"eh, that tracks too i guess." it's not like maki put much stock into what happened the night prior anyways. things like that happen and while it was startling to see at first, she had already been made aware of jude's plans prior to them starting. piecing two and two together was easy enough after the initial surprise. "sydney? have a crush on me? hmm..." a thoughtful hum and she moves around jude sat at the table to fix herself up a cup of coffee. "she's cute, i guess." if that's actually what happened. "did you want a cup, by the way?"

"apparently i'm going grocery shopping because there's no cold pizza left for me," to which maki eyes the nearly empty box sitting on the table before looking back up at jude. wasn't actually miffed in the least that her roommate was indulging. like she'd mentioned earlier, maybe that is really just the perfect hangover food and who was she to deny jude of that? "oooh, that actually sounds so much better than going out for dinner," she exclaims, leaning in just a bit to showcase her interest. not to say that getting dressed up to go out was a bad thing but she'd been so tired from the work week that staying in is definitely preferred. hell, she wasn't even looking forward to buying groceries and she often finds the action to be therapeutic. another spoonful goes into her mouth, maki already looking forward to their evening that won't ultimately require her to cook. it's only when jude speaks again that she nearly chokes, hand coming up to pat at her chest in the hopes of cutting the coughing fit short. "me? obsessed? no! i was just teasing you. but you didn't even deny it that time so that just makes me wonder......" her face is red from the exertion, praying to god that a swig of coffee will quell the pain.

“Sounds like you only need to grocery shop because you think you’re too good for day-old, cold pizza,” Jude couldn’t help but smirk in her roommates direction, brows lifted in a solely teasing manner, referencing what the other said about resorting to eating cold pizza after a night out moments before. It didn’t bother her that Maki wasn’t keen on going out, it was something she admired considering the other was sitting there happily munching on breakfast cereal and one more drink the night before would have sent Jude into crippling migraine territory. Maybe the woman was better off, but she couldn’t claim that the invite hadn’t been for relatively selfish reasons. “I was thinking more like takeout and trashy reality tv,” she pointed out, though her attention was grabbed at the woman’s misunderstanding. Was being taken out to dinner, by her, something Maki seemed open to? Or was she just making it up in her hangover-riddled brain? Obviously, going out to dinner platonically was what the other woman must have been assuming. But, the texts were brought up again, and Jude didn’t miss the way that the other stated you, as though her story about Sydney hadn’t been convincing in the slightest. “You know, you keep bringing up those texts, I’m starting to think you’re a little obsessed with them.”

truth be told, maki really didn't know but she didn't think that delving into a topic this early in the morning is going to be good for anyone. contrary to popular belief, maki is not a morning person. she's just very good at appearing relatively put together for the sake of her job and the kids that may need her. "uh, no plans today, thankfully," she responds upon finishing up a big bite, chasing it down with the warmth of her brew. "i needed to get some food shopping done today since i've run out of things to eat during the work week but other than that, i'm free. are you really wanting to take me to dinner just because you had a little too much fun?" tiny laugh spills, her spoon twisted upside down from her mouth to leave it hanging there a moment. her roommate was so terribly funny sometimes. "i think it's the bartender's job to keep serving up drinks. it's the bouncer's job to kick you out if they find that you're being too rowdy. and you weren't," she shrugs, dipping the spoon back into the bowl and swirling the contents around a little. "in person, anyway. those texts you sent last night... i didn't even think you were capable, to be honest. or, i'm sorry — sydney was capable."
Tumblr media
Her hands warmed around the mug, happily drinking the caffeinated liquid in its original bitter form, hoping it would do its job and stave off the headache she was sure would come later. While Jude didn't usually work on Sundays, she still had a few designs for upcoming appointments that she knew she should probably spend time on, and the last thing she wanted to do was stare at a tablet screen as her brain threatened to split apart. "I'm not invested, I'm just... you know." Her shoulders lifted in a shrug as she mumbled the lame explanation that really wasn't an explanation at all. She was officially grounding herself from phone usage while she was drunk from there on out, the words she'd typed and sent to the other forever haunting her. Of course, she'd meant them in the moment, but now that she was semi-sober? The risk of losing the other if she admitted to them, ruining whatever friendship they'd built, demolishing the best roommate she'd had since moving to the city, was far too great to ever cop up to it. Poor Sydney, taking the blame for her questionable decisions.
"You're right, you're right," Jude relented, knowing it would only be a matter of time before the cold pizza wasn't so filling anymore. "Do you have any plans today? If not, how about dinner is on me?" She took a sip of the coffee, watching Maki make near silent work of her breakfast, an action that was noted and appreciated. "That's fair, but you should know that this is the result of my own bad choices and, honestly, the bartender is to blame. I'm pretty sure they're supposed to cut you off from the long islands after like, three or something."

totally content with their little morning routine ( routine whenever jude was hungover and maki was not ), maki continues to try and not make too much unnecessary noise in the event that it bothers her friend from across the table. crunchy cereal at the wrong time could annoy just about anyone. "i don't know that it's a fair comparison. i don't even know her so i can't say if i deserve her or someone else," she shrugs, not putting too much thought in such a hypothetical. it's not like they were close friends. maki was amicable because she knows of jude's relationship with sydney. nothing more to it. her eyes follow the thrown pizza crust, only to float back to jude's before letting out a snicker. "you're awfully invested in my love life this morning. i'm just trying to enjoy my cereal and coffee. lucky for you, nobody's making you move. i do think you should try and eat something better... eventually, of course." wouldn't want her to hurl all over the place. "oh?" another spoonful, the femme thoughtful over every chew. "and risk eating cold pizza for breakfast? yeah, doesn't sound too appealing."
Tumblr media
Her cheeks flushed a dull pink at the catch of her use of the word troll, a feeling of regret hitting her as soon as she heard the insult from the other woman's mouth. It was the best she could come up with at the time, the dull ache in her head not allowing a more convoluted reasoning as to why her roommate shouldn't bothered to be interested in Sydney. "Listen, I'm just saying. You deserve better, that's all." Jude dropped the cold pizza crust in the box and pushed it to the side, not willing to eat the dry bread even as an adult. "So if you were to date anyone, it just... shouldn't be her." Or... anyone, in retrospect. How long would it take, for the other woman to start dating someone and then moments like this, time spent together, become nonexistent. Her hands curled around the hot mug the other offered her, a sigh falling from her nose. "I didn't want to waste it... and the thought of moving from this spot to make something makes me wanna hurl." Jude took a sip of the coffee, a content hum falling from her lips; arguably it was way better than the cold pizza. "You should come with... next time we go out."

"trolls?" she sputters out, half in laughter and the other in disbelief. maki was under the impression that jude was friends with her, or maybe that's what made it okay to say in this context. she can't imagine that being hungover really helps with her mood either, which is why she's more than happy to tend to her roommate if need be. coffee is a good start though and she gets to work on fixing them both up something to kickstart their day. "i said she was cute, not that i want to date her. objectively, you know," she shrugs, not thinking to put much weight on it. it's not like she'd ever pictured herself dating the girl. "here," with coffee done, the mug is rested before jude before maki retakes the seat opposite, happy to dig into the large bowl of cereal she'd poured for herself. "is cold pizza your new hangover food? or just whatever's around that doesn't actually require effort?"
Tumblr media
Deny. Deny. Deny. Growing up in a Catholic household, that motto had been her saving grace through her teens and well into her adulthood. Even living states away from her family, with a vastly different lifestyle, she still couldn’t shake it. Maki was a great roommate and an even better friend and she wasn’t planning on losing her just because she got stupid and sloppy while drunk. A few texts, no matter how questionable in content, could be explained away, right? “Yeah, I guess if clingy trolls are your thing.” The pang of jealousy in her chest surprised her and she barely managed to swallow down the rest of the words that threatened to leave her mouth with the rest of the cold pizza crust. It wasn’t fair to her coworker and one of the first friends she made after moving here to throw her under the bus or use the word troll to describe her, but Jude couldn’t help it. “Please. I think my head might actually explode if it doesn’t get caffeine soon.”
