Fringe Encore: Precinct - An Improvised Cop Comedy

“Oh My God! My stomach hurts from too much laughing”

These were the first words out of my mouth after the show. There is not a moment during the whole performance that I stopped laughing. The actors were Amazing with a capital ‘A’. I have never seen any type of improv and I now deeply regret it. I have been missing out on a good laugh. 

When I first got there, ‘there’ was in a part of town that I honestly had never been to before. MainLine Theatre is this small door that once opened, leads you up a pretty shaky staircase into the weirdest little “salon” ever. There were mismatched second, maybe even third-hand couches and a scary as hell work of art (see below) that was staring at me during the full 22 minutes I waited for the show to start. We were then taken in to a room with chairs and an almost empty stage. The items in front of us were a desk, an old rotary dial phone and a chair. The show stars Andy Assaf, Jason Grimmer, and Dimitri Kyres. The story begins with the audience. They ask a person from the viewers to tell them where he or she is from and from that point on, they base the rest of the performance on that little bit of information. The audience (perhaps even the actors themselves), does not know which direction the story will go. What we do know is that it’s somewhere in the Montreal Plateau. When I was there, it was about a corrupted mayor, a bad cop trying to be good and a good cop trying to figure out who the killer is. The actors were having as much trouble staying serious as the audience was. A lot of laughter ensued and maybe even a little crying (the abs were having a good workout). 

What I liked was the pure imaginative quality of the whole performance. With a few simple props, the actors were able to build a world that the audience could easily imagine. The setting was invisible but yet unquestionably there. The actors that were not taking place in the direct action were giving suggestions, directing the play and even providing sound effects and background noises.  The repartees between the ‘cops’ were hilarious and witty. On the spot thinking like I have never seen before.
