3. Favorite character? Least favorite?

Claire is my absolute favorite. I have a thing for assassins in media in general. You give me a series where at least half the cast are assassins in some right, you know I have many favorites already. Claire is just something else though. His solipsism is just so fascinating as is his sense of morality and justice. I also appreciate his relationship with Chane, and Chane is one of my favorites as well.

Also love the throwaway line that Claudia has in the cruise ship arc that insinuates Claire (in his 80s at the very least) is on a deep sea dive to get a sword from a sunken pirate ship for his and Chane's anniversary as a gift. It's just a perfect example of how the gears in his mind work. Also, get you a man who will dive to the bottom of the ocean for a pretty sword to give to you on your anniversary, apparently!

As for least favorite, right now it's that b-tch Melvi. Hate that guy right now. I'm sure something will happen in canon, and I'll wind up loving him, but right now, I hate him. Hate that I need the next volume but am not getting it because of the stupid Fate franchise. I also hate Fermet, but I feel like that's by design.

9. Character you’d like to see more of?

As much as I'd love to see more of Claire...and I would take any Claire morsels that I could be given...I honestly want to see more of Tick. We got backstory and stuff for him, but I wanna see more of him with the Gandors.

15. Which character makes you the most emotional?

I obviously have a soft spot for Czes, but honestly, the two characters that make me the most emotional are Miria and Maiza. I absolutely adore Miria, and the novel arc where she's separated from Isaac shows just how absolutely intelligent and grounded she really is. By the same token, it shows the same for Isaac. It gets me.

Then there's Maiza, who is just a solidly good guy, and the whole connections everyone has with him and that he maintains with everyone, including the fault he blames on himself, it just is very loaded and makes me feel things.

Baccano Week Day 5: The Cost of Immortality

i'll start off with my regular disclaimer that i generally tend to make these posts based purely on vibes and while i may not be correct in my assignments (only time will potentially tell) i generally am doing my best based on what i've seen on you/your blog.

that said, the very first character that popped into my mind for you was maiza avaro --- an alchemist from the 1700s who bears the burden of knowing how to make the liquor of immortality and the guilt of knowing that he essentially caused the deaths of many of his colleagues BECAUSE of this immortality. for the bulk of the story, which is set in the 1930's, maiza generally tries to put distance between himself and this past, but he's still pretty haunted by it since one of the people who died because of his choices was his somewhat-estranged younger brother (also because the demon he summoned to GET immortality is just kind of, like, sitting there chillin with him). anyway, just based off the fact that you write and enjoy caleb this was my most logical leap of character enjoyment.

i do like to give a few bonus "maybe, maybe not" assignments though that are less based in actual reasoning and more based on just potential vibes. anyway, those are: czeslaw meyer, mark wilmens, nile, and maybe tim.

one of my biggest pet peeves as melvi's possible biggest fan is when people misunderstand melvi from a logistical perspective. he looks like gretto, textually, because his dna is taken from lord avaro's still-immortal and eternally suffering self.

from a subtextual perspective he looks like gretto for the sake of making maiza violently ill and throwing him deeply off his game.

and from an even more subtextual perspective, his connections to the avaro and dormentaire families are no better than his connection to szilard quates. he shares nothing with them and benefits less as a "person" from having those connections than he would without them. his multiple inescapable connections to people serve only to remind him that his only worth is who he's "supposed" to be, and that who he is is nothing.
