about Bibi Garvey (and her counterpart from Clan)
I'm going to discuss content from Clan as well as from Bad Sisters, so spoiler warning for both
.
.
.
.
.
one recurring criticism I've seen of Bibi's character is that we know so little about her (what's her job? where did her kid come from? what does she do when she's not lying around in the bath tub? why does her wife only get like 5 lines of dialogue in the entire series?)
it's not like that for Birgit, her counterpart from Clan; while she's still less developed than the other sisters, we do know more about her than we do for Bibi.
I believe that this is partly because in Clan, Birgit is autistic. many of the aspects of her character that are also present in Bibi, are reflections of her autism. (my assumption is that Bibi is not autistic, since it is never mentioned in Bad Sisters, and I can't find anything about it online from the makers of the show. If Bibi is autistic then you can ignore this entire post and I'll go stand in the bad-research corner of shame.)
her being the first to seriously propose murdering JP: in a sense, autism is being used to overcome the initial barrier of "it's not socially acceptable to murder your brother-in-law". Birgit is a character for whom social niceties do not matter, she is incredibly pragmatic about the whole thing and because of that, the catalyst for all the murder plots. (this is a bit sticky because it sort of gives the underlying implication that autism makes you amoral or a person without a conscience. I don't particularly mind because the entire premise of the series is "let's murder a man" it but I'm certain other autistic people will disagree with me on this)
the intensity with which she approaches the murder plots. this is where I think both versions of the character diverge the most. after shooting the guy's eye out, Bibi suddenly becomes the voice of reason and advises against new attempts (after almost quitting altogether). on the other hand, Birgit keeps pushing for new attempts right up until the end. in the final episode, when JP is dead and the sisters are scrambling and are all suspicious of each other, it's very believable that she gets called ruthless. In Bad Sisters, I don't know how to feel about Becka and Ursula are calling Bibi mental and psycho, considering how she is the only sister who has directly spoken out against any birthday murder surprises.
the lack of filter. calling Ursula pathetic. queen.
even minor things like a wardrobe of soft and comfortable clothes (sensory issues) and the clean and modern home (representing both rigid thinking and non-conformity) are reflections of her being autistic
a specific comment I recall (don't remember if it was on Reddit or somewhere else) is that it's like they came up with Bibi's aesthetic first, and then flunked on the backstory. I feel like that's kind of what's going on: they retained the aesthetic∕outwardly observable characteristics of Birgit, without keeping the autism, which is exactly the thing that ties all of those other aspects together.
my crack theory is that this is also the reason we see so little of Nora (her wife), but that requires a lot of reading into things so bear with me. My reasoning is:
Birgit does not like being seen as different because she is autistic; she desires stability and a sense of normalcy. (this is also why the eye thing is much more than just the eye thing: she is now visibly different, and that is something that's pointed out by other people as well. it opens her up to constant othering which is precisely what she does not want)
The entire point of her family is giving her stability and normalcy, and showing that basal desire for a place where she's Just A Mom and Just A Wife, instead of That One-Eyed Autistic. This also contrasts with the dysfunctional love lives of the other sisters, which further drives home how mundane Birgit's family life is (and that's exactly how she wants it).
Without Bibi being autistic, the entire "desire for normalcy" aspect of her character makes far less sense, so there is no narrative reason for scenes with her wife. (Especially given that Bibi is lesbian in Bad Sisters, I can understand Sharon Horgan's worries about it seeming like pandering to include scenes of Bibi and Nora just being domestic, given that there is no narrative purpose for it the way there is in Clan. It's not fair, but I understand the concerns.)
As another aside, I find it hard to understand why they didn't keep Bibi autistic, especially given that Bad Sisters really wanted to improve in the diversity department compared to Clan. I can guarantee you that a lot of autistics would have gone balls to the walls for an autistic one-eyed lesbian who kicks ass.

12 and 29 pleeeeeeeeeeeeease
for the fan fic authors asks
12. favorite place to write? Huh. Well. My favorite place to write is my desk. It’s right by the window so I can watch whats going on outside when I need to think for a moment; and it’s also tucked away in a corner so I’m afforded a tiny bit of privacy. And it’s the only space in the apartment that is ~mine~. But, and this is a big but, the chair that is currently at that desk is… not great. It’s wobbly and I’m 100% scared I’m going to break it if I swivel my weight too fast for some reason (an actual possibility with my kiddo running around). So, until I get a new chair I’ve been writing everywhere else, aka my bed and my couch, neither of which is perfect because of distractions and the way I end up hunched over the laptop. Depending on the day I can also write at my desk at work, but I can never really count on that, and I absolutely cannot write smut at work… so it’s not ideal.
Side note: anyone in this fandom a chair maker? We need chairs!
29. favorite story/poem of another author? Oh dear. This question is asked in the singular and I’m going to answer in the plural. Because how can anyone in this fandom possibly choose only one fic?
In the Morning by @gettingaphdinlarry – literal poetry. it’s short! why aren’t there more hits on this? it’s different and wonderful and you should give yourself the gift of reading it
Long Road to Love Leads Back to You by @myownsparknow – this fic killed me. I finished it on the bus ride home and it had me in such a state that I couldn’t go straight home but had to wander my neighborhood for a bit to just process and recalibrate my ability to interact with anyone
Promise Not To Stop When I Say When by becka & mediaville – i can’t tell you how many times i’ve read this. it’s all the angst and boys making the wrong decision at every turn and not knowing what to do with their feelings. this speaks to me on such a level that I’m a little embarrassed to admit it.
Adore You by isthatyoularry – this really yanked my heartstrings
and I know this is also cheating, but I’m going to rec this whole series: Poses by pillarboxred because the last fic is INCREDIBLE but I’m pretty sure it packs more of a punch if you read parts one and two first. INCREDIBLE. I just looked and I’m dismayed to see that not many people have read it.

Medford sisters open 4GoodVibes in Somerville
Originally published in the Somerville Journal on Dec. 7, 2017.
By Katie Bowler
If you’ve driven or walked down Somerville Avenue recently, chances are you might have noticed a new storefront, its windows filled to the brim with gifts and trinkets. Maybe the blinking lights on the sign caught your attention, or the smiling, sunglass-wearing pineapple.
Whatever the case may be, 4GoodVibes is starting to draw some attention.
Since opening in mid-October, 4GoodVibes has grown to include more than 100 artists, crafters and makers from Massachusetts. With an emphasis on local, the family-owned store sells everything from kitchenware to magnets, greeting cards to t-shirts, dog treats to soaps.
Since she can remember, co-founder and co-owner Becka Pierce-Whelan said she and her three sisters dreamed of opening a business together.
“When we were younger, our family wanted to open a family business but we never knew what it was going to be,” she said.
After she and her younger sister Emily graduated from a vocational school with a concentration in marketing, they kept their eyes out for a vacant space, ready to get their project off the ground.
Pierce-Whelan lives just down the street from the shop, and when she found it, her older sisters Sarah and Rachel jumped at the opportunity. Plus, she added, with the development coming to Union Square, there was no better time—nothing like this truly exists in the area.
“We wanted to do something [to get] local people involved,” she said. “We make all to of stuff that’s in here as well, like bath bombs, jewelry, magnets...candles.”
The other makers come from the Boston area, mostly around Somerville and Cambridge. While looking for products to feature, the sisters browsed local Etsy pages and visited craft fairs. While they were preparing to open over the summer, makers and companies came into the store to make sure their products were a good fit.
“We honestly add someone every single day and weekend,” said Pierce-Whelan. “We start meeting new people and we can’t say no, it’s awesome.”
The name of the shop stems from the four Pierce sisters, originally from Medford. The pineapple mascot, a tribute to their mother, encompasses the playful and open feel of the store, a place where everyone is welcome
One of their favorite parts about opening 4GoodVibes, she continued, is working one-on-one with the artists. Two people who craft handmade furniture came into the store, hoping to start selling their pieces. Because the space isn’t built to handle such big pieces, said Pierce-Whelan, she asked if they could come back with something else.
Within two days they were back in the store with new handmade coasters to sell.
“We’ve sold around 50 of the already,” she said. “Being able to work one-on-one with them and watch them grow and bring in new products [is the best part].”
Starting in January, they’re hoping to host tutorials and workshops, similar to paint nights, but calligraphy, card-making, things people wouldn’t typically have access too.
“They’re things you wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else,” said Pierce-Whelan.
Now heading into their second month, the sisters said they’re starting to recognize their customers, which perfectly captures their vision for a local community.
“We plan to be apart of the community...we want to hear what you have to say and continue to grow,” said Pierce-Whelan. ”[When you shop at 4GoodVibes] you’re supporting local, owner-wise, but also supporting 100 different local families. You’re supporting a lot more than just a business.”
