.
Maybe The Orange Stinger was incognito a James and the Giant Peach ride, considering you are INSECTS inside a GIANT FRUIT floating on water.
Or Maybe the Maliboomer was secretly a Honey, I blew up the Kid Ride, being in the Giant Things and most lit area.
The Golden Zephyr being a Rocketeer-esque ride, placed next to the Farm and with Art Deco Inspiration
And Mullholland Madness had a theme towards the Goofy Movie at one point (It would have been a bit more successful), placed on Route 66.
I think Eisner was onto something, but never got all the way with it.
Also Schmoozies and Award Wieners feel of 2000s Disney Channel to this day.

Idk my biggest fear, but i know im scared of heights. But im more scared of the up then the down. Like Im great with coasters except for the slow build up part, any launch ones im fine with tho as i that part ends fast.
Ive also gone on all the elevator rides at the theme parks ive been to. But maybe im just a masochist idk dhdhehe. I cried on the disney ferris wheel though, kinda removed all the cred i had gotten from going on the maliboomer and california adventure right before several times. Turns out my fear or heights won out as i loved those rides, but the ferris wheel was 20x more terrifying to me. šššššš
Heights huh? And you weāre fine with the elevator rides? What if, letās say, there was an elevator entirely made of glass on a sky scraper? Even the bottom would be glass. And what if you could look all the way down from the top after you get higher and higher, floor by floor, and you could see just how high you were? What if you were higher than most buildings? You know that little tickle in your stomach you get from being up so high? I bet youād be so scared the glass would just shatter right under your feet. Now imagine how terrifying it would be if the wires holding the elevator snapped in an instant. What if you were sent you plummeting towards the earth from so high up while locked in that glass elevator, watching as the ground approaches you fast, knowing that everything would be all over once you hit the bottom from the top of a sky scraper in just seconds.

A lot of people are still (understandably) confused about whatās part of this project. The conversion to Pixar Pier means the closure/conversion of Arielās Grotto, Cove Bar, California Screaminā, and all of the gift shops on the pier side of the area. Basically, anything between Arielās Grotto and the old Maliboomer is being Pixar-ified. (Plus Mickey on the Fun Wheel.)
Anything between Silly Symphony Swings and the Little Mermaid ~ Arielās Undersea Adventure will become a new land called Paradise Park.

tell me more stupid things that disney has done
so itās 2001. disneyās california adventure has just opened and thereās a ride called superstar limo. iām just gonna let you watch that video. just watch that video and then come back here for the rest of the story.
did you watch the video? ok good. if youāve never fucking heard of this ride before, thatās the reason why. it was TERRIBLE. i can say this for a fact because i rode it. several times. iām one of the few people whoās ever ridden it because it was taken out in 2002. (iām also one of the few people whoās ridden rocket rods, which is Another Story Entirely and not a fun one.)
apparently, according to Rumor, the ride was supposed to be less terrible and more like??? thrilling??? the paparazzi were supposed to be chasing you and shit was gonna be wild!!! then princess diana died and disney was likeĀ āyikesā and we ended up with . . . superstar limo. whoops??????
more dumb stories under the cut
idk if this is common knowledge but itās my favorite stupid story. so like. disneyland is built on a former orange grove. like, walt disney bought a fucking orange grove and he was gonna put his train in and have a nice lil park with some orange trees and shit. they even marked all the trees they wanted to cut down with one color and the ones they wanted to keep with another color!
there was only one problem with this plan: the person operating the tree cutting machine was colorblind. so he just indiscriminately cut down all the trees and no thereās no orange trees in disneyland whoops.
also when they first put in maliboomer, for the first like . . . week? i wanna say it was like a week, they didnāt have plastic shields. the yesterland page is slightly incorrect: those plastic shields were there to dampen screams, sure, but they also served a far more important purpose! to, uh. to keep the puke from people from flying like projectile vomit everywhere.
disney didnāt really think that one through. nor did they think the replacement parade for the mainstreet electrical parade through!
light magic was a super technologically advanced parade. it had thousands of miles of fiber optics! it required like twenty computers to run! THERE WERE CONFETTI CANNONS. there was, uh. only one problem:
OH GOD KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!!!!!
light magic ran for like . . . four months. i saw it three or four times and i even danced it in once (my mom reports i Really Did Not Want To) but i donāt think i ever saw it fully working? the stages only worked sometimes, there was a bunch of technical issues, and the parade was supposed to come back in 2000 but it just . . . never did. sometimes disney knows when theyāve done things wrong and just pretends they never happened.
anyway this is slightly off-topic, but to finish hereās the story of the worst 45 minutes iāve ever spent at disneyland:
my favorite ride is pirates of the caribbean. itās always been pirates, even before the movies came out, so i basically ride pirates every time iām at disney. this time was no exception! weāre in our boat, floating along and listening to the bad banjo music and just entering the tunnel when it happens: a lady climbs out of the boat with her baby.
i donāt know how she fucking managed to climb out of the boat and onto the small, dimly lit decorative ledge but she did and sheās got a crying baby. now, yaāll know disney has got safety on lock so they shut down the fucking ride. iām not too worried at first because??? like???? surely once this lady hears the nice cast members telling her to stay still so a cast member can come and get her (thereās also an emergency exit on this ledge) but nah.
forty. five. minutes.
i am stuck in the hellish loop of bad banjo music for FORTY. FIVE. MINUTES. they tell this lady to stay still so a cast member can come get her in english! they tell her in spanish! they must have found the one cast member in the park who could speak french to do the announcement in french! NOTHING.
FORTY FIVE MINUTES, THIS ONE GODDAMN LADY IS HOLDING UP PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN.
they did finally get her off the ledge and the ride restarted and i was freed from banjo hell but dear lord i hated every second of that forty five minutes.
the moral of the story is even disney makes mistakes and i hate tourists.

Midday Hues by KGSImaging Via Flickr: Paradise Pier is so much fun - and it's in such a great spot for sunsets! This spot has been stellar since the park opened in 2001 2010 updates! But there's still so much farther for it to go - they need to take the new theme just a little bit farther! Where's the new queue building for Screamin'? And the re-theme of those corny shops at the end of the pier. And lets not even bring up that horrific "park" on the grave site of Maliboomer! As I mentioned a few days ago, one of my goals for 2014 is to get better at photoshop -and well this image is quite the layer of love with over 13 of them! In the last few days I picked up a pretty good book that's already taught me tons, and I've been watching/listening to a few new Youtube channels on the side. I'm incorporating brand new techniques (some of which I don't quite understand yet - something that undoubtedly needs to change) to get these shorts to you. For instance, if you look in the glass of Arial's Grotto here you'll see a waviness. That waviness was very poorly clarified when I turned the Nik Sharpener to it (it was all but eliminated) so I used a new sharpening technique. I created a visible duplicate layer, desaturated it, changed the mix mode to "linear light" and applied a "high pass" filter to the shot. Why this works? I haven't the clue yet. But I'm going to figure it out. KGS IMAGING | FACEBOOK | TWITTER | ME
