#OTD in 1920 – Rineen Ambush | Six RIC men were killed by the IRA in an ambush in Rineen, Co Clare.
One of the most memorable encounters of the War of Independence took place at Dromin Hill, Rineen on this date. The purpose of this act was to get revenge for the murder of Martin Devitt, an Irish soldier who was shot dead in an ambush in February of that year in the locality. A secondary function was to get arms for the poorly equipped volunteers in the area. Men from several battalions took…

"Pouliot in Objections," Brantford Expositor. December 1, 1942. Page 4. ---- Resents Publicity for Open Court-Martial at Quebec --- LA MALBAIE, Que., Dec. 1 - (CP) - Jean Francois Pouliot, Liberal member of Parliament for Temiscouata, protested at a by-election meeting here Saturday night to "publicity" given to a general court-martial trying nine army men at Quebec on charges arising from irregularities in medical examinations. Speaking in support of Frederick Dorion, Quebec lawyer elected as an Independent in Monday's Charlevoix-Saguenay Federal byelection Mr. Pouliot said: "I denounce with all my strength the publicity given these trials. We do not act like that in the other provinces, where sittings of the court martial are held in camera. "I blame the Ralston (Defense Minister Ralston) who permitted the overflowing of that dirty water over the Province of Quebec .... to French-Canadians." (At a press conference preceding the court-martial, Brig. Georges P .Vanier, Officer Commanding M.D. 5 at Quebec, told newsmen: "The public seems to be of the opinion that an open court-martial is some- thing extraordinary. We want to correct the opinion that we want to publicize this case. In most other open court-martials here the public was not interested.")

The ruined church of Moy was also known as Teampul-Inis-Dia (‘the church of the island of God’), though why it was given this name is not known. Yet it stands now like an island in a sea of grassland, visible from a country road between Lahinch and Milltown Malbay.

My Relationship with Nature
Nature has always been a constant throughout my life. I grew up in a rural village in the southeast of England where I could access the natural world by simply stepping out of my front door.  I realize now how privileged I was to have this direct, instant access to nature from such a young age; nothing demonstrated this to me more than when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the UK. Daily dog walks in the surrounding countryside with my family became a vital means of escaping the isolation of the national lockdown and seeking stability in a national and global period of uncertainty. During this time, my mum was diagnosed with a serious illness too; I reflect now how nature became and continues to be a huge source of support and comfort for her, myself and our family.

I also have a strong sense of place and connection to the sea and oceans. Living near the coast for most of my life, I would regularly walk, swim or eat fish and chips at our local beaches with my friends and family. Even when I moved to a city in the east of England to attend university, the Norfolk coast was only a short train journey away. Some of my fondest memories are of visiting Horsey beach, where hundreds of seals settle for the winter months to raise their cubs.  It was a really special moment to get so close to these animals and a perfect place to escape the stress and pressures of my studies. Indeed, whenever I feel stressed or overwhelmed, nature is my refuge.

My love for nature was actually at the core of my motivation to study in Canada for my exchange year. Experiencing the vibrant colours of the fall season and witnessing beautiful snow-covered landscapes within and beyond Guelph in the winter is something I will always remember.

Nature supports us in so many ways. I reflect on how vital it is for my own physical, mental and spiritual well-being. This is why I feel such an immense sense of responsibility to protect it, not only for what it provides us as humans but also for its intrinsic value and right to exist on this planet. I feel that in the modern world, the connection between nature and human existence has been severed; ultimately, we are all part of nature and our lives are inextricably interconnected with it. I believe that we must rediscover our place in nature in order to collectively recognize the importance of stopping and reversing the damage we have inflicted upon the natural world.
We all have different relationships with nature, but I feel it is nature that ties us all together. I wonder if any of you feel the same?

My Relationship With Nature
Nature has always been a constant in my life and a source of comfort for me since I was a child. I grew up in a rural village near the south east coast of England, where I was able to access nature by simply stepping outside of my front door. Family holidays would often involve staying in a small rural cottage and walking, hiking and generally exploring other areas of the British countryside.
Reflecting back on this now, I realise just how privileged I was to have had this close and easy access to the natural world. Nothing made me appreciate this more than when the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, during which daily dog walks with my family helped to keep me going in the overwhelmingly uncertain times we were living in. I feel a very strong sense of place and attachment to the surrounding landscapes of my family home, where we would escape the confinement and social isolation of the national lockdown and embrace the sense of calm created by our natural surroundings.

During this time period, my mum was diagnosed with a serious health condition. I reflect now on the immense support that nature was and continues to be for the wellbeing of her, myself and our family; daily walks in the surrounding fields and our local woodland forest gave us all comfort and a sense of stability. I recognise how important having access to nature was and still is for my own and my family's physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
I also feel a strong sense of place in connection to the sea. Living most of my life in close proximity to coastal areas, I would frequently enjoy walking, swimming and eating locally caught fish and chips on the beach with friends and family. Even when I went to university and began living in Norwich, a city in the east of England, I took a train to the Norfolk coast on a regular basis. One of the most special moments here that I experienced during my second year of university was a trip to Horsey beach, where hundreds of seals reside for the winter months. I had never seen so many and been so close to these animals before and watching mother seals care for their newborn cubs was really special and moving to witness.

Nature supports us all in so many ways- that's why I feel such a sense of responsibility to ensure its protection in the face of human over-exploitation. The commodification of nature in contemporary capitalist society has severed and isolated the natural world from our human existence. I feel that many of us must rediscover our connection and place within nature in order to collectively recognise the imperative to stop and reverse the damage we have inflicted upon it. We may all have different relationships with nature, but I believe it is nature that ties us all together.

Hal and Jule – The story my grandfather use to tell of meeting his duet partner always ended with his chuckled remembrance that his brothers and friends warned him not to fall for Jule O’Brien. “All you’ll do is carry her sheet music,” they would say. The first verse tells of a job that Jule and her sister Kitty had, playing and singing at the Boston Store on State Street in Chicago’s Loop. They were selling sheet music in the days before radio. As it turned out, Bomp had a good singing voice as well and was a natural entertainer, and they did so for most of their life together. Although they sang in bars and resorts in Chicago, Indiana, and southern Wisconsin, their lucky grandchildren felt their best performances were in a tiny cottage in northern Illinois. What memories …
The magnificent whistle in this song (a nod to the beautiful whistle my grandmother had) is provided by my dear friend Dave Beutel. Amazingly enough, his grandmother, like mine, was named Julia O’Brien. Even more remarkable, his Julia was born in Miltown Malbay, in County Clare, the same tiny Irish town as our Moroney clan. While Dave and I cannot find a common ancestor, we are sure, given our similar world view and his musical inclinations, we must be cousins in some form or fashion.

#OTD in 1973 – Death of piper and folklorist, Willie Clancy.
Clancy was born into a musical family in the outskirts of Miltown Malbay, Co Clare. His parents, Gilbert Clancy and Ellen Killeen, both sang and played concertina, and his father also played the flute. Clancy’s father had been heavily influenced by local blind piper Garret Barry and passed much of Barry’s music on to Willie. Willie started playing the whistle at age 5, and later took up the…

By Bernadette A Sahm Today we celebrate the first day of Spring. Spring is always about new beginnings, hope, light, life and more. For us this day a is a day of moving forward and moving in a new direction. Today we said, “Bye bye to Malbay Drive.” After 32 years today is the day that we turned over possession of a home we loved and raised our family in, we hope the new owners enjoy it as much…
