An Introduction
I don't know politics but I know the names Of those in power, and can repeat them like Days of week, or names of months, beginning with Nehru. I am Indian, very brown, born in Malabar, I speak three languages, write in Two, dream in one. Don't write in English, they said, English is not your mother-tongue. Why not leave Me alone, critics, friends, visiting cousins, Every one of you? Why not let me speak in Any language I like? The language I speak, Becomes mine, its distortions, its queernesses All mine, mine alone. It is half English, half Indian, funny perhaps, but it is honest, It is as human as I am human, don't You see? It voices my joys, my longings, my Hopes, and it is useful to me as cawing Is to crows or roaring to the lions, it Is human speech, the speech of the mind that is Here and not there, a mind that sees and hears and Is aware. Not the deaf, blind speech Of trees in storm or of monsoon clouds or of rain or the Incoherent mutterings of the blazing Funeral pyre. I was child, and later they Told me I grew, for I became tall, my limbs Swelled and one or two places sprouted hair. When I asked for love, not knowing what else to ask For, he drew a youth of sixteen into the Bedroom and closed the door, He did not beat me But my sad woman-body felt so beaten. The weight of my breasts and womb crushed me. I shrank Pitifully. Then… I wore a shirt and my Brother's trousers, cut my hair short and ignored My womanliness. Dress in sarees, be girl, Be wife, they said. Be embroiderer, be cook, Be a quarreller with servants. Fit in. Oh, Belong, cried the categorizers. Don't sit On walls or peep in through our lace-draped windows.
Be Amy, or be Kamala. Or, better Still, be Madhavikutty. It is time to Choose a name, a role. Don't play pretending games. Don't play at schizophrenia or be a Nympho. Don't cry embarrassingly loud when Jilted in love… I met a man, loved him. Call Him not by any name, he is every man Who wants a woman, just as I am every Woman who seeks love. In him… the hungry haste Of rivers, in me… the oceans' tireless Waiting. Who are you, I ask each and everyone, The answer is, it is I. Anywhere and, Everywhere, I see the one who calls himself I; in this world, he is tightly packed like the Sword in its sheath. It is I who drink lonely Drinks at twelve, midnight, in hotels of strange towns, It is I who laugh, it is I who make love And then, feel shame, it is I who lie dying With a rattle in my throat. I am sinner, I am saint. I am the beloved and the Betrayed. I have no joys which are not yours, no Aches which are not yours. I too call myself I.

FASE 1: The Urban Elf era
HELLquin SONGS

Before we’d left Özlem, Byron received an unaddressed package at our doorstep. The return address read “Pahti Nuclear Power Plant.” Quick research turned up a Plant by the same name, which was located in the Indian state of Dunukepitiya on the Malabar Coast. The package contained several photographs and a note that we loosely translated—“Many more pictures for your research in India.”
We cataloged the images, though we had no identifying information for the engineers pictured. We also tried to find the name of the person who had sent the package, but we could only confirm a last name: Lakshmi.
We took the next flight out of Türkiye and settled in our hotel room in Dunukepitiya. After one day, we received a phone call from someone near the Pahti Nuclear Power Plant. Though they didn’t say their name, we assumed that this was the Lakshmi who had sent us the package in Özlem.
Over the phone, “Lakshmi” (or so we believed), invited us for a private tour of Pahti on the condition we only documented the images taken by our tour guide (or given, in the case of these photographs). We agreed to meet the following day.

Top 5 Birdwatching Spots in Goa
When you think of Goa, vibrant beaches, lively nightlife, and mouth-watering seafood probably come to mind. However, Goa is also an underappreciated haven for nature lovers, especially birdwatchers. With over 450 species of birds across its varied landscapes—forests, wetlands, rivers, and mangroves—Goa offers an extraordinary opportunity for birdwatching. Whether you're a seasoned birder or a beginner, birdwatching in Goa is an experience that should not be missed.
Why Birdwatching in Goa is a Must
Goa's unique geographical features make it a prime location for a diverse range of birds. Its wetlands and estuaries attract migratory waterbirds, while the Western Ghats shelter forest-dwelling species. From the serene backwaters to dense, tropical forests, birdwatching in Goa offers an abundance of bird species and breathtaking landscapes. The winter months, from November to February, are the best time for birdwatching, as migratory birds flock to the region, making it an ideal time to spot some rare species. Plus, the cooler weather makes it a perfect season for outdoor exploration.
Top Birdwatching Spots in Goa
Goa boasts a range of birding hotspots that every nature enthusiast must visit. Here are the top five spots to check out:
1. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary
Located on Chorao Island, this sanctuary is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Accessible by boat, it was named after Dr. Salim Ali, one of India’s most prominent ornithologists. The sanctuary is home to species such as the black-capped kingfisher, white ibis, and purple heron, alongside a variety of other wildlife.
2. Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary
Situated in the Western Ghats, this is one of Goa's largest protected areas. The sanctuary is teeming with forest birds like the Malabar pied hornbill, emerald dove, and the magnificent great Indian hornbill.
3. Morjim Beach
While famous for its sandy shores and as a nesting site for Olive Ridley turtles, Morjim is also a birdwatching hotspot. The surrounding wetlands are home to species like sandpipers, plovers, and terns. If you're staying at one of the nearby hotels in Morjim Goa, you’ll find it easy to access this spot.
4. Carambolim Lake
This tranquil freshwater lake attracts numerous waterbirds, including egrets, moorhens, and jacanas. The peaceful atmosphere here makes it a fantastic place for a relaxing birdwatching session.
5. Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary
This lesser-known gem is perfect for those seeking a quieter experience. Bondla is home to species such as the ruby-throated bulbul, white-rumped shama, and common kingfisher. The sanctuary also offers family-friendly activities like nature trails and a mini-zoo.
