Last stop!

The sun shone through a window on the far end of the corridor as Cullen walked down. The wooden boards creaked, and the motes reflected brilliant lights. It was a beautiful day. A sunny day. The kind of day that made one giddy.

And Cullen’s heartbeats drummed in his ears. After months of waiting, after hundreds of miles of travel, he was here, facing the door to Room 5.

He checked himself one more time, shedding his shirt of any stray dust from the road, and breathed deeply. When the anticipation reached the apogee, he knocked on the door. The sound seemed to echo.

“Come,” a deep voice resounded from within.

Cullen twisted the doorknob and swung the door open. He took a small step forward and entered the room.

An ambient noise of the bustling street trickled in from outside. Rupert, as the man was referred to, sat by the latticed window. His gaze was directed away while he held a thin book on his right hand.

On the bedside table was a steel prosthesis articulated into a forearm and a hand.

A frisson swept over Cullen’s body, and he had to bite down on his lip for a moment to stopper the emotion from entirely overwhelming him.

He began to love your child like his own, it honestly didn't take long

And your kid began to see him like another father

Dorian

Dorian isn't that fond of children

But he'll tolerate your kid, for you of course

The more he spends time with your kid, the more he enjoys children

Mainly because your kid is starting to see him as a second father, and it's wholesome

He, of course, will never admit it, but he really does enjoy spending time with your kid

Cassandra

She isn't the best with kids, being a warrior and all

Especially when they cry

But she'll do her best, but she is a good cook, so your kid gets alot of good food

She likes to spoil kids

Being around your kid has brought some comfort to her

Varric

He's great with kids

He'll read them story's, come up with the perfect fantasys for your kid

He's perfect at it and perks for him already being a sorta father figure

It's almost like he was a dad, or is one

I decided to go back to my roots in Dragon Age to try to get my writing mojo back and participated in the Dragon Age Big Bang this year with a (not so) simple story about friendship, separation, and the reforging of that friendship fifteen years later.

Instead of posting an Honor and Will chapter like I said I would (welp), I decided to finally post a one-shot I’ve been saving for some time. Despite its dark theme, it felt right to post it.

In these apocalyptic days, it was hard to be hopeful about anything. Still, Cullen had had two rounds of job interviews at a small software company in San Francisco and was now waiting for the final response. He managed to scrape together something that resembled eagerness. Cullen shuffled to the living room, opened his laptop, and pulled up his email account.

It was almost serendipitous how the email from the company was perched on top of the inbox. The title read, Our Final Response. His heart began to pound hard and his throat dried as he clicked the email open.

Dear Mr. Rutherford:

We would like to thank you for your application. We were impressed with your resume and how you conducted yourself during the interviews. Unfortunately, your current location and the consequent inability to collaborate directly…

Cullen thought his heart ceased beating for a moment. It hadn’t. He had merely forgotten to breathe. He let his eyes blur out of focus and covered his face. It wasn’t necessary to finish reading the email. “Fuck…” he exhaled, “fuck, fuck, fuck…”

If only I was not married to Tharin…

He bit down on his lower lip until it throbbed with dull pain. He could not think that way about his husband, the love of his life. Who had done nothing wrong.

Self-loathing was the preferred option. Cullen let go of self-restraint, and it returned with vengeance, a tsunami of an emotion far more vicious than before. Now, he could hear the diatribes loud and clear.

You will never be useful to anyone. You will always be dependent on Thar to provide for everything. You’re a failure of a man.

He was tired of all this. So tired. A low hum emanated from within, commanding his attention. It rumbled, Things can never get better, so why bother?

For a while, an indeterminate length of time that was long enough to trouble him, Cullen had been wishing he could just disappear and not encumber Tharin anymore. Disappear without a trace, as though he had never existed in the first place. Forgotten and buried. And Tharin would be happier. Happier than Cullen could make him anyway.
