Magick of Australian Fleabane
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Considered a noxious weed by agriculturalists, Fleabane and it's varieties are actually some of the most potent spiritual plants.
Used for exorcisms, protection and chastity magick, Fleabane is a great alternative to burning Sage for cleansing and Spiritual purposes as this baby packs a punch when it comes to cleansing negative energy.
It's completely resistant to pesticides which makes its protective quality incredibly strong and can grow in some of the most inhospitable environments, making it extremely resilient.
Harvest and dry it to use in regular smoke cleansing just like you would sage or other herbs.
Happy Witching

The Poison Path
Tumblr media
The Poison Path is a unique and intriguing aspect of witchcraft that involves the use of psychotropic and toxic plants in rituals, spellwork, and other magickal practices. This ancient and often misunderstood path offers profound insights into the relationship between humanity and the natural world, emphasizing the transformative power of these potent botanicals. These plants are often referred to as 'baneful herbs' and have been used for centuries in various cultures for their powerful effects on the mind and body. The term "Poison Path" highlights the dual nature of these plants- they can heal or do harm, depending on the knowledge and intent of the practitioner.
History
The use of toxic plants in magick dates back to ancient times. Many traditional witchcraft practices involved the use of these potent herbs for ritual, divination, and healing. Plants like belladonna, henbane, and mandrake were commonly used by witches and herbalists for their medicinal and mind altering properties.
In his book, Veneficium: Magic, Witchcraft, and the Poison Path, Daniel A. Shulke delves into the historical and cultural significance of these plants. He explains that the knowledge of toxic plants was highly guarded and often passed down through generations of practitioners.
"Toxic plants have been used not only for their physical effects, but also for their symbolic and spiritual significance. They represent the balance of life and death, healing and harm."
Tumblr media
Practices of the Poison Path
Practitioners of the Poison Path use toxic plants for various purposes, including:
• Rituals and Ceremonies- Baneful herbs are often used in rituals to induce altered states of consciousness, allowing witches to commune with spirits, deities, and otherworldly entities.
• Divination and Scrying- The mind altering effects of certain plants can enhance divination practices, helping seers gain deeper insights and visions.
• Healing and Protection- Despite their toxic nature, many of these plants have medicinal properties and are used in small, controlled doses for healing or protection.
Words of Warning
These plants have varying toxicities and some have the potential to sicken or kill. Do plenty of research before injesting, using herbs topically, or burning them. Then do some more research, just to be sure. With common sense, these botanicals make powerful additions to any working and are absolutely worth using. By approaching this path with respect, caution, and proper knowledge, one can unlock profound insights and enhance your magickal practices.

Herb Spotlight: Fleabane
Tumblr media
Guess what bitches? It's ~Fleabane Season~
Fleabane is a "weed" (i.e., a wildflower in the Erigeron family) that is prevalent throughout North America, and grows like crazy if left to prosper in meadow-y areas. It looks very similar to domesticated daisies, albeit much smaller in flower size, more akin to German Chamomile. There are actually many different types of Fleabane, and the color of the petals can vary from white to yellow, or even a pinkish/purpley color. It's a composite flower, and it will have many flower heads per stem. Neat, huh?
Anyways, Fleabane had been used for thousands of years in North America by the indigenous peoples. It has both a variety of magickal and medicinal uses!
Magickal uses include:
Exorcism. Yes, like banishing-bad-sprits type of exorcism, along with banishment of negative energies. Burn it as you would any other herb bundle (sage, rosemary, cedar, etc) to exorcize a space of any negative entity or energy.
You can also use it to protect yourself by preventing bad spirits from arriving by hanging it around your home - either in bundles, or small sachets. Can be done in combination with St. John's Wort, wheat, and a few capers for best effect.
The seeds of the Fleabane flower tossed between the bedsheets promotes chastity. I guess if you really need someone (or yourself) to remain celibate for a time, this can come in handy - especially if the person co-sleeps with a partner.
Alignments of: feminine aspect, the planet Venus, and the element of Water.
Along with the metaphysical uses of Fleabane, there is a wide variety of medicinal uses for this plant (note: I am not a medical doctor. Do not take this as medical advice. Consult a physician or certified herbalist if you plan on taking it for any of these... ahem... more serious uses).
Medicinal uses include:
To reduce inflammation. Can be used in a poultice or a tea to treat inflammation about the body.
Wound ointment. Traditionally, the Cherokee made an ointment using the herb and tallow to made a balm or salve for cuts and scrapes, as it has astringent properties.
You can steep it in a Witch Hazel Extract solution to further enhance the astringent properties for use on skin.
The roots can be boiled in water to make a solution for "menstruation troubles" (i.e., to bring about a miscarriage. Dangerous. Do not do this).
Drinking a tea can also help break fevers and treat symptoms of the common cold
A diuretic, can help with certain kidney conditions (consult a doctor for this one to make sure no medications you are taking with interfere with its use. Do not use if you have a history of kidney disease) by breaking up any of the smaller particulates that would lead to kidney stones
Using the herb as an incense and inhaling the smoke can be used to treat head colds
Has antioxidant and neuroprotective properties from something called caffeic acid, which this plant has LOTS of!
Aids in digestion and can be used to treat diarrhea
May help with passive bleeding or minor hemorrhaging by being applied directly to the wound (don't take this advice, go to the fuckin ER)
Had been shown in some circumstances to inhibit the growth of cancerous tumors (for the love of God, see a doctor for this, don't take the advice of a post on tumblr dot com to treat cancer)
Isn't this plant so cool? And you cloud have it growing in your yard right now! I know I do, because I harvested a fuck ton of it today, evidenced here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm going to dry all of these bundles and process them into cut and shifted leaves/stems and flowerheads. The two small bundles in the middle will be hung from the ceiling to ward off negative spirits and energies.
Now for some fun facts!
Despite the name Fleabane and the association of repelling fleas and ticks, there is no proven evidence that this works... at least for the dried herbs. I haven't found any studies on this for live plants.
The entire plant is edible, and is high in vitamin C! It was used to treat scurvy, and the cooked leaves taste like spinach (you can eat them raw, but there's little hairs all over it, which are not pleasant to consume)
These plants are high in caffeine! If you make a tea out of the flower heads the same way you would Chamomile, you get a nice floral tea with a kick to start your day off right.
Remember kids! I am *not* a doctor, so don't be using this to treat some weird ailment or cancer. And please, for the love of God, do some research on herbs before you use them medicinally. But in terms of the metaphysical properties, go ham! Have a blast! Banish that weird ghost in your house that likes to watch you pee!
And as always, have fun with your craft!

Magickal body oils
Some things to consider when making body oils.
What are the skin benefits of the non toxic plants you are using?
Do any of the plants you intend to use irritate the skin in any way? Some plants are capable of irritating the skin such as Prairie Fleabane, which can cause mild dermatitis.
Are any of the plants you intend to use toxic or poisonous? Do not use toxic or poisonous plants ever on the skin. The skin absorbs anything put on it, such as, lotions, balms, and oils. Never use harmful substances in skin or body oils.
Do not use any plant, herb, or flower that you are allergic to.
After rinsing jars or bottles for making your oils, make certain the container is completely dry. Using a container with water on the inside, will result in molding botanicals. To increase the shelf life of the oil, make certain there is no water mixed with your base oil.
Always seek the advice of a medical professional. Some herb and plant material can interact with medications. Bring up any concerns you have with your primary care physician.
Discontinue use of any product which irritates the skin or that which you have any reaction to.
Remember if you want a product with less plant matter that you can strain your oil. First let the herbs stay in the oil in indirect sunlight for a few weeks to infuse the oil. This is the folk method of infusing botanical oils.
There are safe ingredients you can use to color your oils to make them more appealing.
Mica powders are safe for cosmetic use to color your oils.
Scent: Flower Circle
Half a blend of botanicals and fragrance oils, with a touch of rose and ritual, this oil is perfect for the green, hedge, or fae witch.
Intention: Love. Botanicals used relate in symbolism to loving intentions.
Medicinal Qualities: Soothes and softens skin, while reducing lines and wrinkles.
Ingredients:
Base oil.
Banded Agate.
Rose petals.
Three Virginia spiderwort petals.
Witch's money bag leaves.

This blend was foraged locally from the yard of this hedge witch. Every medicinal and magickal ingredient was fully researched and lovingly dried and added to the base oil. This is an oil, that as I write this, I am preparing myself.
Using rose to soften skin and narrow leaf sundrop to reduce wrinkles this is a great oil for the intention of love. Magick and medicine are combined in hedge witch fashion.

Protect Yourself
Being able to protect yourself is one of the wonderful things about the craft. Heres a list of some ways to do so. 👻
🧂Salt circles// When preforming a ritual, meditating and so on. They are basically protective barriers. If you have a broom, sweep away negative energy then lay the salt circle.
☆Sachets// These are bags that are sewn together. They are comprised of herbs. The traditional fabric to use is muslin, but any fabric will do.
👝Charm bag// These are bags that basically carry a magick spell. They can be filled with any charged items such as, stones, crystals, charms, herbs, oils, etc.
💎Crystals// One thing amazing about crystals is that they have many properties to them. Carrying some around may help. Black crystals, like obsidian or hematite will relfect negative energy. Smokey quartz will cloak you.
☆Spell jar// These are wonderful for sacred spaces and houses.
➰Sigil// Create and activate a protection sigil.
🦇Spirit animal// if you have a spirit animal, you can call them and ask for protection.
⛓Iron// hanging an iron horsehoe, open end facing down above your door to keep evil spirts out.
👀Visualization// basic meditation with a process of visualization.
♡~ This is one of the things i learned very early on as a witch. Basically, you stand outside your property. Close your eyes and start to breathe in and out. Visualize each chakra opening, kind of like meditation. When you open your last chakra, root, ensure your visualizing your roots going straight to the earths core. Then, use the power from those roots to encase a protective barrier around your house. Imagine the color of it. Imagine it pushing the spirits away from your house. ~♡

Herbs and Their Witchy Names
Tumblr media
original graphic by: LorelainW
One of the things you might notice when working with spells is they call for some different ingredients. For example, eye of newt, wool of bat, toe of frog. To some who happen across these spells it can help lend to some of the fear surrounding witches because some of the ingredients may seem a bit bizarre. However, you will often find that seldom will those ingredients be literal. For example, if you see eye of newt in a spell, you are not going go out and get an actual eye from a newt. It actually refers to mustard seed.
The reason we have these names, stems from ancient times when it was not safe to keep spells about. So to protect the craft these names would be used instead. Some of them are just Old English, and some even date back to ancient China. A lot of times, you will find that the name is based on what the herb resembles. You will also find that many witches still use these names to this day. The more you work with magick and spell work the more familiar with these names you will become. I wanted to provide you with a basic list that you can use to work with as you are becoming familiar with working with them. As you find more you can add more to it.

Protection & Warding ⚔
A guide on protecting yourself and your home.
Note: this is a long post!
Personal Protection
Wear an amulet on your person - can be made from man-made or natural materials so long as its intent is to protect
Keep a protective crystal in your pocket
Craft a small protective spell jar and keep on your person
Anoint yourself with a protective oil
Place an energetic shield around yourself
Place a glamour on yourself to go unnoticed in the presence of harmful or negative energies
Carry a piece of iron on your person
Bathe with a wash made from protective herbs
Sleep with a sachet of herbs under your pillow or hanging above your bed to prevent nightmares
Prayers and offerings to your patron deity
Hang a protective amulet from the rearview mirror in your vehicle for safe travels
Home & Hearth Protection
Hang rose stems with thorns intact above the entrance of your home
Hang an upside down horseshoe above the entrance of your home (some lore states you should hang the horseshoe right-side-up)
Hang wind chimes or bells outside of your home
Create a “Witch Bottle” and bury in your front yard, or in a potted plant on your porch
Create a “Witch’s Ladder” or “Witch Ball” and hang it either inside or outside of your home
Hang imagery of protective symbols outside or around your home
Burn protective incense in your home
Create a room spray made from protective oils and spray around your home
Create a protective wash and use it to clean your windows, door frames, and tile/wooden floors
Use the wash mentioned above to “paint” symbols of protection on the outside of your front door, on your porch, etc.
Place a protective crystal at each corner inside your home
Place a small glass of salt at each corner inside your home
Hammer 3 iron nails into your front door
Create a protective powder and sprinkle around the perimeter of your home - alternately, sprinkle outside of your front and back door
Create a sachet filled with protective herbs and crystals - keep inside or outside of your home, in your vehicle, etc.
Hang mirrors inside of your home
Place a crystal grid at the center of your home using protective crystals
Call upon your patron deity to protect your home and those who reside in it

Having knowledge of herbs and plants (either magically or medicinally) during the Middle Ages, often was reason enough to accuse a woman of being a "witch,” so there is no doubt some of the country folk at the time took these herbal folk names literal.  Chances are, these names were used merely as descriptors to help remember them easier.  Most plants were given names descriptive of their uses and others were given names for something they generally resembled. Spells written by witches in ancient times were often written with such descriptors, which personally i believe to be a form of secret coding.
Here is a small list of “witchy” herb names (most of these are already floating around the community) that you can use in your craft when you create your spells.  This list could be a great addition to any Grimoire and i hope you find them as useful as i do.

      🌕 Moonbeam Ward 🌕
With the rise of the full moon this evening, I feel as though it’s a perfect time to cleanse and ward your space.
Ingredients & items:
·         Visualization
·         Basic knowledge of shielding and energy work
·         Lemon essential oil or lemon peels
Instructions:
1.       At sunset, or when the moon is visible in the sky, begin by cleansing your space using either lemon essential oil or lemon peels (lemon corresponds with both cleansing and lunar energy)  - you can use these in whatever manner you choose, but some ideas include steam cleansing, crafting a spray to use in your home, making a floor wash, etc.
2.       Once you feel as though your space is sufficiently cleansed, it’s time to put up a fresh ward - you may do this next part inside or outside so long as you can see the moon.
3.       Visualize a moonbeam shining down onto your home, engulfing it in a ball of light, thus providing a shield to repel negative energy (you can use your hands or a wand to physically direct lunar energy down from the moon and onto your home if that helps).
4.       Meditate on your intent as you do this, which is to prevent the entrance of negative or unwanted energy into your space.
5.       When finished, seal the shield at the top of the ball of moonlight, sending any unused energy back into the cosmos.
6.       Renew this shield during each full moon.
 Lunar Eclipse Water 🌕🌞
Lunar Eclipse water can be used for matters involving illumination, revealing secrets, unveiling hidden knowledge, healing, protection, and divination.
Items:
·         Clean, clear container
·         Water (the source doesn’t matter)
·         Optional: a sigil or statement of intent written on paper
Instructions:
1.       On the day of the lunar eclipse (August 7th), fill your container with water and set outside or in your windowsill before the peak of the eclipse (the time will depend on your location)
2.       Program the jar to absorb energy from the eclipse - you can use visualization to accomplish this, or set the jar on top of the sigil/statement I mentioned above
3.       Remove the jar before the eclipse ends and store in a cool, dark place
Note: this eclipse will only be visible to those who reside in Australia, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

☀️ magickal tips for the august 21st eclipse 🌑
on august 21st, during the new moon in leo, the moon will pass in front of the sun in a total solar eclipse. with three planets in leo and five planets total in fire signs, this is a great time to cast spells that deal with power, authority, creativity, justice, starting new projects, and personal empowerment.
to fully utilize the energy of this eclipse, i would highly recommend timing your spell to occur during the exact moment of the eclipse. in my opinion, it doesn’t matter if you can see the eclipse or not. those of us who practice cosmic witchcraft draw from the energy of the stars often, and light pollution prevents us from fully viewing the night sky. in this instance, timing is far more important than location.
planetary placements:
·         ☉ ♌ (sun in leo)
·         ☽ ♌ (moon in leo)
·         ☿ ♍ (mercury in virgo)
·         ♀ ♋ (venus in cancer)
·         ♂ ♌ (mars in leo)
·         ♃ ♎ (jupiter in libra)
·         ♄ ♐ (saturn in sagittarius)
·         ♅ ♈ (uranus in aries)
·         ♆ ♓ (neptune in pisces)
·         ♇ ♑ (pluto in capricorn)
aspects:
·         sun conjunct moon
·         sun/moon trine saturn & uranus
·         sun/moon conjunct mars
·         mercury oppose neptune
·         venus square jupiter, quincunx saturn, square uranus, oppose pluto
·         mars sextile jupiter, trine saturn/uranus, quincunx pluto
·         jupiter sextile saturn, semisquare neptune, square pluto
·         saturn trine uranus, square neptune
·         neptune sextile Pluto
spellcasting tips:
·         eclipses are all about balance, and the placements of this eclipse are all about balancing fiery energy with the rest of our solar system’s major cosmic players. (see more on eclipses and balance here.)
·         the moon is dimming the light of the sun, but this powerful event is taking place in the sun’s sign leo. further empowered by a near conjunction with mars, and two trines by this fiery trio to saturn and uranus, these planets are in excellent alignment to help you chase your ambitions in a measured, balanced way. exercise the caution and discipline of saturn and utilize uranus’s intuition and creativity.
·         be sure to consider the planets that are not currently in a fire sign to emulate the balance of the eclipse, particularly jupiter, which is the only planet in an air sign. i would suggest deliberately incorporating tools or representations for air to ensure your spell isn’t lacking in the element’s positive qualities.
·         if you won’t be able to sit down and take some time to cast your spell during the eclipse, you can prepare your spell beforehand and leave things to charge until a predetermined time during the eclipse. set aside five minutes to cast your spell, in whichever way you choose, from wherever you are during the hours of the eclipse.
o    from work, you could draw a sigil that will activate a spell jar at home.
o    sit down at your desk or in the break room and visualize the eclipse from space, seeing the moon’s shadow upon the earth, envisioning the fused solar and lunar energy filling you to the brim with power.
o    create a sachet, spell jar, necklace, or some other magical object and leave it outside to charge in during the hours of the eclipse.
☀️ eclipse magick 🌕
An eclipse takes place when one celestial body passes in front of another, obstructing the light we can see from it here on Earth. Since eclipses always take place during the most powerful phases of the lunar cycle, eclipses are great times for extra powerful spells! To find out when you’ll next be able to view an eclipse, take a look at this website.
Solar Eclipses take place during the New Moon.
·         A partial solar eclipse takes place when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are not quite perfectly aligned, and the Moon only covers a portion of the Sun.
·         A total solar eclipse takes place when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are perfectly aligned, and the Moon passes right through the Sun’s center, creating a bright ring of visible sunlight.
·         Intents: destroy the things that are holding you back, starting something new, healing, drawing something to you, shadow work, balancing the conscious mind and unconscious
·         Ideas for extra powerful spells: Take note of the planetary placements and see if there are any other planets conjunct/aspect with the Sun and the Moon. Draw on those energies as well! Use as much planetary energy as possible to give power to your new beginning.
·         Tips for Safe Viewing:
o    NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT A SOLAR ECLIPSE. EVER.
o    View through a solar filter
o    View through Welder’s goggles with a rating of 14 or higher
o    Some telescope companies offer metal-coated filters that allow safe viewing of the Sun through a telescope
o    Build your own pinhole projector
Lunar Eclipses take place during the Full Moon.
·         A total lunar eclipse occurs when the entire Moon is covered by the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, its umbra.
·         A partial lunar eclipse occurs when part of the Moon is covered by Earth’s umbra.
·         A penumbral lunar eclipse takes place when the Moon travels through the faintest part of Earth’s shadow.
·         Intents: healing, protection, finishing projects, illuminating the unknown, balance, manifestation, peace
·         Ideas for extra powerful spells: Again, draw on the planetary placements - but since the Sun and the Moon are in opposition during a full moon, this time see which planets are conjunct/aspect with the Sun and the Moon individually. A lunar eclipse is a great way to balance opposing forces in your life and you can draw on the energies of other planets to help resolve the solar and lunar forces!
·         Tips for Safe Viewing:
o    Although it’s perfectly safe to view a lunar eclipse with the naked eye, please don’t trespass or venture into the wilderness alone.
 Cosmic Witchcraft 101 🌠
lunaesteria:
One of the questions I find myself answering a lot is “how do I get into cosmic witchcraft?” Although @phaesphore has a really good guide (here), I thought I’d write out a few of my own suggestions.
Who:
·         Who can be a cosmic witch?
o    Anyone can be a cosmic witch! The main aspects of cosmic witchcraft include working with the various celestial bodies included in the cosmos, and harnessing energy from them depending upon your intent. If you feel drawn to the cosmos and the vastness of outer space, then cosmic witchcraft is definitely for you.
What & Why:
·         Figure out what aspects of cosmic witchcraft that you are drawn to
o    Is it your fascination with outer space? Is it the desire for a spiritual relationship with the cosmos? There are many reasons someone might be drawn to this practice, so do some digging and figure out yours.
·         Which celestial bodies do you want to work with and why?
o    This ranges from planets, to stars, to constellations, and various deep space objects. Each celestial body has its own set of correspondences and associations, some that may resonate more with you than others.
o    Still at a loss? Complete your birth chart and figure out your dominant planet - birth charts show the alignment of the planets at the time of your birth. Each person has a dominant planet, which can be found in more detailed birth charts that you can complete online.
o    To find your dominant planet, go to Astro.com > click “extended chart selection” on the right hand side > fill out the necessary information > choose “Pullen/Astrolog” > from the dropdown menu, select “simple chart delineation by Walter Pullen” > scroll about ½ or ¾ of the way down the page until you find a section that lists the percentages of the planets in your chart > the planet with the highest percentage would be considered your dominant planet.
·         What kind of spells do you like to perform?
o    Each celestial body has their own set of correspondences to choose from depending on your intent.
§  Planetary Associations
§  Celestial Body Correspondences
