that character meta essay I just reblogged has made me very suddenly realize that two of my all time favorite characters could be described with "young girls who are cheerful and optimistic about the depressing world they live in, not because they have any illusions about it but because they see all the world's suffering and carry forward a determination to succeed anyway, inspiring the people around them, and also their name is Ruby."
