Come Home (I've Been Waiting For You For So Long)
Entry for the @malectober Malectine's Day 2023 Challenge
Prompt: Promise
Word Count: 3.5k
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Everyone had a soulmate, even warlocks. The problem with being a warlock, though, was the fact that immortality made it impossible to know when your soulmate would finally be born. Magnus thought the universe was being cruel on him for making him wait 400 years and counting.
He knew he had a soulmate though, because the moment he turned 16 he had to go through the same ritual as everyone else: making the promise.

MALECTOBER 2022 DAY 16 + EXTRA 1—RINGS & HANDS
Tumblr media
@malectober
(tw: implications of sexual activity)
Max was in his high-chair, giggling. Alec was attempting to feed him, but Max only ever opened his mouth so Alec can spoon the food in if the person feeding him said, "Here comes the airplane!"
(And with every spoonful, the vehicle had to be a different one. Otherwise the little menace wouldn't eat.)
Alec was running out of vehicles. "Here comes the—uh ... ice-cream truck?"
Max happily opened his mouth and let Alec feed him another mouthful. Alec smiled at him. He may be a pain to feed, but nothing could deter Alec from bestowing loving smiles upon his child.
"Here comes the ... jet ski," he tried again. Once again, Max let his father feed him. Max gifted him with a mostly-toothless grin.
Alec prepared another spoonful. "Here comes the—sweet holy Lord," he spluttered.
Magnus had just entered the kitchen and looked absolutely magnificent.
"Here comes the Lord?" he asked curiously. Max was still waiting with his mouth open. Alec could do nothing but stare at his fiancé, agape.
"You—you look—" He couldn't even form full sentences, dammit. "My god, you look divine." There, he did it.
Magnus walked over to him with a shit-eating grin and carefully guided Alec's still-outstretched hand towards their son's mouth. Max happily gulped down the food.
"Do I, now?" Magnus murmured. Alec swallowed and nodded fiercely. Magnus chuckled. "Yeah, well, guess what."
"What?" Alec said, feeding Max another mouthful with a, "Here comes the hearse!"
"I convinced Catarina to watch Max for exactly three hours," Magnus told him, arching an eyebrow. "Which means we have three hours to spend as we please."
Alec stared, then asked, "When?"
"In about two hours. I figured, you know ... we deserve a bit of us time. I haven't been alone with you in ages."
"Yeah." Alec got up to put the food away because Max refused to eat anymore. "I ... missed you, even though we were always together."
"I know what you mean. I missed you, too," Magnus said. He bent down next to Max's chair and sang, "Looks like baby's all full to eat anymore, eh? Who's Papa's little imp? Huh? Huh? Yes, you are!"
Max shrieked with laughter. Both his parents smiled. Yes, three hours would do them good.
___
"Thanks again, Cat. Bye-bye, Blueberry! We'll see you soon," Magnus promised with a kiss to the boy's forehead. Alec came over and planted a kiss onto the boy's curls.
"You'll be okay?" he asked Catarina.
"Don't worry," she replied, "this darling will be fine."
Alec breathed in relief. "Really, thank you."
"No problem." She turned away. "Bye now. Max, say bye to your dads!"
"BAAAAAAAAAAA!" Max cried, making them all laugh. Then Cat left, holding their baby, and they were left alone.
"So ..." Magnus turned to his fiancé, a cheeky grin on his face. "Whatchu wanna do?"
___
They lay in bed, panting softly. Alec turned and laced their hands together.
"I'm sorry about that moment earlier," Magnus apologised, "I should've taken my rings off."
"No, no, it's okay. And you know I love your rings." Alec kissed one of said rings. "I love every part of you, baby."
Magnus smiled and kissed him. Then he slid a ring off his finger and placed it onto Alec's. "You look pretty with rings, too. You should wear them sometimes."
Alec stared at Magnus's ring on his finger, thinking of a day another ring would be put on that finger. But those were thoughts for another time, when the world would be different. "Hm. Yeah."
Hands still intertwined, Alec nicked a couple more rings off Magnus's fingers. The latter snorted, waiting curiously. Alec put those rings on and just stared at his hand.
"Keep those," Magnus said quietly, rubbing loving circles onto Alec's knuckles. Alec smiled.
"You know what, I think I will." Alec sat up suddenly, and retrieved the Lightwood family ring from where it sat on the bedside table. He slid that on, too, and lay back down.
Magnus brought their entwined hands to his lips and kissed them. Alec let him, gazing at him silently through his eyelashes.
"Every single part of you is such a miracle to me," Magnus whispered. "Your eyes. I've never seen such beautiful and expressive eyes. And your lips ..." He kissed those lips, a smile curving both their mouths all the while. "And your hands, darling ... capable and strong, unfailing and caring. When they hold onto my own, when they hold our son, when they let arrows fly ... you're a wonder, such a wonder. And you don't even realize just how much."
Alec allowed himself to sink into those loving words. He closed his eyes and murmured, "I love you so much, gorgeous."
"You know I love you, too." The warlock traced invisible patterns onto his fiancé's skin. "And I love those rings on your hands. A very good combo."
Alec huffed out a laugh. "Hey. We have like an hour and a half left. Wanna go for a walk and maybe a bite to eat?"
"Sounds like a plan." They slowly got up and put their clothes back on. Alec left the rings right there where they were, shimmering and sparkling on his fingers. Magnus noticed and smiled to himself.
They left the house, still holding hands. They went to Taki's, talked and laughed and reminisced. It was just like in the beginning, when they were still getting used to each other, to loving and being with the other.
But now, they knew they did.

Malectober Day 16: Rings
It was early morning when Alec woke. A crack in the curtains told him that it was still dark outside. Magnus was still asleep, and Alec clambered out of bed carefully so as not to wake him. He dressed quickly in the dark room, then padded quietly out of the bedroom and down the hall. He checked on the boys in their rooms, glancing inside Rafe’s room first, then Max’s. They were both still sleeping soundly.
In the kitchen, Alec brewed coffee for himself and Magnus. He left Magnus’s mug on the bedside table beside him before he left the apartment. Magnus could have made him a portal to the Institute, but Magnus was exhausted too and Alec didn’t want to ask him to make a Portal over such a short distance. It wasn’t far on the train. Besides, Alec quite enjoyed his early morning walks through the city.
At the Institute, Alec pushed open the heavy doub;e doors and stepped inside the echoing entrance hall. It was very quiet inside. No one else seemed to be away yet. Alec knew he should start working — there were reports coming in from Institutes all over the world following the exodus from Idris — but there was something he wanted to do first, and it would only take a few minutes.
He turned into one of the corridors, following it until he reached a particular wooden door. This was the Institute’s music room, not often used these days but with a collection of instruments inside. For the past two weeks, it had also been housing something else.
Alec opened the door and stepped inside, smiling involuntarily as he saw the room’s contents again. Neat stacks of blue silk banners, embossed with golden runes, lay on the shelves. A crate filled with warlock-made torches, that burned with a bright gold flame, was pushed against a wall. The room was filled with the scent of fresh-cut flowers, hundreds of them in tubs of water around the room. They were mostly in shades of yellow and gold, with splashes of white and purple and orange mixed in. Alec brushed his fingers over a yellow rose, then a blue cornflower. He hoped Magnus would like them.
Alec crossed the room, wanting to check one last thing. Most of the items in this room had been here for less than two weeks, accumulated gradually. But there was one thing that had been here for much longer than that.
It was a small wooden box, dark teakwood carved with a pattern of Lightwood flames. Alec’s smile grew as he traced the pattern.
Nearly a year ago now, Alec had approached Jace with a slightly unusual request. He’d asked Jace with him to buy wedding rings for when Alec and Magnus could eventually get married. To his credit, Jace had gone with him without teasing or asking questions. He’d simply understood that this was something important to Alec. He’d even tracked down an excellent faerie goldsmith to make the rings. Alec had borrowed one of Magnus’s own rings so the smith could get the size right, stealthily returning it to his jewellry box later. He’d asked Jace to keep the rings at the Institute for him, where Magnus wouldn’t find them by accident.
Alec thought back to that day now, as he opened the box and saw the two gold rings, nestled together on their bed of blue velvet. He’d thought for a long time about what they should look like, and what Magnus would like. Typically, Shadowhunters getting married exchanged family rings. But Magnus didn’t have a family ring, and so Alec had borrowed from the mundane tradition of wedding rings. Shadowhunter family rings were silver, generally, but he and Jace had both agreed that these should be gold, to differentiate them from the Lightwood ring that Alec already wore. He’d gone with the flame design though, both because it was the symbol of his family and because it reminded him of the blue flames of Magnus’s magic. “It’s like a double meaning.” Jace had said enthusiastically. “Very clever. Magnus will love it.”
Alec hoped he was right. The inside of the rings was engraved with the words Aku cinta kamu, Indonesian for “I love you.” He was certain Magnus would like that.
Alec ran his thumb over the two gold circles. He would have liked to make the rings with his own hands — he knew several Shadowhunters who could have taught him metalworking — but it took years to achieve the skill needed to make something so delicate. Alec wanted the rings to be perfect. He wanted Magnus to be surprised and delighted by every tiny detail at their wedding.
Their wedding. It was so close it didn’t seem possible. One of Alec’s first actions as Consul had been to amend the laws of Shadowhunter marriages, making it so that Shadowhunters and Dowhworlders could marry in a Shadowhunter ceremony if they wanted. He hadn't told Magnus. All of this was a surprise, kept secret by everyone that had helped Alec organize everything. If everything went to plan — if Magnus accepted his proposal — they would be getting married tomorrow night. The thought of it made Alec both excited and nervous. He didn’t honestly think that Magnus would reject the proposal — they had wanted to get married for years — but it was in his nature to worry. He wanted everything to be perfect.
Alec took the rings from the box and held them in his palm for a minute, before replacing them in the box. Tomorrow they, along with everything else in this room, would be transported to Los Angeles via Portal, courtesy of Catarina and Ragnor. Magnus thought they were just going to a party to celebrate Helen and Aline being made Heads of the LA Institute. He had no idea about the surprise Alec had planned.
Alec looked at the rings one last time, nestled in the deep blue velvet. He shut the box and replaced it carefully on the shelf. He couldn’t help thinking of the rings Magnus wore every day, collected over centuries, dazzling with rubies and emeralds and sapphires. He hoped that after tomorrow, Magnus would have a new ring to wear, one that he never took off. Alec remembered hearing somewhere that rings were originally used as a symbol of marriage because they were a circle, and a circle has no end. That was what he wanted for himself and Magnus — a love unbroken, with no end, eternal.

So, it's time for me to end this challenge.
As much as I wanted to write every prompts until the end, I have to face the fact that between the courses and the exams, I don't have enough time to spend writing every day and I have accumulated to much late these days.
I'm a little bit sad and disappointed but also proud of me because it's the first time that I've gone this far on an October challenge !
So I would like to thank a lot this incredible @malectober idea, thanks to which I discovered a lot of very talented people. I hope it will come back next year for more malec content !
Thank you for all the interactions around my fics, I had a lot of little reviews that made me laugh every time and encouraged me to write more !
To finish, I've looked at the prompts you liked the most and the least on my page, and I must admit that I did not expect that 😂
Most liked fic : Day 21 - Curse
Guess it made you laugh 😂 (me too)
Least liked fic : Day 15 and 16 : Silk + Cult + Ring
You didn't like the spice 😭🌶️
I'll continue to write little fics and to draw sometimes for those who are interested so don't hesitate to come say hi or comment if you want to make a small artist happy ☀️
Stay safe people and may the creativity never leave you 💕
