Can you do Jason Todd x reader who is Tony Starks daughter, also I love your writing!❤️
I had so much fun writing this🤠 Dad!Tony gives me life 💖
This is long so yeah, enjoy!
Tag list: @nervousmemzie @la-femme-lupita @jasonsballsack @c0-77
•It took a lot to convince both your boyfriend and your dad to finally meet each other.
•Tony wasn't very fond with that gloomy Gotham city and it's vigilantes. He said that their heroes were mainly people that didn't got over the emo phase and too edgy for their own good along side their villians.
•And Jason thought that Tony was just knock off of Bruce millionaire facade, just without the second face he didn't show to the public eye and also that he seemed like a very annoying man...
•However, and thanks to luck, you got then to have lunch in some fancy restaurant in New York.
•When Tony saw Jason for first time he was shocked. You were dating a 6'1 dude with a lot of scars and a white streak in his hair who just gave the vibe of going around in his motorcycle? Holy shit.
"I can't believe my baby is dating Rico from Madagascar Penguins..." Tony mumbled to Pepper as he saw you hand in hand with the boy.
•Pepper punched him slightly in his arm as she gave in the look of "don't screw this Anthony Edward Stark or I swear to God"
•Pepper wasn't your biological mother, but still was an awesome paternal figure to you and you were grateful that she was by your side in this
•Jason was trying his best, you could note and that was making you so proud of your boyfriend.
•His vocabulary was good, not many slurs or witty remarks and also he was being polite.
•Pepper was mesmerized with him, however, Tony was bombarding him with too much questions...
"So Gotham, huh? I've heard that there's too much crime there, how the hero stuff there?"
"What exactly do you do for living? Do you have a decent job or I have to worry?
"Are you a kind of weird punk kid who just drink all day and doesn't care about anything else?"
•You could feel how Jason's grip in your hand firmed as he tried to answer all the questions in the best way possible, it was too much and the tension just keep growing.
•But Tony wasn't finished. He wanted to prove if Jason was enough for you, he was your dad after all, he needed to know if he could trust Jason with you...
I have seen there's a new guy in the game, Red Hood! I think that what he's called in your city. He has been wracking havoc lately, not even Batman had the luck to bring him down...he seems pretty reckless"
•Tony's face was as hard as stone, so different for his usually cocky smirk and playful behavior. He drank the rest of his wine before continuing.
"Do you think you can keep my baby safe in a dangerous place like Gotham? Because I don't want to wake up one day and find out that she have been kidnapped by some freak and if don't, believe me, I don't have problem with (y/n) staying in New York."
•Jason had to took a deep breath and drink his whiskey to calm down his nerves.
"Gotham can be a very dangerous city, but I won't let anything bad happen to your daughter, Mr. Stark. Nothing would harm her as long as I can be there to prevent it..."
•And the silent fell in the table. Pepper and you were trying to change the subject of the conversation to something more lighthearted, like your job or some movie you were dying to see, but it just turned into small talk.
•Tony's gaze was all over Jason, looking for something wrong in the words he said a few minutes ago.
•He was searching for some twitch in his voice or to see him broke and reveal that he was lying about your safety, but he didn't find anything and the made him very happy.
"Alright kid, you seem okay." Tony said as he clapped his hands, getting the disbelief attention of you and Pepper." You don't give me sings of being a creep so that's fine, but let me tell you something, if anything bad happens to my daughter I swear to God I'm going to find you and kick your ass until you can't move, deal?"

How the Mighty Have Fallen: Chapter Eleven
Warnings: Inner conflict, reliving trauma, and self doubt
Ship(s): Ineffable Husbands

“What happened?” he asked, cautious. This was the first time he’d seen Raphael in millennia, and he’d come back with a traumatized Crowley and didn’t even have the decency to explain what was happening. Raphael closed the door behind him as he entered and sighed, running a hand through his hair and looking at the couple sympathetically.
“I returned some more of his memories to him. They aren’t all exactly...happy ones. It appears the last memory I gave him is forcing him to relive some rather traumatic events,” Raphael murmured. He rested a hand on Crowley’s back and the demon flinched, burying himself further into Aziraphale. “He needs to rest. He isn’t in a good state of mind right now,” Raphael insisted. Aziraphale hesitated before nodding, situating Crowley better in his arms despite how desperately the demon was clinging to him.
“I was going to make tea, but it appears that I may be a bit caught up for a while. Would you mind doing that for me?” Aziraphale whispered to Raphael. He didn’t trust the archangel, not by a longshot, but he was here and Aziraphale planned to put him to some use, even if it all did backfire. Raphael gave the other angel a curt nod and a lazy salute with two fingers before meandering into his kitchen. Aziraphale decided not to think about how Raphael knew where the kitchen was. He held Crowley and carried him up to the bedroom on the top floor of the bookshop. When he tried to settle his demon onto the bed he whimpered and grabbed for Aziraphale, eyes open now and filled with fear.
“Don’t leave me alone right now, please angel,” Crowley said quickly. His hands were shaking. Aziraphale kissed Crowley’s knuckles and got into bed next to him.
“I wouldn’t dream of it, darling,” Aziraphale reassured gently, pulling Crowley close. The demon curled into his side and wrapped his arms around his waist, burying his face into the angel’s soft stomach. Aziraphale gently pet the demon’s hair until Crowley fell asleep, mouth open and snoring softly, glasses askew. Aziraphale carefully took the glasses off and set them aside, sitting him and rearranging Crowley into a more comfortable position before pulling the blankets over him. He didn’t leave, as he promised, but sat up against the headboard and waited for Raphael to come in with the tea. Crowley shifted and muttered something under his breath, reaching out and wrapping his arms around Aziraphale’s thigh in his sleep. The angel’s face flushed as Crowley smiled in his sleep and nuzzled against him.
“I’ve brought the tea. Where should I put it?” Raphael whispered, poking his head into the bedroom. He was carrying a tray with three cups and what appeared to be milk and sugar. Aziraphale gestured vaguely to the nightstand and watched Raphael carefully. Something about him rubbed Aziraphale the wrong way. He couldn’t sense any form of emotion from him, for one. He had somehow completely shielded himself from detection.
“Just because I’ve let you in here doesn’t mean I trust you,” Aziraphale said scathingly, making a point to have his opinion of the archangel known. Raphael smirked and sat in a chair at the end of the bed, swinging one leg over the other and leaning back.
“Good, you’d be a moron if you did,” Raphael replied coolly. “I can explain why I’m here if you’d like, Anthony already got the story.” Aziraphale hesitated before nodding. “Alright. In the beginning, Matthew was my apprentice. You know about Matthew right? Ok, good. So we were tight, really close. When Matthew fell, heaven put me in charge of casting him out and essentially eliminating his memories. Then they forced me to take away the memories of everyone in his life so no one knew about Matthew, just Crowley. At first it was working out alright. However, that’s changing rapidly. It’s quite literally causing the second apocalypse.” Aziraphale hid his anxiousness by scoffing at the other angel.
“You really expect me to believe that Crowley’s memory- or rather, the lack thereof, is causing the Apocalypse?” Aziraphale asked with a chortle. Raphael deadpanned.
“Yes. The relationships he had were with many vital and important people in both heaven and hell. His absence in their memories is causing a rift. Anger, denial, confusion, they’re all caused by the lack of memories and making all parties involved more aggressive. I’m sure you remember when Gabriel stopped being as nice as he first was,” Raphael continued. Aziraphale paused to consider his words. It just seemed so preposterous that Crowley, his Crowley, was so important that his absence would cause a war. Then again...being the creator of stars and nebulas would have made Crowley fairly significant in heaven. Maybe…
“I just don’t see how this would cause a second Armageddon. I mean...Crowley said that we knew each other before, and it hasn’t affected me much. I get the occasional headache, but it’s nothing like what happened to Crowley,” Aziraphale insisted, his stubbornness overshadowing his curiosity and thoughts that this could be a reasonable explanation. Raphael considers Aziraphale for a moment, crossing one leg over the other and rubbing his beard/chin in thought.
“Your memories haven’t been restored yet, I assume?” Raphael asked, standing up from his chair and clasping his hands behind his back. He was unashamedly studying Aziraphale, looking the principality up and down. If Aziraphale hadn’t been sitting on the bed, he was sure the archangel would have done circles around him.
“No, they haven’t, and I don’t see why they should be. I remember Crowley now, we are together and in love and that’s all that really matters. I don’t need to remember our past together,” Aziraphale said firmly. Raphael raised an eyebrow.
“If you’re so sure, I suppose I can’t force you. Think on it, though. My offer still stands.” And with that, Raphael swept out of the room and left Crowley and Aziraphale alone. The demon shifted and muttered something in his sleep, curling up tighter into a ball. The angel sensed no distress, which he was grateful for, but he himself was suffering from his own inner battle. He didn’t need to remember his past with Crowley. It was unnecessary. Or was it? What if it helped them? Or helped the angel better understand his partner?
What if Aziraphale couldn’t truly love Crowley unless he remembered?

So if you don’t know, Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) has come upon us, and after a not so great year, I have been lucky enough to still have a group of friends I can turn to when I’m in need, both irl and on this site. Everything is already so long, so I won’t ramble more at the beginning, but all I can say is even if we don’t talk as often, or even if you don’t think you’ve had an impact, just know that I had a very tough year that took a massive toll on me and even if you reblogged something about our ship or replied to one of my posts, that’s enough to give me a bit of happiness. I’m very excited about this, I really am.
part i. to my partners
I’m lucky enough that I have quite a few plots, all of them with partners who I adore and admire and am in awe of, and believe me when I say it wasn’t hard at all to write my own personal letter for each of you <3
@abernathywrites - I don’t think there’s a word to describe your writing other than wonderful? I’ve fallen in love with Sebastian and Bella, my depraved and corrupt murder couple, and I’m so pleased to say I get to write with you knowing just how talented you are. You’ve got a way with words that I just hope to meet halfway, which is one of the reasons it takes me approximately seven thousand years to get a reply, but I enjoy our plot so much knowing how many layers there are to it.
@aguswrites - oh KAY we have two plots together now and I am so invested in both of them like our minds…..are so iconic. I swear, we kinda just yell stuff at each other that don’t make sense or connect and then twenty minutes later, we’ve got this sprawling plot with intricate relationships and amazing muses and I’m so in love with it all. I really didn’t expect it to spiral into the absolute mess that it is—when we were first plotting, I was hoping I’d be lucky to plot with someone who didn’t mind darker plots and oh my gosh, I wasn’t disappointed. You’re one of the funniest people I’ve plotted with but you still write so exceptionally well in a darker setting and I love it so much?? I cannot even begin to explain how much I love our murderous near-sociopathic isolated and tragic children, and our badass criminal would-die-for-each-other-without-question squad. I truly just enjoy chatting with you and sharing memes and writing with someone who has the same kind of excitement as I do, it’s such a wonderful feeling and I hope you know the excitement is reciprocated <3
@arisaint - We’ve literally just started our ship and I am already so excited about it. The time period, the differing personalities, the sCaNdAl…I’m game for it all and what we’ve got so far is just so great, I’m so happy I’ve got such a talented writer to plot with and someone who’s so sweet and nice to talk to about whatever we feel like <3
@bvckywrites - OH BOY can I just say? How much I love our ship?? I think, at this point, we’ve taken the brand Homoerotic Sexual Tension and Subtle Animosity and made it our own. I’ve had so much fun with Sage and Val over the past few months, one of my favorite dynamics I’ve written so far. Every ask meme I write for them kills me more and more with each one I get sent but it’s so effortless to write for them, and that’s one of my favorite things to find and I’m so happy I did :)
@billeypiper - Ah yes, how could I forget the person who gives me literally every single ask meme I want? I love Madelaine and Milena so much, they’re such different muses and that’s why I love our ship. It’s ridiculous how long it takes for me to write one (1) sentence but my interest/love for our girls has never wavered, and I hope you know that <33
@danascullyrps - I’m absolutely so behind on our plots it’s a tragedy wow I promise to get my shit together asap because everything to do with pirates is like…gold for me and I love where we’re going with this.
@grcvitywrites - No, we haven’t yet started our plot, but does that mean I’m any less excited? Absolutely not??? I’m the type of person who’ll get most of their muse from messaging about headcanons and talking about our muse’s backstories and it’s so much fun to do with you :)
@meghvnmvrkles - I owe replies and I’m mad about it because I’ve been so excited about these guys for a while now lmao. Anything to do with secrets being exposed and gossip girl and terrible people doing terrible things to each other is right up my alley and I am so ready to really get into this plot because it’s gonna be such a great time I can’t wait to finally finish them okay ily <3
@of-marauders - I love our ship dynamic so much wow it’s so interesting and heartbreaking and sad and I’m so excited to get to the next bit!! Something with so much worldbuilding and background information is something I’ve never really had before in a plot and it’s a shame because I’m the type of person who likes to know everything about the environment I’m writing in. And that’s why it’s so great that we’ve got a plot going because I’m wholly invested and can’t wait to continue.
@pcralta - My lesbian victorian vampire ex-girlfriends will be the death of me and no, I’m not upset about it at all what do you mean? All the angst and pining that’s going to come with our plot is exactly my cup of tea and even though we’ve, like, just barely started, I already know your writing is great and so is Aurora and so are you <3
@princessflowerwrites - HEY THERE I LOVE YOU AND YOUR WRITING AND YOUR ENTHUSIASM FOR LITERALLY EVERYTHING EVER?? You’ve got this infectious kind of happiness when we message that it’s practically impossible not to catch it, especially when you start sending inspo and headcanons for our ships and it’s so nice to have a partner who’s so into our plots I love it so much. You’re just genuinely a great person who likes to send some good inspo posts and really, that’s something everyone should have on this website because it’s a great thing :’)
@rosecolore-d - I MIGHT CRY WRITING THIS??? Listen. I’ve been through a few different ways of writing this out, but I hope you like what you get because that’s pretty much how I get all my replies out to you lmao. When we first started writing together, I just kept hoping that our ships wouldn’t die out because of how much I loved our plots, our muses, the way our writing styles worked together because they can be so different from one another in one reply and then so similar in another. You’ve evolved my taste in music through your playlists, I’ve both laughed out loud and teared up reading some of your messages and headcanons, I’ve stayed up until 5am sometimes talking back and forth with you and it’s one of my favorite things that have ever come out of this website. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: We stan our couples who sin or we stan no one at all. Aaron, my Soft and Emo songwriter with the biggest inferiority complex I’ve ever seen, and Camille, my manipulative, won’t-have-sex-unless-she-might-die-in-the-middle, evil bitch, are now two of my absolute favorite muses to write. Yeah, it may take me six months to finish an ask meme but it’s literally only because I’m trying to figure out the best way to make you feel the angst and pining as much as I do. I cherish our ships and our friendship okay ily <33
@vii-writes - The first time you ever messaged me was to compliment my writing and honestly, I don’t know if you’ll ever grasp how much that meant to me. I’ve started ships with people through liking their posts or getting the courage to message them first or reaching out after seeing a plot we were both interested in, but I had never had someone reach out to me after they’d read some of my meme responses and wanted to write with me because they liked them. I am so in love with our kids, I’ll go down with Celia and Anthony. I am so happy we started talking and every time I see I have a message from you is a great time <3
part ii. to the ones i admire from afar
If you’re on this list, take this is my formal invitation to come talk/plot with me because I admire you all from afar <3
@fablehaven @ofaphroditea @sidneyyprescott @shutuprhian @chvrliehunnam @maraswrites @faithwritess @stardustmsings @cass1x1 @gothgf-writes @kaylasmuse @slytherin-writes @gortlys @asteriasrp @starswrites @malfoire @sanktas @astral-projects @lanacondorwrites
happy new year.

Two days after I said I’d upload it tonight, here it is! My October playlist is finished and it’s chock a block full of good music and also bad music that I love. From John Mellencamp to drone metal, from Katy B to Cassius, it’s all here and more. Deadmau5 also is here and for that I apologise.
Small Town (Acoustic) - John Mellencamp: Guess who had a legit emotional reaction to a John Mellencamp song this month, thinking deeply about what it means to be from a small town and how much this song gets right and wrong about identity and freedom in a small town versus living in a big town? This guy. I think this song works a lot better stripped down acoustically than it does in the album version. It gives the lyrics a lot more space, and really lays out just how simple the sentiment of the song is. It sets the tone of this month's playlist pretty well now that I think about it. I've been feeling like a real pea-brain hayseed this month and big chunks of this playlist really reflect that.
Katy On A Mission - Katy B: It feels like this and Hold It Against Me by Britney Spears (which was also 2011) is the moment that big american style dubstep completely crossed over into the mainstream, Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites was about six months ago and from there it was a tidal wave until oversaturation and complete death. But Katy On A Mission is different because it's at least got the credentials of dubstep pioneer Benga producing it and it doesn't go all-out on the super dirty bass, or even particularly have a big drop at all - it just uses it textually all the way through and it's better off for it.
I Only Have Eyes For You - The Flamingos: The way this song is recorded is insane. It literally sounds like they're at the bottom of a well. And it's mixed in that good early stereo hard-panned style so the lead is in the right channel and the whole harmony is in the left channel and absolutely soaked in reverb in a way that just sounds incongruous with the rest of the song. It sounds like a dream. My favourite moment is at about 2:30 when the harmony vocals get so large on the high note that they clip out and distort in a way that just sounds very, very cool.
Horses In The Sky (Live Version) - The Sound Of Animals Fighting: The Sound Of Animals Fighting was a post-hardcore prog supergroup where they were all anonymous (it was just the entirety of RX Bandits plus Anthony Green from Circa Survive) and I really wish they'd done more like this after their first album - because they still wrote very very good songs but they got lost in the mire of studio ambient interludes and being avant-garde for the sake of it which sometimes worked and most times just bored you which thankfully they only succumb in the end section of this version. Compare this to the studio version if you want to know what I mean, halfway through the guitar solo it just starts playing in reverse.
Split Wide Open - Cannibal Corpse: Here's what I mean about feeling like a pea-brain this month. Cannibal Corpse is proper troglodyte moron man music. It makes me feel dumb as fuck like a real stupid guy. There's something interesting about Cannibal Corpse's enduring ability to shock people, and that a band making such extreme music are at least a name that people know. They were in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective for god's sake. Before Marilyn Manson and that wave of cabaret shock-rock really got into the popular consciousness Cannibal Corpse were making shocking, violent music without any of the glamour and I think it's served them well in the long run. Songs like 'Hammer Smashed Face' or 'I Cum Blood', are shocking in title, artwork and content to this day are still musically shocking to the vast majority, far more than Marilyn Manson's spooky androgyny and wearing like a top hat and having fangs or whatever that's aged like milk and become just another boring cliche. The idea of the devil being charming and sly, disguised in charisma is so much more boring than the devil just tearing you apart like mince meat and eating you. Anyway I'm here to say Cannibal Corpse is good music for dum-dums like me.
Funeraloplis - Electric Wizard: Someone's edited it now but it's still in the footnote links, but the best ever piece of writing on wikipedia was the quote on Electric Wizard's page where they were explaining the origin of their name because it said "Is the name Electric Wizard made out of two Black Sabbath song titles? [smokes a big bud of weed through a can] Hahahaha, yeah it is!" which is so good and sort of all you need to know about them.
I <3 U So - Cassius: Looking back through this list it seems I'm having a real 2011 moment for some reason. I don't think I *get* Cassius. From everything I read about them they seem to be french dance royalty but they literally have two good songs and they're both in this playlist. These two songs are very good though so maybe it's just that. Anyway it's a shame what Kanye did this to song on Watch The Throne but I don't blame him, it feels like this song is just impossible to work with. It's at a weird tempo, it's incredible loose, it basically has one section. I imagine this song would have frustrated a lot of DJs when it was popular cause I really don't know how you would mix in or out of it, but fuck it while it's on it's a great song!
Youth, Speed, Trouble, Cigarettes - Cassius: This is the other good Cassius song. I'm pitching it as the theme song for when they eventually reboot Skins. I really appreciate that this song has 1 idea and basically just does every variation it can with it before bringing it to a climax. When your idea is this simple and this good that's all you need. Also the big toms that kick in after the 'just one more' but are heaven sent.
It Took The Night To Believe - Sun 0))): Sun 0))) are such morons and it's so funny that you can be so dumb and so serious about this sort of music at the same time. On this song Greg Anderson is credited as Mystik Fogg Invokator and Stephen O'Malely is credited as Taoiseach, which is the name for the Irish prime minister. Whenever I listen to Sun 0))) for the first two minutes I'm like 'lol this sucks' but then suddenly the guy is like 'cry yourself to ash' and I'm feeling the pull of the void quite heavily. Basically it's just like that meme.
Seven Angels - Earth: I remember ages ago some guy posted Earth 2: Special High Frequency edition and it was just this whole album with a high pass filter on it which is a funny joke. Anyway it interesting to think of this album in the context of when it came out. Two years after Nevermind, six months before In Utero - grunge at the absolute height of its power, stoner metal like Kyuss and Sleep huge when suddenly this guy comes out of nowhere and distills guitar music down to its essence: slower, louder, heavier than anything else by an order of magnitude.
Mutual Slump - DJ Shadow: I finally saw Xanadu this month and now I can finally relate to the weird smiling breathing out your nose noise that she makes after she says 'I'd never hailed a cab before' in this song.
Walkin' On The Sidewalks - Queens Of The Stone Age: Queens Of The Stone Age's first album is 20 years old this year and I've been thinking a lot about how it was a two person operation. Josh Homme played and sang everything on this album except the drums and it's funny to think about writing this sort of music all by yourself outside of a jam structure. He really sat down with a pad and paper and wrote down 'outro: bass riff x400' and then recorded it just like that.
Witch - Maps & Atlases: I wake up with this song in my head so often it's insane. I think a triplet groove in 4/4 like this is such a good and underused feeling and this song really deploys is perfectly. I want more of this, the good kind of math rock where it's not just guys doing midwest emo tappy riffs that all sound the same.
Down 2 Hang - Kirin J Callinan: This is what meeting up with people from the internet feels like. It's kind of a shame that this album got completely overshadowed by the Jimmy Barnes screaming meme, and that it's the first and last a lot of americans will ever hear of Jimmy Barnes but in reality it's exactly what Kirin J Callinan wanted to good for him I suppose.
Fast In My Car - Paramore: If you can't tell already I'm having an extremely basic bitch moron man month and that included listening to this Paramore album a lot and telling my girlfriend about how isn't it so interesting that the guitarist Taylor York just took over drum duties for this album after their longtime drummer quit and did such a good job playing drums AND guitar and her rightly not caring at all. I'm always impressed by songs that keep the same chords through the verse and chorus, it seems impossible but it works great here.
Don't Stop The Dance (feat. Delafleur) - Breakbot: I'm clapping my hands to stress each syllable when I tell you that Disco Will Never Die.
Oqiton - Jeremy Dutcher: I'm so glad this album won the Polaris Prize because I feel like I would never have heard of it otherwise. I absolutely love it, and I think what I love so much about it is that it doesn't fall into the trap of similar projects like this in the past of smoothing out all the jagged edges and turning it into plastic pretty music from the untouched ancient peoples - it's a real and alive reinterpretation of old music that looks toward the future and past in equal measure. Including the actual original recordings in each track is such a smart move, it gives you the context you need so this album isn't about liner notes and extra sources and it lets those old recordings seamlessly fold into these new reorchestrations.
I Remember - Deadmau5 & Kaskade: Anyway moron month continues here with the only worthwhile contribution to the planet earth that Deadmau5 ever made, I suspect by letting Kaskade do most of the work. It sounds sadistic but I really appreciate how this song is nearly ten minutes long, I'm a big fan of any song with that much confidence that actually pulls it off.
Overtime - Jessie Ware: Fucking Jessie Ware is back and she’s got Bicep producing! I think I added this song to my playlist before it was even a minute in, I just heard the bassline and my brain stem said yes.
Body - Julie Jacklin: I really think Julia Jacklin might be the best songwriter around right now and I cannot wait for her new album. I guess this keeps with the moron man theme by telling it from the other side. I keep listening to this song and then getting into a real mood for about an hour afterwards so I can't imagine the damage the album is going to do to me.
Can't Tell Me Nothing - Kanye West: Throughout the whole ongoing Kanye drama I've been thinking of this song. " I feel the pressure, under more scrutiny, and what I do? Act more stupidly" "I'm on TV talking like it's just you and me". Anyway he's had is money right for a long time but it's becoming increasingly apparent that you really really can't tell him nothing. I think it's interesting that the thing that seems to have spurred him into clarifying his beliefs and finally backtracking on anything is that Candace Owens tried to credit him for the shitty Blexit thing and it turns out the one thing you can't do to Kanye West is manipulate him into putting his name on something he doesn't believe in or didn't create. It's insane that John Legend and Mos Def and Talib Kweli reaching out didn't change anything but Candace Owens taking one too many liberties absolutely did.
Like Wolves On The Fold - Colin Stetson: I've said it one million times but I love Colin Stetson. I love how straightforward this is for a Colin Stetson song. You can sing along to it! So much writing about him focuses on the intricasies of his technique rather than his resulting very human, very primal music. I feel like his music is not very far from beating on your chest and yelling a lot of the time (especially toward the second half of this song) and the saxophone element just makes it a lot more socially acceptable.
Sack 'Em Up, Pt. I / Sack 'Em Up, Pt. II - Gwenifer Raymond: Bandcamp had a really good article about American Primitive the other day https://daily.bandcamp.com/2018/10/10/american-primitive-list/ and I found this album in it and fell completely in love instantly. I listened to it five times in a row. It's just incredible and I'm so glad that the music I love is finally being rescued from the mire of New Acoustic youtube men with their slapping and tapping and harp guitars and moving forward in new ways with artists like Sarah Louise, Marisa Anderson and Gwenifer Raymond. Women are finally allowed to play guitar now and thank fuck. One of the things I really appreciate about this album is just how written it feels. Every part, even the very swirly Part One of this song feels very purposeful, and if not totally written at least improvised in a tight framework before moving into the completely written second half. There's nothing wrong with improv but in a genre like this that's almost overrun with guys putting out hour long improv records it's refreshing to hear someone with such a clear vision execute it so expertly.
Bleeding Finger Blues - Gwenifer Raymond: Also, get a fucking load of this. An absolute powerhouse performance from a master. There's not enough solo banjo music around and it's a shame because I don't know if there's a better argument for banjo as a solo instrument than this song. The other thing I like about this album is there’s three banjo songs on it, which works well for breaking up the sequencing and making each song really distinct in a genre where albums can really blend together.
4:30 - Danger: It's a shame that Danger never really fulfilled his potential. With songs as good as this as 19:11 he seemed set. But then he took about a decade off before his debut album and I guess he lost something along the way. Anyway, doesn't matter because when you've got a song as good as this it's all you need. Also here's a good video where someone just put this song over the bar scene from Terminator which really accentuates the vibe in my opinion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z37R39-mff8
Crybaby - Abra: I love love love the production on this. A friend sent it to me because he said it reminded him of the Call Me Mr Telephone song I was raving about and he’s absolutely right. I love how formless it is, it goes through about three different verse ideas before finally getting to the chorus at about a minute and a half in and it’s only stronger for it. I’m so glad a new generation of darkwave adjacent people are discovering freestyle because this is great.
OMG!!! - Yelle: This song is probably best experienced with the music video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoWK4rV3INY It’s fantastic on its own, especially the “oh my god!” sample and the whole chorus section, but the video - titties out, covered in glitter, very very good dance move for the rising 'ooo' part, a hamster is there. Really accentuates it.
Copacabana (At The Copa) - Barry Manilow: Was thinking about this song the other day. Woke up with it in my head actually which was strange. I feel like this song and the Pina Colada song definitely take place in the same cinematic universe.
King Of The Dead - Cirith Ungol: I've been rereading Lord Of The Rings and also a very dodgy 70s sci-fi series called Dray Prescot and so divine fate has drawn me to discover Cirith Ungol. The good kind of metal where all the album covers could also be fantasy novel covers and all the songs are about how cool it would be to slay an ancient demon with a sword. I love this song because it feels impossible to sing it without doing some very dramatic face acting and also his voice is completely insane. I feel like this is maybe just how he talks.
Sugaree 10/21/1978 - Grateful Dead: Grateful Dead are good and ever since I came to terms with that I've felt like I'm always on the precipice of buying a box of tapes, covering my car in confusing stickers and dropping completely out of society. The problem with a big chunk of live Dead recordings that I've heard is that while the playing is always on point, the vocals can vary wildly - especially when they try any kind of harmony, but this recording is just great. Fantastic vocals with a lot of feeling, ample crowd noise so it doesn't feel like just a sterile soundboard recording, and of course an incredible extended jam.
Ring De Bell - Brother Resistance: I don't fully understand what rapso music is yet, I don't have enough understanding of the culture or surrounding genres. I basically just found this Best Of compilation and have been listening to it a LOT. As I understand it it's 70s Trinidadian calypso music that got very political, which is very cool. I'm a big fan of this sort of lyric where it feels like you could just go on and on for days about all the places you should ring the bell.
Kojack - David Rudder: The crown jewel of this compilation is of course this song I've posted about before and absolutely love to death. A protest song about them taking Kojack off the TV because it's too violent when shows like Dallas and Dynasty, which are far worse, remain on the air. Miami Vice! Before youtube comments and online petitions you had to make extremely good songs about this kind of thing, and its a huge shame that we've allowed this to die.
The Power Of Love - Celine Dion: I love Celine Dion because all her songs sound like they were recorded across 5 countries and 8 different studios and cost two million dollars. They always sound too expensive for casual listening to me, like I should have an emergency mink coat on me at all times just in case The Power Of Love starts playing in a supermarket.
Airworks - J Dilla: I've been listening to Donuts a bunch this month and really thinking about what makes him so good and the vast legion of Dilla imitators on soundcloud bad and I think this song is a good example. The main sample sounds straight up ugly, it's backwards and twisted to hell, the main strings part keeps folding over itself, it's just chaos but completely controlled chaos. Every imitator is so afraid to make a total mess like he does and is too focused on the underpinning laid-backness of the beat, where Dila somehow makes the relaxed feeling easily as a result of a million clashing elements.
Anti-American Graffiti - J Dilla: I also found a playlist on Spotify where someone had put together Donuts with all of the the original tracks it sampled (or at least the ones that are available on Spotify) and it's such an illuminating new way to listen to this album. https://open.spotify.com/user/keatonkreps/playlist/1TPeWt38uceWXD1Vhyf7wx?si=NJ_jHrYqQpCt18q-W9nrag
Marvel - Solillaquists Of Sound: Every genre has good music in it. Even rappity rap conscious hip hop has good songs like this one. There’s another song on this album called Popcorn that’s basically the It’s Media picture converted to a .wav but this song is good. Especially her vocals when they come in halfway through sounding like an astrology zine except good.
Rock Island Line - Johnny Cash: Johnny Cash has around one million songs about trains, including ‘Blue Train’, ‘Train Of Love’ and a song called ‘I’ve Got A Thing About Trains’ but this is the best one because it’s about train-related fraud and doing perhaps the most outlaw country manoeuvre ever and telling the toll man that you’re carrying livestock when you are in fact carrying pig iron.
I <3 U So (Skream's Made Zdar Feel Like He Was 20 Again Remix) - Cassius: Also as a kind of coda, here's Skream's version of I <3 U So, where he's completely ironed it out and turned it into a pulsing dnb thing which is always impressive to me when people completely reverse the feel of a song in a remix.
Worms Of The Senses / Faculties Of The Skull - Refused: Stereogum had a really good article about The Shape Of Punk To Come on its 20th anniversary and whether it really did turn out to be the shape of punk to come. They asked a bunch of people whether the title seemed arrogant and the vocalist from La Dispute had a really good answer where he said "But it’s like calling your shot and then fuckin’ hitting a home run. If it was arrogant, it was justifiably so." which is so great. https://www.stereogum.com/2020358/refused-shape-of-punk-to-come-turns-20/franchises/sounding-board/

Best Albums of 2020
Hello again friends! Another year has passed and therefore it’s time to reflect on the music and art we enjoyed in the past 12 months. Per my annual tradition, I’m dusting off this ol’ blog to write about my favorite albums and songs of a year that will likely live in infamy in the history books. I’m trying to reflect on the positive in both this essay and my personal mindset, so let’s not discuss social distancing or vote counts or contagious viruses or hand sanitizer and instead focus on the things that distracted us or powered us through them in the form of music.
I generally do a personal Top 15, so I decided to stick with that again for this year’s shenanigans. Best songs and potentially another new list idea soon to follow. And, as always, I welcome dissenting votes or other recommendations from those who read and agree and/or disagree.
Let’s do this!
HONORABLE MENTION:
Snooze
“Still” EP
Self-released on November 27
I normally don’t include EPs in my end-of-the-year lists unless I create a separate list devoted just to them, or 2 years ago when my favorite release of the year was an EP (shout out to Invalids). Snooze’s 2019 release “Familiaris” was my favorite album of last year, and this new EP brings a lot of the same energy and sound, but with a much different mood and circumstance. Bassist Cameron Grom tragically passed in 2020 after a lifetime of battling illness, leaving Logan Voss as the primary songwriter and lone consistent band member. Voss partnered with YouTube drum sensation and producer Anup Sastry for “Still”, and the results are certainly massive and memorable. The songs seem to be significantly sadder and more drawn out on “Still” but the circumstances certainly explain these changes. I’m grateful Voss managed to still put something out that is unique and makes me smile even during his heartbreak and struggles, so this EP is definitely still worth mentioning.
#15
Alpha Male Tea Party
“Infinity Stare”
Released December 4 via Big Scary Monsters
Both this album and the Honorable Mention are ranked pretty low on my personal list despite my personal adoration and affinity with each band. This is entirely based on how little of time has elapsed between their release dates and my compilation of this list. With some additional time to listen and process, I might have put them both higher, but without that I’m inclined to still mention them here but can’t in good conscious put them further up the rankings. Similar to Snooze, Britain’s AMTP took a slightly darker, more morose mood into their newest full length, but there’s still enough ass-kicking riffs and grooves to still inspire movement and energy. Bassist Ben Griffiths has come out of the shadows a bit more on this release as well, sharing the spotlight easily with guitarist Tom Peters and proving that he’s better than just holding down the lower notes. This album’s release was also a complete surprise, so kudos to the band for keeping things under wraps and giving fans an nice year-end present.
#14
Elder Brother
“I Won’t Fade On You”
Released October 2nd via Pure Noise Records
Elder Brother has been an object of my adoration for the past few years, but I’ve never been able to fully embrace an album of theirs as a whole. 2020’s release is no exception, unfortunately. They’ve penned some of their best songs to date (such as the gorgeous slow jam, “Projector”) and have expanded their sound with a full backing band. Unfortunately, meandering songs like “Hair” just drag away energy, and the second half of the album really just sort of panders around without resolution. The first half is top notch, but they really end with a whimper instead of a bang. Still, the great songs do shine brightly and warrant this album being included at this spot.
#13.
Jeff Rosenstock
“NO DREAM”
Released May 20 via Polyvinyl Record Co.
Speaking of surprise releases, perennial punk powerhouse Jeff Rosenstock put out “NO DREAM” with no promotion whatsoever. This left fans obviously surprised and that shock was quickly overwhelmed by a super high energy record full of infectious melodies and garage-rock aesthetics. There are a few clunkers but otherwise this is a charming and pleasant listen with some surprisingly deep and brutally honest lyrics and subject matters by Rosenstock. It was also cool to see Jeff get some solid publicity from this record such as an appearance on Late Night with Seth Myers. More attention for musicians like Rosenstock who have clearly put in the hard work is a worthy cause, so props to him and his merry band of misfits.
#12
Knuckle Puck
“20/20″
Released September 18 via Rise Records
Chicagoland’s Knuckle Puck have been one of the more impressively consistent pop/punk bands of recent years. I’ve always admired their skilled dual vocal arrangements, clean-boosted guitar tones and monstrous hooks. I definitely enjoyed this release but I also have a hard time distinguishing a majority of the moments after the record has stopped spinning. When it’s on, it’s pleasant and fun, but I’m hard pressed afterward remembering what songs are on this release and what are on previous years’ albums or singles. More KP music is never a bad thing, but hopefully future releases give them more sticking points.
#11
Unwed Sailor
“Look Alive”
Released July 12 via Current Taste
After over a decade of near-radio silence, Unwed Sailor have come out with guns blazing in the past two years. Johnathan Ford has put together a new band (most recently including longtime Minus The Bear drummer Erin Tate) and has churned out two full-length records in back-to-back years. I personally prefer 2020’s “Look Alive” slightly to 2019’s “Heavy Age” as it feels more of a throwback to the simpler, jammier Unwed Sailor releases of old. The record doesn’t really have any down points but also tends to drift along without a ton of memorable moments, oddly. Still, though, Ford and company seem to be on a torrid pace and I’m all in favor of enjoying the ride.
#10.
August Burns Red
“Guardians”
Released April 3 via Fearless Records
The model of consistency. August Burns Red are a well-oiled machine at this point. Every few years they hunker down in the studio and churn out another genre-setting collection of catchy metalcore songs. Drummer Matt Greiner is the most outstanding on this release (as per usual) with some truly jaw-dropping fills and beats, and the production for this record is top notch as always. It’s sort of hard to explain what’s good about this because it’s anything and everything. You can set your watch to this band and I’m grateful every time I put them on.
#9.
Melted Bodies
“Enjoy Yourself”
Released September 18 via Plastic Smiles
Another year, another band that Anthony Fantano turns me on to makes my AOTY list. The Internet’s Busiest Music Nerd didn’t formally review this album but did say they kicked ass in a “Y U NO REVIEW” segment. After a few moments of listening, I sprung for the album and it completely took over my music library for the past few months. I equate them as a sort of bizzaro hybrid between “Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job” and System of a Down, with Mike Patton-esque vocals, brutal but fun breakdowns, unique electronic elements and overall weirdness. Seemingly containing every genre of music all at once, this album is all over the place in all the best ways. What an amazing debut. It’ll be fun to see where these oddballs go from here.
#8
Beach Comber
“Parting Cuts”
Self-released on April 24
What a fun surprise this record was; in retrospect it feels like that was a recurring theme for bands and artists in 2020. Beach Comber is Rory Friers, riffmaster general from And So I Watch You From Afar. This album doesn’t sound like anything his main group has put out, but instead was meant to be a wedding present for two of Frier’s friends that would never see a mass release. If there’s one good thing that COVID did, it was to encourage Friers to put this out as a pay-what-you-want release to gather some funds in lieu of touring and playing shows. Because of this, we were blessed with a very different but exceptional collection of minimalist, varied low-fi rock. It feels like a lost Anathallo album or Sufjan Stevens b-side collection, and was a welcome breath of happy fresh air.
#7
Hot Mulligan
“You’ll Be Fine”
Released March 6 via No Sleep Records
It feels like every year I’m thanking my buddy Steve Lee on this list for getting me hooked on a quality emo record. He first sent me the incredibly fun video for “*Equip Sunglasses*”, but I wasn’t immediately hooked. I couldn’t quite get into Nathan Sanville’s scream/sing vocal style at first, and thought the band was slightly generic. Still, I found the song getting stuck in my head for roughly the next rest of my life, and eventually checked out the full album, and was pleasantly surprised by the subtly complex intertwining guitar leads and arrangements. Also, kudos to the band for writing pointed and brutally honest lyrics on topics that some bands wouldn’t touch (go read the lyrics for “Digging In”). And yes, Sanville’s vocals eventually ended up really, really growing on me. These young men from Lansing, MI should be proud of themselves for their strong stances and songwriting, and it’ll be fun to see what they put out next.
#6
Man Man
“Dream Hunting in the Valley of the In-Between”
Released May 1st via Sub Pop
After a few years of relative silence, Philly-based weirdos Honus Honus and Man Man gathered up another pile of instruments and multi-instrumentalists, and the result is yet another collection of supremely catchy songs. Longtime fans like me knew what they were getting, but I think this is one of Man Man’s most complete and accessible albums yet, with not a moment wasted or thrown in without thought. There are so many fun little vocal quips (The random “Went straight to voicemail!” in “Goat”; the solo chorus of “Sucking diiiiiiick” in “The Prettiest Song in the World”) that make the listener smile every time. Everything feels planned out and executed flawlessly, which is impressive when each song features several guest musicians (including Rebecca Black!) and a rotating cast of instruments and players. Keep being weird, Man Man. We don’t deserve you.
#5
Protest The Hero
“Palimpsest”
Self-released on June 18
It had been 7 years since Canada’s Protest The Hero put out a full length after leaving the world of record labels and crowdfunding campaigns. It wasn’t without its difficulties, largely due to singer Rody Walker running into vocal issues during recording sessions. Thankfully, he was able to overcome his difficulties and frankly, he killed it. There wasn’t much more life-affirming than hearing him hit ungodly high notes at the end of “From The Sky” and his joy-filled delivery was infectious on every other song. And of course, the rest of the band also fully delivers with their usual technical brand of metal. No complaints at all, hope the next one doesn’t take 7 years to show up.
#4
Caspian
“On Circles”
Released January 24th via Triple Crown Records
I was very excited about this release from basically the end of 2019 on, as these Massachusetts instrumental rock mainstays released the single “Flowers of Light” at year’s end. Thankfully, the album delivered in spades, and it is easily my favorite instrumental release of 2020. Well, that’s not technically true; 2 of the 8 songs have vocals. One welcome addition is an awesome contribution by Pianos Become The Teeth’s Kyle Durfey for “Nostalgist”, who fits the band like a glove. The second vocal track is the lovely eponymous closing track, which gives a pleasant change-up conclusion. Caspian’s three guitar approach means the listener always has a wide swath of atmospheric noise and full bodied sound, and the formula is definitely still working. There’s a reason this sextet are revered, and “On Circles” is the band firing on all cylinders.
#3
Touche Amore
“Lament”
Released October 9 via Epitaph Records
Touche Amore has been one of my favorite bands for several years running, so expectations were very high for their fifth release. 2016’s “Stage Four” was a massive success but is still very hard for me to re-listen to or encounter due to the heaviness of the album’s subject matter, and “Lament” is at least a change in that pace. Jeremy Bolm is never one to pull punches or address the uncomfortable, and his vocal delivery is as engagingly abrasive as ever. Bassist Tyler Kirby is the most obviously improved, but that may also be the production choice of Ross Robinson, who seems to have received as much publicity by working on this record than the band did. All in all, more the same is never bad with these screamo mainstays.
#2
Into It. Over It.
“Figure”
Released September 18 via Triple Crown Records
Evan Weiss is the one reliable dude. We get a new Into It. Over It. record every 3 or 4 years, and they’re always great. His songwriting and arrangement skills are top notch, and there’s enough cool little moments or unique additions to keep the listener engaged throughout the entire album. Weiss’s skills as a guitarist are in the spotlight as always (”We Prefer Indoors”), but drummer Adam Beck proves his talents throughout (”Brushstrokes”). What truly makes the album great for me are the little moments of variety or subtle changes in instrumentation or delivery that pop up in every song. The best example is the middle of the second verse of “Living Up To Let You Down”, when the band changes up the straightforward beat and chord progression to deliver a double-time feel with differently punctuated guitar chord hits (this is very hard to describe in writing; just listen to the song at 1:28). If the songs on their own weren’t catchy or well-rounded on their own, this album would be great, but it’s the moments like this that truly push it out on top. This record lived up to every high expectation I had and I’m thrilled that Mr. Weiss is a part of my life.

END
“Splinters From an Ever-Changing Face”
Released June 5 via Closed Casket Activities
But enough about positive thoughts and happy feelings...Every piece of writing or commentary on 2020 will likely point out how bad of a year that we all just experienced and how grateful we are to be moving forward. I definitely agree with this sentiment for the most part but do feel like we had a lot of interesting positive moments in the year in general. However, with that logic, no album better summarizes my general aesthetic towards this weird quarantined year than this ungodly amalgamation of brutal hardcore this supergroup has wrought. Counterparts vocalist Brendan Murphy sounds like a completely different beast with a lower delivery and growl than his fans traditionally encounter, and guitarist and wunderkind producer Will Putney makes this record sound horrifying, hellacious and, well, HEAVY. Add in some unnerving audio samples and the fact that most songs are between 1 and 2 minutes, and I can’t think of anything else to best summarize my feelings toward 2020. This was the perfect album to put on and let loose any angry or negative thought with the ferocity of the tsunami of sound this group created, and should be commended as such.

Mumbling Music, Soundcloud Rap, and Feeling Like an Old Man
I never thought I’d be “over” a genre within the space of a year. My obsessions tend to be longer-lasting, or at the very least, something that I can return to later even if it’s solely for nostalgic purposes. After “discovering” hip-hop in 2015 I quickly gravitated towards the “trap” subgenre whose outlandish figures like Young Thug and Future provided a much-needed break from the years of straight-laced and hyper-earnest music I’d been listening to most of college.
In addition to trap’s personable artists, the subgenre has managed to become one of the most popular and dominant sounds over the past several years. This combination made the scene feel communal and accessible as it grew to become an undeniable a part of the cultural zeitgeist. In fact, hip-hop is part of the cultural landscape now more than ever as artists are propelled to success by internet memes which has led to a “look at me” mentality.
In 2016 a distinct new class of rapper began to emerge who utilized the path that had been paved by their trap forefathers to carve out their own niche and fortify themselves as the “next generation” of hip-hop. This group of (then) up-and-comers included people like Lil Yachty, Desiigner, and 21 Savage who quickly earned the derogatory label of “mumble rap,” a name inspired by the MC’s apparent lack of technical proficiency on the mic. These rappers took cues from people like Young Thug and Future (who are also often lumped into this group) but remain distinct for a few reasons. One: almost all of these artists blew up while still in their teens. Two: almost all of these artists used SoundCloud as a platform in their rise to prominence (paving the way for future artists). Three: Many of the most popular “mumble rappers” also happened to be members of the XXL 2016 Freshman Class.
This inclusion in XXL is the most important commonality to note because it elevated the genre instantly and placed these artists squarely in the spotlight. As these rappers gained popularity and publicity over the summer of 2016 many people criticized the freshmen class for their evident lack of technical skill. It quickly ballooned to a genre-wide discussion about what these rappers “brought to the table” if they were eschewing the things that were typically used as barometers of quality within the genre.
I’ve already put my flag in the ground on the topics of lyricism and proficiency in hip-hop in this post from last year on the importance (or lack thereof) of lyrics. In retrospect, comparing these rappers to groups like Sigur Ros may have been a step too far, but I still stand by the overall sentiment of the post.
Now, I hate to sound nostalgic for something that’s only a year old, much less hoist up these artists who I ultimately think are just okay… but these mumble rap artists were significantly better than what we see coming out of the scene a year later. Thanks to the 2016 Freshman Class, hip-hop became an ongoing debate of “style versus substance,” and we’re only now seeing the implications of this shift a year after the emergence of mumble rap with the birth of a brand new scene. But before I get into that, let’s take a look at two specific artists from the mumble rap movement to help us make a direct comparison.
Two Sides of the Same Sound
Lil Uzi Vert is a Philadelphia-based rapper who first made waves in 2015 with his third mixtape Luv is Rage. In 2016 he rose to prominence thanks to his fourth mixtape Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World which birthed two singles, ended up going gold, and solidified him a place on the 2016 XXL freshman list. In 2017 he’s reached unprecedented heights thanks to a (bad) verse on Migos’ quadruple platinum “Bad and Boujee” which paved the way for his own (much better) track, the monumental "XO Tour Llif3.” Tour Lif3 was originally uploaded to Soundcloud as a throwaway track and has since become a breakout phenomenon going x3 Platinum in 6 months, proving both the popularity of Uzi and cementing the platform as a viable test for mainstream hits.
Moving onto another “Lil” rapper from the same scene: Lil Yachty is an Atlanta-based artist who originally broke through in 2015 with what everyone presumed was a one-off viral hit “One Night.” Within a year his next hit “Minnesota” was being played on Drake’s radio show and he caught fire. This platform brought Yachty a newfound audience which elevated his just-released Lil Boat mixtape and propelled him to the forefront of the hip-hop stratosphere.
I chose to highlight these two because they became symbols of the mumble rap genre within the space of weeks. And while they’re often lumped together, they oddly represent two opposing sides of the same sound. So why these two guys? Aside from their inclusion in the 2016 Freshman Class, they both blew up at the same time, dropped high-profile mixtapes within a month of each other, and use many of the same tropes within their music. I also believe one of the more silly reasons these two were lumped together was because of their hair.
It sounds stupid, but Lil Yachty’s bright red braids and Uzi’s ever-changing dreads became emblematic symbols of the mumble rap movement. Most of the 2016 class had a unique look, but these two stuck out like sore thumbs with their distinct and brightly-colored mops. What’s more, these two rappers specifically started challenging hip-hop norms by disregarding classics and even going as far to state that they are “not rappers” but instead preferring to be labeled as “rockstars.” For better or worse, they became symbols of the new school: two figures that stood in direct opposition to the traditions of the genre. It’s easy to see why they sparked debates, spurred controversy, and turned off old heads the world over in 2016.
There was a clear line being drawn in the sand over the 2016 Freshman. One side saw this crop of artists as energetic, hair-dyed teenagers with little artistic substance beyond the beats they were rapping over. Meanwhile, the other side saw this scene for the fun, carefree, and easily-digestible entertainment that it was intended as.
If it wasn’t apparent by now, I’m fans of these artists, and I resented the fact that these 18-year-olds were being cited as the “downfall of hip-hop” as if their very existence was an offense to the genre’s history. I’ll admit that it took me some time to come around to each artist, but Uzi and Yachty’s 2016 tapes quickly became some of my favorites that year. With upbeat, colorful, summery songs, these artists were just teenagers, but there is a time and place for the type of music they were making.
I was decidedly on the side of these artists. I didn’t see these guys as the "end of hip-hop" that so many classic rap fans were quick to decry them as. I’ve already linked this previous post on why a lack of substantive lyrics doesn’t equate to lack of substantive music, but The Needle Drop’s Anthony Fantano explains this subgenre’s appeal well in this video where he draws a comparison to this new sound and the punk mentality of the 70’s. These artists became unwitting figureheads for a movement that they didn’t necessarily even create, but their music doesn’t invalidate traditional hip-hop or threaten other artist’s artistic output.
At the end of the day, Yachty and Uzi are two musicians are working towards very different visions with Uzi representing more of a moody, rock-inspired crooning emo trapper and Yachty being more of an upbeat goofball “bubblegum trap” artist. They got judged unfairly, lumped into the same group, and became polarizing figures within the matter of a few months. But on a more positive note, they engaged and energized the younger generation, which led to hip-hop becoming the most popular genre in the US for the first time ever. Their techniques and approaches to music also paved the way for a new type of rapper who took their styles and carried them to their logical extremes. That brings us to 2017.
Mumbles Begat Soundcloud
Compared to this innovative wave of energy that we saw in hip-hop last year, 2017 has felt like a step backward in many ways. We’ve had fewer projects from bigger names, and less “movement” in the genre as a whole. I’m also willing to admit this perceived drop-off in quality could be chalked up to personal bias because, while I feel less enthused by the genre, hip-hop as a whole has still experienced a major influx of activity this year. The problem is its momentum that’s hyper-specified and that I feel absolutely no connection to.
I’ve never wanted to be the old guy who doesn’t “get it” yet, within the space of a year I feel like I’ve already crossed over into old man territory. A year after the rise of the “mumble rapper” we’re now witnessing the birth of a new class of artists dubbed the “Soundcloud Rapper.”
One major artist to blow up from this scene is XXXTentacion. I first became aware of his existence in early 2017 as he was gaining rapid popularity online while behind bars after being arrested for assault at 18 (you read that right). Between Lil Wayne’s infamous stay in prison to Max B’s recent memed-out sentence, rappers are no stranger to trouble with the law. XXX was let out on false charges (which I don’t buy) but I’m willing to (again) admit personal bias because I find the assault of a woman more heinous than simple gun charges. This controversy was a bad way to first hear about an artist and left me with a negative first impression of both the artist and the “scene.”
Around this same time, a Georgian rapper named Playboi Carti released his eponymous debut to surprisingly-high reviews. While not technically part of the same subgenre, Carti’s “Magnolia” blew up inexplicably, earning him a platinum and granting him access to high-profile collaborators the genre over. Carti’s music is similarly lacking in substance the same way that Uzi and Yachty are, so I can’t fault him for that. What I can fault him for is featuring on two and a half separate tracks this year in which his contribution is solely ad-lib-based. God knows I’m not against ad-libs, but it’s incredible to watch someone make a career being propped up by decent beats and more talented artists as they shout “what?” in between each of their bars. Oh and Carti was also taken into custody for assault in 2017 as well, only to be let off a month later.
Despite the public and controversial beatings, Both XXXTentacion and Playboi Carti have enjoyed success and made it onto the XXL Freshman 2017 list, ensuring them both a moderately-successful career. Comparing these two freshmen with the two I highlighted from the 2016 lineup provides a stark contrast between one group of mumbling trap artists and the second group of women-beating teenagers. Even setting aside the quality of their music, elevating and rewarding the abhorrent behavior of the latter two is undeniably a step backward for the genre. And as I’ve been editing this piece, TV’s Eric Andre has publicly spoken out against these artists citing a similar concern.
The Dregs
Now we move onto the two artists that inspired me to sit down to write this post in the first place: Lil Pump and SmokePurpp. These two Florida-born rappers are making music in the same style as XXXTentacion with distorted blown-out bassy instrumentals and loud aggressive chant-like vocals. Pump blew up several months ago on the back of the mindlessly-repetitive “D Rose.” The track, which finds Pump explaining why his expensive watches make him feel like Derrick Rose, was uploaded in late 2016 and has since garnered almost 30 million plays on Soundcloud. There’s honestly very little else to say about the song beyond that.
Critics and journalists took note of this subgenre’s meteoric rise in popularity and began writing Hunter S. Thompson-style gonzo journalism pieces about the scene including this one from Rolling Stone and this incredible write-up by The New York Times. I’d had these articles saved to my Pocket for later reading, but it wasn’t until I stumbled across a Noisey interview whose title was so great that I willingly dove into it.
The article in question “Reading This Interview with Lil Pump and Smokepurpp Will Make You Stupider” is a particularly glazed-over interview with the two Floridians in which the interviewer searches desperately for any semblance of a deeper purpose to these two artists. Their answers, relegated mostly to single-syllable words half-formed sentences, quickly revealed that there is no deeper level to Lil Pump and Smokepurpp. They’re not in search of anything, not inspired by anything, and their self-described “ih-norant” music is their artistic end-all be-all.
Now, look. I listen to a ton of stupid music, some of it just as “ignorant” and turnt up as this, but this new wave of music feels so baseless and devoid that I don’t see any silver lining to it. In fact, I write this primarily from a “worried mother” type perspective because these kids are fucking sixteen. Lil Pump (born August 17th, 2000) was admitted to the hospital following a lean scare just ten days before his birthday. XXXtentacion (born January 23rd, 1998) has (aside from the assault charges) put on a litany of violent concerts including fist fights, two-story jumps, and barricade collisions. I’m not the first to speak out against these artist’s carelessness, and I have a feeling I won’t be the last.
It’s music that trades out the bare minimum artistry that was there before for pure adrenaline and shock value. And again, maybe this isn’t “for me” and that’s why I don’t get it. If anything, these artists are simply a logical continuation of the mumble rap scene taking visual, musical, and artistic queues from the generation immediately before them. And Desiigner and Lil Uzi Vert have pulled equally-dangerous stunts at their shows… but it’s interesting to watch this progression take place so rapidly over the course of a calendar year.
And to circle away from the onstage antics and back to the music: I'm not saying Yachty's music is high art. It's still pretty dissonant, off-putting, and even bad on a technical level. But what Yachty traded those qualities out for is a unique sound and image based around himself. It may be discordant music, but it retains an undeniable sense of bright fun catchiness. Meanwhile, I feel like this new crop of artists retained that similar lack of technicality but traded out any sense of fun for pure adrenaline.
I don’t know where all this is headed. I do think it’s exciting that all this has happened within the space of a year, and it just goes to show how quickly the hip-hop genre is evolving and shifting. Maybe it’s just part of a bigger splintering and within a few years, we’ll have all these subgenres of hip-hop with dozens of artists occupying each well-defined niche with their own space carved out. I fully expect many of these guys to fall off and fade into obscurity soon (or at the very lease encounter more trouble with the law) but overall I think this energy bodes well for the genre. I just don’t want a teenager to die for it.
As long as young people continue to be inspired they’ll continue to innovate and push boundaries. I may not like the music, but I’m always in support of innovation. I sincerely hope I’m still on board for the next “wave” of explosive creativity in music, but I also know I will hit a point in the future where I just stop “getting it” and I accept that.
I don’t necessarily resent the scene, the music, or these artists. I think some of their extracurricular actions are deplorable and shouldn’t be celebrated, but that’s really about it. I see the appeal of the music, but I also know that it’s not for me. If anything, it’s exciting that real, young, independent musicians have the ability to build as much of a platform as more established artists, but sometimes that fan base is built on the back of shitty behavior that nobody should emulate.
It’s also interesting to watch the “gaze” of hip-hop move so quickly from one crop of artists to the next. It seems that nobody gets to spend much time on the throne, and now the artists that were exciting last year are practically legacy acts by the scene’s standards. It’s weird when the “primary focus” (or at least most explosive scene) of a genre is one that I fundamentally disagree with on nearly every level, but again, maybe I’m just turning into an old man.
I can’t think of any other way to end this besides words of hesitant encouragement. I want kids to keep innovating and scaring the adults (and 24-year-olds) by blazing their own trail. There’s something admirable about a sixteen-year-old throwing a song up on SoundCloud and becoming a certified star months later… but when it breeds violence and drug abuse I’m decidedly against it. It’s a fine line, and I respect everyone’s freedom/artistic choices/blah blah blah, I just wish everything was more positive.
So keep it up I guess. We’ll see where this scene goes. Who knows what the next year’s hot topic will be. For the time being, keep doing you. Just don’t do anything too stupid.

Top 11 Records of 2016
Yeah, top 11. Fite me irl bruh.
I have opinions. Validate me.
* = “I wrote about this before, go scroll down and read what I wrote before you lazy sod.”
11. NOFX-First Ditch Effort (Skate-Punk/Rock) Recorded while Fat Mike was still using drugs, NOFX’s most serious effort to date tackles his impending visit to rehab, and public embrace of cross-dressing. It’s good to see the perpetually juvenile outfit take on adulthood and more introspective topics while simultaneously pushing themselves as composers.
While no one was expecting NOFX to write the next Pet Sounds, they secure their legacy by refusing to burp out the same old shit 30 years into their career. They also temper what could be maudlin or self-righteous with just the perfect dose of their screwball humor.
Unfortunately, they cross the line into the ham-fisted on the overwrought, hyper-apocalyptic and preachy album-closer “Generation Z,” which features an extended slam-poetry/spoken word outro that doesn’t scan as being all that far removed from Jonathan Larson’s brilliant piss-take of the genre in Rent. Sadly, NOFX is definitely not joking here.
10. Bayside-Vacancy (Pop-punk/Emo/Alternative)* A mall-punk tour de force. Anthony Raneri channels his inner broadway star to craft not just Bayside’s best-ever record, but one of the few worthwhile records from Warped alumni in the last few years.
9. American Football-LP2 (Emo/Post-rock/Experimental)
If the only conception you’ve ever had of emo is the swoopy-haired fad of the Hot Topic years, this the perfect record to change that perception.
After a nearly 20-year hiatus AF is back with a much more focused sound. Unlike their debut which was plagued by endless instrumental sections that diluted the song’s impact, LP2 devotes its energy to fairly conventional song structures that are boosted by layers of intricate guitar interplay.
Their debut, while influential, has been massively overrated due to their sudden disappearance and the legion of copycat artists that took their Television-on-downers guitar stylings and crafted an Emo Revival in the first part of the decade.
It’s rare that a reunion album delivers on its promise, but this is a rare exception. Definitely the prettiest record of the year.
8. Car Seat Headrest-Teens of Denial (Indie/Alternative/Rock)
Nauseatingly self-aware, clever-clever, ironic bullshit for hipster millennials who’ve never heard of my fact checking cuz. Dude probably laughs at his own jokes on the regs.
It’s also jaw-droppingly self-assured in scope and vision, not just for an indie garage-rock album, but any post-Radiohead album. Will Toledo is on some next-level shit here and he’s just getting warmed up.
The most powerful moments shine through when Toledo takes on collegiate know-it-all hippies on “Destroyed by Hippie Powers” and his own existential dread and immaturity on “The Ballad of Costa Concordia.” Another great, and all too honest, pop-hook delves into the unfortunate precautions necessary to deal with your idiot friends on “(Joe Gets Kicked out of School for Using) Drugs With Friends (But Says This Isn’t a Problem).” Spoiler: It’s Drugs.
Unfortunately, these moments of clarity are many times obscured by unnecessarily drawn-out arrangements, intentional vocal obfuscation (mumble-core anyone?), and single songs that jam two or three complete and disparate compositional ideas together rather than separating them into their own tracks.
7. Deerhoof-The Magic (Experimental/Noise/Punk)*
The first track is called “The Devil and his Anarchic Surrealistic Retinue.” That’s all I really need to tell you.
Take drugs, drink coffee, crank volume, party.
6. Joyce Manor-Cody (Emo/Alternative/Pop-punk)
On their list of the most disappointing things of 2016, Pitchfork accused Joyce Manor of sounding like Everclear on this album. I have no idea where that came from as the only similarity between the two acts are a preponderance for power chords and introspective lyrics, hardly unique characteristics in rock music.
However, Cody succeeds because it never tries to force its listener to feel anything. There’s an incredible sense of sadness and longing in this album, but it feels like someone sitting in their living room telling you stories about their life, and having all the disparate pieces fall into place.
The record gets its underdog charm from the simple but tight instrumentation. This sounds like something your friends in High School could have made, but with that extra bit of oomph that lets you know they’re going places.
I wish I had a record like this when I was 16.
5. Touche Amoré-Stage Four (Melodic Hardcore/Emo/Post-Punk)*
If you don’t cry, you: a.) Aren’t a human being, or b.) Have never lost anything or anyone close to you, so check your privilege.
4. A Tribe Called Quest-We Got it From Here...Thank You 4 Your Service (Hip-Hop/Jazz Rap)
On their first record in nearly 20 years, ATCQ give a master class in how to envelop modern sounds without devolving into tone-deaf pandering. Thus, their vintage brand of East-Coast Boom-Bap still sounds fresh, and the modern flourishes sound like an organic evolution.
For the most part, the record strikes a perfect balance between political state-of-the-nation tracks and homages to recently deceased member Phife Dawg. ATCQ make excellent use of guest artists to fill in the gaps and provide one of the most satisfyingly traditional rap records in recent memory. The only mis-step comes with the overly maudlin and un-subtle Phife Dawg tribute “The Donald.”
3. Chance The Rapper-Coloring Book (Hip-Hop/Rap/Pop)
If Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 opus To Pimp a Butterfly was the dark, tortured soul of the continuing struggle for racial equality in America, then Coloring Book is the movement’s pep talk.
Even on the somber moments of reflection, Chance never descends into pessimism. Furthermore, the party jams and love songs never feel contrived or overly sentimental. They feel like an urgent escape from a malicious world where the very act of daring to love yourself, warts and all, is a radical act.
The album also places itself in TPAB’s lineage by basing its composition heavily on gospel music, at times just outright dropping worship songs into the proceedings and littering the lyrics with religious imagery.
During many of the songs, there are ongoing backup vocals that almost play like crowd noise, giving the feeling that Chance is really just taking technicolored parade of joy through a wasteland of despair. Hell, “No Problem” almost feels like an unintentional homage to that scene in Ferris Beuller’s Day Off where he hijacks a float and leads all of Chicago in a sing-along. You just can't stop fucking smiling.
This is isn’t just a guy singing and rapping at you, he’s inviting you on a journey with him where salvation might not be dogmatic faith, but the ability to accept the blessing of life in whatever form it takes.
2. Kanye West-The Life of Pablo
If Blonde is the sound of a self-assured genius tinkering until he has the perfect, cohesive message, then TLOP is the sound of an equally talented genius slowly going insane.
Far and away his best production work, Yeezy seems content with ceding a significant amount of the spotlight to others--this conceit was explored further in his set design for the Saint Pablo tour where he usually performed in silhouette and primarily lit the audience--and this results in a slightly more disjointed product than he likely intended. Despite that, he conjures gorgeous soundscapes out of perfectly curated samples and creates an album that would be compelling even as a beat CD. Sadly, as thrilling as the backdrops are, his rapping doesn’t quite reach its potential here
Especially after his hospitalization, Yeezy seems to be in the same place he was in before dropping 2010′s masterpiece My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. With the tide of public opinion against him, Kanye digs deep and tries to create something so brilliant that no one can doubt him.
in doing so, knowingly or not, Kanye creates one of the most honest assessments of toxic masculinity since the Violent Femmes debut. Not once does he attempt to sugarcoat his narcissistic behavior. In a way he’s almost a tragic figure.
It’s an eternal quest for redemption that Will Toledo (even though I backhand-complimented his band back there) explains a lot better than me. IDK.
1. Frank Ocean-Blonde (Alt-R&B/Pop/Hip-Hop)*
Art.

Crowley let out a loud whoop as he plummeted through the fiery tunnel, grinning wickedly as he twisted and spun throughout the air. It reminded him of the time when he trapped Hastur in voicemail. After falling, Crowley would get a thrill out of the free-falling sensation. He’d gone bungee jumping and skydiving on a number of occasions. Now, why exactly was Crowley thinking about these things while he was plummeting down into hell? You see, dear reader, Crowley had realized his grave mistake in choosing this tunnel as the smell of rotting flesh and mold filled his nostrils. Our demon had made the fatal decision to use hell’s garbage chute as his entrance. So, rather than thinking too much about what waited for him below and pouting over his new jacket being ruined, Crowley decided to use that imagination of his and pretend he was just on another one of his skydiving trips. Imagination doesn’t get you everywhere, however, and as Crowley crashed face first into a pile of what he hoped was mud and not something else, he regretted everything.
“Ow,” Crowley grunted, sitting back on his knees and wiping off what thankfully had been mud from his face. He glanced around at the heaps of demonic trash and waste (yes, hell’s sewage and garbage systems were one in the same) and got to his feet. Garbage dropped from above through several different fiery chutes in the ceiling, most of it burning into a thick, black sludge that Crowley was up to his ankles in. Grumbling something about how the entire place was full of nutcases, Crowley shook off as much of the goo as he could and trudged through the mountains of trash. Some of it was so high up that it clogged up the garbage shoots above. Hell may be fairly organized, but they did not, by any means, know how to properly dispose of its waste. And the smell! Absolutely horrid.
“Are you sure you saw someone come through the chute?” An all too familiar voice echoed through the maze of trash and Crowley quickly hid behind one of the towering stacks, careful not to touch anything while also not being seen. Hastur and Ligur approached the tower he was hiding behind and he quickly scampered around to the other side.
“Yes, Hastur, I’m sure! I’m not a lunatic,” Ligur snapped. Crowley frowned in confusion. Hadn’t he killed Ligur? He was pretty sure he had. It was a permanent kind too.
“Ligur, my little devil, please. Let’s just go home,” Hastur groaned, irritated.
“Little devil?” Crowley whispered to himself, the epitome of confusion, tempted to peek his head around the corner just to know what the ever-loving fuck was going on.
“Oh come on, Hastur, that’s not fair. You know I can’t resist you when you use pet names,” Ligur hissed, but Crowley didn’t miss the pleasured undertone in the way he spoke to Hastur. His nose wrinkled in disgust.
“What? I thought you liked it, Snookums.” Oh God, Hastur was practically purring at the other demon now. And were they kissing? Crowley felt like he was going to be sick. In fact, Crowley felt so much like he was going to be sick that he verbally gagged, catching the other two demons off guard and forcing them to end their lip-sucking session.
“Who’s there? Come out, now!” Ligur shouted, and Crowley heard the two demons tromping towards his garage pillar. The demon cursed under his breath and took off into a sprint, ignoring the two shouting demons behind him. He weaved through the stacks of garbage and tried to find the exit, looking around wildly. He’d never actually been to the garbage rooms before. Only the lowest demons worked down here, and Head Office had liked him quite a lot until he and Aziraphale had been found out, so trying to find his way through this place was like a blind man trying to go through a corn maze. Just as Crowley thought he may have gotten a glimpse of the exit, a pair of hands grabbed him by the back of the jacket and yanked him backward, nearly dragging him through a rather nasty looking pile of decomposing ears.
“Well, well, well, what do we have here?” Hastur sneered, pinning Crowley up against one of the stacks of garbage. Crowley grimaced as an audible squishing sound could be heard when his back pressed against the pillar. Ligur hung back just behind Hastur, his eyes and the iguana on his head flashing rapidly between different colors. A sign of stress. Poor thing, the incident with the holy water must still be fresh in his memory.
“How the hell are you still alive?” Crowley muttered, looking over Hastur’s shoulder at the other demon. Ligur stiffened and his lips curled into a snarl.
“When our master’s son returned everything to normal, I was brought back. Surprise,” he sneered. Shooting a mock smile at the other demon. Crowley rolled his eyes and pushed Hastur off of him, straightening his jacket again.
“Right. Well, lovely seeing you two again, but I really need to go,” Crowley said dismissively, pushing past Hastur. “You can go back to your snogging now, I won’t be here for long.” Hastur sputtered in indignation and Ligur’s iguana turned a rather violent shade of red. It had always been so fun making those too angry, right from the moment Crowley had first fallen. A sharp, blinding pain shrieked through Crowley and he gasped, clutching his temple. He staggered forward and tried to keep walking, but the pain was excruciating.
“What are you doing? Why are you walking like that?” Hastur questioned, as socially-inept as Crowley remembered. He shook him off stalked towards the exit. Hastur and Ligur followed him, but Crowley paid them no attention. “Crowley! Stop! Where are you going?!” Hastur shrieked. God, his voice was annoying, but it was even worse when Crowley had a headache. Finally reaching the grime covered door that led out of the dump, Crowley pushed through and was immediately swept up in a crowd of demons milling around and going about their work. Using the crowd to blend in and hide from the demons pursuing him, Crowley kept his head down and altered his appearance slightly so as not to be recognizable. Hastur and Ligur were shoving demons out of their way and searching wildly for him. Crowley’s headache had gone back to a dull throb and he was able to look around without black dots dancing in front of his eyes.
“Records, records, where are the records,” Crowley muttered to himself, looking at the overhanging signs that jutted out of the walls, straining to read the chicken scratch that was written on them. He glanced back quickly to see that Hastur and Ligur were still in hot pursuit. He groaned and ducked under and unsuspecting demon’s arm and made his way through the crowd quicker.
Finally finding the sign that read ‘records room’, Crowley pushed his way past several more demons and ran in, closing the door tightly behind him. He sighed in relief and turned, and that relief was soon diminished. The Records room was almost a mirror image of the garbage dump, just with stacks of paper instead of trash. Files, loose papers, bound books, everything was just scattered around meaninglessly. It was almost as if Hell didn’t want any of this stuff to be found.
“Anthony J. Crowley,” a mechanical voice echoed through the vast space, making the demon flinch. He turned towards the source of the voice to find a hologram of sorts, kind of like the Metatron, hoving a few feet up in the air. He blinked.
“Ah- yes, that’s me. I’m looking for my file,” Crowley said, clearing his throat and facing the hologram completely. The bobbing head in the hologram nodded before disappearing. A thick, leatherbound book began to glow a light orange and was lifted into the air as if by magic, floating slowly towards Crowley. The demon plucked it out of the air and blew the thick layer of dust off of the cover, coughing and waving his hand as he flew into his face. His eyes lit up at the golden letters that adorned the cover. ‘The Life and Times of Anthony J. Crowley’.
“Will that be all, Mr. Crowley?” the hologram chimed in, appearing directly in front of the demon this time.
“Yes, that’s all, thank you,” Crowley said, barely able to contain the excitement that bubbled up in his chest as his fingers hovered over the cover. Everything about him, who was, who he knew, the things he did in heaven, all of it was right here. Crowley’s old name may even be in there. What if he’d had a family in heaven? Some angels did. Would it detail the other things he had helped to create? He wanted to open it and read it all right now, but he knew that he needed to get out of hell first. Thanking the hologram of sorts once again, Crowley tucked the thick book under his arm and marched out of the records room.
“Crowley!” rang out as soon as the demon stepped through the door,
“Oh, piss off, Hastur!” Crowley shouted, rolling his eyes and elbowing past some demons. He heard several shouts and grumbles of complaint as Hastur and Ligur shoved people aside to try and get to him. Crowley rolled his eyes and casually made his way to the escalator that led out of hell. Instead of just standing on it as he usually did, Crowley ran up the escalator steps. He quickly burst out of hell and sprinted as quickly as he could out of the building and down the street. God damn it all, why hadn’t he driven the Bentley?!

Aziraphale froze and gripped Crowley’s arm harder. That couldn’t possibly be Raphael; Aziraphale would have recognized him! To be fair, though, the archangel hadn’t been seen in heaven for the last few centuries. Aziraphale’s memory was outdated, while Crowley had seen the archangel in his memories just an hour or two before.
“Are you sure that’s him?” Aziraphale whispered anxiously. Crowley lowered his arm but stood slightly in front of the angel, nodding.
“That’s him alright. But what is he doing here?” Crowley muttered. Raphael locked eyes with him and he stiffened. The archangel had a knowing look in his eyes and beckoned towards Crowley, gesturing for him to follow him before turning away and walking briskly, the coat of his suit whirling out slightly. Crowley knew he shouldn’t follow him. He knew this was probably some sort of a trap, or maybe even a trick his troubled mind he’d come up with. So, he did the only thing any logical person would do. He told Aziraphale to stay put and bolted after the angel. Aziraphale shouted after Crowley but the demon ignored him. He made his way out of the park and looked around wildly, spotting the edge of Raphael’s coat disappearing behind a building and into an alley. Crowley skidded to a stop and then quickly dashed down the alley. It came to a dead end, piled with rubbish and such from the restaurant at the front of it. The archangel was nowhere in sight. Breathing heavily, Crowley looked around. There was no way he could have gotten away.
“You’ve gotten slower.” Crowley whipped around with a snarl on his face. Raphael leaned against the brick wall, one hand in his pocket and the other bringing a lit cigarette to his lips. Crowley almost laughed at the irony; the angel of healing partaking in one of the most damaging of human practices, it was honestly hilarious, but Crowley’s blood boiling at the very sight of the angel distracted him from the humor of the moment.
“What are you doing here?” Crowley hissed. “Doing heaven’s bidding like a little lapdog, are you?” Subconsciously, Crowley was shocked at the aggression in his tone. He’d seen Raphael’s regret in his memories. But there was a burning hatred uncoiling deep in his chest, lashing out like the snake he was and unleashing itself with full intensity. Raphael chuckled and took a long drag from his cigarette before standing up straight and considering Crowley with his unfaltering gaze.
“You’ve changed quite a bit since I last saw you,” Raphael said thoughtfully, a small smile tugging at his lips. “How’s your head? Does it feel good to remember some things?” he continued, casually, so casually it made Crowley uneasy.
“How did you know about?” Crowley questioned, finding himself unable to make eye contact with the angel in front of him. He glanced at the wall just behind him. He had glasses on; he wouldn’t notice, right?
“You didn’t really think you’re memories were returned because you read the book, did you?” Raphael said with a slight scoff. He put out his cigarette and miracled it away. Crowley’s jaw clenched but he tried to remain cool, and gave a nonchalant shrug of the shoulders in reply. Raphael smiled warmly and shook his head, letting out a heavy sigh. “Ah, Matthew- Well, Anthony, you never cease to amaze me with your blatant idiocy.” Crowley let out an offended gasp and tried to reply, but Raphael snapped his fingers and he found himself unable to speak. His eyes widened and his clutched his throat in confusion. “Now don’t worry, I’ll give you your voice back in a minute. I just need you to listen to me without interrupting,” Raphael said with a cheeky grin. It made Crowley’s skin crawl. Something about this angel just seemed...off.
“Very good. I do apologize for turning up out of the blue like this, and...well, essentially taping your mouth shut and cornering you in a dark alley, but this is important,” Raphael began. He took a deep breath and clasped his hands behind his back. Crowley watched him suspiciously. “I need your help with something. I have made a dreadful mistake,” the angel said quietly. If Crowley still had a mouth, he would have smirked, perhaps even let out a scoff. Raphael shot him a look, and Crowley’s skin burned from it. “Now is no time for humor. I mean it, Anthony, I would not be coming to you unless it was important,” Raphael insisted. “Your memories were not the only ones I removed after your fall. There were four others, all people close to you, and I am beginning to realize that my actions could very well bring about the destruction of Heaven and Hell,” he continued. Crowley felt a shock from the neck up and was suddenly able to speak again. He rubbed his stiff jaw and scowled at the archangel.
“And why do you think that I’ll help you? If it’s true you took my memories, I don’t want to be anywhere near you. Besides, I couldn’t give two flying fucks as to whether Heaven and hell destroyed themselves,” Crowley said smugly, putting his hands in his pockets. Raphael’s expression was stony, his lips drawn in a thin line.
“I know you will help me because the destruction of Heaven and Hell means the destruction of Humanity. I have watched you care for this world even after you had fallen. I was proud to see you hadn’t changed there. I know you love this earth. I know you love humanity. Being a demon with no real intent to harm gives you an advantage there,” Raphael explained. Crowley’s smug expression slowly melted away and he grimaced. He’d told Aziraphale in the park that the next Great War would be Heaven and Hell versus Humanity, but he was not expecting it to be now, so soon, and he certainly hadn’t expected to be told about it by the archangel Raphael.
“Alright. You’ve piqued my interest. But why me? Why not Aziraphale? He’s an angel, after all,” Crowley muttered, rubbing the back of his neck in discomfort and shifting on his feet. Raphael’s eyes saddened at the mention of the angel.
“If I were to return his memories now, before he was ready, it would destroy him. It is precisely why you would not tell him of your fight. If he knew some things he had done, both before and after your fall, it would destroy him,” Raphael replied. Crowley nodded in understanding, but his eyes still held distrust.
“But he’ll need to remember eventually. To prevent the end of the world,” Crowley said slowly. Honestly, the entire thing seemed somewhat ridiculous to him. How could the memories of four people affect the balance between good and evil so greatly that it would cause the world to end? And who were the other three? Crowley knew Aziraphale was one, but was clueless on the others. He had a faint idea of one, but he didn’t think it was very likely.
“Precisely, and so do the others. They each play larger roles in the existence of this world than they realize,” Raphael said. Crowley seized his chance.
“Who exactly are the others?” he asked, lifting an eyebrow in inquiry.
“Gabriel, Hastur, and Ligur. I thought you would realize that, since all your memories are back,” Raphael said, but the last part was more like thinking aloud. Crowley’s breath caught in his throat.
“Well, I get Gabriel, now, but why Hastur and Ligur? I was never close to either of them,” Crowley insisted, ignoring the pain in his chest. In his days as a young demon he’d sought the approval of his two superiors for decades to no avail. It was nothing to worry about now. Raphael’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion before they shot back up with realization. \
“Oh, bollocks, I didn’t complete the healing,” Raphael muttered, then cursed to himself. “Come here a moment.” Crowley hesitated before stepping towards the archangel. Raphael grabbed his hands and moved them to face palm up, then traced down the middle of them with his middle and index fingers. “There’s a few more things I need for you to remember in order for this to begin. Now, it may be painful, but I can end it much quicker than you were able to this morning,” Raphael said, tracing more lines in Crowley’s hands. They began to glow a pale gold, and the demon regarded them warily.
“What exactly are you trying to make me remember?” Crowley demanded, the bite in his tone taken away by the slight shaking. Raphael looked up and simply smiled, his eyes holding a bit of a mischevious light in them.
“Oh, you’ll see, Anthony.” Crowley blacked out.
