Silene vulgaris, or the bladder campion or maidenstears, is native to Europe, where in some parts it is eaten, but is also widespread in North America, where it is a common wildflower in meadows, open woods, and fields. The young shoots and the leaves may be used as food in some countries of the Mediterranean region. The tender leaves may be eaten raw in salads. The older leaves are usually eaten boiled or fried, sauteed with garlic as well as in omelettes. (X)

Wildflowers I picked for my home warming party a few months ago. Red Clover, Chicory, Daisy Fleabane, Maidenstears (Bladder Campion), Purple Vetch, and two wild grasses which I believe are Timothy and Orchard Grass.

I’ve spent last night making lists of what kind of plants I’m thinking of growing (from seed & otherwise) next year. I have a spreadsheet and everything. The idea for next year is to grow plants native to the netherlands outside on my balcony, and inside anything goes.

So far for outside I have planned (though this might still change): raspberry (probably both summer and autumn varieties) oregano (wilde marjolein, origanum vulgare) sneezewort (???? english people are you ok. we call it ‘wilde bertram’ which sounds so much better than sneezewort?????????) chamomile mint wild strawberry beetroot (going to try and get 2 crops, both in summer and early winter) kale (though not until later in the year so it can properly grow in winter, kale tastes better if temperatures are freezing) maidenstears/bladder campion (silene vulgaris, blaassilene) these are not native but I’m also adding sunflowers, and the tea plant I got from my friend - if it survives the winter - will move permanently outside too. For inside I have planned: -”regular” basil (whichever variety that is) -thai basil -lemon verbena -mimosa

if anyone has anything fun to recommend let me know! I’m open to suggestions!
