Written for Baccano Week 2023 day 3: Resilience and Adversity :
Part 2 of Cigarette Smoke aka a heartwarming Eve&Dallas story, haha, is up on A03
It's like cigarette smoke. The taste burns in your lungs and stays long after the cigarette has been gone. Just like the past, it burns, it burns, it lingers and it hurts.

hc + 👎 dallas !
hc + 👎 for a headcanon about things they dislike
... i mean, what DOESN'T dallas dislike?
i think it would be redundant to talk about what he doesn't like for that reason, so i'll treat you to a headcanon about the feelings and experiences that drive that general dislike and hatred of almost everything in the world.
dallas sort of grew up as someone who wasn't really trusted with much and was generally considered the black sheep of his family because of his hard time reading sentences properly or understanding the functions of the family business. as such, his father often impressed into him an attitude like "no one will ever want you", something he internalized deeply and still feels now.
but he's not really a take-things-lying-down sort of person, so he ended up at a place that was like, "nobody has to like me, but i'm going to hate all of them back. i'll hate everyone but eve."
thematic headcanons. / accepting.

12, 23 ( if any ! )
12- the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them.
okay, so, this is NOT a twain answer or even a bsd answer.
my number one answer for this is actually dallas genoard from baccano!. and i know people who know are probably thinking, like "wtf why would more people like that guy" but i genuinely think he has some of the most interesting writing in all of baccano! and there's a lot surrounding the genoards' upbringing that can be extrapolated from the way that he acts. even aside from that, though, i also think that he's one of the only people baccano! presents as a downright terrible antagonist who shouldn't be rooted for that has an actual shot at recovering and becoming a better person given the right care and circumstances.
more to the point, he's actually an incredibly realistic portrayal of what can happen due to a combination of neglect and emotional abuse in households that might still be financially well-off. anyway. i don't know. i'll defend the character writing of dallas genoard until i die.
23- ship you've unwillingly come around to.
hmm. well. hm. it's hard because when i dislike something i tend to pretty STAUNCHLY dislike it so i'm not sure i've ever, like, REALLY come around to a ship i disliked at first.
i don't want to give no answer because that's boring so i guess i can stretch it a little. i was really neutral towards laddlua the first time i consumed baccano!; like, i just didn't care for their relationship. i wasn't one of the people who assumed it was abusive or anything but it just didn't speak to me. i liked it a little more after reading the novels but not much---it was only after like my second baccano! renaissance that i started to have this weird fondness for laddlua because i had developed a greater appreciation for the inherent romance in killing and being killed by the person you love.
i love being a hater. / accepting.

i love the baccano anime so much i really do but the fact that it removes dallas's sole redeeming scene prior to the slash has left a piece of my soul fractured beyond return.
i mean, seriously. his one connection to love and care and kindness is eve. he'd play billiards with her every day of the damn year if he could. watching the animated scene where he yells at her and tells her to stop praying is literally stomach twisting in the worst possible way.
#muse: dallas genoard#the ORIGINAL SCENE!!!!! the original novel version of the billiards scene!!!!! has him play with her ALL AFTERNOON#knowing fully well the shit he came back to the manor for was already gone!!!!#he knew that and he STILL TAUGHT HER TO PLAY BILLIARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What does the color blue make Dallas think of? How does it make him feel?
well, that's an interesting one. i'll have to put this one below the cut as it's spoilers for most of baccano! --- especially the first volume and the anime.
unprompted. / accepting.
dallas didn't used to have much of an opinion on the color blue, but now, specifically deep blues reminiscent of the color of water tend to make him feel sick to his stomach. he spent about 2 and a half to 3 years at the bottom of a river in an oil drum. sure, he didn't have the pleasure of seeing the color of the river most of the time, but even being reminded of his time down there makes him sick.
he doesn't have the same issue with lighter blues, though. he's pretty indifferent to those, as he is to most colors in general. he's not a guy who has lots of thoughts about colors.

dallas genoard is so far from your typical one-note dickish villain. first of all it's vaguely implied he came from a neglectful household in which he was discarded because he couldn't keep up with his business oriented family but that's not important. second of all he's NOT one-note specifically because of his feelings about eve; everything about his personality developed the way it did because he was raised seeing the world as evil but only eve as his shining light in the darkness as she was probably the only person who was ever kind to him. he goes out of his way to try and protect her and make her happy in every possible way---even him shirking the responsibility of the family is his misguided attempt to give her the best part of the deal even if eve herself doesn't know about his intentions and doesn't see it that way. he outright admits that he thinks he's too stupid to protect her in any way other than killing people and he very much does go to whatever extremes possible to make sure eve is safe. i think his connection to eve makes him extremely redeemable.

I'm going to spoil the biggest mystery of Baccano! "Where is Dallas Genoard?" It doesn't matter. He literally has no impact on the plot. The series just tricks you into thinking he's going to somehow tie everything together.
