Alchemist's Hammer Weapon (hammer), legendary (requires attunement)

This sturdy-looking hammer appears to be made of silver metal and has alchemical inscriptions along the handle. When held, the user feels a gentle vibration of magical energy running through the weapon.

The Alchemist's Hammer weighs 4 pounds and requires magical attunement to be used. It can only be attuned by a character who has the "Master Alchemist" trait or who has at least 5 levels in the alchemist class.

Magical Properties

Transmutation: Once per day, the user can use the power of the hammer to transmute any metal object (except gold and silver) into gold or silver. The object must have a maximum weight of 100 pounds and must be in direct contact with the hammer for at least 1 hour to complete the transmutation.

Bludgeoning Attack: The Alchemist's Hammer is a bludgeoning weapon that deals 1d8 + Strength modifier damage.

Resilient: The Alchemist's Hammer has magical durability and cannot be destroyed by conventional means.

However, I tried to make the items work independently of any subclass and not be limited to Paladins.  The Watcher’s Armament consists of 4 separate items. A legendary cleaver that was once used to hunt and execute evil magic users, a helm that magically shields your mind, a hooded mantle that muffles the sound of your armor, and a powerful set of plate armor specifically designed to even the odds against dangerous extraplanar predators.  These bound items interact as additional items in the set are acquired. These new features are listed as Armament Interactions. The first of these items is the Spellcleaver. This previously shared item has a few minor changes and a new Armament Interaction feature. I love home brewing magic items! Imagine an elven moon blade lost to time, dormant since it was plunged into an undead monster and its wielder perished. Name Ardreth’Pel is found by a non elf adventurer. It seems special but obviously dormant. Starting as a +1. Then as the blade awakens it desires to reconnect with its prior wielder. It’s not malevolent but it has developed a ��curse”. Over time the sword changes the adventurer into the elf that last attuned to the blade. In personality, memory, and appearance. Maybe they notice gold flecks show up in their eyes. Then complexion and height change. Ears get points, and so on. They wake up thinking they are the elf for awhile. Or they have dreams that are memories of another life. Great way to tie a player to the story and lore of the campaign. Eventually more magic properties manifest, maybe the player multiclasses and keeps the sword. Now living a life with another past life bonded to them and a new body. Or maybe they struggle to stop the transformation and end the curse. A great story hook there too. . Horrible Homebrew: The Compaxe

Weapon (any axe), rare

Background:

An axe with a long metal hilt curving into a wide but short triangular blade, painted with red markings on either end of the head. The head is made of a specially tempered alchemical alloy making it lighter when moving towards the north pole of the planet. This peculiar weapon was created for an alchemy masterwork exam by Gillagain Lynchburg. The special alloy tempering techniques used as well as the sheer absurdness of the weapon (which according to rumors was only created because of a bet Gillagain struck with their friends). They earned the title of Master of Alchemy, and helped improve the accuracy of sailing and adventuring compasses while lowering their price mark. While many copies of the axe are in circulation recreating, the original still stands in the hall of fame of the Latwiak Brewmore School of Potioneering and Metalwork, facing north.

Description: You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. Additionally, you can always tell which way is north based on the tilting of the weapon. When attacking with the weapon, if your target is within a 60ft cone to the north of you, you gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls and a -2 penalty if the target is within a 60ft cone south of you.

I haven’t updated this Tumblr in a while- but the game isn’t dead. I’ve been working hard on the backend and trying not to get too distracted.  I’ve finished a LOT of new things this year though, so hopefully I’ll be sharing them here and on the Facebook group and also on the new website We released a new version of the game in May 2020 (We usually release new versions in May, because it’s my birthday) And it had MANY new features including an armor shop, 6 new cantrip spells, and 6 new magic items. It also bumped the card count from 54 to 72.  If there is a 2021 update, it will probably be VERY minor, and only things like changes to shop prices in the armory and updating the title Logo on the box. New Cantrips-

In Age of Exploration, cantrips are designed to be your out of combat spells that players can use to express creativity, and solve puzzles in unusual ways without worrying that they’re expending a spell slot. 

Remember that storytelling is free-flowing and most importantly collaborative in AoE, and players are encouraged to ask things like “Can I concentrate to extend the duration of charm and have the guard lead us directly to the wizard’s sanctum?”

Storyteller: Yes, you can, but as soon as you run into another guard they’re going to question where you’re going and why you’ve charmed their co-worker.

Player 2: “Can the 3 of us combine the effects of waterspout, airstream and frostify to make a blizzard that kills all the guards?”

Storyteller: No, you can’t use it to deal damage, but with all 3 of you working together it will be pretty powerful, and big enough to obscure vision around the entire tower.

Player 3: “Can I cast telepathy, then concentrate to maintain that link while I sneak around the back?”

Storyteller: Yes, but you can’t cast any other spells while you do, or you’ll break the link.

As you can see from these examples- Cantrips are very versatile, but storytellers can always impose limits to keep the game interesting

Cantrips In Combat-

In Combat there is a now a fixed set of potential effects that all cantrips can have. They are very minor and generally worse than making a basic weapon attack. The upside: they all have some amount of range and can be cast even when you’re Exhausted at 0 hit points. 

Here’s the list of what they can potentially do:

Give advantage to a player's next attack or dodge roll

Move a player or enemy 1 space

Knock an enemy down

Deal 1 or 2 magical damage (flip a coin)

Root a target (5 movement to break)

Heal a player or yourself +1 HP (but not above 10)

+3 Elemental damage to a player's next weapon attack

End ongoing effects on one target

Block the next damage source this turn to a target

Create, Summon, or charm, something that makes an attack which deals 3 damage on a hit

Players should describe how they imagine the spell, and the storyteller will arbitrate the effect it has on the target. For example, if a player says “I cast ‘web’ at their feet, covering their boots in sticky spiderwebs, tethered to the ground.” That’s a great description! The storyteller has a choice about how it plays out- They could be rooted in place, tripped and knocked down, or give a player advantage on their next attack because they’re unable to dodge. 

Magic Weapons We’ve playtested many many magic weapons over the course of AoE history, and these are the 8 favorites. They are definitely powerful, and represent a step up from the basic weapons. Some are more powerful than others and that’s intended. One thing I love about these 8 is that each one represents one of the elements of Alterra. Our Artist, Aikurisu (nsfw) puts a stone of elemental amber into each of these weapons. You can probably Match the elements yourself- so just a reminder the 10 elements are: Earth Fire Air Water Ice Wood Lightning Metal Wood and Shadow (2 of them are not represented by magic weapons yet, but I’ll work on that.)  This is getting really long, so I’ll talk about the Armory in its own post.

Trying to refocus so I’m using some of this time to update and revise (in some cases redraw) more old items to the new Instagram format. I am also slowly creating item (and spell) cards for printing and sharing on VTT. I hope everyone is staying safe and sane.  🔮 ��𝙩𝙚𝙢 𝙐𝙥𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙚 Shadow Fan Weapon (dagger), rare (requires attunement)  In the right hands this elegant fan can be both beautiful and deadly.  The fan is mechanically considered a +1 magic weapon (dagger). On a miss, the fan returns to the thrower's hand.  Tessenjutsu. At the start of each of your turns you can choose to increase your AC by +1 or deal an additional 1d4 Necrotic damage with weapon attacks made with the fan. Your choice lasts until the beginning of your next turn.  Shadow Dance. The fan has 3 charges that replenish at dusk. As you hold the fan and weave it in intricate patterns, wisps of shadow trace its movements. You can use your action to expend charges to cast Hypnotic Pattern (DC 15) or Blur. The spells are depicted as shadows weaving through the air or shifting and wavering as they intertwine your body. Hypnotic pattern expends 2 charges and Blur expends 1.  All critiques and comments are encouraged, welcome, and considered. Items are continuously revised based on follower feedback and playtesting. Finished items are uploaded to @dndbeyond and to freely use in your campaign. Errata and item cards can be found for on my Patreon.
