Note
hello!!! I don't really know if we have an answer in canon, but I kinda see it as Malcolm being the youngest of the team (not by much, perhaps by a year), then Dani, then JT. Idk but for me it makes sense with their dynamic x)
I think malcolm is the only one where we know his actual age (he was 10 in 1998, so around 31 in 2019 when the show started). I think dani might be younger just bc her actress is younger than tom by a good amount, but I imagine they're both meant to be younger than JT and maybe a bit younger than edrisa!

It had been a week.
A whole week since you had seen or heard from Malcolm Bright.
Not that you were keeping track or anything.
Nope.
Certainly not.
You shifted the strap of your bag as you headed up the steps towards the lecture of the day. However you were unable to go into your building. You let out a frustrated groan as you tried to push your way through the crowd. You were already in enough debt, you were going to be damned if you missed one of your few lectures because of a demonstration.
“What the fuck?” you said when you finally managed to push your way to the front
“Haven’t you heard?” someone said next to you, “there’s been a murder.”
“A… murder?”
“Ooh yes,” they looked over at you, a grin of their face, “pretty gory from what I’ve heard. Apparently someone got beheaded.”
“No,” the person on your other side shook his head, “disembowelled. That’s what I’m hearing.”
“Where have you heard this from?” you asked, “getting disembowelled is pretty different from beheading.”
“Oh y’know,” the man shrugged, “here and there. But if you think about it, the two aren’t too different. Both were used as part of executions.”
Another beheading. You pursed your lips in thought as the people around you started arguing but you tuned that out. However, you were dragged back out of your thoughts when you saw Malcolm exit the building. The two of you made eye contact and he gave you a small smile. You could feel your face get hot and you turned on your heel and marched away. You only managed to get a couple of steps when a strong hand curled around our arm.
“We need to interview all the witnesses,” said JT, “and now that you’re here you’re one of them.”
*
“The first I heard about this was when I came here this morning,” you said, several hours later, “believe me, if I had known another murder had taken place I wouldn’t have come.”
“We know.” Said JT
“All I know is that someone has died,” you said, “I don’t even know how they died.”
“We know.” Said Dani
“So why am I here?”
JT and Dani didn’t answer as they led you down the corridors of your university. You hesitated slightly when saw Malcolm and Gil waiting at the end of the corridor.
“You alright?” asked JT
“Yeah, there isn’t a body in there? Heard that someone got disembowelled.”
“Oh no, they wouldn’t have had time to with the time they had. Besides, the head beside the body clearly shows what the cause of death was.”
You jumped slightly and looked at the woman who appeared by your side. She gave you a big grin and held out her hand.
“Edrisa,” she said as you shook it, “and you must be y/n. I’ve heard a lot about you from Malcolm.”
“You have?”
You glanced at Malcolm who had gone slightly pink. He pointedly looked away and Edrisa glanced between you.
“Well,” she said, “he might’ve mentioned you once or twice.”
“While discussing murders?”
Edrisa grinned and nodded. You couldn’t help but smile at her enthusiasm which was contagious. Maybe there was someone else in this team that you liked.
“Look,” said Malcolm, diverting your attention to him, “there has been another murder and we need to know if they’re linked.”
“Surely you’ll be able to do it?” you asked
“I thought it would be best to get a second opinion.”
“Lots of paintings of beheadings,” you said, “might not be linked. Could just be some madman with an axe.”
“Didn’t say it was an axe.” Said Malcolm
“Oh yes, they used a sword instead. Axe is more common. So, what was unusual about this? Besides from the fact that someone is going around cutting people’s heads off?”
“Despite the victim being blindfolded?” Malcolm said as he took a step closer, “and wearing her nightdress.”
“Could be a sex act gone wrong. No need to kink shame Malc.”
Malcolm smiled slightly and shook his head. You rolled your eyes and said,
“What?”
“Malc.” He said with a knowing look
“-olm,” you finished quickly, “Malcolm. This is nothing to do with me. None of it is. Now let me continue with my life.”
You turned on your heel and quickly marched away. Malcolm watched you go and Edrisa looked over at Dani and JT.
“What was weird,” she said, “was the weird? Am I the only one who found that weird?”
“Nah,” said JT, “that’s usual for them.”

The Lows of Highs- Malcolm Bright x OC
Malcolm Bright x Elena Nadis
Description: Malcolm accidentally inhales cocaine and ends up scaring his girlfriend with the after effects.
Word Count: 2.7k
“I’m telling you right now Dani, stay away from this case. And that is an order,” Gil demanded firmly. Elena tried not to make it obvious that she had been listening to the conversation, but with both parties being defensive, she couldn’t help herself and she looked over at the duo, who were standing in front of Gil’s office having a small staredown.
They were investigating the murders of two men related to some drug dealing. A theory was formed that the murders were related to a man named Estime. Dani, who had previously worked in narcotics, had been insisting that he had nothing to do with it. Gil decided to set up a meeting with Estime’s archrival, Saulo, but the man claimed he also had nothing to do with it. Now that they were back at HQ, everyone could see that Dani was personally invested in this case, so Gil suggested that she step back from it. That led them to a small argument, which is how they ended up here.
Gil didn’t give her time to argue as he walked away, supposedly to go visit Edrisa down in the lab. Dani huffed annoyedly, then walked over to her desk and grabbed her jacket while Elena watched. The girl furrowed her brows at her friend.
“Where are you going?” She asked suspiciously as Dani passed by her.
“To see Estime,” the woman answered simply. That made Malcolm, who was sitting a few feet away, perk up.
“I’m going too,” he said, standing up from his seat.
“What? No you’re not,” Dani shot back.
“Oh, well I guess I could always tell Gil that you’re going. I don’t think he’d be too happy about that though,” he trailed off, pulling his phone out of his pocket. Dani quickly put her hand out.
“Alright fine, hurry up though,” she grumbled.
“Should I come too?” Elena asked unsurely, but her friend shook her head.
“Nah, I don't want to risk Gil getting mad at all three of us,” she responded. “Don’t worry about it, I just want to make sure.” Though hesitant, Elena ultimately nodded.
“You’ll call me if you need help?” She questioned, not wanting to be out of the loop. Dani grinned then nodded.
“Who else would I call?” She rested a hand on the girl’s shoulder before heading out.
“I’ll be back soon,” Malcolm informed his fiance, leaning down to press a kiss to her lips before following after Dani. Elena could only sigh as she watched the woman’s car drive off, hoping that he was right.
As it turns out, he wasn’t right. Elena was at lunch when she got a call from Gil. She had to pretend to be shocked when he told her that Malcolm and Dani disobeyed orders and went to see Estime at his club, only to become actually surprised when he said that the club was shot up. No one was hurt, but Malcolm was near a large bag of cocaine when the shooter walked in and he inhaled quite a bit. Gil asked her to come get her fiance and take him home, to which she readily agreed.
It only took her a few minutes to arrive at the station, where Malcolm was sitting in the lobby with Dani, both looking like children caught with their hands in the cookie jar. Gil stood beside them with his hands on his hips, looking as if he was muttering to himself. She walked in hurriedly, which caught the trio’s attention.
“Hey, sorry to pull you from your lunch break,” Gil started tiredly, but Elena only shook her head with a patient smile.
“It’s no problem Gil. Don’t worry about it,” she responded simply, earning a nod from the man in front of her.
“Malcolm needs to get some rest, and Dani is grounded under my supervision since I evidently can’t trust her,” he paused to shoot the detective a pointed look. “But I can pay you for the rest of the day,” he offered. Elena nodded then patted his arm gently.
“I’ll take care of him. You just focus on getting this guy.” Gil nodded with a grateful smile.
“I’ll call you if we get any more information,” he informed her before grabbing Dani’s arm and leading her away. Elena sighed softly, then faced her fiance, whose gaze was still focused on the floor. She cleared her throat then crouched down in front of him.
“Malcolm,” she called softly, which caught his attention. A comically wide smile suddenly appeared on his face at the sight of her.
“Hey baby,” he said, words slightly slurred yet still sounding lively. Elena copied his grin, though hers was a bit exaggerated.
“Hey, you ready to go home?” She inquired, tone still gentle. Malcolm nodded lazily, and she stood up. She helped him up and led him out with her hand gripping his. The man’s eyes were becoming droopy, so she had to take extra care in making sure he didn’t run into anyone or anything. The car ride didn’t take long, and they got home in less than fifteen minutes.
“Alright, let’s get you into your pajamas then you can take a nap,” she instructed as she led him upstairs. “Do you want to take a nap?” She asked as if she were talking to a child. Usually, Malcolm would despise such a tone, but in his intoxicated state, he found it quite enjoyable and nodded lazily.
It was quite a hassle to get him into his pajamas, he wasn’t much help and instead opted to just sit on the bed and let her do it herself. Finally, she laid him down and covered him up, informing him that she would get a head start on dinner for when he woke up. Pushing some hair out of his face, she leaned down and pressed a kiss to his forehead before turning off the light then heading out.
Just a half hour later, Elena had been prepping to cut some vegetables for the sides when she heard a thump. She wouldn’t have been worried if it hadn’t been followed by a crash. Her head whipped around as a horrifying realization hit her: she never restrained Malcolm before he fell asleep.
“Malcolm?” She called worriedly, running to their bedroom. She attempted to jiggle the doorknob, but it felt like there was something blocking the door. That made her panic more and she began banging on the door.
“Malcolm! Baby, open up!” She yelled. No verbal response came, but instead came another bang followed immediately by shattering glass and a loud cry. Elena gasped worriedly then stepped back, attempting to kick the door in. It took several tries, but she finally managed to kick the door open enough to squeeze through the limited space between it and the doorway. She flipped the lightswitch on and her eyes immediately widened.
The room looked to be an absolute mess. Turns out, it was their dresser that had been slid in front of the door. Aside from that, the nightstands were flipped, pictures that originally hung on the wall were thrown to the ground, and the full length mirror had been shattered, pieces of broken glass laying on the ground in front of it. After surveying the area, her eyes finally landed on her fiance. He had been attempting to climb out the window, but froze when the girl burst in. Once he got over the shock, he continued his attempt.
“MALCOLM NO!” Elena screamed, rushing over to him and making sure not to step on any shards of glass. Thankfully, she reached him just before he managed to climb on the ledge that sat right outside the window. She gripped the back of his shirt tightly then used all the strength she had to pull him back in, thanking any god out there that he was disoriented and didn’t have strength to fight against her. The two of them fell on the bed, Malcolm on top of Elena. He wasted no time in attempting to get up, but she was quick to hold him down, flipping them over a second later. She had to sit on his chest to keep him still as she grabbed the restraints, wrapping them tightly around his wrists.
“NO! NO, LET ME GO!” He yelled frantically after she moved off his chest. She was frozen in place as he continued to scream desperately to be let go. Elena couldn’t stay in the room for long, his yells became very overwhelming very quickly. She needed help. Frantically, she stumbled through the doorway then began searching for her phone, finding it on the kitchen counter where she had left it earlier. She picked up with shaky hands then quickly dialed Gil’s number. She hadn’t even realized that she had begun crying until a teardrop landed on her screen, which she wiped away before putting the phone to her ear.
“Gil Arroyo,” the man greeted formally, though he dropped the formality when he heard the girl sniffle from the other end of the line.
“Gil I need your help,” she begged, whimpering as Malcolm’s shouts began filling her ears once more.
“Elena, what happened?” He asked urgently.
“I-I don’t know,” she cried. “He...I was making hi-him dinner then he woke up and beg-began freaking out. I don’t know what to do Gil but I’m scared!”
“Alright, it’s okay Lena,” Gil attempted to soothe her. “I’m coming over there right now with Dani. Just hang in there, okay? Stay on the phone with me.” She could faintly hear the sound of a car starting, and she nodded.
“O-Okay.”
Gil and Dani made it there in seven minutes, probably disobeying several traffic signals as they did so. That didn’t matter to any of them though. Elena nearly jumped out of her skin when the front door burst open, but relief flooded her when Gil and Dani appeared in her sight.
“Gil, you get Elena out of here and take her to the station,” Dani instructed firmly. “I have more experience with this type of situation.” The man wanted to protest, but then his eyes landed on the very distraught Elena.
“Yeah, alright,” he breathed out, taking the girl’s arm and heading out while Dani ran to the bedroom. Gil ended up taking her to his house to calm her down. He offered her tea and one of his shirts as Elena’s had blood on it. After that, he stayed with her and talked her through everything that happened until she managed to finally calm down.
An hour later they got a call from Dani saying that she finally got Malcolm to calm down by dunking his head in water. She took Malcolm to the hospital to get stitches in his hand after he punched the mirror in his room and broke it and that’s where they were now (Elena figured that was why there were mirror shards on the floor when she walked in earlier). Since Malcolm was now sober, he told Dani why he freaked out. The drugs gave him hallucinations that made him see himself in his father’s clothes while his father stood beside him in the mirror. It freaked him out enough to go on a small rampage to try and get away from the sight.
Elena’s heart broke at Dani’s words. She couldn’t even begin to imagine what his mind had to go through while he was high. After another hour she asked Gil to take her home since she had calmed down completely. Though hesitant, he could never say no to her so he did as she asked.
“You sure you’ll be okay?” He asked nervously as the girl got out. She offered him a kind smile then nodded.
“I’ll call you if something else happens, but I predict that Malcolm will just go straight to sleep when he gets home. I want to clean everything up before that happens so he doesn’t hurt himself again,” she responded before closing the door. She waved at him one last time before heading inside. A deep sigh left her lips as she looked around. Nothing was out of place in the living room or kitchen save for what she had been cooking earlier, but she was afraid to even think about how the bedroom looked now.
Nevertheless, she got to work immediately. Now, because Elena is lazy at times, she started with the kitchen. She packed everything away then washed all the dishes before moving onto the bedroom. It took quite a bit of strength to move the dresser back to its place, but she finally got it there after almost ten minutes. She closed the window and made sure to lock it, trying not to think of the reason that it was open in the first place. After that, she moved all the pictures on the floor out to the living room in order to sweep. Once she finished sweeping, she moved back into the living room to assess the damage to the pictures. Thankfully, none of the pictures were ruined, but she definitely needed to buy some new frames.
Her eyes landed on a particular picture that was in a gold frame. It was a picture of her and Malcolm from the night that he proposed to her. The team plus Malcolm’s mother had gone out to a celebratory dinner for the occasion and Jessica managed to get them a table at the most luxurious restaurant had ever been to. Malcolm, of course, sat next to Elena and refused to let go of her hand the entire time. Dessert had just come, it was a piece of cake that had congratulations written on the plate with chocolate icing. That’s not what the couple was focused on though, instead they were talking with each other. Jessica managed to snap a picture right as Malcolm told Elena something funny, so the girl was laughing while he grinned cheekily at her. The memory made her smile, and she found herself staring at it. This was the reason that Malcolm hadn’t scared her off, they both love each other more than life itself and they cared so much about the other. That’s what kept her going.
She had been so focused on getting the pictures out of the broken frames that she hadn’t even heard someone walk in. Her gaze was glued to the picture in her hands, but she was forced to tear it away when she felt someone sit down beside her. She wasn’t surprised to see that it was her fiance.
“Hey,” he muttered with an awkward smile.
“Hey,” she whispered, not really knowing what else to say. She watched his eyes flicker down to the picture, and his shoulders slumped a bit.
“Dani told me what you hallucinated,” she informed him softly. “You don’t have to explain if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“I’m not worried about that,” he responded immediately. “I’m worried that I scared you off, and this is your goodbye to me.” He gestured to the picture. Elena’s eyes widened and she glanced at the picture before looking at him again.
“Malcolm, I’m not leaving you,” she said. “The picture frames were broken so I was taking them out. I would never do something like that, you know that. I’ve helped you through all sorts of violent nightmares, you really think that a drug induced hallucination is enough to get rid of me?” The man looked relieved by her words and he let out a breath neither of them were aware that he was holding.
“Well, Dani told me that I scared you to the point of you calling Gil for help,” he muttered, shrugging.
“I did,” she responded simply, which made him look down. “But there was a reason for that. Nightmares are easy to wake you up from, hallucinations from drugs is a completely different thing, one that I’m not used to dealing with. You need to be sober before the violence stops, and I needed help with that. But I’m not afraid of you because you are not your dad, no matter what your mind may force you to think.” Malcolm looked like he was ready to cry when she finished, and without warning pulled her into a hug. She wasn’t surprised, and instead returned the hug.
“I love you,” he muttered quietly.
“I love you too Malcolm,” she answered without hesitation, and she felt him grin against her shoulder before pulling away.
“You hungry? I can help you make dinner now,” he offered, which made her smile brightly and nod.
“Let’s do it,” she said, standing and heading to the kitchen. Malcolm watched her for a moment before following her happily.

Empath Part 1- Malcolm Bright x OC
Malcolm Bright x Elena Nadis
Description: Elena has a special ability that she successfully managed to hide from the rest of her team. That is, until today.
Word Count: 2.1k
It was during her college years that Elena found out about her "ability.” She had been taking a forensic class in order to test her ability to work in the field. Though the body was just a dummy, it was lifelike enough for her to practically stumble back as she examined the fake crime scene.
She barely had any evidence to go off of, yet she still managed to perfectly describe what happened to the body and the possible events leading up to the “death.” At first her professor thought she had cheated, that she somehow managed to get a peek at the answers while he wasn’t looking. However, upon questioning her, Elena’s professor concluded that she had the ability to empathize with the killer(s). That empathy manifests as the ability to assume the point of view of criminals and psychopaths so she can vividly construct the mentality and motives of such individuals, even with limited data.
That gave her quite the advantage during her courses, and she had even been offered a job at the Behavioral Analysis Unit at the FBI after graduating. As tempting as it was, Elena found that seeing such gory bodies affected her negatively, more than she would have liked. So, instead she just went to work for the NYPD, only to become a detective under Gil Arroyo. She never let him know about her special ability, fearing that he would take advantage of it, and instead preferred to look at the crime  scene after the body had been moved, and look at the body after it had been examined by Edrisa. The rest of the team, including Malcolm, thought that it was an odd way to work, but they said nothing. She got the job done either way so there was no real problem. It worked rather well until today.
Elena was still relatively new to the team, and she was only a secondary detective, so usually she was put on the backburner while the others examined the scene firsthand. Today however, they had no time to drop the girl off at the station so she was forced to come along with them. She (very hesitantly) walked in behind JT and began looking around the room, already beginning to form a theory.
“What do you guys think?” Gil questioned, though she didn’t really pay attention to it.
“Well, they’re a pretty well off family,” JT pointed out. “Maybe it was a theft gone wrong.” That already didn’t sound right to Elena, but she said nothing.
As Gil, Malcolm, Dani, JT and Edrisa formed a small circle to discuss possible motives, Elena crouched beside the body. Though initially hesitant, she had to be sure about her theory, so she finally pulled the sheet back to look at the dead woman. As soon as her eyes landed on the dead woman, a breathless gasp left her lips. She froze in place, clutching the sheet tightly. She could faintly hear Malcolm call her name worriedly, but she couldn’t pay attention as her eyes squeezed closed, her imagination beginning to paint a picture of the crime.
Evidence: No scratches or marks on the windowsills or doorway, so it wasn’t a forced entry.  The victim knew the killer enough to willingly let them in, or maybe she was threatened. No signs of struggle. She wasn’t threatened. Nothing was stolen and everything seemed to be in place. Theft was not the motive. No weapons were present aside from a stray 9 mm bullet on the floor. They expected no danger in the killer’s presence. Blood and a little brain matter splattered the wall adjacent to where the body was covered up. She was killed execution style with a bullet to the back of her head, a Sig P365 to be exact based on how small the bullet was.
In her mind, Elena stood, glancing around the scene, then walked towards the door. She stepped outside, closing the door behind her, only to turn around and knock on the door twice. It was dark outside, but she was suddenly lit up by someone turning on the porch light. She barely had to wait a minute before the door opened with the victim standing on the other side.
“Hello ____, what brings you here?” She questioned, leaning against the doorway with a polite smile. Elena copied her expression and shoved her hands in her jacket pockets, feeling the gun in her hand.
“Hey Jan, I was wondering if Mark was in,” she responded, attempting to sound hopeful. “I wanted to talk to him about some arrangements he made for the conference this weekend.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry ____. You just missed him, he had to go back to Long Branch to visit his sister for the weekend.” Elena feigned disappointment, which made Jan continue. “Would you like to come in for a drink before you head out? I know our home is a bit out of your way,” she offered. Elena smirked internally, but shot her a grateful smile.
“That would be wonderful, thank you,” she responded, stepping inside when Jan opened the door wider for her. She followed the woman to the living room and grasped the gun still inside her pocket. As she waited for Jan to fix her a glass of tea, she looked around the living room, making sure that no one else was in the house. She couldn’t afford witnesses.
“Here we are,” Jan said as she walked back in, handing the girl a glass. Elena thanked her, taking the glass with her free hand though she didn’t take a drink from it. Instead, she set it down as Jan took a seat in the arm chair that Elena assumed she had been in before. It faced away from the front door. Perfect.
“So, you said that Mark was visiting his sister? Is there an occasion?” She questioned casually as she strolled around the living room once more.
“Oh no, he just missed her. He’s always been a family man,” Jan responded absentmindedly before chuckling. “It’s funny, before he left, he kept asking me to go with him. He said he had a bad feeling about this weekend.” Elena chuckled fakely as she finally moved behind Jan’s chair.
“He was right.” Jan didn’t even have time to turn her head before Elena took out the gun and shot her in the back of the head, watching the blood splatter across the wall in front of her as the woman fell to the ground. She exhaled deeply then rolled her neck before shoving the gun back in her pocket, walking back to the front door. She locked the door as she stepped out then walked away without a second thought.
Elena was aggressively pulled out of her own imagination, and she found herself falling back. She nearly flinched when a pair of arms caught her and she looked around wildly, looking disoriented. Her hearing finally came back and Malcolm’s voice was the first one she heard.
“Lena, what happened?” He asked frantically, looking her over. Her mind was running a million miles a minute, the murder replaying in her head over and over.
“It wasn’t a theft,” she gasped out.
“What?” Gil questioned confusedly, crouching beside her as well.
“The motive wasn’t theft,” she repeated. “This was an attack against Mark, he’s the end goal.” The others looked between themselves unsurely.
“How do you know?” Dani asked curiously.
“There’s no malice shown against her,” she nodded towards the body. “Don’t you think that it’s odd that she was killed the weekend that Mark was visiting his sister out of town? And the kids are at summer camp for the next week, which means that Mark was meant to find her. She was just a casualty to get to him.” Her breathing was heavy by the time she finished, and Gil decided that it was enough.
“Alright Edrisa, since you’re just about done here you’re taking her back to the station, we’ll be there once we wrap up here and confirm Elena’s theory,” he instructed, standing up and resting his hands on his hips. The woman nodded and stood as well. JT opted to help Malcolm stand Elena up, then Edrisa took her hand. Malcolm could do nothing but watch as the girl was led out. He was fascinated by what he’d just witnessed. It’s not often that a woman, or anyone really, can scare him like that. He finally found his feet after a second and ran out to Edrisa’s car, where Elena was already in the passenger seat.
“Edrisa,” he called, pulling the woman off to the side. “Hey, you recognized Elena’s mannerisms which means you’ve seen them before. That means she’s done this before, do you know what it is?” He questioned hopefully. Edrisa smiled sympathetically.
“Sorry Malcolm, I’m afraid that’s something she has to be the one to tell you,” she responded, which made the man’s shoulders slump in defeat. “If it makes you feel better, I don’t think she has much of a choice now that everyone has seen it.” With that, she patted his arm then moved around the car and got into the driver’s seat. Malcolm watched the car drive off then sighed, beginning to head back inside.
To everyone’s surprise, Elena had gotten the profile right to a T. The killer wanted to get back at Mark for a deal gone bad a few years ago that landed him in jail. Luckily they were able to apprehend him and put him back behind bars by the end of the day. Elena was glad to just stick with helping Edrisa in the lab when need be, and once the others had made the arrest, she was ready to just go home. She was putting on her jacket when everyone walked into the station.
“Don’t think that you’re leaving yet,” JT laughed as they reached her. “You still gotta explain how you knew all that just by looking at the body. You were like a wizard.” Elena rolled her eyes at that.
“Don’t be so dramatic, JT,” she responded simply, pulling her hair out of her jacket. The man laughed and leaned against her desk.
“Seriously though,” he said. “What was all that?” The girl visibly hesitated. She knew that she would have to tell them eventually, she just never thought it would be so soon. Upon seeing the girl’s reluctance, Dani spoke.
“Elena, you really scared us this morning. If there’s anything we can do to help you, we want to know.” The girl finally sighed, then nodded.
“Alright, fine,” she said. “My professor said that I had the ability to empathize with the killer or killers. It can manifest as the ability to assume the point of view of criminals and psychopaths so I can reconstruct the mentality and motives of people like that, even with limited data.” The group looked surprised by her answer.
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Gil questioned. Elena looked down with a small shrug.
“I didn’t want you guys to think I was weird,” she muttered in response.
“Lena, you do realize we have a psychopath profiler on our team, I don’t think you can get much weirder than that,” JT chuckled. That seemed to cheer the girl up because she laughed with him.
“I guess so.”
“Hey,” Malcolm called, looking offended. That made the others join into the laughter.
“Elena, your ability doesn’t make us view you any differently,” Gil said once the laughter had settled. “You’re still a vital part of the team and you’ll be treated like one. If anyone doesn’t follow that, they can deal with me.” He shot a pointed look around his team, which made Elena smile and nod.
“Thanks guys, but I’m really tired now. You mind if I head out early?” She questioned hopefully, receiving a nod from her captain. The others wished her goodnight and she began heading out. It wasn’t until she was outside that she heard her name being called.
“Elena,” Malcolm called as he jogged out after her. She stopped and turned around just in time for him to reach her and stared at him confused.
“Hey,” he called breathlessly, which made her giggle.
“Hey,” she repeated, resting her hands in her pockets.
“Uh, would you want to get dinner right now? I know that Gil said if we treated you any differently we’d have to deal with him but-” Elena cut him off before he could begin rambling.
“I’d love to,” she responded with an earnest smile. “I know this really good Italian place just around the corner.” Malcolm looked relieved at her answer, and a charming smile appeared on his face.
“Well then, lead the way,” he instructed, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and allowing her to guide him to the restaurant.

Drunk on You- Malcolm Bright x OC
Malcolm Bright x Elena Nadis
Description: Elena gets a call at 2:00 a.m. about Malcolm at the station, drunk out of his mind. She’s angry for having to go get him, but the next day he explains his reason for wanting to forget.
Word Count: 1.8k
Elena awoke with a start to a loud noise that sounded through the apartment. Her eyes glanced around the room, searching for immediate danger before her eyes landed on her nightstand. Oh, her phone was ringing. A relieved sigh left her lips and she reached over, and picked up her phone. Gil was calling her. Why was he calling her at nearly 2:00 in the morning?
“Nadis,” she greeted simply, trying to remove the tiredness from her voice.
“Elena?” Gil’s voice came through, sounding exasperated. “Uh, hey. I’m sorry to wake you up so late,” he started, but she brushed it off, asking him what was wrong.
“Can you come down to the station?” His question confused her and she sat up. She paused when she realized that her boyfriend was no longer in bed beside her.
“Uh, yeah,” she answered distractedly as she pushed the covers aside and stood. “Let me just find Malcolm real quick.”
“That’s actually why we need you here,” the man stated. Elena could hear a commotion in the background, it sounded like Dani talking to someone slowly.
“He’s there?” She asked incredulously, pulling on her shoes.
“Yeah. I think he’s been drinking.” Gil sounded hesitant, almost as if he didn’t want to be the one to tell her. Elena sighed softly and shook her head, standing up.
“Alright. I’ll see you in a bit.” The man returned her regards then hung up. She slipped on a jacket and grabbed her keys, heading out.
The entire ride to the station, Elena was thinking of what to say to Malcolm. She was annoyed if she was being honest. Her boyfriend had been having more nightmares lately, but he refused to acknowledge it when she brought it up, even refusing to wake her up once he’s awake. Instead he went through unhealthy coping mechanisms such as drinking, not sleeping, and drinking at least three times more than he already does. But getting wasted and going to the station for god knows what? That was too far.
She arrived at the station in a little less than ten minutes and she got out, heading inside. It was pretty much empty, but it didn’t really surprise Elena considering it was 2:00 in the morning. That made it easier for her to find her boyfriend and friends in one of the conference rooms near Gil’s office. The man himself was by the window of the room talking to Dani in hushed voices while Malcolm looked to be asleep with his head resting on the table. She walked inside quietly, alerting Gil and Dani of her presence by closing the door.
“Hey,” she greeted with an apologetic smile. “Thanks for taking care of him until I got here.” They offered her a smile simultaneously then Dani glanced at the still asleep man.
“I’m just glad that Gil and I were here when Edrisa found him,” she responded, which confused Elena. “She had been walking out when Malcolm walked inside. We were finishing up a report of our last case but Edrisa had a date with that Jim guy from the coffee place down the street. We offered to take care of him so she could go.” Now Elena felt worse. And angrier.
“I’m sorry you guys,” she sighed softly, crossing her arms. Gil shook his head with a patient smile.
“Don’t worry about it,” he responded simply. “Do you want me to get him to your car?” The girl shook her head.
“No, I’ll make him walk. You guys get home.” Her friends looked hesitant, but Elena waved them off, so they finally left. Now left alone, Elena took a deep breath then walked over to her boyfriend, shaking his shoulder gently.
“Mal, time to get up,” she called softly. The man grumbled and shifted in his seat, but didn’t wake up. She’d need to resort to more drastic measures. So, she moved behind him then ripped the back of his chair, yanking it towards her aggressively. The force made him fall to the ground which successfully woke him up. He groaned loudly, squinting his eyes in the bright (to him) lights of the conference room to see his girlfriend. He grinned lazily and leaned back on his hands.
“Hey babe, what’re you doing here?” He asked idly before glancing around. “What time is it?” Elena moved the chair back to its place before crossing her arms.
“It’s 2:30 a.m. Gil asked me to come pick you up,” she responded. “Now come on. Let’s go home.” The man sobered up at the lack of humor in her tone and he nodded, beginning to stand. Elena didn’t wait for him before beginning to walk out to her car. She heard his unusually heavy footsteps behind her and she opened the passenger door for him before climbing into the driver’s seat and starting the car. The ride home was silent until Malcolm finally gathered the courage to look at her.
“Are you mad at me?” He asked softly, receiving no response from the woman beside him. “Right, I guess that was a stupid question. Your knuckles are white from gripping the wheel and you’ve been biting your lip.”
“I’m really not in the mood to be profiled by you Malcolm,” she finally responded, the snappiness in her tone letting him know that she wasn’t messing around. That’s how he knew he messed up. Usually she at least played along with his profiles with a witty comeback, the only time she didn’t was when she was mad.
When they arrived home, Elena had to help him upstairs to make sure he didn’t fall backwards. She then helped him get back into his pajamas then covered him up once he was in bed. Malcolm became confused when she began restraining his wrists.
“Babe, you know I don’t need these when you’re with me,” he stated, confused. Elena spared him a single glance as she finished tying his wrists up.
“I really don’t think I can sleep with you tonight Mal. These are just a precaution.” She could feel his eyes on her back as she walked into the kitchen, grabbing some painkillers and a glass of water for his inevitable hangover in the morning. After setting the pills and glass on his nightstand, she offered him a weak smile then kissed his forehead.
“Goodnight Malcolm,” she whispered before turning off the lamp and beginning to walk out. She paused in the doorway when he spoke.
“I love you Lena,” he called softly, shifting so he could get comfortable.
“I love you too,” she responded after a moment before heading to the living room, turning off any lights left on as she did so. She grabbed a blanket and pillow then laid on the couch, falling asleep not long after.
Elena woke up the next morning to the sunlight hitting her face, warming it up from the usually cold apartment. She began to move, but paused when she realized that something was holding her. Or rather, someone. She internally freaked out until she looked at the arms encasing her. It was just Malcolm. Her head turned just a bit to look back at him, only to see him already looking at her.
“Morning,” he muttered softly.
“Good morning,” she responded in the same tone before laying her head back down. They stayed in a comfortable silence before Malcolm leaned over and pressed a sweet kiss to the side of her head.
“I made breakfast,” he muttered against her temple. “Are you hungry?” Elena nodded then carefully unwrapped his arms from around her and stood. Malcolm followed suit then led her to the kitchen. There were crepes filled with all sorts of fillings on the counter, her favorite. She knew that this was the beginning of his apology, but she didn’t say anything as she sat on one of the stools, resting her elbows on the counter. Her boyfriend walked around to the other side of the counter and slid the plates that had honey butter crepes as well as a cup of coffee to her. For a few minutes they ate in silence, but once again, Malcolm was the one to break it.
“I’m ready to talk about my nightmare,” he said without a hint of hesitance in his tone. Elena’s eyes widened and she gazed at him, shocked.
“Malcolm if this is just you trying to apologize, you don’t have-”
“It’s not an apology,” the man interrupted her. “Well, it sort of is. But I have more for my apology. I just think I’m ready to talk about it.” Elena nodded slowly, then gestured for him to continue. She watched him take a deep breath then lean against the counter.
“It’s about Dr. Whitly,” he started slowly. “Kind of. It’s the same dream every single time and it’s getting worse and worse the more I have it. In the dream I’m standing beside him in the exact same uniform at Claremont, but we’re not there. We’re here, at home. He takes me to our room and you’re there, sleeping like usual. It turns back for a second but when my eyes open, you’re dead, and it’s my fault,” he exhales shakily. “Every time I wake up and see you asleep, I have a horrifying minute of questioning whether you were alive or not until you move or snore. It makes me afraid Elena, and I don’t like being afraid. I don’t want to wake up one day and realize that my nightmare became a reality or you leave me because of an incident.” Elena stared at him in shock as she processed his words.
“Okay,” she started slowly. “Well, first of all I do not snore,” she half joked, which caused Malcolm to grin and the mood to lighten a bit. “And I’m not going to leave you because of your nightmares Mal. You’ve told me what to do in case something happened many times, and I’ve used that advice every single time that you need to be woken up.” She hopped down from her seat then walked over to him. He finally looked at her when she turned him to face her and cupped his cheeks, staring into his eyes.
“Malcolm Bright, you are not your father and I am not afraid of you or what you’re capable of. Martin Whitly is a manipulative serial killer. You, Malcolm Bright, are an excellent profiler that puts scum like them behind bars. You’re so much better than him and I believe that 100%.” Malcolm couldn’t help but tear up as he leaned into her touch. His head lowered enough for their foreheads to meet and he sniffled.
“I think it’s time to give Dr. Le Deux another call,” she mumbled after a minute of just being in each other’s arms.
“Not right now,” he whispered in response. “I just want to stay with you. Just for a little bit longer.” Elena offered him a small smile then pressed a quick kiss to his lips.
“I’m not leaving you anytime soon, or ever for that matter,” she reassured him. He nodded slowly then led her back to the living room, where they spent the entire day doing nothing but being with each other.

Memorable Affairs- Malcolm Bright x OC
Malcolm Bright x Elena Nadis
Description: Goes through the years of Malcolm and Elena’s relationship.
Word Count: 3.1k
1.
“What do we have?” Gil questioned as he walked into the victim’s room, Malcolm in tow. Edrisa, Dani and JT were already there inspecting the room, but faced him upon hearing his voice. Dani gestured to the body she and Edrisa were examining as she stood.
“Felicia Norris, 28. Looks like our same guy,” she started. “Head trauma, ligature marks on the wrists and ankles, carvings on the stomach and legs with what looks like a serrated knife. The blood’s been drained from her body.”
“The killer got in through the back door,” JT continued, glancing at the kitchen. Malcolm tuned out the rest of the conversation and pulled on a pair of gloves before crouching to inspect the body
“Guys,” a voice called from the kitchen, making everyone look in that direction. A girl that Malcolm didn’t recognize walked to the doorway from the kitchen holding something. She looked disturbed as she stared at the object. After taking a second to examine it, Malcolm realized that it was a ladle with  something wet in it.
“Elena?” Gil questioned, looking concerned. She looked around at everyone as the mysterious substance dripped to the floor.
“I think the killer is drinking the victim’s blood,” she finally finished.
Elena was both happy and disgusted that she had been right. She was happy because it led them to the killer which in turn led to an arrest. But she was disgusted because she had to be the one to make the discovery. Nevertheless, the case was closed and she was ready to go home. She had actually been getting ready to do that when someone tapped on her shoulder. She nearly jumped out of her skin at the sudden contact and whipped around.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you,” Malcolm spoke, holding his hands up in surrender. She sighed in relief then laughed softly.
“Sorry, I’m just a little tired,” she explained, though he brushed it off.
“Just wanted to congratulate you for making the connection and helping us solve the case,” he continued, resting his hands in his jacket pockets. Elena shrugged as she slipped her jacket on.
“Well, it is my job,” she responded simply. Malcolm’s brows furrowed.
“I’m a secondary detective,” she spoke, holding out her hand. “Elena Nadis.” Malcolm felt stupid, and that didn’t happen often. He’s heard the rest of the team talk about Elena, but he never took the time to meet her or even acknowledge her.
“You’re Malcolm Bright, right?” She continued when he didn’t shake her hand at first. That snapped him out of his thoughts and he nodded, shaking her hand.
“Yeah, nice to meet you detective Nadis.”
“Call me Elena,” she responded simply. “I hate to cut this conversation short, but I’m pretty tired and I’d like to get an Uber before the creeps come out.”
“I could give you a ride,” he offered immediately. Elena looked hesitant, but nodded after an internal debate.
“That’d be great. Thanks, Bright.”
“Call me Malcolm,” he responded coolly as he led her out.
2. Asking Her Out/First Date
Ever since they officially met, Malcolm and Elena found themselves seeking each other out during cases. They had gotten significantly closer, bouncing off theories on each other and adding on when needed. The chemistry was there, and everyone could see it. It was just a matter of when they would make the first mood. It had been too long for Dani’s tastes. That became apparent when, after a case, she walked into the conference room where everyone sat. As usual, Malcolm and Evelyn were talking as they began packing their stuff up.
“Hey Evie,” she called, catching the girl’s attention immediately. “Are you free this Saturday?” Evelyn looked confused, but nodded after a minute.
“I think so, unless there’s a case.” Dani pursed her lips then looked at Malcolm.
“What about you, Bright?” Malcolm also said he didn’t have plans, to which Dani nodded.
“Good, well I’m not. Have a good time this weekend,” she stated before walking out without looking back. The duo watched her, shock written on both their faces.
“Did she just ask you out for me?” Malcolm questioned, not looking away from the door. A smile formed on Elena’s face and she nodded.
“Yep,” she responded, looking at him. “But I’m not complaining. Pick me up at 7:00.” She pressed a kiss to his cheek before grabbing her bag and following the girl.
“Dress nice!” He called in response, a comically wide smile on his face.
After pulling a few strings (and hesitantly telling his mother that he had a date), Malcolm managed to get a table in one of the nicest restaurants in town. He informed Elena where they would be going in advance in case she needed time to pick out a suitable outfit (though she thought that she would look great no matter what). He ended up being a bit late. Not much, just ten minutes. Elena nearly sighed in relief when she heard the knock on her door.
“I thought you forgot about me,” she half joked after answering the door. Malcolm had to stop himself from pulling a Joker smile as he looked at her attire.
“I could never,” he responded, holding up his hand to reveal a bouquet of red roses. “I didn’t know what kind you preferred, that’s what took so long. I’m sorry.” Elena blushed profusely at the flowers and gingerly took them, a shy smile gracing her face.
“You’re forgiven,” she responded before setting them aside. “Are you ready?”
“I was born ready,” he responded without hesitation, leading her out to his car.
Dinner had been going great. Like usual, they made easy conversation and cracked jokes in between. Usually, one would be nervous on a date no matter who it was with. But Malcolm and Elena didn’t feel that. Neither of them were anxious, which was funny considering they both had massive anxiety. That didn’t matter tonight, tonight it was just about them. They weren’t even officially a couple yet they were already in the honeymoon phase.
Of course, all good things must come to an end. Their date was suddenly interrupted when both of their phones started to ring. The two apologized in unison, shared a laugh, then answered their respective phones.
“Elena,” Dani started, already sounding apologetic. “I’m so sorry to interrupt your date, but we have a new case. Gil wants you and Malcolm here ASAP.” Elena sighed internally. She knew that crime never stopped, but she wished that she could have one night away from it. Nevertheless, she said a quick goodbye to her friend before facing Malcolm, who was already off his phone with an apologetic smile.
“We have a case,” they spoke in unison, sharing a laugh once more.
“Well, I guess we better get going,” Elena said once their laughter died down. Malcolm nodded and quickly paid for their meal before standing. The girl took his hand upon him holding it out and they began walking to the door.
“Don’t think that this is our last date,” he muttered into her ear, walking closely behind her and wrapping an arm around her middle. The gesture made her grin.
“I was hoping you’d say that,” she responded as they reached his car.
“I wonder how everyone will feel knowing the hottest detective is arriving on the scene,” he added as he opened the passenger door for her. Elena blushed and smirked.
“Funny, I was just about to say the same about you.” She pressed a quick kiss to his cheek before climbing in. Malcolm copied her smirk while he closed the door then ran to the other side of the car to get in. Their first date was unconventional at best, but there were many more after it. So was it really that unconventional?
3. First Kiss
They often say that Christmas was the most wonderful time of the year. Elena couldn’t help but agree, especially with Malcolm there. It was their first Christmas together and she couldn’t be more excited to give him his gift. She had no idea how, but she managed to get him an original copy of “Invisible Man” by Ralph Ellison in mint condition. But for now, it was time to celebrate Christmas Eve.
She invited Malcolm to hang out at her house, watch a few movies and even help her bake/decorate cookies. The entire house smelled like cookies, cinnamon and peppermint. Malcolm couldn’t help but grin at it, knowing she spent a lot of time making sure her house was in the Christmas spirit. They were having an absolute blast watching and debating the practicality of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” while the cookies baked. Elena nearly jumped for joy when she heard the oven beep.
“They’re done!” She squealed, interrupting Malcolm’s speech about how it was unrealistic for the concept of Santa Claus to exist on a tiny snowflake. She paused the movie then turned on the Christmas music she had cued up on her speaker and ran to the kitchen. Carefully, she used the potholders to take the large tray of perfectly baked cookies out of the oven. She used a spatula to set them on a plate then looked at her boyfriend, who stood in the doorway watching her with a fond smile.
“Come on lover-boy,” she called excitedly, running over to him and taking his hands. “Help me color the frostings.” When she began pulling him towards her, she was surprised to find him resisting her. She shot him a confused look, but before she could say anything, he pointed up. Her gaze followed his finger and she blushed upon realizing that there was a mistletoe hanging in the doorway. She almost forgot that she’d hung any mistletoe up.
“Well, we can’t break tradition,” he stated, watching her with an amused look. “I know you love Christmas traditions.” Elena giggled, knowing that he wasn’t wrong.
“You’re right about that,” she responded, stepping closer to him. His amused smile turned into an affectionate one and, slowly, he began leaning in. She leaned in as well and met him halfway in a kiss. Her body moved to lean against the doorway and he moved with her, towering over her in their new position. When they finally pulled away, they were all smiles.
“This is my favorite tradition,” he whispered, eyes flickering to her lips again. Elena’s arms wrapped around his neck and she nodded.
“Mine too,” she muttered before leaning in once more.
 4. First Anniversary
This wasn’t Elena’s first relationship. She knew that sometimes plans had to change, especially when it’s two detectives who always seemed to have a huge workload. That’s why she couldn’t find it in herself to be mad when Gil informed her a few days ago that he needed Malcolm’s help for a stakeout at a suspect’s townhouse in order to gather evidence and hopefully make an arrest. Of course she was a bit disappointed, who wouldn’t be sad when their one year anniversary was ruined by work? But she felt it was best to just try to move on and celebrate another night.
Throughout the night, Malcolm made her feel better by periodically sending her a text saying that he missed her or telling her a joke. It made her smile, but it wasn’t the same as him being there. He was well aware of that too. That’s why he continually apologized for his absence, despite Elena reassuring him that it was okay multiple times. She ended up spending the night binge watching Hannibal (as one does) and eating whatever was in the house.
At around 11:00, she decided to call it a night. There was no point in waiting up for him because they didn’t know how long the stakeout would last. So, she cleaned up the kitchen and living room before making her way to her room. She opened her phone as she reached her bedroom door, but just as she was about to send a goodnight text to Malcolm, she heard a knock on her front door. Her brows  furrowed in confusion, and she made sure that she had a weapon within arm’s reach before opening the door.
“Happy anniversary,” Malcolm greeted with a bright smile, holding up a large brown paper bag and some red roses. “I got Indian food.” Elena was overjoyed by the man’s presence, but she contained herself until they were inside and the bag was set down. She threw her arm around him and laughed.
“Did you get the guy?” She inquired excitedly. Malcolm couldn’t help but laugh at her enthusiasm and nodded.
“Caught him red handed,” he responded. “But I’m not here to talk about work. I’m here to celebrate my one year anniversary with my amazing girlfriend and eat Indian food.” He pulled away and began rummaging through the bag while Elena watched with an affectionate look.
They spent the rest of the night watching Hannibal. Originally, they were just continuing from the episode she was on, but Malcolm wouldn’t stop asking questions about the events prior to that episode. Finally, Elena just decided to start the show over so that he could catch up. They ended up falling asleep on the couch, wrapped in each other’s arms.
5. Moving In
There wasn't really a discussion about them living together. One night, Elena just started sleeping over there and never really left. They’d been together for three years so they were used to each other. Eventually one day Malcolm asked her what the point of her paying rent was if she was just to spend all her time at his place. They just sort of just came to the conclusion that she would break the lease and sell what she didn’t need (furniture, kitchen things, etc).
With Elena around, it truly felt like home to Malcolm. Before she was there, his apartment just felt like a house, nothing more to it aside from some furniture and his bird sunshine. He remembered the first time she spent the night at his place. That was the first night he hadn’t had a nightmare since he had seen the girl in the box. There was just a calming presence to her that kept the nightmares at bay. That’s what pushed him to talk to her about how much time she spent at his house.
Elena couldn’t have been more excited when her stuff was unpacked. Now her knick knacks sat on the shelves beside his. Pictures of them together hung on the walls around his art pieces and her clothes were hanging in their closet. After spending all day cleaning up the apartment after unpacking Malccolm walked into the kitchen to see Elena cooking. She already knew where everything was, so she had no trouble beginning to make tacos for them.
“Hey, are you hungry?” She asked upon noticing his presence. He offered her a cheeky grin and nodded, wrapping his arms around her from behind.
“Starving.”
“Well I hope you don’t mind tacos then,” she stated, turning back to the stove. “It’s been a long day but I wasn’t in the mood for takeout or fast food. This was the easiest thing to make.”
“I could have made dinner,” he pointed out.
“Yeah, but did you want to?” She shot him a pointed look. Malcolm couldn’t help but chuckle and shake his head.
“Fair enough. Thanks for cooking,” he responded, kissing her cheek.
“Of course. Now go set the table my love,” she instructed, nudging him away. He jokingly saluted then walked out, leaving her to giggle after him.
6. Proposal
It had been the most difficult case anyone on the team had been a part of. The killer was able to kill thirteen people before he was caught. They’d only just managed to get to him before he could kill his next target. Even then, it was almost too late and the victim had to be hospitalized, but they were going to be okay. Gil stated that that was a cause for celebration, but everyone was too tired to go out for dinner and drinks. So, Elena suggested that she just gets takeout and wine for everyone.
The celebration was the best stress relief after such a gruelling case. Everyone was talking and laughs were shared as they ate. Several times, someone from the team would congratulate Elena for being the one to solve the case by figuring out the motive. Malcolm’s arm went around her as everyone stood to toast to another successful case.
“To Elena,” Dani spoke with a small smile, lifting her drink.
“To the team,” Elena corrected, also lifting her drink. Everyone else followed in suit, but Malcolm’s eyes stayed on his girlfriend as everyone took a drink after clinking their glasses together.
“Marry me,” he said suddenly, surprising everyone in the room. Elena nearly choked on her drink and stared at him with wide eyes as Edrisa’s mouth dropped open.
“What?” She questioned, shocked. Malcolm’s eyes widened when he realized what he said, but Gil interrupted him before he could say anything.
“Boy, I know you can do better than that. Get on one damn knee and do it properly,” he instructed firmly, resting his hands on his hips. The couple looked at him, but while Elena’s mind was still reeling about what was happening, Malcolm nodded quickly then began digging through his bag. Elena faced him and her hands covered her mouth when he pulled out a small box. Any words that she could think of died in her throat as she watched him get down on one knee and open the box.
“Will you marry me, Elena?” He asked nervously. He didn’t have a long convoluted speech planned nor did he want to have one, he knew that Elena didn’t care about those. At least he hoped. His hopes were not in vain because she found herself nodding excitedly.
“Yes!” She cried out, wrapping her arms around him tightly. Their friends cheered enthusiastically as Malcolm stood and slid the ring onto her finger. She pulled him into a kiss immediately afterward, only for them to pull away when JT wolf whistled at them.
“Congratulations you guys,” Gil spoke with a smile, pulling them into a hug. The rest of the team joined in and Malcolm couldn’t help but tear up as he looked around. He hadn’t felt so happy in a long time, and he never wanted to not feel this way again. He knew that he would feel that as long as Elena was by his side.
