Strange Aeon's 2 hour long video covering old LotR sent me on one hell of an emotional journey. Not necessarily because of what happened, though that was 18 layers of fucked up, but because of the people I've known.

The people involved were of the same age as me. A large chunk of the events took place in the area where I live. I've known several shitty, manipulative transmen in the area. And further people who weren't trans when I knew them, such things change. Either way they were all awful and all way too deep into fandom. So the entire time it was a journey of "Do I know these people?!"

Ultimately I realized no, cause I didn't know anyone that deep into LotR. But holy hell.

First thought was my former roommate. Someone who'd been a friend for years before, and just mooched off me once he moved in. He was deeply involved with fandom and tried to run a convention, and got involved in projects with some moderately famous people. He severely dropped the ball on a guest for the convention and I thought we might end up with someone crashing at our apartment. He had the sort of charisma that drew people to him and those he left in his wake had a sort of informal support group. But he was just similar and could have known those people but definitely wasn't directly involved.

Then I knew someone who looked a lot like the main perpetrator. Like when the photos were first shown, it was uncanny. But no, his primary fandom was Transformers. And while he had some serious issues, his partner was the primary manipulator. They're the one I most highly suspect of trying to spread a rumor that I "kinned" my own OC.

And then there was the one that was hardest to rule out, because I don't know him personally. I had to ask HZZ if he'd ever lived in the area. And that was @malhare ex. Only when ages were mentioned did I relax cause he's a lot younger than the guy in the video. At least I think he is. Then I remembered the whole thing started with raunchy hobbit smut. And iirc this particular man-of-many-names thinks anything more than handholding his too much.

And because I know people love to take things out of context: I am not saying all transmen are evil manipulative conmen. I'm a transman myself. I know lots of amazing transmen. I just also fell in with some really awful people until I learned better.
