Yet their relationship gets pushed even further when Jasmal admits that she doesn't follow Silvanius...or even Mielikki...but Malar, nature god of hunters, stalkers, and bloodshed. I’ve gone through Demihuman Deities a lot so I don’t know how I’ve missed / kept missing this! It’s a pretty cool piece of art honestly. I like it a lot, especially the fact that Rillifane looks like a TREE (plus this artisitc rendition is kind of giving me Tin Man vibes with how he looks) :D

Lolth’s ex kind of has style. Although I have no idea what’s going on with Corellon’s neck. Is it a brace? turtle neck? One of those medieval times styled neck ruffles? Who knows! Not me~

i guess this is a hot take but i really do think 'grooming' is the least interesting way to think about gale and mystra, though I can see why in-character, gale and others might articulate it that way for lack of a better comparison.

but while mystra's line to gale about how he was her lover but understands her so little is, you know, kind of savage in the circumstances, i think it's also true, and something even she only fully realised after gale found the orb. gale is having a lot of messy human emotions in response to a break-up, and he ascribes those kinds of feelings to mystra, too: that having him detonate the orb is a petty punishment, that she feels threatened by him, that if he tries hard enough he can get her attention again. i'm not sure to what extent he ever fully accepts on-screen (except possibly at the very end of his non-god romance) that mystra is an entity with a personality and passions and preferences, yes, but who is fundamentally without human-scale emotions.

i think that mystra didn't realise how little gale understood her, not in the sense of 'my boyfriend got me a terrible gift, doesn't he know me,' but in that gale clearly does not understand that they are, on a cosmic level, not equal, and cannot be. and I think she in turn doesn't understand how devastating it is for a human to be drawn so close to a god, to exist in a space that is not meant for them, and to love someone who is incapable of giving human love back. i don't think she can be said to have 'groomed' gale in part because that implies an agenda of abuse she simply didn't have: i don't think it ever occurred to her that their relationship could or would be traumatic for gale, because that is not the scale on which she experiences the world.

i keep thinking about the lines from the book about kelemvor that you can find: 'As a mortal man he was a mercenary with a paladin's stoic beliefs hidden under a crust of scowls and grumbles. As Lord of Death, he was forced to mellow both aspects of himself, for the impulses of a man and a god are not consummate. Mortals are allowed caprice, but immortality wears that stone smooth quickly'.

if mystra were as petty, emotional, and vindictive as gale sometimes convinces himself that she is, then he'd have a real problem, because she literally is the weave-- he can't do magic without her, without connecting to her. i do think she feels more for and about gale than she knows she should, but she also can and does step outside of that, and view and experience things from the cosmic perspective of a god who cannot ruin one mortal's life because he betrayed her.

but also, she doesn't need to have intended to harm gale to have done so, and she doesn't need to have 'groomed' him for him to be traumatised by having his mentor (who is also his goddess) become his lover (who is, again, a goddess).

Baelfire is my backup character for my friend's World of Gods homebrew campaign, where all our characters are demigod children of gods from across time and space. He's a half-elf order of the lycan bloodhunter, and the child of Malar, god of "hunting, stalking, bloodlust, and bestial savagery". Still ironing out the details of his backstory, but I'll share what I've got so far underneath the cut

I kinda think that his mother grew up in a cult of Malar, and when she was a young woman she was kinda... offered up as a sacrifice of sorts? She ended up getting pregnant, and although by this point she was actively trying to get out of the cultist life, she was kept there forcefully. They didn't treat her particularly well, she was just another of Malar's conquests as far as they were concerned, but her son was hailed almost as an avatar of Malar. He was taught brutality, constantly tested to prove that he was strong enough to survive, that he truly was the manifestation of the violent and destructive wilds. Sometime in his late childhood he was ritualistically inflicted with lycanthropy (as Malar, to the best of my knowledge, is associated with lycanthropes), and his teen years were spent being forced to hone his more violent abilities and tendencies and what have you.

Just before his 18th birthday the cult compound was invaded by some sort of noble, perhaps holy order, maybe a group of paladins? They had been tipped off about a group of Malarites who were abducting local citizens and causing grievous harm to nearby cities and towns, and they came to put a stop to it. The cultists disbanded, and Baelfire was taken in by the paladins and dropped off in another town, maybe in some sort of foster family or orphanage since he wasn't quite an adult yet? Or maybe at a church or temple to heal him? Either way, he doesn't stay long, having vowed vengeance on the cultists and ultimately running away to finish the job the noble paladins had started. I'm unsure as of rn whether or not his mother survives, part of me thinks it'd be really fun for her to get out and for him to seek her out as an adult only to find out she wants nothing to do with him, and the other part of me thinks it'd be fun for the cultists to have forced him to kill her as some sort of twisted "coming of age" ritual.
