Foodie Friday: Checked out an arepas spot called Mais Arepas during my mini vacay in NOLA back in May. It's a hidden gem in a neighborhood by the hotel we stayed at, Hotel Modern. I recommend the carnicera, which is an arepa with grilled steak, red bean spread, avocado, and plantains. It's a great place for lunch or for eats after a long night of drinking and partying. 😁

One of the greatest things about #MaisArepas is the excellent intersection of creativity and tradition. Today, Chef David Mantilla tucked grilled shrimp, handmade chorizo, peppers and achiote into a inky black arepa; a sharp jalapeno sauce is suggested to drizzle or douse. Squid ink tossed with tapioca pearls is deep-fried to become crackly, bubbly, light-as-air chips. Tonight @maisarepas' Chef David gave me a chontaduro (peach palm fruit) to try. This small, persimmon-shaped, dark orange fruit has a distinct smell that made me think of ketchup. The pulp is fibrous, with a starchy texture and savory, slightly sweet taste reminiscent of butternut squash. As directed, I peeled the chontaduro and ate it with a sprinkle of salt and a bit of honey. It was surprisingly nice! Said to be an aphrodisiac, chontaduro also has as much protein as eggs, vitamins, zinc, copper, calcium, iron, beta-carotene and is believed to help lower cholesterol with a punch of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.
