Flu epidemic and volunteering for activists
2 weeks ago we had a very quiet week; it’s flue season and we all caught it!
Only 2-3 students were present most days, so we spent a lot of time on cleaning the kitchen and making the shared room a bit less institution like and more cosy and presentable for the evening café on Wednesdays.
I finally got to witness some teaching as well, about hygiene and key tools on how to be more service minded and how to act as a waiter, e.g. when running the café on Wednesday nights. The teaching got quite disturbed in the room where we were sitting and that affected the students’ abilities to concentrate a lot. So many of them were spending time on their phones and so. So I’m prepared for that when I’m going to teach. On the other hand, it might go really well.
Besides that we cooked and ate a lot of delicious food :)
Lunch cooked by Jonas and the KU students: Butterchicken, rice and naan bread!
Beautiful beets :)
Lærke, Siggy, Charlotte and the new intern, Tina - Busy preparing plates for the café’s customers.
Camillo arranging salad bowls
Wednesday’s menu: Hake, mashed potatoes, beets, red cabbage served with salad bowls.
Saturday Charlotte had encouraged the students to volunteer to cook for the activists at ‘Ungdomshuset’ (before their 10-year anniversary party in memory of the former youth house on Jagtvej 69. The new youth house is placed in the North West part of Copenhagen, Dortheavej 61. One of the students is actively involved in the youth house and she was the host of the nights event, respect! Unfortunately I had caught the flu by Saturday and couldn’t participate. But we planned a delicious menu, all vegan; polenta/eggplant burgers with homemade fries, ketchup and mayo. It all went well and the students participated in the party afterwards.

The former ‘Ungdomshuset’ on Jagtvej 69 was founded back in 82′ and a hangout for many activists and underground cultures and hosted many music events throughout the year until the ground was bought by a Christian foundation and torn down in 2007 resulting in many demos and a brutal battle between the users of ‘Ungdomshuset’ and the Police. Complete chaos in Nørrebro. I remember being a teenager living far from Copenhagen and watching this on the TV. It made a big impression on me and I wished I could have participated in the volunteer work.

I found a documentary with English subtitles, if you’re interested in knowing more:

The production school is placed one block from Jagtvej 69. I passed by the other day and this is what the ground looks like today; surprisingly empty with a city garden. As an indication of the anger and the frustration that the tear down caused, it says ‘Magtvej 69′ on the wall and ‘magt’ is the Danish word for ‘power’ or ‘force’.
