I would really love it if there was a Magit "tutorial" for Git experts and proficient power users, written mostly in terms of Git shell commands and how Magit improves on them.
Assume we already know how to do everything Magic can do manually - with the Git CLI and other manual actions. Assume we've got our shell ergonomics polished to the point that it takes us 3-6 keystrokes to run most commands. Assume we've got a great interface for moving through, searching, and copying the text output from Git commands.
Now what does Magit get us? What's faster or more ergonomic? Where do we save keystrokes or manual steps? Where do we save mental labor? What relevant info is more accessible at the right times and places?
For example,
if you want to stage lines more granularly than "git add -p" can split, in Magit if you have lines in the diff selected and hit stage, only those lines are staged;
when you go to write your commit message, Magit automatically shows you the diff beside the commit message, which is surprisingly more helpful than you might realize until you've experienced no longer having to remember with your brain what you just staged;
Magit remembers recent commit messages for you, so for example if you abort a commit and then wish you could get the message you typed back, it's just couple keystrokes away.
What else?

have you ever made a post talking about why you prefer emacs? used it for a while and enjoyed it but i've since realized i prefer neovim + vim-like specific uh. projects? yk taskwarrior for tasks and stuff. and tmux for multiplexing, cmus for music etc. no good alternative to org-mode, but i did mostly use it for tasks and taskwarrior seems better suited for it (personally). but i am interested in knowing why you prefer emacs. lisp? admittedly i do like the dired view but not enough to shift permanently to emacs. i find myself using emacs how i used to use vscode. i remember i wanted to try mu4e on your recommendation but shamefully i've never gotten around to it.
I typed up a whole long thing talking about the packages I like but that's actually relatively unimportant. Emacs is good because it makes it very easy for me to be in control of how I fundamentally interact with my computer, such so that I want to cram a bunch of my time on the computer into emacs.
If you constantly find yourself wishing the software you're using was a little bit different, better suited to you in particular in this or that way. Well emacs makes it really easy to do that. You can make the machine fit your shape. And then you can take that with you wherever you go.
Also I can't make myself do things without org mode and it's literally impossible to replace lol.

honestly i cant even begin to hate on Nathan for being so uptight and the “no fun” guy
My guy is *stressed* and trying his best fr!!! imagine being this guy, youre set up as the next one to have the responsibility of protecting prime, the pressure of your entire family´s legacy falls on you, but it´s fine!  the star seed is incredibly powerful, youve been trained from a young age, plus it´s not like you have to take the mantle up just yet, your dad´s still the active protector, and when he retires from that he´ll be able to guide you as you take your turn
except no- his dad disappears one day leaving absolutely no trace, save for the star seed, which then ends up in the hands of two literal children ( what? 14 years old is waay different than 17 wym?), and now he has no choice but to get them to help, one of them doesnt even wanna be there, the other one is way too enthusiastic abt this whole thing, and neither of them listen, like, at all-
bruh he´s irritated at them at worst, i´d be fuming oh my gosh!!-

i used to know how to use git but then i got magitpilled, which, similarly to every other thing ive set up for "productivity", basically amounted to being rigged into a technology via lobotomy like isaac in blindsight. so now i cant use the command line anymore even though magit is basically a 1:1 reproduction of the default interface

Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor)
Tumblr media
A national observance in the Philippines which commemorates the fall of Bataan to Japanese troops during World War II. The day is officially celebrated every April 9, the beginning of the infamous Bataan Death March.
The observance of the Day of Valor is usually centered on Mount Samat National Shrine in Pilar, Bataan. It is usually attended by the President of the Philippines, the Governor of Bataan, the ambassadors of the United States and Japan, and surviving veterans' groups.
By 2021, there were only 2,952 defenders of Bataan who are still alive.

Alright, so, to summarize all the Emacs Git/diff/pop-to-command/why-Magit-is-not-for-me posts: I am now a very happy user of one consistent interface for all diff-y text operations!
Before I headed down this path, I was looking at the prospect of having 3-5 different interfaces to deal with:
an Emacs-specific interface for Git (admittedly a very nice one for certain usage patterns and workflows - Magit brings some really really nice touches to the table),
a different Emacs-specific interface for viewing the differences between a file's on-disk and in-editor contents (Emac's built-in diff mode, which adds its own rather nice refinement to regular diff command output),
yet a third Emacs-specific interface for granularly applying/reverting changes between a file's on-disk and in-editor contents (Emac's built-in Ediff, which, again, is admittedly nice),
and possibly something else that I'd have to figure out, because after scouting a bit, it seemed that Ediff didn't really cover both partial save and partial reload out of the box.
And of course, I'd still occasionally find myself having to use the Git CLI outside of Emacs (and maybe even from inside Emacs, if I couldn't get Magit to properly wrap my git-cotree stuff).
And those Emacs solutions were going to demand specialized effort to learn, configure, integrate, work around, hack, and monkeypatch - much of that was not shared. There wasn't going to be any of the force-multiplication of just solving a thing in code/config once or mentally adapting once and getting the benefit everywhere. And I'd have to force them to behave in ways they weren't designed for where my UX preferences/needs were different.
Now, instead:
my Emacs interface for Git is just Git CLI commands, popping up in their own in-Emacs terminals when I call them;
my Emacs interface for getting differences between files on-disk and in-editor is just "git diff", using its built-in ability to work as a regular diff (which means I get niceties like Git's moved line detection and my git-delta setup);
my Emacs interface for granularly applying/discarding changes between a file and its buffer is just "git add -p" (the only touch I'm missing here is that I'd like to replace "Stage this hunk" in the prompt text with strings like "Save this hunk" and "Load this hunk", but near as I can tell that's hardcoded in one of the Perl files that make up the Git CLI);
to bring anything else into the same UI/UX, all I have to figure out is how to map those things into temporary files/directories for input and output (for example, grab the currently opened file or given file-name, and the first of its Syncthing sync-conflict files), and maybe more fundamentally how to enhance my diffing to handle them better (for example, bring in language-aware diffing like difftastic offers).
When I find myself outside of Emacs, the only thing I've lost is the efficient keybinds for the commands and the window splitting/management around them, not the core functionality and interface.

As a neovim user, I don't honestly know much about emacs. How is it differnt fundamental from vim and such?
I probably don't know enough about vim/neovim to give a meaningful awnser. (I know as much as vimtutor teached me, and apparently there are a lot of functions that are completely unmeantioned there)
If we talk about fundamentals, the biggest differences is probably, that emacs is (out of the box) not a modal editor, meaning instead of switching between an edit and insert-mode, you are always in insert mode and navigate/edit via key combinations (kinda like modern gui text editors). Another fundamental difference is, that the cursor sits between the characters in contrast to vim, where it sits on a character.
Also, while emacs can run in a terminal, it is also a GUI programm with image support and such.
Oh, and "yank" means in emacs term the opposite to what it means in vim. (Ah, good old software so ancient, that it precedes modern terminology like "cut" and "paste")
Thats mostly it for text editing. But emacs can do a lot more cool things: Org-mode is fantastic for taking notes (and can get even better with certain packages) (and IMHO a better markup language than markdown). Magit is for some people the best git client in existence. Editing and file navigation on remote systems works as well as local editing. And much more.
I can highly recommend simply installing emacs and trying out the tutorial. It tells you basically everything thats in the base packet and gives you links to where to get more in depth infos for configuration and external packages. To run the tutorial, start Emacs and type C-h t, that is, Ctrl-h followed by t.
You could even continue to use vim keybinds thanks to the @emacs-evil-mode package.
I've had a similar discussion in the past worth reading:

[Question for the Collector Series]
Does anyone, aside from Trick, from the heaven embassy like the Elders and the Seraphims know of our existence?
Does Seraphim Sera or Seraphim Emily know of our existence?
(obviously) This is for {Collection of Overlords}, check MASTERLIST for the work
Okay, good question and this can actually go both ways. So I’ll answer that first. As a whole, both Heaven and Hell are not aware of the opposite’s True Ruler/Supreme Being, Trick/Noir or Collector/you respectively.
Now I say that in the sense that its realm residents, so angels for Heaven and demons for Hell, don’t know what you and Trick are or the truth of what you are in the world/universe/etc. Obviously, the elders and angels in Heaven listen to Trick’s words through ‘divine messages’ or go along with what Trick has arranged through ‘divine intervention’. Then for you, you have your thing of being involved but not at the same time.
However, it’s the basic realm residents that have absolutely no idea who or what you and Trick are, they don’t even know you two exist. As for the higher ranks of both sides, it’s different and how my answer is what it is in the beginning. Let’s break it down.
To what degree do Heaven’s higher-ups know about Trick?
A weak degree in simple terms.
See, Trick is not like you, they don’t and didn’t make themselves know to anyone outside of you. While they the Heaven’s higher-ups that there is a god, Trick is most certainly not one. Noir played the role of god in the eyes of Heaven and Earth because it felt like the right thing to do with their powers over light and holy elements in contrast to yours. While Noir played that role, they still never made themselves known.
If we’re going with what was revealed in the show, or canon, there are the Elders, Seraphim, Exorcists, Angels (human souls that died and judged to be in Heaven), and Heaven borns (not sure if they are called angels or not, but there’s also the Cherubs from Helluva Boss’ canon).
What about you? (explained with Trick)
⇒ Elders (incorrectly) know that there is a higher power than them. Trick’s existence is a guess but a wrong one since they view Trick as the ‘god’ of the universe. By default, they don’t even think that there’s a possibility of someone on equal or greater footing than their so-called god. So yeah, the elders don’t know about you nor do they guess that there’s someone like Trick in Hell. Since Trick is (in their minds) THE god of the world.
⇒ Seraphim. Now, there are 2 that we know of; Sera and Emily.
So Sera is a no-brainer, no knowledge or guess to your existence. In terms of Trick though, she follows the Elders’ incorrect view but magitize it to seeing everything that’s unexplainable to be a ‘divine message’ or ‘divine intervention’ like needing guidance from the one above or to be shown that she has done something wrong. For example, when Sir Pentious appeared, Sera’s expression is that of shock and disbelief in a sense that she can’t understand why redemption was allowed for Sinners. Sera is more focused on doing right and just to please her god, so she also doesn’t see a being higher or equal to god, naturally you’re non-existent to her.
In Emily’s case, while she too follows the Elders’ teachings, she doesn’t stress it all too much because she is the one that brings happiness, so she can’t stress too much on it. In her view, as long as she is doing right, she’s fine. BUT! She does feel watched from time to time, she does ask Sera and the Elders about it, though it’s not the answer she wanted. They tell her that she was under the watchful eyes of god (when in reality it is Trick watching her and she feels it), it shows that her place in Heaven is secure and protected even though she isn’t as important. It’s after the end of Season 1 that Trick disguises themselves as a weaker resident of Heaven to talk with Emily. Trick does see potential in her that is missing from the others and is mimicking what you’re doing in Hell, just more focused on one individual. All in all, Emily has no knowledge or speculation of your existence.
⇒ Exorcists. Straight answer. No knowledge at all. Even when they have been to Hell to kill Sinners. That includes Adam, Lute, and Vaggie (formerly). You purely hide yourself even in Hell, you think they’d know?
Adam, even though he’s the first man, never even saw a or the god that the Heaven Elders and Sera are so obsessed over, so he doesn’t believe it no matter how many times they tell him. In his mind, if this god is so great, why did Lilith left him or why did Eve leave him too or maybe why did an Angel like Lucifer even get the freedom to rebel?
For Lute, she could care less, mainly because this god or divine being was never around nor was she punished for her actions. I mean, where’s the divine punishment when she cut Vaggie’s wings off and left her in Hell? She made the conclusion that she just needs to act like she cares in front of the higher-ups.
Other exorcists? Yeah, they don’t care much too. For all of them, when they don’t even care for Trick’s presence, yours is not even in their mind.
⇒ Angels. I mean this in the sense that they are the human souls that were allowed into Heaven after their death. This answer may surprise you. Some would guess your presence, specifically those that doesn’t believe in that one god. It’s the mindset of “if there’s a god of Heaven, then there’s a god of Hell since Heaven already exists”. They just never voice it out because Heaven is strict on rules and to talk about Hell’s ruler is like a major taboo. They just mostly stay within their lives and boundary, not caring about the bigger picture.
⇒ Heaven borns. Err… Not sure if this is even right. But if you watch Helluva Boss, you’d know what I’m referring to. The Cherbubs protects humans, it’s like a service provided, think guardian angels from in animal form. Granted that they go to Earth and interact with humans, somewhat. However, they are heavily strict on the rules as well and on top of that, focused on their work. Similar to Angels, they don’t see the bigger picture of concerns like god or whatnot. I mean, Hell’s not even on their mind, so yeah, they have no knowledge or even speculation of your existence.

Natsu pushed through the caboose door with L’lolamo onto the large platform that separated them from the cart where Fuyu’li had gone into. As they exited, Nyx hopped down beside them followed by Jannie, Minti Chocolate, Keith Summers, a gruff looking Hyur man carrying a black claymore, and a blond scruffy Miqo’te in a red hat.
“Teacher!” Natsu exclaimed before stepping forward to be embraced by X’ruhn Tia.
“I heard your call and enlisted my support. How can I help?” The Auri girl nodded gratefully to her teacher while L’lolamo quickly greeted them each by name, earning confused looks from the latter half of the group. L’lolamo stopping in front of Nyx, let her eyes widen then she threw her arms around her. “And of course you must be Nyx! Rrrahn has told me so much about you I feel like I know you alrrready. I mean, in a way I have always known you, a piece of you…you know, I’m not sure, but I know your soul and I am happy to have you as my future …daughter? Child-in-law does not sound quite right.” Nyx stood motionless, gaze ahead across to the other cart while the gruff Hyur crossed his arms and blew his bangs from his face. “So then. Nyx said you found a lead on Hazel,” he asked Natsu
“A strong connection. My friend Fuyu’li, he took Violet! He's being controlled by the imposter,” Natsu explained.
“Right then,” the man said before marching forward, pulling his dark Claymore off his back.
“Wait! I don't want to hurt him. He's being tricked,” Natsu protested, following after him while Minti and Keith followed behind.
“You getting any bad vibes,” X’ruhn asked Nyx, as she stared ahead with L’lolamo hanging on her.
“Many, X-Ruhn. Carter Summers is walking himself into a trap.”
“And you aren't going to stop him?” the Tia asked.
Nyx didn't answer, instead letting Jannie hurry ahead to call out to them, “Not another step forward.”
While the others listened, Carter ignored the warning before flitting his attention to the back top corners of the cart, flinging up his large sword to deflect two repelling blasts from fixed turrets. Stepping forward, Nyx raised her hand and sent her nouliths out to neutralize the defense while the rest prepped their weaponry as the top of the cart opened and Fuyu'li rose up from it atop his magitech vehicle.
Natsu pushed past the others, coming forward to look up her friend. “Fuyu'li! Please! You're being tricked! Give us back Violet and talk to me!”
Fuyu'li shook his head, ears folding back, “Just leave us Natsu! Nothing will stop me from seeing my master's dream come true!”
Natsu shook her head, “That's not your Master! Do you really think he'd want you kidnapping people for him!? Even if he did, why would you? Come down here now!”
“He asked me for this! He asked me for the sake of his sister! If that means I must take people unwilling to help then I will because I have the power to do so! I have the power to make his dream come true! You just don't understand because there's no one in this world that is precious to you except a father that you've never known and never will!”
Natsu tensed up, recoiling a bit at the other's words as he started to hit buttons on his console. The girl balled her fist around her rapier, looking down at her feet for a moment before sharply returning her attention to the Garlean, hand rising to let her focus flourish in the air.  “If you won't listen to me, then I'm just going to have to drag you out of that stupid machine by the ear and make you!”
With that she flung her focus higher, X'ruhn 's spinning above to join hers before they sent out a jolt of red aether at Fuyu'li. The magitech brought its arms up to shield itself from the blast before flying forward to charge the two mages, only to be rebuffed as Carter and Jannie plunged forward to block the path. From the open cart, small drones poured out and perched themselves on the sides of the platform rails and began to whirr as they charged up.
“Uh. Those little guys are gonna be a problem here in a second,” Keith yelled out, rushing in to pounce on the front of the mech and try to get a punch on the Miqo'te pilot.
“Power is limited so they will charge and fire separately. Analyze their behavior yourself to avoid unnecessary damage. Chocolate, please be on standby in case the brothers lack pattern recognition,” Nyx stated.
“HEY,” Carter and Keith shouted back before the latter was repelled by Fuyu'li with a blast, sending him scooting across the platform toward the caboose to Minti and Nyx’s feet.
Minti sighed then frowned in thought, raising her cane to soothe his injuries before stepping over him. With her cane held high, she tapped the ground with the butt of it.Every stray spore caught on the platform suddenly started to sprout out from her before, mushrooms blooming about as they pulled whatever life was left from the wooden boards under them.Soon a large purple aetheric bell moral formed and started to sway, singing a somber deep tone that resonated aether around her allies in little pulses of white light. “Have care, Summers. Watch your footing,” Minti cautioned, “Fall off the side of the train, and I get to tell Raha how you’re not coming back to him.”
Keith offered a little thumbs up from the ground, still a bit winded from the blast despite the ambient healing aether sounding out about him before being flung to the right as the group avoided the first round of blasts from the charged turrets. Ahead, the mech pushed back Jannie and Carter then swung two large laser swords down upon them while Natsu and X’ruhn pelted the mech from behind. Front open, L’lolamo flew forward and started to slice away at the front console with two swords quickly increasing in her speed as the metal streaked bright orange from the sheer heat and speed off the cuts. Frustrated, Fuyu’li smacked a button, opening the chest piece to let it give off a loud whine as it charged up it’s beam. Poised to fire, L’lolamo shielded her self with her arms and waited. As she flinched, she found herself in an aetheric box, sustained by Nyx’s nouliths before being pulled back to safety in it.
“I was about to finish him off,” L’lolamo protested toward Nyx as the blast reflected off her safety prism.
“Incorrect,” Nyx responded before releasing the woman as soon as the threat stopped, quickly moving to the left with the group as a second salvo of the turrets went off.
The platform soon let out a strained groan before the sound of metal popping echoed around them. The barrier on the right soon fell off, being quickly left behind by the chugging train. Soon after Fuyu'li rose into the air and away from the platform.
“Tunnel,” Keith called out before the party found themselves in a lantern lit cave.
“Let's see if we can get into the cart,” Carter huffed before stumbling back as two large spriggan on large glowing crystals dropped down blocking his path.
“For swives sake,” the Hyur cursed before drawing his sword up to block one of the creature's attacks.
“Stop complaining and separate them. Everyone split up,” Jannie ordered before firing off a cold beam of dark blue aether to grab the unfended one’s attention.
Minti and Keith hurried to Carter's side as the order was given, Natsu following close behind while the rest went with Jannie. Soon the large crystals under the Spriggan started crackling with electric aether before attempting to blast both parties. Natsu flinched as she braced for the attack only to feel the thunder boom through her horns without harming her. Looking up, she found a dark aura radiating about Carter and extending over herself, Minti, and Keith. Across from them the other's seemed to be shielded by Jannie’s own deep blue one. The Spriggan’s stones going dark, the two knights repelled the creatures and began to hack at them to keep them at bay so the others could move.
“An ambush is likely. We must disengage the spriggan before the end of the tunnel or we will likely perish,” Nyx said to the group.
Natsu and X’ruhn nodded then looked to one another before channeling their aether again. An explosion of wind and lightning soon billowed forth from them into a maelstrom, shocking and slinging wind blown rocks at the two creatures before exploding into a bunch of red sprite lighting. The platform shook as the two spent crystals fell onto the platform, the spriggan falling off them to roll off the edges.  Light soon flooded over the group as the train ran out of the tunnel and onto a bridge that overlooked a ravine.
Fuyu'li was almost immediately upon them at their side  “Your pursuit ends here,” he called out before slamming his fist on the console.
“Get to cover,” Minti called out, throwing her cane across her back before pulling Natsu and Keith behind a crystal as a barrage of missiles blasted into the train.
Once the smoke cleared, Natsu looked up, finding their barrier cracking. Panicked, she pushed Minti forward to safety with the others, letting Keith get dragged with her before she tried scrambling to get out of the way as another set of missiles flew toward them. Natsu's eyes widened as she looked out toward the barrage heading her way only to feel herself aetherically pulled into Minti’s arms.
“Gotcha,” Minti sang as the farther crystal exploded and was swept off the platform while the one beside them simply crumbled.
“Thank you,” Natsu said, getting to her feet.
“The ammunition for that model has been depleted. His swords and charged beams remain a threat,” Nyx informed the group, “Falling off the platform remains a risk.. Limited movement is suggested.”
A groan sounded out as the group waited for Fuyu'li’a attack. Ahead of them, Carter laid prone holding his shoulder. With a flick of their wrists, Nyx sent their nouliths to administer aid while maintaining a barrier about him.
“Just take him out already,” Carter yelled out to the others before being blocked off as Fuyu'li landed between them, extending his swords from the mech.
“Right! Let's give him everything we got,” X’ruhn said, “Jannie! Natsu! With me!”
Together, the three sped forward, Jannie taking the center to block the magitek’s swinging blades as the two red mages made their careful swipes in unison before pulling back to raise their focus’s high, Natsu channeling an unrelenting pillar of dark magic while X’ruhn did the same with light. Together, they whipped their swords to cross one another, letting them grow red before pooling their aether to send out a blinding beam of aetheric roses into Fuyu'li, knocking him back into cart ahead.
“This isn't over,” Fuyu’li cried out, letting the front carapace fly open to charge up another beam.
“Our turn, Minti! Send it high,” Keith laughed before taking a few steps then jumping into the air.
“With pleasure,” Minti called out, sending a large rock from her staff into the air after him.
Grinning, Keith caught the rock then spun in the air before raising it high and twisting himself to kick it into Fuyu'li’s canon, knocking it out before landing down beside Minti. He popped to his feet soon after,  giving his friend a little high-five before turning to Nyx with his hand raised only to have their hand quickly slap her palm over his, not averting their attention from Carter’s shield. In a flash, L’lolamo was upon Fuyu’li, striking at the the protective armor in a near blur of speed before slicing open what held him to let him stumble out. Huffing, the Keeper stood up, wiping a bit of blood off the corner of his mouth before pulling out his gunblade to fire off into the cart ahead of them a few times, trying to break the coupler. “Oh no you don’t,” Natsu called out, closing in on Fuyu’li to swipe at him. Their blades soon clashed, the two friends pushing into one another back and forth, “Enough is enough! I won’t let you take any more people! You need to listen to me,” Natsu shouted. “I can’t! My master means everything to me! I will lay my life down for him! I will do his bidding until- OW! Ow ow ow! Natsu, let go,” Fuyu’li whined out as the girl quickly reached in to tug at his ears, letting his gunblade drop to the ground. “What the hells is wrong with you!? Why would your master have come out here after sending you in the first place! And kidnapping people!? Did you think for a moment that his requests were unreasonable for a young boy,” Natsu yelled, scolding Fuyu’li loudly in a huff.
“Uh…is that really Natsu,” Keith whispered to Minti, getting a confused shrug.
“I-I thought it strange! N-Natsu let go!”
“NO! Not until you come to your senses! You’ve been made a fool and have upset a lot of people because of it,” Natsu continued before stumbling forward into her friend as the platform suddenly started to grind on the rails. Ahead, the cart had loosened from the coupler and was had started to speed off ahead of them while they slowed and started to wobble. Soon, screams sounded out through Central Thanalan, before nine splashes followed by a loud crash a bit farther down the tracks.
