why wigfrid's magmatic skin sucks butt and why it needs a redesign a week ago
a (disproportionately) long and detailed analysis
DESIGN WISE (INDIVIDUALLY)
Being a sequel to the gladiator skins- and, obviously, the Forge event that originally introduced them- it’s perfectly logical to harp on a more fiery motif than the previous, more barbaric warrior approach they went with previously. On top of that, a consistent theme with the Magmatic skins is the use of gold accents, which Wigfrid already has in her main aesthetic anyways. You could logically assume, then, that it would be no small feat to mix red and gold (colors she already has regularly) into a cool looking brawler-type outfit, right? Wrong. You would be wrong you would be the wrongest you’ve ever been in your life. Observe:
The biggest and most obvious flaw with this design is the overbearingness of the saturation. Absolute misuse of the color yellow- especially when compared to the red and the glaring white of her skin (which can not be altered since that’s the shade that white skin tones take within this game, meaning that all skins should be built with this tone in mind). There is NO place for your eyes to rest here! All of the colors are simultaneously battling for your attention. Also, you really should never make gold that yellow like. ever. Gold always has orange hints to it, it’s not giving a gold, or even a brassy feel. It’s evocative of plastic.
DESIGN WISE (COMPARATIVELY)
I think the fairest skins I can use to compare the Magmatic skin to are her classic skin and her Forge skin. Classic is applicable for obvious reasons, but since Magmatic was supposed to be a follow up to the Forge, I think it’s perfectly fair to see why one fails and the other succeeds.
Notice- even beyond the point of Magmatic’s sharp increase in saturation- a particular feature about the palettes of these three skins. Magmatic contains the least amount of color variation here. Even less than her original skin, which is only four colors. A skin that’s supposed to be more unique and lucrative to the original is sporting less (and worse) color variation.
Speaking of the quality of the colors, when compared to the other two skins you can notice something else about the colors. Her original and Forge skins have a complementing palette, meaning there’s not really any particular color that feels out of place amidst each other. While one could argue that the contrast between all three of Magmatic’s colors could stand on its own as a half decent palette of colors, they weren’t used properly enough for that point to matter! The other two skins sport a healthy use of all three colors, where Magmatic completely swallows the outfit in bold, clashing tones without any regard for tasteful splashes that wouldn’t melt your eyes out. “But Savvy-” I hear you calling into your electronic devices, “-But Savvy, you’re looking at the portraits. That doesn’t really matter when you’re critiquing the skins themselves!” first of all yes it does bc when people are drawing characters in skins they hardly ever pull up the skin itself; they pull up the portrait, since it’s usually more detailed. But the Magmatic skin still fails to be as good as its predecessors within the actual game sprites!!
Outside of her original skin (which is supposed to be stripped back in comparison to the others, obviously), the other two skins do gain a bit more color variety than their portraits would suggest. Where Forge gains an extra two (technically three) tones, Magmatic only gains one. “One is better than nothing thou-” no it isn’t and here’s why.
The extra tone Magmatic receives is a deeper shade of red- meant to separate her hair from her clothing, which the portrait would suggest is the same shade (and, just as a side note: that candy cherry red in the portrait is abnormally bright. Considering that her in-game hair color is the exact same as her regular and Forge skins, it’s a mystery why they chose to portray it that way). But if we actually take a closer look at that deeper red, we can see some orangey tints to it- a little bit of a natural rustiness. This is good, in a vacuum- some more natural tones would very much be appreciated in comparison to the hot colors we’ve previously received.
But there’s no point to the different shades of red. They’re so far away from each other that you would barely notice in casual use. Compare it to the Forge skin, where three different shades of red overlap to create some fun visual contrast. The strip of paint to draw your attention to her eyes and face, the deep burgundy of the twine that holds her hair back, or the strips of her helm. The color difference is useful, and employed in a way that highlights just how much color variation there is, and how it's used to its full potential.
And if you think I’m nitpicking, yeah, I am. I have to. Because there’s only four colors, and one of them is useless.
Another thing I think is an absolute tragedy is the misuse of armor. Out of all the cast, Wigfrid and Wilson are the only two characters to include armor in their Magmatic skins at all (pardoning WX, who is made of metal already so I don’t think they count). And where Wilson can get away with only having some shoulder pads, half a chestplate, and… a groin protector?? Wigfrid absolutely can’t.
Just LOOK at her Forge design. The 3D-esque effect of the helmet as it grips to her head, the scaling of the arm protection that drapes all the way down to her wrists, the detailing on her gloves, the attention devoted to the legs and feet even with their lack of space to utilize, the strips of leather that bound everything together. Wigfrid is a warrior, she was born for badass armor designs, and Magmatic completely dropped the ball.
A body devoted mostly of what looks to be red cloth of some variety, accented few and far between with a chestplate sporting a singular strip, what appears to be a sash that keeps the golden texture somehow, and hands and feet that sort of just look like she took a little dip in mustard. Where I can appreciate the design that went into the shoulderpads, it pales in comparison to the Forge’s dedication, and for a skin that’s supposed to be Forge Two it’s a major miss.
DESIGN WISE (AS A WIGFRID SKIN)
To me one of the biggest issues I have with this skin is that it doesn’t really feel as though it harps on any motifs, themes, or design choices that are really evocative of Wigfrid as a character. I can appreciate the attempt to harken back to her helmet and the wings on it by bringing that motif back in her headband, shoulderpads, and feet. However, not only do I find it to be a bit of an overuse of the design (it’s just one trope stapled onto her three times), but I find the bird aesthetic of her headpiece to be confusing as well.
Certainly, Valkyries in Norse myths are hearkened to and compared to ravens, but even if its meant to be a raven carved into the front, the bright gold is such an un-ravenlike color that it kind of just turns into looking like a generic bird of prey. The attempt to conform so heavily to one attribute of her aesthetic ends up taking two steps back, instead of even half a step forward.
But really, what’s most jarring about this skin to me is the hair. Wigfrid’s usual twin braid look is the one defining feature that makes Wigfrid’s profile look like Wigfrid at all. More- I would argue- than her head and body shape.
If I were to ask you which of these two characters is Wigfrid it would take you less than two seconds to tell me. But if I were to show you, for instance, a silhouette of her Verdant head (JUST the head, not the rest of the design here since we’re just focusing on hair)-
-I would be surprised if you could tell me who she was at all. And even then, it would probably be more the fault of the leaves that frame her head rather than anything particularly indicative about the hair itself.
More often than not, Wigfrid’s skins conform to this motif of braided hair. And even the ones that don’t will usually stick to one of two ‘back up trends’ to vaguely keep her silhouette recognizable. They’ll either:
Keep the hair shorter, but still frame the face symmetrically
Or- in the case of specifically her Refresh skin- keep the hair braided, but let the style get an asymmetric twist
Even when the skins don’t stick to the trend of twin braids, you can at least make a case for why they wouldn’t be doing so. Her Roseate and Triumphant skins are braided back to give the illusion of a more refined air, and even then, the nubs that stick out from behind the back of her head hold symmetry. Her Refresh skin, while only having one braid, excuses itself with its focus on a more aerodynamic and sleek appearance- which comes through in the posing of the portrait specifically.
The twist on her Forge skin’s hair was perfect; a slightly wilder look at the ends, tied together with some sort of twine or leather. It gives the look of needing to make due with resources at her disposal, keeping her hair in check and a little more out of the way without dampening the impact of the warrior feel.
But not only is her Magmatic hair inconsistent from the portrait to the in-game sprite (the portrait makes it resemble more of a ponytail, while the sprite doesn’t show any sort of layering between the back of the head and the dangle of hair), and not only is it asymmetrical with no stylistic benefit, but the style itself is completely purposeless! It doesn’t make a statement about the situation she’s currently in. It doesn’t tell a story or fit aesthetically with the rest of the design. It doesn’t make Wigfrid look or feel like Wigfrid at all!
AND ALSO THEY FORGOT HER GAPTOOTH IN THE PORTRAIT!!!!!!!!!
PAIN AND MISERY ONE THOUSAND YEARS!!!!!!
#anyways this is a joke but also no it isnt. its a joke bc it isnt a big deal. but it isnt bc i hate this skin one million times forever.#its just not good. its bad even.#woodie got such a badass magmatic skin so did wilson honestly. so did wx and winona and wendy#even WILLOW- for how bright the contrast was- looks better than wig does. it is NOT fair#anyways. i would have redesigned it fifteen hundred years ago but i also suck at clothing designs#so i guess me and klei are hand in unlovable hand abt this one#tfw they change max's moonbound skin bc of how bad everyone found it but wigfrid will remain gross forever#bc nobody was there for her when she needed them most. sorry sweetheart you'll be mc donal colors forever

something I’ve never seen done but think about a lot is survivors always having SOMETHING in their “next life” that indicates how they died in a previous one. for example, let’s say wilson dies from a hound. in the next life, he’ll have a marking that looks like a hound bite. then let’s say he dies from freezing. he won’t have that hound bite marking anymore, but instead, his fingertips seem to be tinted blue and his face is a little more red than usual.
it would likely be a little different for non-human survivors and natural causes. let’s say, WX and wormwood die of freezing. for WX, instead of the blue tint on their fingers, they’d have frost on some parts of their body. for wormwood, his leaves are a little shriveled and curled inward, as if seeking warmth. let’s say wurt and webber die of overheating. since wurt is a merm, I imagine her skin would be a little less moisturized. not completely dry, of course, but drier than it normally is. for webber, his fur around his head would be tinted red and yellow at the tips—similarly to his magmatic skin, but less controlled-looking.
for wanda, she can’t really naturally die. she only dies due to the “passage of time.” therefore, she wouldn’t be marked… but her clocks would be. she’d see dents, engravings, markings—all different indicators of how she died.
IDK I JUST THINK IT’D BE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!
(shoutout to @steeloptic for helping with wormwood and wanda. @ubersaw check this shit out)

I had an idea for an RPG fan game for Don't Starve.
And had ideas for animations for this gimmick where characters can become their skin sets (For example, the triumphant set) and use special moves. {This is going to be a bit of a ramble so I will be putting it under the cut}
(Willow showing off these animation ideas)
For characters without certain skin sets (Example; Walter has no triumphant skin yet) the set ability thing will be locked. (I would hope to update the game to add the set in once that skin is released for them but for characters who will likely never receive a skin set [DLC characters and the forge] I will think of something.)
The Gorge set (Which is the Victorian set) is mostly focused around cooking the opponent (still working on this), some characters will have special moves connected to this set. (WX-78 is able to be in water, Wes can blind the opponent and more)
The Forge set is focused on combat, if a character has a special item like Woodie's Axe, Lucy, then that item will act like how they are in the Forge. Since The Forge has a second set, the Magmatic set is the second option for when you need to roast those who are standing in your way. (Or is the second level to the base forge set)
The Snowfallen set is focused on mostly spells, relating to the cold. Almost all of the characters have this set. [Working on this one too]
The Triumphant set, they use more shadow base attacks and some have very deadly special moves while Maxwell has a special move that summons a certain someone to help him. [Working on this one as well]
Last one for now... The Survivor set, they get a slight buff in defense and attack, the characters' attacks are given a little more power in it.
That's it for now, let me know what you think of this and if you have any ideas I should add, let me know.
#dst#don't starve#don't starve together#rambling#dst willow#I will go into detail about some characters' special abilities later#I will likely never make the game because I don't know how to code or animate so f

I strongly agree with this take!
And since we're talking about how the characters would rule the world in Maxwell's place, let me give some of my ideas, alongside potential skin changes.
Here's a couple entries of other characters if they were potentially to run the constant their own way:
Willow would absolutely be the kind of person who would spring life in just to destroy it later. She has to every once and a while create new stuff, it doesn't have to look good, as long as it's flammable! And of course the fire she'd cause would probably last waaay longer than it does normally, and it would take much longer for the structures to be completely destroyed before the flame gave out. I really like the hair they did for her in her triumphant skin, because she's DEFINITELY have that sort of thing going on, buut then again, she's just cosplaying as Charlie but in a puffier dress. I think she'd wear something much more chaotic.
While I think her top part would stay similar to her triumphant, her bottom part would need more color, more FIRE kind of similar to her Magmatic skin but with much more razzmatazz, and the skirt would actually be 24/7 fire effect, as would be her hair. She'd love it that way. Also her hair could probably switch between being actual fire (perhaps whenever she's excited or angered) and the nightmare fuel one.
WX-78
would probably build a robot army and I'd like to imagine they'd use one of their scrapped skins as either a mech or their brand new, better body. (They'd likely make themself into a stronger type of metal so they might potentially change color, depending on the metal's properties)
They'd also add a ton of weapons, firearms and spikes to look extra menacing and tall. (As any 4'10 person dreams of I'm sure) Their version of the constant would just be a mine field full of machines 0% organic plants, all mechanical mock-ups, and instead of water, the lakes and ocean would be filled with either tar, gasoline or oil, anything that's actually beneficial to machines. They'd also build a lot of obnoxious statues of themselves as Maxwell does.
Wickerbottom
Not sure if she'd wear so much black but she could potentially make herself appear younger (ditch the black hair, shed make herself ginger again, or stay grey) I don't really have many complaints against her outfit except that it could perhaps use more white or grey. She'd definitely keep the feathers though, that part suits her well and she doesn't seem to complain about wearing fine clothes.
And about her ruling; She'd make the constant into her personal library, build a couple of statues of herself since this exists.
She'd probably make the area appear more elegant and maybe victorian, honestly I think she'd have a similar taste to Charlie, but with her nerdy addons. Books will be everywhere. Of any kind about pretty much anything. She'd probably occasionally show up to the player and give them some kind of interesting fact before dissapearing into nothingness. Now that doesn't mean she would develop a sadistic side, anyone corrupted by Them would, I'm sure.
She'd likely punish those who avoid reading her books, or make her books especially hypnotizing so once you start reading you won't stop until you're finished with the last page. So for example If you pick up a book while starving, fighting or running you'd be screwed potentially. She'd also make notes of your progress and tell you that she's making a title about you. Similar to Wilson shed put you into specific experimental situations to make her book more interesting. And you should know very well that authors can be quite vicious to their characters. :)
Wolfgang
would make himself ridiculously muscular I'm sure, ditch that shirt and belt, maybe he'd just wear speedos and flex all the time, other times he'd go back to his era as a war vet and look like a commanding officer. He'd make the survivors go through a military endurance training, turning the whole world into one hellish gym. He'd probably brag to the survivor that he can do it, so why can't they?
On the plus side, food would be plentiful. There would be patches of land to farm, and beasts to hunt too, but you'd have to survive a full course of training to get to them first.
Webber
would obviously fill the world with spiders. Any kind of spiders, every surface would be covered in webs. He'd make the area a fun playground for spiders, but a misery to everyone else. Maybe he's unaware of it, maybe They made him enjoy watching others struggle. He'd probably add in other creatures but they'd all be lower on the food chain than spiders.
And I'm not too sure about him being a black widow, since they're not even as deadly to humans, as they're rumored. So how about making him even more deadly, say a Funnel web Spider? (Would show the image here, but I don't want to startle any arachnophobes so you can search them up yourself) Now, the pattern on their back might not be as iconic as the red hour glass, but their venom is certainly much more deadly, and they're said to be more aggressive. One chomp from Webber and you'd be sent to the purgatory.
Wormwood
while I'm not sure if he'll cope well with being on the shadow side, so I'm going to give two alternatives. One if he were to become corrupted by the nightmare throne, and other if he were to come into ruling on the light side.
Triumphant wormwood is honestly a very fitting skin for him so no complaints there, he's a rotten, carnivorous plant, he both looks and feels miserable (plus he already sticks out from the rest of triumphunt skins) so naturally, he would make the world as rotten and miserable as he himself is. The world would be covered in vines and thorns, plants would rot quickly, so harvests would be few and far in between, the most sufficient way to get food is to hunt mobs. Although most mobs would also be carnivorous plants, so the main source of food would be plant meat that's also likely stale.
His throneroom would all be just thorny vines with a few evil flowers here and there. Vines would hang from the ceiling which would likely strangle you if you made the wrong move. They would do that if you were to try and free him from the throne.
On the other hand, if he were to go into god mode as a being of light, the way he is. It honestly depends on his mental state to be honest, but knowing Them, he'd crack eventually or 'realize' his purpose, so in that case, the world would all be Alter themed, everything would be lunar plants and moon rocks. The nature would be plentiful, ghastalts would roam freely, and every night would be a full moon night. Shadows would be extremely rare in this world since the player would constantly be in a state of enlightenment. Even the caves would be mostly lit up by magical plants and flying mutated creatures. Wormwood would not allow a single shade to escape him, since Alter says shadows are bad, therefore they must go away. Though I imagine such world would look rather intriguing, all encased in a moon glass terrarium basically.
Skin wise I think his moonbound does the job just fine, bringing him back to his roots.
And that's all the character ideas I have atm. It's honestly fun imagining how these guys would dress and rule the world.
Ok this may be me being pedantic BUT
Something's always bugged me about the Triumphant Skins. They're supposedly the survivors if they had the opportunity to rule the Constant (minus Maxwell) or something along those lines. And for those most part, they do a good job of it.
But you cannot tell me that Wilson would run it like Maxwell did and dress in a fancy suit that (if you go by his Guest of Honor skin and quote) he'd likely hate.
If Wilson was in charge of the Constant, there's no way he wouldn't treat the place like his own personal science experiment. Studying the behavior of humans under stressful conditions and deadly situations? That would be a goldmine of data for any aspiring scientist of the era.
TLDR Wilson's Hallowed Nights skin is a better fit for a Triumphant skin instead of him cosplaying as Maxwell.

“What were you thinking!?”
"WHAT?" WX quirks their head in Wilson's direction as they hang the Blacksmith's Edge on their wall. The blade is bloodied-- a lot more then usual. It's not supposed to really be used to butcher Pit Pigs, but the bot through that they would try. A few red drips fall onto the stone floor.
"THEY'RE JUST FODDER. THE BATTLEMASTER DOESN'T CARE IF THEY DIE. OR LOSE THEIR LEGS." He has so many of them, anyway. Why does it matter if he loses a few more in a show?
"THE CROWD SEEMED TO LIKE IT. NOTHING WILL HAPPEN TO YOU. OR ME FOR THAT MATTER."
"ACTUALLY, YOU SHOULD BE GRATEFUL." They're just teasing, though theire monotonus tone may make that hard to discern. "YOU WOULD'VE GOTTEN JABBED IN THE CALF IF I HADN'T REMOVED ITS NOSE."

Wilson - I do not like the outfit they gave Wilson here, it looks uninteresting and bland. I'd preferred if they gave him a different outfit that fits with what they were aiming for. (What I mean is like a lab coat that's got crystals growing on it or an space man(idk the word)) Willow - I will be honest, I don't like most of the magmatic skins. Some of this is due to the portraits being bright and not really fitting with the others before and after them but for this skin, I just don't like it. Wolfgang - For this skin, its just the portrait doing it dirty. Wolfgang's head looks like a potato stuck on a man's body and its in a bad way. Wendy - Her hair is missing just enough lines where it doesn't feel bland or unfitting (I don't know what I am trying to say here.), the paint on her face needs to be more sketchy as it doesn't fit the style Don't Starve is trying to set. Also, another bright portrait. WX-78 - I don't vibe with the skin, that's it. Wickerbottom - I don't hate this skin, I just don't see myself using it. Woodie - I love this skin but the in-game version of it is just... cluttered? Wes - Another Magmatic Skin, this time I think the outfit is bad but I guess its fitting for him. Maxwell - First one, the MoonBound skin has the same issue as Wilson's skin, the outfit having random rope around his torso is just... idk?? Second one, the wizard skin is just ugly without the hat but its fitting I guess. Wigfrid - Portrait being bad. (It was either this or the halloween one) Webber - It is just a recolour of Webber with spikes slapped onto his hands and legs. Winona - Most of her skins are good! (except the purple one) however I put this one here because it was the first Halloween skin I got. I hate it >:( Warly - Most of his skins are good too! I just picked the carrat one because I wouldn't use it. Wortox - Apparent this skin is his survivour skin, I really don't like that fact at all. Why make him a goblin? Could have kept the shaven look but didn't make him into a goblin? i don't know. Wormwood - As much as I am a wormwood fan and a wormwood skin apologist, I will admit... I don't this skin and the reason why is mostly due to the stem being way too thin for me. Wurt - I love all of Wurt's skins but the in-game for this one is... sad. Walter - It relies on the hat too much so in the end, the skin ends up being slightly lazy looking. (Idk) Wanda - All of her skins are great! I just don't personally see myself using this skin.

image id: a digital painting of wx-78 from the game don’t starve. they’re pictured in their magmatic skin to a little below the hips. the image shows them as they’re taking a step, seemingly leaning their right leg on the edge of the canvas. both of their arms are bent in the elbows and raised in a shurg-like gesture. wx is looking down at the viewer. the background shows clouds of dark red and brown smoke, there is smoke visible pouring out of various pipes on wx’s armor as well and it’s colored orange. on the top, there are little, bright red speckles drawn. /end id

Been in a very cyber punk mood lately (it just happens to be my WHOLE aesthetic haha), so I did a quick-paint concept art of WX's magmatic skin as a cyberpunk design!
This was a lot of fun I might try more of this again in the future :D (plus like... I LOVE ROBOTS so why not!)
(please don’t repost/use this, and leave my description; thanks! reblogs highly appreciated!)
