summary : maisie ruiz is a well-accomplished ballet dancer for the royal ballet school in london and is about to dance in her final showcase. the twenty-two year old had her entire family there except for one special person, her boyfriend, mclaren formula 1 driver lando norris. however, maisie gets the biggest surprise of her life when she sees a familar face in the audience sitting next to her sister.

a/n : rewriting this again for lando norris just because i want to lol. i just love the idea of like lando or anyone really, going to a performance or what have you of their partner's, i just find it very cute so, here is my lando norris version

maisie ruiz was pretty much close to shitting herself. she was a ballerina with the royal ballet school in london and was moments from performing in her final summer showcase with the institution before leaving to focus on university in europe. she had been with the royal ballet school since she was two and now she was twenty-two, about to leave to study dance and history at a european university. the royal ballet school was all maisie knew, in the same way, that motorsports was the only thing that her boyfriend knew. and that was another thing, part of maisie's heart was breaking because whilst she had majority of her family there at her final showcase, she was missing her favourite person in the entire world, her boyfriend f1 racer, lando norris. this meant that because lando was currently somewhere in europe for  one of the grand prix's, it was unlikely that lando would be able to fly into london in time to see his girlfriend's final showcase. and, shockingly, because of lando's hectic schedule as an f1 racer, this would be the first time ever that he would be missing one of maisie's showcases because every other showcase, since maisie was nineteen and he was twenty-one, lando's not missed a single showcase of hers. and whilst it did break maisie's heart, she know of some dancers in her company, especially the male ballet dances, that had families or parents who had never seen any of their children perform in the showcases. so, in that aspect, maisie was lucky that it was only just this final showcase of hers that lando was missing out on. because, in all honesty, the showcase, like always, was being filmed and she could have him watch it later. so, in all honesty, maisie didn't feel too upset over the fact that lando wasn't able to see her final showcase, she just felt sad for those same dancers that once again had the belief that their families would change their minds and decide for once that they'd come to see their child perform. but she knew in the back of her mind, as did those dancers, that their families weren't ever going to change their minds.

maisie stood in her ballet costume for what was going to be her final ever dance in her final ever showcase with the royal ballet school moments before she was to walk to stage. and it really messed with her mind that she was going to be finishing her time at the school to then leave for university in europe to then return or maybe find a dance school in europe for the couple of years that she's there and then return back to the royal ballet school after that. i mean, with the money she had, that was absolutely doable for maisie but, as she really thought about it, was dance something she seriously wanted to do for the rest of her life? well, is ballet what she wants to be doing for the rest of her life as for as long as she could remember, she'd always wanted to be a ballroom dancer. so, maybe it was time for her to leave ballet entirely and find a ballroom dancing company and finally make her dream come true of becoming a ballroom dancer. i mean, it would hurt a lot less wearing la duca's then it would wearing pointe shoes and dancing on the tips of her toes.

maisie then started some last-minute stretches so her body was warmed up for the variation she was about to do with her male partner, nicholas. looking at him from her backstage wing and across the stage to his wing, they started to make funny faces at each other. purely, just to pass time as waiting in the wings could be for as short as a couple of minutes to as long as twenty to thirty minutes at a showcase because things can run late or early. it was really unpredictable so what else could the ballerinas do to past the time but make silly faces at each other and make each other laugh. especially when maisie and only two other ballerinas were moving on from the company, there was also a wave of the rest of the company wanting to make sure the ballerinas that were leaving were happy and not feeling too upset over the fact that this is their final showcase.

then, out of nowhere, one of her ballet friends came up behind her, wrapping her arms around maisie. violet, the girl who was behind maisie, rested her head on maisie's shoulder and then started whispering to her.

"...i'm so sad that after tonight's showcase, you're leaving us!" violet whispered sadly as maisie smiled

"i know violet, i'm sorry but, it's time for me to move on! as much as i've loved being a ballerina, i don't think i could do it forever. i'm honestly surprised that i didn't leave for university earlier," maisie sighed as violet smiled as she nodded her head

"and i can't be mad at you for that. i'm glad you are aware that you can't be a ballerina forever and you're honouring that. whereas, if i tried to do that, i think my whole family, not just my parents, would disown me because i was literally born into ballet like. i swear to god, i came out of my mother's womb with a fucking tutu and pointe shoes," violet sighed as maisie had to try hard to not burst out loudly into laughter even though she knew her family weren't joking

like, she felt bad at how much her family forced violet to be a ballerina because all of the women in violet's family... all of the women were ballerinas and if they did try to not continue the legacy, the girl would seriously be disowened and shunned as though they were an awful person.

"wait, you're actually serious?" maisie whispered as violet giggled and shook her head

"no, i'm totally joking, cause i spoke to my mom and told her i'm also seriously thinking about leaving rbs as well. and like you, i can't be a ballerina forever and she shockingly agreed and said she knew this was the conversation we were going to have. and then she started apologising that she forced me into ballet in the same way she was forced into it by her mom and for continuing the tradition instead of asking me if that is what i really wanted. so, i thought that was sweet of mom for respecting that whilst i have been a ballerina for basically my whole life, that i can't continue doing it forever and there has to be a time that i retire," violet smiled as maisie smiled for her best friend as well

"oh my gosh, i was going to say! if she disowned you, i'm sure my parents and family would love to adopt you!" maisie giggled as did violet as violet then quickly had to leave since maisie's partner was signaling to them that their variation was about to start

as the music for maisie and her partner, nicholas, started to play, they made their entrance onto the stage and got into their places ready for the variation. the variation was a colourful one so maisie was wearing a very vibrant and colourful tutu since all her other variations were very mellow and less colourful.

as she and nicholas danced together, they smiled when they had to, they kept a straight face when they had to. and then, as nicholas started to turn maisie so she could then be led into a arabesque. and, as he did that, this was the first time that maisie could actually look out into the audience and, when she did, she nearly had a heart attack. right in the middle of the royal opera house was maise's boyfriend lando norris. but then, as she looked further down the row of seats, she saw his fellow mclaren driver, oscar piastri & his girlfriend lily alongside daniel riccardo & his girlfriend heidi, charles leclerc & his girlfriend alexandra saint mleux as well as max verstappen & his girlfriend kelly. and as soon as maisie saw them there, watching her dance at her last ever showcase, she couldn't help the huge smile that spread across her face.

but, this confused nicholas so, he whispered, "...you okay?" it was a shock that no one in the audience ever took notice when the ballerinas would talk to one another during a performance

because, guess what, it does actually happen since the dancers aren't wired up with microphones so, it's never audible what the ballerinas are talking about.

"yeah...nicky, lando's here and so are some of the other racers and their girlfriends! i was told that lando was able to make it in time, let alone the others!" maisie whispered back as nicholas then smiled for his partner as he remembered how upset she was when she got all the calls and messages saying they weren't able to make it

"well, lando will always find a way to see his girlfriend every single time!" nicholas whispered back as maisie smiled and gave him a look since she couldn't exactly nod her head

"he really does," maisie whispered back before they ended their conversation and continued their variation in silence again

then their variation became dramatic as their music started to swell and become more intense itself and the audience were on the edge of their seats as they watched what was happening. the music started to crescendo which meant nicholas had to lead maisie through a dozen turns before he'd have to let her go as she continued the turns on her own.

the crowd sat in pure silence and most likely holding their breath as nicholas began to lead maisie in the turn sequence before not even three turns into the sequence, he lets her go as maisie begins to quicken the paces of the turns. since these dozen or so turns were the beginning of the final act of the variation, nicholas exited the stage but remained in the wings so he could then reenter and bow with maisie at the end of the dance since she goes into the ending pose on her own.

maisie continued to turn for four more counts of the song before it began it's coda and ended entirely. as maisie turned and then lowered herself into her ending pose on the floor, the audience was silent for an entire two minutes because of how shocked they were. maisie could hear herself breathe as she waited for the applause so she could stand back up and invite nicholas back on stage to bow and truly finish the variation off together. and it was in that moment that maisie thought that that the audience finally started applauding. but, not only that, they gave maisie and nicholas a standing ovation as maisie stood up and lifted her head, she smiled as she made eye contact with lando. it was clear he and the rest of the audience were blown away as maisie held her hand out for nicholas as he tip toed back onto the stage.

as they bowed, violet and the leader of the company, miss raine, then walked onto stage to present a flower bouquet to maisie since she was one of three ballerinas leaving and they were all being presented with bouquets before all being farewelled at the end of the showcase. which, was now since maisie and nicholas' variation was the final one of the showcase. so alongside violet and miss raine, the other two ballerinas, two other lovely women ballerinas had joined them on stage as nicholas had exited the stage back to the wings.

"...ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for tonight and being here for our final showcase at the royal ballet school for 2024. however, just before we leave, we have three beautiful ballerinas that are leaving us at the end of this showcase! and, to pay tribute to them, i'd like to introduce you all to them and say a few words because all three of these young ladies are beautiful ballerinas and it's a loss to us at royal ballet that we're losing them..." miss raine announced as the audience cheered and applauded before quietening down so miss raine could continue

"...so, to the very far left, we have arabella la fontaine who is one of our departing ballerinas. she is our most senior ballerina at twenty-six since most of our ballerinas at this company will retire when they are twenty-four/twenty-five and move on to more prestigious ballet companies unless they have other reasons to leave. so, arabella has been with our company since she was maybe twelve years old so, she's been with us for very many years and it's been an absolute joy and honour to work with her so it makes me even more proud to see her leave and spread her wings out further. but, don't worry, arabella hasn't left the royal ballet completely because whilst she's stopped dancing as a ballerina with the company, that doesn't mean she's stopped entirely. and the reason is, for those wondering, arabella is actually pregnant with her first baby and is about to go on maternity leave and when she returns, she'll be returning as one of our dance teachers that will be teaching our junior dance program. thank you so much for you commitment to the royal ballet school, arabella, we love and appreciate you so much! so, arabella la fontaine, everybody!" miss raine speaks as everyone applauds for arabella, including maisie as everyone cheered at the mention that she was pregnant with her first baby and that being the reason why she was retiring

"next to arabella, we have her sister anastasia la fontaine who is another one of our departing ballerinas. she is our second eldest ballerina at twenty-four and unlike her sister, arabella, anastasia is not pregnant *giggles* but she is retiring and does not plan to return to the royal ballet as a teacher. but, she is leaving to spend more time with her family since she does have step-children with her lovely partner that are still young and need to have their step-mom taking care of them. like her sister, anastasia is a beautiful ballerina and it is sad that she's leaving but, i'm sure it won't be too long until one of her step-kids is brought into the studios to take some dance lessons with aunty arabella *giggles*. thank you so much, anastasia, for your continious commitment to the royal ballet since you've also been with us since you were eleven or twelve. anastasia la fontaine, everybody!" miss raine holds her hand out as anastasia curtseys with her flower boquet in her hands as she smiles before stepping back in line

and now, it suddenly became real for maisie that she was actually leaving and she was the youngest in the entire company that wasn't the children's division of the royal ballet school. miss raine then became teary-eyed since everyone knew how much miss raine adored maisie and knew how devastated she was when maisie told her that she would be leaving alongside arabella and anastasia.

"next to anastasia, is our final ballerina that is leaving us. and this ballerina is a very special ballerina and everyone here at the royal ballet absolutely adores her, she's a very special little lady to us. her name is maisie ruiz and she is our youngest ever ballerina in this specific senior company of the royal ballet and our youngest ever prima ballerina. she is just twenty-two-years-old and she has been with us since she was two-years-old. for the first eight years, she was living with her parents until they got busy with work that they couldn't look after her. so, from eight to around about sixteen or seventeen, she actually lived with anastasia and her partner before she was able to buy her first apartment on her own that she moved into with her dance partner nicholas and violet. everyone in the company knows i have a very large soft spot for maisie and i'm absolutely devastated that maisie's leaving but i can only be proud of her because of how fantastic she is as a ballerina but as a dancer overall. she is not just a ballerina, her biggest dream is to become a ballroom dancer so, whilst she is leaving us to go to university in europe and to support her boyfriend who is in formula 1, i have no doubt that she'll learn ballroom in europe and then return back to either london or her boyfriend's hometown of bristol and become a very famous, well-known ballroom dancer. so, maisie, you know we all love you here at the royal ballet, whilst we know it's most likely never going to happen, please do think about coming back to visit us or even teach an intensive or two. we all miss you already and we are so glad you have been a ballerina with us for so many years. maisie ruiz, everybody!" miss raine's voice cracks at points as maisie tip toes forward and curtseys with her flower bouquet in hand before stepping back as miss raine pulls her in for a hug that eventually arabella, anastasia and violet join

the audience is loud and appreciative of the show they saw as well as giving love to the three ballerinas who were leaving. then, the curtains decsended from the ceiling to the floor and the rest of the senior company of the royal ballet school stormed the stage to farewell their three departing ballerinas. then, the families of arabella, anastasia and maisie were welcomed to the stage as well. and, it was in this moment that maisie's emotions got the better of her, the moment where she saw her boyfriend lando and the rest of the formula 1 grid and their girlfriends.

"...lan!" maisie's voice faltered as she tip toed over to her boyfriend, still in her ballerina costume and makeup as lando opened his arms wide whilst the others waited excitedly but patiently behind their friends

"hey honey, you did amazing!" lando whispered as he squeezed his girlfriend in his arms as the ballerinas around the couple just watched or minded their own business and attempted to find their own families from behind the curtain

"i thought you couldn't make it tonight!" maisie whimpered as she giggled, looking in front of her to see penelope, kelly and max's little one begging silently to be picked up (and because she couldn't resist playing with aunty maisie's bright blue sparkly tutu) 

breaking out of the hug so maisie could pick up penelope comfortably, lando smiled his cheeky grin, "yeah, that was just a little white lie to confuse and convince you into thinking i wasn't here in london," lando smirked as maisie shook her head, she should know her boyfriend by now

"what about the grand prix? i thought it was in france, no?" maisie asked as she lovingly looked at her niece as she played with the skirt of the tutu

"yeah, it's in france but, today we had a day off because i made it be a day off cause i could never ever miss the love of my life's showcase, let alone her final one, with her ballet company!" lando smiled as maisie shook her head as she smiled at the rest of the grid and wags who had made it

after many hugs and kisses and tears and kids running everywhere, it was eventually home time and maisie allowed everyone to come over to her house (yes, house, she now has a house in london, not an apartment). only because it was easier and better than all of them convening in the hotel that they were staying at for the grand prix that was in france. it was after a shower and changing out of her costume and washing off her makeup that maisie decided to post about her final ballet showcase since she knew that if she left it any later, it would make her more upset.

maisiecollins twenty-one years royal ballet school, what a time it's been 🩰. cannot believe i won't be a ballerina with you guys anymore but it is time i hang up my pointe shoes and tutus. it was an absolute dream to dance with you guys and now that this dream is complete, it's time i complete my other dreams which include university in europe and becoming a ballroom dancer. all of these photos have been from my final couple weeks being a royal ballet school ballerina and there's a whole lot more from just tonight so it's probably going to be posted by lando so, look out for those photos or he may just post one! now, it's come to the time where i need to thank my fellow ballerinas! so, arabella and anastasia, the two lovely ballerinas that are departing rbs alongside me, it was a pleasure to dance alongside you two since you guys are forces of nature in this profession and it's insane how talented y'all are. i love you both dearly, especially since anastasia actually was my guardian from eight to sixteen years of age as an rbs ballerina and i cannot thank you enough for doing that since my parents weren't able to leave work to just take care of me whilst i danced there. to my various ballet partners but most especially my most recent one, nicholas, i absolutely adore you my darling! you too are a force of nature and i cannot wait to see you continue to thrive and blossom as an rbs ballerina since i know you've got at least another two maybe three years left in you. but, in saying that, if you do leave rbs before then, come to europe and become my ballroom dance partner so we can continue to dance together since i absolutely adore dancing with you, you make me feel so safe and comfortable and you just know exactly how to be a leader and i love you forever and ever. violet, my darling beautiful lovely cinnamon doughnut, yes, you're older than me by literally three months but that doesn't mean i can't be a mother to you. whilst i'm sad i've left you this early, i cannot wait to be in that audience and hand you your bouquet of flowers after your final performance! you have made me laugh, cry, go most likely clincally insane, and made me the happiest girl in the entire world because of our friendship. we met when we were two and i knew straight away that you were going to be my person and that still hasn't changed all these years later. and, of course, i have to thank our wonderful headmistress of rbs, miss raine who has been the most wonderful, lovely, kind, loving headmistress in the world of ballet schools. i honestly don't think i've met a kinder headmistress than miss raine. everyone i've mentioned and those i haven't, you all are the lights of my life and i love you all and wish to all dance with you again in the future but, right now, it's time to say goodbye. also, i just want to give the biggest thank you and love to the love of my life lando and the rest of the formula 1 grid and wags who surprised me because i had no idea that they were even in london until i saw them during me and nicholas' variation which was the final variation of the evening. so, how i didn't realise until the literal final variation beats me but, i cannot thank my family enough for how supportive they've been in allowing me to literally move so many times when i wasn't even old enough to be doing it at the age i was and for allowing me to pursue my dreams, i love and appreciate you so much 🤍

This is completely fuled by the amber lounge on Friday. You have ∞€ and 1 day to get 6 drives fashion show ready. To which shops would you drag them? And which drivers would get a make over?

Anonymoose, this is an excellent question and I spent A LOT of time thinking about this. Partly because @renaultz and I have a shared agenda and would like to see teams do a proper haute couture sponsorship at some point. And also because Amber Lounge never ceases to cause 100000% damage every single year so I relish a chance to put that right.

Waffling aside I have picked my 6 drivers and not only where I would take them but what outfits I would want them to wear. My drivers: JEV, Alex Lynn, Naomi Schiff, Catie Munnings, Pascal Wehrlein and Sebastian Vettel.

I'm putting the rest of this under the cut because it's gonna have photos.

First up is JEV, so I wrote a little fic about him wearing haute couture and haven't stopped thinking about the outfit I put him in ever since. SO, I would take JEV to Dior and I would put him in the outfit I described in the fic. Which is THIS:

Next up: Alex Lynn. So I think we can all agree that Alex is gorgeous and he usually wears great suits and just general great casual stuff (thank u Alex for having some taste and wearing it well). I would also take him to Dior, because I am obsessed with their spring/summer collection I can't lie. And I would put him in THIS outfit:

I would accessorise it differently but I think he could really make it work, like with this outfit and the one I would style JEV in they both have this brilliant blend of femininity and androgyny that I think would just work really well on both of them.

Naomi Schiff is up next, and she is alway so incredibly stylish and I would love to see her in a tailored suit of some kind (also thnx to Percy for giving me that brainworm). So I would take Naomi to Dolce & Gabbana and get her fitted for THIS suit:

I wouldn't put her in a white shirt though, I'd probably go for a darker neutral colour (just because I think the white shirt doesn't really pop with it) and then style her with some snazzy DMs OR heels - whichever she preferred.

On to Catie Munnings! I really can't decide which of these outfits I would put her in BUT I would take her to Zuhair Murad (I adore his work so much, especially his wedding dresses like holy shittttt) and would choose either of these outfits:

And for once I don't totally hate the whole feathers of it all, right now I think I'm more leaning towards the white one.

For Pascal I would wanna go kinda bold and funky, because he's quite a bold and funky guy and I don't think he's really afraid of wearing out there stuff if it's stylish. So I would take him to Elie Saab and put him in a variation of THIS outfit:

I don't LOVE the cape or shoulders but I do love the rest of it and I dunno I feel like Pascal would look groovy in this. PLUS we are going all out here fellas.

Lastly we have Sebastian Vettel, so as we all know Seb pretends he's not gorgeous and has questionable fashion choices at best and I literally just want to take him shopping and be like 'please don't be afraid to wear clothes that make you look good' (he seems to be doing something about his trouser situation at the moment though so thank u Seb). ANYWAY, I would want to take him to Dolce and Gabbana as well and I would go for something a little more lowkey in the out there scale (because I think he would probably run away if not). So I'm digging the idea of him in some variation of THIS:

Potentially not the same colour and probably without the waistcoat, and then I would probably go for a little bit of a colourful but classy shirt to spice it up a little bit.

ANYWAY, as you can see if I was an Amber Lounge stylist we would kill the brief every time AND I would also encourage and challenge them.

REACHING OUT TO REFUGEES

A. Lange & Söhne has come up with a creatively charitable way to help integrate migrants into German society. For the past year, it has been implementing a programme to recruit young refugees for its manufacture in Glashütte.

“We wanted to contribute to the German humanitarian effort by finding a way to give young refugees a chance to become watchmakers,” said Wilhelm Schmid, chief executive of A. Lange & Söhne.

The company hopes to recruit five people, aged 18 to 26, into its one-year language programme, to be followed by an immersive placement in the manufacture. “We need people who are curious, eager to learn, and want to take a chance with us,” said Schmid. The program comes at a cost to A. Lange & Söhne of €25,000 to €40,000 per  candidate, who, in turn, must commit to staying long term, learning the language, and have the desire to integrate.

SUPPORT FOR THE BRAVEST DOCTORS

Since 2012, when Nomos Glashütte first launched its collaboration with Doctors Without Borders, the German brand has raised over $500,000 for the international humanitarian organization. Targeting an even $1million, the charitable oeuvre continues with new especially designed, limited-edition timepieces. Nomos and its retailers have, as before, pledged to donate $100 to the NGO for each watch sold. 

The project started in Germany with two special collections based on two of its iconic mechanical models, the Tangente (below) and the Tetra. Each watch bore the engraving “Doctors  Without Borders” on the dial below the six o’clock marker. Given the success of the original German series, now sold out, Nomos extended its programme to the UK and the US, where it is offering six differently sized models. The special edition models retail between £1,240 to £1,460 in the UK and $1,960 to $2,330 in the US.

BELL & ROSS

Bell & Ross has added racing car drivers to its list of professional users and named Carmen Jordá, 28, who is also a model, as ambassador for its new ladies’ line. Though not considered a “serious” contender by her peers, Ms Jordá, who is Spanish, and the daughter of racing driver José Miguel Jordá, is a racing car and development driver for Renault’s F1 Team.

BREMONT

The British brand Bremont has announced the British adventurer and rower Olly Hicks as its new ambassador. Having just embarked on the world’s first documented kayak crossing from Greenland to Scotland, a 1,200- mile perilous journey known as the Wake Of The Finnmen, Hicks is planning to take on the Southern Ocean next December where he will attempt to row the world solo.

CHANEL

French actor Gaspard Ulliel, the face of perfume line Bleu de Chanel, is now the ambassador for Chanel’s first men’s watch, Monsieur de Chanel.

PIAGET

Piaget has picked the award-winning Canadian actor and producer Ryan Reynolds, as international male brand ambassador for Piaget watches. Mr Reynolds, 39, delighted television audiences as Michael Bergen on the hit ABC sitcom Two Guys and a Girl.

HUBLOT On the cultural side, Hublot welcomed Lang Lang (above), the international piano sensation, as its brand ambassador. Last May, the Chinese classical pianist gave an exclusive private performance to mark the opening of Hublot’s new boutique on Fifth Avenue in New York. Proceeds from the shopping event went to charity.

RICHARD MILLE RM will welcome a new German partner, the young tennis player Alexander Zverev. The record-setting and spectacular performances of the 19-year-old prodigy echo those of Rafael Nadal, a familiar figure to Richard Mille. The right-handed Mr Zverev will henceforth be playing with a Richard Mille RM 27-01 on his wrist, a timepiece developed with Mr Nadal that boasts a tourbillon calibre suspended by cables capable of resisting accelerations of up to 5,000Gs.

ITALIAN HIGHLIGHTS

Bulgari in Rome

Last June, Bulgari’s chief executive, Jean-Christophe Babin, flanked by Francesco Prosperetti, superintendent of Rome’s Coliseum, jointly unveiled the newly restored mosaic floors of the western gymnasium of the Terme di Caracalla, now on view to the public thanks to a generous donation by Bulgari. The geometric shapes that decorate the Terme di Caracalla mosaics, specifically their ancient “fan” design, have been a central motif in Bulgari’s Divas’ Dream collections (above).

Chanel in Venice

Chanel is hosting an exhibition entitled The Woman Who Reads at the Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art in Venice (until January 8). Part of a programme known as Culture Chanel, the new show will explore Mademoiselle Chanel’s creative world from the perspective of her relationship to books and reading, including to authors whose works left a mark on her life and shaped her personality, namely Plato and Virgil, Cervantes and Jean Cocteau.

NYC CARTIER REOPENS

This September, following two years of renovation, the historic boutique at 653 Fifth Avenue, Cartier’s first in New York, will reopen. It will be the largest Cartier store to date, spanning six floors, with an archive and workshop. The “New York mansion” is also known as the “house bought for a necklace”. It was reportedly acquired by Pierre Cartier in 1917 in exchange for $100 and a double-strand necklace of 128 natural pearls, which was coveted by Lady Maisie, who was married to Morton F. Plant, the previous owner of the building.

CHANEL’S HIGH CALIBRE MALE

The big news for Chanel at Baselworld 2016 was the launch of Monsieur, the luxury house’s very first men’s watch. Five years in development, the house announced that the Calibre 1, which features an instantaneous jumping hour and minute retrograde complications, was also the first movement “designed, developed, reliability checked and assembled by Chanel”. The manual-winding movement is made up of 170 components, with integrated complications. Managing to be both traditional and contemporary in appearance, the timepiece features two circular skeletonized bridges. Inside, alternating matte and glossy black surfaces decorate the movement in “amorphous diamond-like carbon”, a high-performance coating. A lion, a recurrent motif for Chanel (above), decorates the buckle and crown.

PARIS BIENNALE

This year’s Biennale des Antiquaires, the prestigious art and antiques fair taking place in September at the Grand Palais in Paris, is noticeably different to previous years. Though a greater number of exhibitors are taking part, a multimillion-dollar antiques forgery scandal has caused some dealers to pull out. Conspicuously absent names include Cartier, Graff Diamonds, Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron, Dior and Chaumet. The fair will also feature a significantly reduced roster of high jewellery and watch brands, but the Geneva-based De Grisogono, not quite a newcomer given its last appearance in 2008, is participating, the company confirms. A spokesperson for the brand confirmed that De Grisogono had decided to return this year despite the pre-opening commotion, because its founder Fawaz Gruosi “does not follow the crowd”.

DIOR BOUTIQUES

A new Dior boutique opened in June on New Bond Street in London, a milestone for the brand in the UK. To mark the occasion, Dior created two collections of watches, each drawing inspiration from the colours of the British flag. The smaller D de Dior Précieuse timepiece is subtly paved with diamonds, its case embellished with a bezel set in rubies for the red version, or sapphires for the blue. The Dior VIII Grand Bal Plissé Soleil timepieces are designed to evoke a ballgown in the colours of the Union flag. They comes in two editions, limited to eight timepieces each. Both editions are encased in polished pink gold, each embellished in either red rubies or blue sapphires and both equipped with the maison’s Dior Inversé 11 1/2” calibre which features the oscillating weight on the dial decorated with mother-of-pearl marquetry. In late September, Dior opens a new boutique in Paris opposite the flagship store at the corner of Avenue Montaigne and Rue François-1er.

IWC - Bursary

IWC Schaffhausen announced the launch of its annual Filmmakers’ Bursary Award in March, in association with the British Film Institute. The award, which includes a £50,000 prize, will be handed out on October 4 at the IWC Gala Dinner to an outstanding British writer or director whose first or second feature-length fiction film premieres at the 2016 London Film Festival. The award will help future development in filmmaking. IWC’s role as official time partner of the British Film Institute and the London Film Festival will continue until 2019.

SPORTING GREATS

LONGINES - racing

Longines begins the horseracing season as official timekeeper of the Qatar Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe, a thoroughbred race at the Hippodrome de Chantilly on October 2, ahead of the horse-jumping event the Longines Masters of Paris, in Villepinte, in December.

TAG Heuer: surfing 

TAG Heuer has partnered with the World Surf League to serve as official timekeeper of the Big Wave Tour. The surfing event began with the Puerto Escondido Challenge in June with TAG’s brand ambassador, the American surfer Kai Lenny (below), sporting the Aquaracer 300M to promote the brand’s Don’t Crack Under Pressure campaign. The Tour will travel to Chile, Peru, Oregon, Punta Galea, the Basque country in Spain and Hawaii, before reaching Todos Santos in Mexico.

TUDOR - motorsports

This month, the Historic Grand Prix held in Zandvoort brings together race-ready classic cars for a spin around the Dutch circuit with Tudor as the official sponsor. Tudor’s love affair with motorsport dates back to 1970’s Tudor Oysterdate, also referred to as “Homeplate,” a design it revisited in 2010.

ZENITH - motorcycling

On September 25, more than 38,000 smartly dressed gentlemen will straddle their café racers, bobbers, scramblers and other custom motorcycles in 470 cities to partake in The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride and help fund research for prostate cancer, with Zenith as official timekeeper. To celebrate this partnership, Zenith has produced a timepiece called the Heritage Pilot Ton-Up. Bring a helmet.

CULTURAL CONCERNS

Montblanc

Montblanc’s Cultural Foundation has named the independent curatorial team of Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath (above right) as co-heads. Bardaouil and Fellrath will be in charge of developing cultural initiatives for the Foundation, and overseeing the Montblanc Arts Patronage award that, this year, will honour Sir John and Lady Sorrell for their contribution to the Sorrell Foundation, which works to inspire creativity in children. Sir John, chairman of University of the Arts London, and Lady Sorrell, Chancellor of the University of Westminster, have, since 1999, developed a programme that connects schoolchildren with mentors.

Panerai at the V&A Museum

The Italian watchmaker Panerai is collaborating with design duo Glithero, founded by Tim Simpson and Sarah van Gameren, to bring to life a mesmerizing, time-based mechanical installation at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, from September 17 to 25. The interactive installation, titled The Green Room, will occupy a stairwell of the museum, and will emulate the circular motion of the arms of a clock, using veils of colorful string to create an ever-changing optical effect suggestive of time itself.

ZENITH  - Cuban legend

Zenith is celebrating the 50th anniversary of legendary Cuban cigar brand Cohiba with its El Primero Chronomaster 1969 Cohiba Edition (above), a limited edition of the iconic El Primero chronograph, with 50 watches in rose gold and 500 in stainless steel, adorned in glossy chestnut reminiscent of the amber colour of Cohiba cigars. From 1966 to 1982, cigars made by Cohiba were exclusively used for institutional gifts from the Cuban government to foreign statesmen and diplomats. Christened Cohiba in 1966 and registered in 1969, the name came from a term used by Taíno Indians to describe rolls of tobacco leaves—the ancestors of cigars. In a nod to the ultimate cigar, Zenith’s El Primero Chronomaster 1969 Cohiba Edition has a Havana-brown dial spanned with the distinctive vertical lines of the Cuban brand, including the famous profile of an aboriginal chief, Cohiba’s emblem.

GPHG - A woman’s vision

The Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève will take place this year on November 10. With the Grand Théâtre undergoing a two-year renovation, the ceremony will be held at the Théâtre du Léman (below) in Geneva’s Grand Hotel Kempinsky. The jury will be presided again by Aurel Bacs, co-founder of Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo. Of note is the presence of six women on a roster of 25 jurors, up from three, including French fashion designer Chantal Thomass, publisher and journalist Heekyung Jung, and Swiss entrepreneur Tina Zegg. “We thought it was essential to bring a feminine viewpoint to the GPHG,” said director Carine Maillard. “There are categories in which a woman’s perspective is important.”

CORUM - DJ style

Corum has embarked on a collaboration with Steve Aoki (above), the Grammy-nominated DJ and founder of the record label Dim Mak. Mr Aoki has designed a new version of Corum’s iconic Bubble wristwatch expected to go on sale soon. It is, according to Davide Traxler, Corum’s chief executive, an “electrifying vision of the Bubble”. The venture comes hot on the heels of another musical collaboration with cymbal-makers Paiste, the favourite of groups such as Deep Purple and Pink Floyd.
