here's what I've learned to never pay full price for, because people are giving these items away for free or almost free on Craigslist, Nextdoor, Facebook, at Goodwill, and on eBay (which has a local pickup section) in every sufficiently populated location in the USA.
cost of acquiring these items ranges from "carrying it home from the sidewalk" to "getting a friend with a car to help you pick it up" which is the same amount of effort as going to IKEA for worse quality that costs more, with the notable exception of it being a pain in the ass to coordinate with craigslist sellers, and you often have to wait and watch for what you want to actually show up. it took me about a year to find an acceptable gamer chair left out on the sidewalk, for example. but they cost $100+ new, so I chose to wait.
a lot of this stuff is the kind of thing you don't necessarily intend to keep, just to use in transitional housing or until you can afford a better one.
1. printers of any kind. basic office inkjets are free. ink is easily refillable or has generic ink cartridges way cheaper than brand name for any inkjet up to about 2015, not sure how difficult the newer smart printers are to hack but there's no reason to own a newer one because printing technology has not improved since about 2005. you want a color laser for making zines and wheatpastes? it's on Craigslist RN and someone's mom is desperate to get rid of it
2. bedframes
3. desks
4. tables
5. chairs
6. bookshelves, nice oak bookshelves that don't bend like al dente spaghetti when you put books on them, are rotting on sidewalks rn because they didn't fit in someone's house. go get them
7. scanners. I find a working scanner by a dumpster at least once a quarter, and I don't pick them up because I already have one that I picked up from a dumpster years ago
8. hot tubs. everyone thinks they want a hot tub and that the maintenance and upkeep will be worth it, and they are wrong. Craigslist.
9. sofas, with the caveat that if you are in a bedbug region like New York State you need to be very confident in your bedbug screening skills
10. quality leather shoes. these last forever and are expensive new. eBay is best for these
11. plates, glassware, silverware. all of these are able to be sterilized to whatever standard you feel comfortable with but if you eat in restaurants you've already put a fork in your mouth that hundreds of people have drooled on so try not to fool yourself
12. televisions and computer monitors
13. houseplants. similar to the bedbug warning above, you need to screen these for pests like fungus gnats and mealybugs
14. dressers, wardrobes, china hutches, cabinets, chests of drawers, etc
15. mirrors
16. clothes hangers
17. moving boxes
18. mattresses to a certain extent. I don't like secondhand used mattresses but unstained, unused mattresses are surprisingly common, especially since the foam mail order mattress boom started and people keep getting told by the mattress companies to just get rid of/keep any mattresses they want to return for flaws or wrong sizes or whatever. bedbug warning on this obviously
19. sheets and towels. you gotta launder them obviously
20. basic clothing, especially for kids. normie type clothing is so numerous people often just throw them away because they can't get anyone to take them
21. kitchenware like cooking utensils and pots n pans. don't use chipped or scratched Teflon/nonstick if you can help it. everyone needs one basic steel chef knife, which can be sharpened and maintained indefinitely. people throw these away CONSTANTLY
22. household consumables like laundry soap and dish soap. people often accidentally buy the wrong brand, scent, or develop allergies and want to get rid of extra
23. pet supplies like collars, leashes, dog crates, litter boxes, litter itself, dog beds, toys, carriers, etc
24. medical equipment of all kinds. people who take care of all kinds of patients end up with tons of leftover, sealed, miscellaneous stuff when that person recovers or dies, and they often give it away. adult diapers, hospital beds, IV stands, crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, fracture boots and splints, knee braces, canes, catheter packs, ice packs, heat packs, sterile paper sheeting, gauze, slings, over-the-door stretching and rehab pulleys, mattress protectors, etc
25. washers and dryers, both the basic household cube type and the small twin tub or rock tumbler type. people upgrade these when the old ones are still working, just squeaky or a little weird or sometimes just old
26. vacuum cleaners. secondhand ones are sort of icky but you can get rid of the ickiness by wiping them down with a rag and isopropyl alcohol inside and out. use an exacto or utility knife to slice off the hair and string wrapped around the roller. buy a new filter on Amazon. people throw away vacuums that work perfectly all the time because they don't actually know how to clean them out or do maintenance. bedbug and pet hair warning obviously
27. microwaves
28. refrigerators
30. lamps
31. any kind of exercise equipment including stationary bikes, ellipticals and weights/weight benches
32. any kind of piano. there's a grand on my local Craigslist for free rn
33. scrap wood and lumber
34. pallets
35. wood shipping crates
36. newborn, toddler and baby equipment like breast milk pumps and storage, bottles, bottle racks, diapers, etc. anything a little guy will grow out of fast will end up being given away
37. air conditioners, humidifiers and dehumidifiers. these will be most numerous during their respective off seasons
list updated 2/13/24 based on recent Craigslist trawling
38. jars, both canning type jars and clean food jars like from pickled or jelly bought at the store
39. rugs. most of my rugs are sidewalk finds. rugs will almost always be dirty. a decent consumer grade rug cleaner costs under $100, it's cheaper to just buy one if you have the space to store it. flushing the scavenged rug with soap, hot water, vinegar, alcohol, etc will clean almost anything but huge bedbug and allergen warning on this item

Butch Fairy Zine: Answering questions
What art style are we looking for? What is the estimated timeline? Will you get paid? we answer them here!
We will be answering more questions and posting them in the days leading up to the artist application form opening. So if you have questions, use our inbox, or you can fill in our interest form and leave them at the bottom. And if you have queries for the frog, you can leave them there too. He is very busy, so keep that in mind.
Find the interest form here.
Our Artist Application form will open on the 12th of January 2024.
text version under the cut
What type of artists are you looking for? And are you after a specific style or a range of styles?
We are looking for artists who can create pieces with fully rendered fairies and a background within the specified schedule. These can be digital artworks that are flat colour artworks, paintings, a mixture, or another style entirely.
We will also accept mixed media and traditional artworks, but they will need to be scanned at a minimum of 300dpi.
~
When you sign up for an artist position, are there any requirements to be a part of the team?
E-mail communication is required (discord is optional).
You must have a PayPal account to receive payment.
You must be able to communicate comfortably in English.
You must be 18 or older at the time of signing the contract by the 16th of February.
~
For artists accepted into the zine what would be the timeline for completing and submitting artwork?
Our current schedule for the artists requires concept ideas to be submitted by Feb 16th, and the final version by May 16th! Progress check-ins will be on Feb 29th, March 21st, and April 11th.
(In the image there is also a table including this information as well as the final submissions date being May 16th)
~
When the zine is for sale, where would the profits go to (charity, zine admin, etc.)?
We are aiming to hold pre-orders in June/July of 2024, with a flat fee paid to all contributors and additional proceeds split between contributors and mods.
Our priority is to make sure each contributor is paid fairly for their work. If sales do well enough, 20% will be used for future books and projects, and 80% split between taxes and fees, production costs, contributors and shipping costs.
~
Is this physical or digital and will there be prints of the art available? Got any merch ideas planned to go along with the zine?
Both physical and digital! Our goal is to make a 210 x 148 mm (A5) perfect-bound soft cover book.
We also plan to add some paper merch, including prints of some of the art from the book. Additional merch ideas include stickers, sticker sheets and bookmarks.

When I was in Japan, I decided to text some friends pictures of the drinks I was trying with short reviews. This was a very fun way to keep them updated with a bit of what I was doing on my trip when I didn’t have time to fully relay every single detail. It also inspired me to try a wider range of drinks than I might have otherwise! I’m vegetarian, so there was a lot of Japanese food that I couldn’t try. Ordering a drink with every meal was a way to experience some new-to-me flavors. While I was in Maine my zine-scholar friend @korimicheleok challenged me to draw a whole zine during our short visit and this is the result! I also had a lot of cups of 7/10 green and black tea, but I wanted to highlight some of the standouts. I’m mailing copies of this zine to my $15 and up patreon backers this week, and I'll bring it to Geek Girl Con in November :)

I run a DIY anarchist zine distro. I recently started selling zines. 10 for 5$. No more than 20 per order. US only (that international shipping isn't worth paying trust me). I'm probably gonna end up losing money in the long run, but whatever. It's just me doing it too, so I'm moving through orders as fast as I can...aka whenever my gf isn't using the computer. I'm not Amazon so it might take a few days before I even start printing your zines but I toss in free stuff in every order. Also I might overcharge you a few bucks on shipping because the usps site doesn't have a "media mail" price calculator. I'm doing my best. Anyways if you want to buy some I made a noblogs.
These are the categories you can choose from.
1. RANDOM
2. New Releases *if anything new has recently come out*
3. Anarchy 101 & Social Anarchy
4. Anti-Colonial & Indigenous Resistance
5. Anti-Civilization & Green Anarchy
6. Anti-Fascist & Anti-Racist
7. Animal Liberation & Vegan/Straight Edge
8. Black Liberation & Black Anarchism
9. Community, Accountability & Relationship Anarchy
10. Communization & Communism
11. CCF, FAI, New Anarchy & The Black International
12. DIY & How-To
13. Gender, Patriarchy & Queer Anarchy
14. Harm Reduction
15. History & Intergenerational Memory
16. Insurrection
17. Individualist & Illegalist

i think i just get confused by anything that sounds like 'this countercultural, challenging, or otherwise disruptive artistic sensibility isn't present in the most popular or mainstream corporate media'. did we expect it to? why are we trying to buy clothes at the soup store
maybe it's just because i spend my time scrounging around libraries and itch.io and such but i'm often bewildered whenever people talk about everything becoming the same or death of art or everyone being afraid to Get Weird with It. i promise people are still out there getting weird with it. the hegemonic mainstream art remains hegemonic and mainstream like usual. counterculture remains counterculture. as usual. interesting and somewhat off-putting zines cost a little more but the cost of living is pretty high right now, and i don't particularly mind giving an independent artist a few more bucks for their work
#please contextualize my posts with 'this tumblrina worked on a punk zine archival project that included four decades worth of zines'#there were so many takes in there. before the 2000's people had to order their takes by mail and then send letters to the editor#just picture it. we could be sitting next to each other on a page under a shock humor column name that was really just letters to the edito#and people would have to pay 75 cents to read our argument

#VoicesFromTheStacks
Riot Grrrl and the Jen and Sarah Wolfe Zine Collection
On their 1995 track, “Criminal Boy,” female pop punk band Bunnygrunt begs the question: ‘what is a girl to do?’ The song chronicles a tough sister’s plans to break her all bark and no bite brother out of the slammer, which serves to be a fitting parallel to how the Riot Grrrl feminist movement of the 1990s got its start.
By the ’90s, the male-dominated U.S. punk movement, prominent in cities like Seattle and Portland, had been long ignoring the women participating in and moving forward the empowered anarchist agenda underlying punk music, media, and culture.
The Riot Grrrl Movement, aptly named and noted by its signature growling triple “r”, emerged as an opportunity for women in the punk scene to reclaim and redefine their identities as “girls” through expressions of anger, rage, and frustration. This subculture combined feminism, punk music, and politics by addressing issues of assault, patriarchy, anarchism, and female empowerment. The growth and success of the movement can be attributed to the multiple modalities used to spread their message: music, zines, art, and other DIYs that served as vessels for political activism.
Zines can be simply defined as self-written, often self-published and self-distributed “magazines” of narrow focus, created out of a desire to share. In the case of Riot Grrrl, this included, but was not limited to, punk and feminist literature, social commentary, news, gossip, music reviews, and other topical articles and musings.
The University of Iowa’s Special Collections and Archives’ Sarah and Jen Wolfe Zine Collection provides a dynamic, wide-ranging, and intimate glimpse into the zines created and distributed during the Riot Grrrl era. Donors of the collection, sisters Sarah and Jen Wolfe, were active Riot Grrrls throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s, with Jen playing bass for the band Bunnygrunt in 1995–1998 and later publishing her own zines: Bunnygrunt and Panophobia. The sisters also operated their own mail-order distribution service, out of Iowa City, Septophilia, for zines and records both, leading to their large collection of various independent, underground, and occasionally personalized zines.
With an established interest in the DIY and communal nature of zines, the Wolfe sisters have curated a thorough and impressive collection that will continue to provide insight of a first-person narrative in both collecting and creating at the height of the Riot Grrrl movement. To learn more about the Jen and Sarah Wolfe Zine Collection, the complete finding aid can be found here.

New August Masterpost
If you are unaware of the situation in our country, the argentinean government is fucking up the economy with their "chainsaw" plan, and getting rid of human rights in the process, among other things. The prices are up, including public transport, and the salaries aren't rising with them.
This masterpost was made in order give our artists the opportunity to enter the international market since our currency is plummeting, so if you like what you see please consider commissioning us. If you aren't able to, reblog this post please, WE NEED THE VISIBILITY. Alt texts are in English and Spanish. ____________________________ Si no conocés la situación en nuestro país, el gobierno argentino esta haciendo mierda la economía con su plan "motosierra", y deshaciéndose de derechos humanos en el proceso, entre otras cosas. I've received a few questions from people looking to make fan merch recently, so now's as good a time as any to update SLARPG's fan merch guidelines in our FAQ for clarity!
Selling fan-made merchandise
What's okay:
Generally speaking: independent artists making merch with their own SLARPG-inspired artwork/designs and selling it in limited quantities. This includes the usual things you'd sell at a convention like prints, stickers, pins, charms, standees, etc.
For example: if you draw a piece of Melody fanart, and you print 100 copies to sell at a convention, and then you sell the leftover stock on Etsy, that's all totally fine.
Basically anything handmade or one-of-a-kind. Cosplay items, hand-sewn plushes, Perler bead sprites, etc.
Fan zines, comics, etc. consisting of original artwork.
Also, if you're selling these things online, please try to make it clear that it's unofficial in some way, just to avoid confusion. A simple shout out in the description telling people to check out the game will probably suffice.
What's NOT okay:
A company (as opposed to an independent artist) selling unlicensed merch.
Mass-produced unofficial merch. I don't have a specific number for what counts as "mass-produced," and if something sells out I won't stop you from making more. But, y'know, please don't order 10,000 of something.
Designs sold via online print-on-demand services such as those provided by Amazon, RedBubble, CafePress, TeePublic, etc. where they can be mass-produced indefinitely.
Selling printings of official artwork from the game, presented as-is in a non-transformative way. For example: selling a poster of one of my illustrations of the cast, or stickers using the character sprites.
I'm a smalltime creator trying to make ends meet, and SLARPG and any related projects are my livelihood, so in some regards I have to be a little precious with these things. But I also get that fan artists are just trying to make a living themselves, and this stuff is usually made out of love for the source material. So I wanna allow as much as I reasonably can.
If you have further questions, feel free to contact me (Bobby) through the usual social media channels or by e-mailing me via [email protected].
