I've finally used my Moonman (Majohn) C4 enough to rate it. Iike nearly all MM pens I'll give it a 10/10 if I'm feeling generous.
Nib: Like the Q1, comes in extra fine and writes well, cannot compare to fine/med nib since I always go for the finest available, but I assume the fine nib will be the same as the C1/C2 (I seem to recal at least the finer nibs on C3 were bad, but those were gold coloured and very different) Either way I'm happy to assume you will get a smooth writing experience, with decent flow. For me, the EF nib being offered is a huge bonus. No issues with the feed so far, though I'd say it's a little dry for fast writing I've had no skipping, only paler/thinner lines if I write fast. As it's on the dry side, there's been no leaking so far.
Tumblr media
In terms of both nib and styling it resembles a stretched out Q1. If you liked the design of the Q1 but found the form unappealing/uncomfortable to hold, this may be the ideal pen for you.
Tumblr media
Filling: Like the majority of Moonman pens, it's dropper fill, according to the instructions that come with it. HOWEVER, It is, for some reason unfathomable to me, designed to look like a vaccuum fill pen. This design goes far enough to have a functional movement: an uncrewable end and vaccum pole built into the body that really pulls out... but without the diaphragm that would allow it to vaccuum fill properly. Out of interest I tried. This was what's called "a stupid idea" and probably wasted a few droplets of my precious Dominant Industries ink.
Frankly I find this descision to be both cynical (aping the look of a popular fill style that tends to command more money) and ugly (it's ugly). Once the pen is filled with a dark coloured ink this faux vaccuum pole doesn't really show, so the only sign of the design is the extra threading at the end, which I don't find to be ugly. Be cautioned that with lighter coloured inks or when the pen runs low on ink, the piston might be visible and unappealing. This detail with the usual visual style of a transparent acrylic Moonman, which tend to be droper fill precisely to create that minimalist look. Still, the solid acrylic body is very beautiful, as they always are.
Tumblr media
Since Moonman have never had a vac fil pen in their roster (as far as I'm aware) I suspect this was initially a sincere attempt to create a vac-fill mechanism which simply failed at some stage of R&D and rather than waste their product development money they released it as an oddly designed dropperfill pen. I prefer dropper-fill anyway. I find vacs fiddly, difficult to clean, impossible to top up and unpredictable. The lack of vac fill is a bonus to me, as I tend to use a dropper to fill my Wing Sun 3013s and lament needing to use the vac on my WS 601A, which is the only vac pen in my live rotation.
Lid is screw cap (this probably gives Moonman their resistance to drying up in storage, which is why they are ALWAYS in my ready-to-write deck, so any inconvenience is well compensated!) it posts somewhat securely. (if you're not a fountain pen nerd, posting is our special word for putting the cap on the back of the pen) being quite solid in its build and acrylic, the cap is weighty and when posted may not suit a writer who dislikes top-heavy pens. Unposted the pen feels a touch light, but well balanced. I'm not very sensitive to these things. Its construction is reasuringly thick in the acrylic and with the cap on it feels heavy and prestigious. Though some of the gold trim is a touch gaudy it is finished well without any flash/burrs/other signs of poor moulding, and it doesn't have the vile tackiness of the S5's plastic gem. As it's the same as the Q1 in many respects I expect this plasticy gold trim and clip will wear the same, mine showing thin spots in places and minor scratching which actually helps take the excessive shine off.
Due to impatience I ordered my C4 from already imported European stocks, rather than save money with an overseas order and potentially get the Asian market version what still says "Moonman". For this reason the barrel trim on my pen says Majohn, the European trade name since Kaweco patent trolled them. The nibs tend to not follow this rule, wether due to the specificity of the patent troll, or simply hoping no-one notices (don't tell Kaweco).
I hope you found this review interesting. I'll happily review more pens if anyone actually reads all of this and wants another.

Chinese Pens: The Final Chapter
Chinese Pens: The Final Chapter
Three years ago and after considerable research, I bought my first Chinese fountain pen, a Delike (Majohn/Moonman) New Moon 2 bent nib from Amazon. It was such a pleasure to use that for a time it was the only pen on my desk and for over two years, it was the only pen I used in my daily journal. The fine and extra-fine that I purchased were not in the same league and only the bent nib arrived in…

Comparision: MB Rouge et Noir vs. Majohn F9
Hello there, I'm currently basking in my 5 minutes of fame off having my snake fountain pen ask answered by Neil Gailman.
Since I am currently, as @thegrimshapeofyoursmile said, fame let me introduce myself.
I am Sibi, I am a writer of fantasy, historical fiction and everything queer under the sun - and I collect fountain pens.
Recently I finished editing a novel that was a lot of hard, rewarding and enlightening work. Neil's posts on creative writing and him encouraging people in his asks cheered me up a lot during the first round of editing.
And then there's the fact that I named the pen Crowley for obvious reasons.
It was my holy duty as an elder tumblrina to be all parasocial about it.
The pen I was - and still am - so chuffed about is a Montblanc Heritage Collection Rouge et Noir Serpent. (They also have a Spider one).
(Yes. It is that expensive. No, I am not rich. I earn a decent wage and have disposable income which I can - and did - save up. I am pissed that our economy is so nightmarish that this is genuinely a privilege.)
A few folks reblogged the ask claiming the pen was a Majohn F9.
Fair enough, Majohn specializes in copycat designs and the F9 is a copycat of the Rouge et Noir (they also did one for the spider themed one). They make nice pens.
I own a F9 myself. It was this pen, in fact that convinced me to save up and reward myself for a MAJOR milestone with it. That milestone being having finished that novel.
Considering all the mix-ups, I thought about comparing the two of them and make a list of how to tell them apart. The F9 is a rightfully popular pen and I really don't want people to try and find the pen they saw in the Neil Gailman ask, then die of shock at the price tag. Neither do I want people to order a F9 and then be disappointed that it doesn't look like the snake pen in the Neil Gailman ask, then not give it a chance just because of that.
Sooo here we go!
I got my F9 about two years ago and I love it. However, the paint quickly started to chip due to friction with other pens, so I kept it at home. (I since then updated my pen roll.) Since then, the paint has developed tiny bumps and bubbles and has a rough feel to it. Probably deterioration. At least the chipping should be no issue with proper storage, that was my bad.
Tumblr media
The Rouge et Noir is my first modern MB all others are vintage flea market finds, so it remains to be seen whether the resin will act the same. I never heard anything about it, so I honestly doubt it would happen. (Cause let's be real, we would make a huge and justified stink about it)
Sizewise: no difference. Same length, same circumference. The MB cap screws nicely on the F9. Vice versa not so much, the grip section of the f9 is a bit thicker and the cap is actually a little larger than that of the MB. Serious kudos to Majohn for sneaking in subtle differences while keeping the overall proportions the same.
Tumblr media
The clip is the biggest visual difference, with MB putting in a rather detailed snake, whereas the F9 sports a beautiful, stylized dragon with a wing on top. I know people who specifically prefer the F9 because they like dragons and the F9 is a beautiful, subtle dragon pen. Also good on you, Majohn for sidestepping the Montblanc Crest on the finial.
Tumblr media
The snake design on the nibs is exactly the same with the only differences being the shape of the breather hole, the size mark on the Majohn and the individual brand markers (and the fact that the grain on the tip is flattened on the upside on the MB which . If your main argument for a pen is the snake on the nib and the snake on the nib alone - stop reading now and get the F9.
Tumblr media
(I do think the MB nib is a hint bigger though and it looks like it was molded with the snake design while it is etched on on the F9 nib.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Weight wise - even fully inked, with 30g the F9 is significantly lighter than the MB who clocks in at 35g after having been inked and in use for about 8 pages of writing. Some people don't like heavy pens, so that's a consideration to make.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now the big question: how do they write? I inked them up with Diamine's Bloody Absinth, tried them and... Well, both are lovely. I bought the F9 with a fine nib in stainless steel, it is perfect for little notes in the margins or a detailed doodle of my bored coworker. The nib is quite stiff, s no line variation. The inkflow is quite juicy and it writes without issue or scratching. Good. Pen.
Tumblr media
The MB comes with a 14k gold nib that has a beautiful stinginess to it (not that my pettiness gets much use out of it). Since I have developed a love for broader nibs when writing I got me an M and I do not regret it. Especially when you like sheeny inks a broader nib and the ability to get a little variation in the ink flow make your writing just POP. I am utterly in LUST with this.
So... which one would I recommend?
Honestly, they are both great. If you have the Rouge et Noir as a grail pen, you chosen well and I wish you good luck hunting one down. But... this pen will not be an everyday carry. It will spend its days in my showcase or on my desk when I write short stories. It will be treasured and cherished (and insured) for it's own artistic merit and the craftsmanship that went into it, but also for the achievement it stands for. (And yes, also because I call him Crowley.) This is an 800 dollar pen. I will NOT take that to the office. Or anywhere near my family.
If you want a fancy looking everyday carry pen with a cute snake on the nib - go for the F9.
(I bet similar conclusions can be made about the spider themed Rouge et Noir and F9)
But also... have me being a happy little gremlin about having gotten my grail pen.
Tumblr media
(Also I will definitely not buy any pens this year. Let's focus on and enjoy what we have r.n.)

have ordered ink + the necessary supplies. hopefully they'll get here quickly (or I will lose my mind 💖)
oh, great! I cleaned out all my fountain pens before we moved, and then chose just a few to take with me. plus ink, obviously.
except someone took the damn ink out of the bag I had put it in. sooo it's probably in the storage unit now and I won't see it again until April 🙃

fountain pen hack help wanted ad
have you messed around with a pilot parallel?
Do you despise it's incredibly long body?
Can you google better than me/have access to a lot of pen bodies?
Help wanted! Please help me collect info on which pens the parallel can be swapped into! Because for some reason it's not just anything that can take a Jowo #6.
Pay: the feeling of unlimited power that comes from fucking with pilot's proprietary bullshit
Opus 88 #6 sized colora/omar/jazz and maybe others
Osprey Pens Madison
Pilot Spare Sign (not exact fit as noted in Mystery Arts' video)
not a pen but apparently Wing Sung converters can fit the original barrel?
Benu Parrot and Euphoria
Moonman/Majohn C3 (flow might need a hack to limit it, as reddit poster did)
Moonman/Majohn M2 (original/older style that only came in red) (needs flow limit)
Moonman/Majohn M2 (newer one that has color options)
Moonman/Majohn C1

Aileron as a pen?
Tumblr media
this majohn m400 in their yellow-orange colour doesn't exactly match aileron's slightly deeper terracota colours, but it's close enough and i love that it matches her Short Girl Vibes, so. it's so cute! pocket sized, just like her, and i just think it looks so pleasing with all that white trim. while i've never used a majohn myself (yet), i've seen more than one review of them say that they make for good, inexpensive workhorse pens that are reliable and easy to throw in a bag without worrying, which also to me feels very aileron; straightforward and no-frills.

The new Majohn A1 colors are looking nice.
I'm surprised they went with so many green/blue hues, but maybe that means they'll be coming out with more hues of other colors.
They're great pens for ~$40 to try out this pen style before making the jump to the much more expensive Pilot Vanishing Point.

whats the diff betwen a fude nib and a glass pen nib? <- knows nothing abt fountain pens
YOU ASK ABOUT SPECIAL INTEREST?
okay, a standard nib looks like this
Tumblr media
usually made of steel with an iridium tip to resist wear, but sometimes they are made of gold (or gold-plated). they're straight up and down from the nib to the tail
a fude nib (sometimes called a "bent" nib) looks like THIS
Tumblr media
it's bent. the purpose of this is to be a more expressive writing tool! holding it at different angles gives you different line widths. if you hold it straight up and down, it makes thin lines. if you tilt the pen back amd write at a "normal" angle, the lines will be thicker. if you flip the pen over and write with the back side of the nib, the lines will be especially thin! they're super fun to use and are helpful for art once you get the hang of them
a glass nib can vary in appearance in some ways, but they generally look like this:
Tumblr media
glass nibs aren't technically a fountain pen nib at all. they're a dip pen. for dipping! usually, a glass pen is made entirely of glass, like this:
Tumblr media
which is what makes the majohn n6 so interesting! it comes with both a fude fountain pen nib AND a glass dip pen nib, and you can switch them out as you please
Tumblr media
so i think that's pretty neat

Buying cheap fountain pens because I'm not rich enough to buy the $25+ ones for the excessive amount of colors of ink I have. I would rather buy more ink and cheaper pens lol
The $1.80 brandless fountain pen definitely feels like shit….
The $3 Jinhao fountain pen feels the same as my $25 fountain pen.
Though I suspect my $25 fountain pen might be cheaper if I get it off aliexpress instead of amazon because it was also a Chinese brand (majohn)
Okay it's like $15 on aliexpress.

so im thinking of getting this pen
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is a majohn n6 and it's a pen that you can swap BETWEEN EITHER A FOUNTAIN PEN OR A GLASS DIP PEN... which is SO COOL!! i've always wanted a glass dip pen but i'm relieved to have fountain pen parts to fall back on too. the reviews on this pen have been positive too so i'm excited
ALSO it comes in such cute colors!! i really wanna get the marbled pink one...

What is your favorite pen filling mechanism 👀 i just figured out pistons and im in luv
i also love piston fill mechanisms!! all my cartridge pens get converters cus they're so much easier to clean when you can draw up ink and expel it. also cus i like having more choices of inks of course >:)
i think after that i like when a pen barrel can just be eyedropper filled, especially when they have a little silicone on the threading so they don't leak. the capacity is nice and they work great for those little sample vials of ink that are too small to be drawn up by a nib. ive got a majohn wancai mini in this cute bottle glass colour and the barrel looks so nice all full of ink!

Hey there, fountain pen ask here. The pen I squealed about is a Montblanc Heritage Rouge et Noir. There are several variants of it out there.
Before you ask, yes it does cost that much.
There is a copycat out here with a slightly different clip. It's called Majohn F9. I really recommend it, it's a lovely writer (the paint of mine is stripping though. Started early on.).
Thank you! I don't mind paying a bit for a nice fountain pen, it can be a nice treat for a special occasion someday 😊
