art book in the mail today for a hidden gem, Devils and Realist! it's a great josei if you like primarily male casts, fantasy, and historical settings with drama. I really love the art style so I've been eyeing this artbook for months.

whb ch1 ramble (not analysis)
this concept is so metal though... setting them free is a very neat idea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have read fictional works where a descendant of Solomon had the power to back the political status of the demon he liked the most before- such as Makai Ouji: Devils and realist, whose main focus puts the descendant of Solomon besides demons such as Dantalian, Sitri and Camio.
In that work, William (as the descendant) helped many demons come to terms with their past traumas- some accrued during their tumultulous time serving Solomon-and in a sense assisted them through many trials and tribulations, and compelled them through the power of his ring, though he preferred treating said demons as just "regular guys" (which is so funny).
So it's cool seeing another work that also brings an interesting perspective to Solomon's 72 pillars and their hardships, helping them to find peace alongside the descendent- whilst also helping them to settle their complex feelings for their time with the original Solomon.
But this concept of freeing the demons from their bindings to restore their true power is truly unique. Most fictional works that I have read tend to bind the demon into a form of obedience or slavery, not set them free and restore them to their past glory.
Also in the legends of Solomon that I've read, there are demons who objected to being bound and some who obeyed without question; and some occult blogs detail very negative experiences of binding demons to their bidding as well (the occult blogs can be argued to be non fictional spiritual experiences.)
So in regards to this, although it seems in WHB the demons all loved Solomon and seemed to not dislike being bound, I wonder if they also have complex feelings regarding being bound to him for so long.
.... So seeing a story where the demons are set free and then elected in the aftermath is kinda bittersweet. Like relinquishing the grieving chains of the past, but also a form of letting go- of saying a final farewell to their ephemeral time with Solomon.

Is anyone else a fan of Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist? Their take on Gilgamesh is most interesting. In this manga/anime series, he reigns as the 94th pillar of Solomon as a ruler of the underworld and a duke of hell (DEMON GILGAMESH?!)
Here's his profile, its not 100% accurate but its a cool spin:

It's not Derkila. It's Lucifer from DEVILS AND REALIST that look A LOT LIKE IRUMA. When I first saw Iruma on the throne my first impression was that he looked like Lucifer...

So...hypothetically speaking, if someone wanted to get into Makai Ouji, would it be better to start with the anime or the manga? Your posts about it have piqued my curiosity! 😈
That is a good question. Personally, I've started with the anime and only read the manga years later. But let me tell you a few things to help you make that decision.
Well, first of all, the anime only goes over a tiny portion of the plot and still has some filler content. But since it doesn't concern itself with the most complex parts of the political intrigue, its explanations are clearer than the manga's often rushed exposition, so that makes it a good first introduction to the universe. It also ends on a pretty well picked time.
(And I absolutely adore the voice acting. But that's entirely personal.)
However, depending your preferences, the anime might be disappointing. (I'd say that's a good reason to start with it, so you can be impressed by the manga later, but still.) So if you're really looking for the best part first, the manga is better in quite a few ways. The art is great, breathtaking at times, and has the range to work with both the series's great humour and extremely dramatic intrigue. The MC is slightly more interesting in the manga, but that's mostly because it exposes us to his thoughts more.
A last point to consider, because it's still the number one reason I recommend Makai Ouji, which one is gayer? Well, the anime is WAY more heavy-handed on the subtext if you ask me (and that's not only on the gayness! the anime goes above and beyond in terms of vibes), but the manga actually throws us some gay crumbs in text. And there's more but no spoiling.
My conclusion is: Start with the anime, unless it takes a lot for you to get into something. If you need to be impressed, the manga is where it's at. Either way, go watch the anime's opening and ending, these are gifts from god to mankind.
(btw, about content and trigger warnings: if you survived Kuroshitsuji, Makai Ouji is a walk in the park, since it's similar but not as dark. but I can still make a whole list if needed.)

I finished reading Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist a few days ago and... Woow it was good, I loved its plot. But, in my opinion last chapters could have been better, I wanted at leats Michael was face to face with Lucifer >_<... Oh God!!, and Dantalion’s declaration. Their name’s meanings are cool.
I love archangels, angels, demons, and supernatural creatures so much!!

I would love to suggest a Manga to you, for anyone who is into demon-fantasy, action and slight shonen-ai (with not too much weight put onto it)
Makai Ouji - Devils and Realist
Even tho there is an anime based on it too, it does not even cover half of the content of the manga series. Back when the series was still ongoing (til about 2018) i remember always coming here to tumblr for the new scanlations, that were so wonderfully done by the fandom. I am still waiting for the translation of the last book into german to complete the collection on my shelf and still love every single character the author has created. (yes even the bad guys... which is a speciallity, you cannot hate them in the end, its impossible)

|| Occultist Side Note: Uriel ||
Tumblr media
Did you know that the arch angel Uriel had a Nephilim son? His name was Ornias and he was the first spirit ever captured by king Solomon, as well as the reason for Solomon obtaining his holy ring.
The story is told in the Legends of Solomon, where it is said that Ornias attacked the kings favored servant boy. Each night the demon would steal half the boy’s wages and drain his energy (by sucking it out of his thumb). Angered and wishing not to see his servant suffer, Solomon prayed to Yahweh (God) for the ability to combat this demon. Yahweh sent the arch angel Michael to Solomon with the ring, created from iron and brass, so that he may take control of and capture Ornias.
Side Note: This ring was made with the distinct purpose of controlling both angels and demons. Brass for angels, iron for demons.
Solomon used the ring to capture Ornias and bent him to his will, but Ornias, not wanting to suffer eternal punishment for his crimes, offered Solomon the chance to capture a series of other demons far greater than he.
So, in closing, it was Uriels Nephilim son who began Solomons journey towards capturing his seventy-two spirits.
