Reposted from @campbellsuz “Police got horses, we got horses” The Nonstop Riderz - an organisation of urban trail riders protesting with the huge crowds in Houston, Texas yesterday. It’s a pity so little acknowledgement has come from the horse racing and equestrian industries of this crisis in America. It’s worth remembering that the first cowhands were black, the first jockeys and trainers, who exercised and trained horses for white owners were black. In fact many were slaves; US writer Katherine Mooney has an excellent book about this. Yet black Americans have been almost erased from horse imagery in the US. That’s why it’s so great to see urban riders like this Houston group, @comptoncowboys in LA and @ebonyhorseclubbrixton in London show horses in the real, mixed race world we live in. As a writer and journalist, and anyone who thinks about horses, it’s important to consider how we write and treat race and equality, (or conveniently ignore it).
