ARC V MONTH DAY 3 - Duetto of Duelist and Spirit

I don't own any physical copies of YuGiOh cards presently, but I remember having a fondness for the Magicians of Astromancy and Chronomancy, Yuuya's first Pendulum Summons. I don't know, I really liked their designs and they were just so cool. I did write one fic starring both of them, though it was basically the smallest of drabbles. A cute little 'duel spirits care about their owners and worry about them' kind of thing. Kinda cringe looking back at it, lol.

Goodness me, these are peak design. I do remember being a little more partial to Chronomancy though. More drawn to his darker colors in contrast to Astromancy. I see them as brothers, not by blood but you know, friends so close that they could be siblings.

Summary

An unexpected visitor sheds new light on Julian's book of constellations and myths. Altheia's desperate search for her gateway leads her to make a reckless decision to venture to the Arcana realms alone, and only Julian can pull her out - and chance encounters with The Star and Judgement are more than a little revelatory.

"I felt something pulling me, across the lake.  But then the feeling faded, and I walked us right into Valdemar’s trap.” “Is that really what happened?” “Yes,” Altheia said bitterly.  “I nearly got us both killed.” “Hmm.”  Judgement’s trunk curled upwards lazily.  “I don’t think so.” “That’s exactly how it happened,” Altheia said bitterly.  “My ‘intuition’ wasn’t good for much.” The impossibly deep, golden eyes narrowed a little.  “Your intuition wasn’t the problem.  When you stopped listening to it - that was where you made the wrong choice."  They paused, and then added, "But was it really wrong, after all?  You didn't find your gateway, but you found something else, didn't you?" Altheia shifted her weight on her knees as she thought.   "Well, yes.  Valdemar."  "A purpose." Altheia huffed in frustration.  “That doesn’t really help, you know.” “It helps more than you think it does.”

“You… really don’t know what this is, do you?”

“Ah… it’s a book of stars and stories?”

But it was intoned as a question, because suddenly Julian was certain only that it wasn’t just a book of stars and stories.  

“The name didn’t give you a clue?”  Selina was lightly mocking him. 

“I… I didn’t think… no, it didn’t, I didn’t…”

He looked at her helplessly.  Now she smiled gently.

“I won’t pretend to know much about it,” she admitted.  “But I read about a fair few schools of magic before I settled on alchemy.  Astromancers take the science of astronomy, and the magic of astrology, and they make talismans.  Very powerful ones.”

“They do?”

Julian was aware of how stupid he sounded, but for once he couldn’t find any words.

“Like I said, I don’t know all that much about it.  But I do know that these are alchemical…”  She traced around the outer circle again.  “These are planetary, or astrological… or maybe illusory.”  She tilted her head a little as she traced around the inner circle.  “Could be.  Anyway, and then you have the star chart in the centre.  I’d bet that one of those magical symbols is a trigger.”

Julian’s head whirled, partly from disbelief, partly from his underlying mistrust of magic that hadn’t quite faded - despite being in love with a magician - and partly from excitement.  

“Star charts, I understand,” he murmured.  “Alchemy, too… you take something, and you make something else.  I… don’t know about these other symbols, but…  What is it?”

Selina gave a little burst of laughter, of disbelief that Julian still wasn’t understanding.  

“It’s a spell, Julian.  Three different schools - or languages, as you say - alchemy, astrology magic, and astronomy.  Two charges, and a when.  It’s astromancy.”

“What does it do?” 

Selina shrugged.  “I don’t know.  I’m not a magician of any kind.  I don’t even know all the alchemical symbols.”  She flashed him a grin.  “Try it and find out.”

Julian’s breaths quickened, his heart raced, and a cold sweat broke out on his palms and neck.

“I don’t know, I’m not a magician, I know science, the astronomy makes sense, but I don’t know any of the rest of it.”  He pushed his hands through his hair with one hand, the other on his hip.  “And how does it even work?  How do you cast it?  Just… just draw it?”

“I was joking,” Selina said gently.  But then she peered up at him, and he knew how flustered and wild-eyed he must look.  And she hesitantly ventured, “Unless…?”

Julian’s hands were trembling and a sense of panic was coming over him.  He shook his head vigorously and closed the book firmly, pushing it halfway across the table.

“No.  No, I don’t think it’s a, uh…”  he fluttered his fingers.  “a spellbook , or astromancy, it’s quite nonsense I’m sure, and besides which I have no business with it.”  Nodding decisively, he turned from the table and waved his hand in the air as he spoke, looking back over his shoulder at Selina as she followed.  “If there’s one thing I’ve learnt in all my years, it’s not to fool around with magic you don’t understand.”

NIGHTRAID KAIHO ISSUE #1 | A CLASH OF SPELLCASTERS!

The greatly anticipated magicks tournament unfolded in front of NightRaid HQ, captivating audiences and igniting the spirits of aspiring mages and sorcerers. This grand event brought together some formidable magic users, showcasing their talents and unleashing spells of breathtaking magnitude. As the night sky shimmered with the promise of arcane prowess, the competition witnessed some exhilarating battles.

The tournament commenced with a spellbinding duel between Joshua and Krysanthe, mentor and student. Both combatants wove intricate patterns in the air, summoning the power of the stars through their astromancy arts. Explosions of cosmic energy filled the arena as the two masters clashed, creating a spectacle that left the audience in awe. Ultimately, Krysanthe's celestial mastery prevailed, defeating her mentor in a hard-fought victory and setting the stage for an enthralling tournament ahead.

In the next encounter, Kallias and Penelo took center stage, each showcasing their unique magical styles. Kallias employed the mesmerizing art of paper puppet magics, his dragon familiar throwing fiery displays that dazzled the crowd. Penelo, on the other hand, harnessed the raw power of conjury, commanding the elements with grace and precision without a staff to speak of, impressing onlookers. The clash of these two formidable magicians was an intense battle that kept the spectators on the edge of their seats. In the end, Kallias emerged victorious, his blazing pyrotechnics overwhelming Penelo's conjured forces by the narrowest of margins.

Up next against Krysanthe was Ryuu. Well known for her explosive blue magicks, she quickly started the match with a torrent of aether. Spells inspired by wildlife and the elemental forces of her hunts erupted from her fingertips, testing Krysanthe's mettle. Despite that, Krysanthe's unwavering resolve proved insurmountable, and she emerged triumphant, reaffirming her place as a force to be reckoned with.

The stage was set for an epic clash of champions as Kallias faced off against the indomitable Krysanthe in the tournament's final showdown. Kallias employed a combination of his signature paper puppet magics and newfound confidence. Krysanthe, undeterred by the formidable opponent before her, summoned her stellar astromancy powers once more. The impressive dragon familiar mastery against the stellar counterattacks, pushing each combatant to the limits of their magical strength. Ink spilled from the belly of the paper familiar on more than one occasion as Kallias fought back with all of him. In the end, Krysanthe's unwavering determination and mastery of the celestial arts proved too formidable for Kallias to overcome. With a resounding display of astromantic power, Krysanthe emerged victorious as the champion of Nightraid's Magical Tournament.

Hello!!!!!! Yes you may and I, in fact, love you for asking ( ˘ ³˘)♥

I plan to flesh this out more in a proper fic sometime in the undetermined future, but for now, here are some pertinent details!

As for family, Rei has:

a magician grandmother, Ania

two loving parents, Mios and Talia

a younger brother whom she adores, Arion (who’s also like, stupid weak for Portia)

an aunt, her mother’s sister Embri, who used to own the shop (and has had a string of serendipitous one-night-stands with Julian in various seedy ports over the years)

another aunt, this time her mother’s cousin Tana, who works at the Palace library (and has been on-off crushing on Nadia for the better part of like, 12 years, give or take?)

For now we’ll ignore the fact that post-amnesia Rei remembers literally none of them, okay? Okay!

As for her backstory:

Rei was training (a little unwillingly, but needs must) under her grandmother to become the next seer of the Lisuga clan, but strengthening her astromancy magic had the unfortunate side effect of giving her prophetic dreams, most of which involved fire and blood and death and all that good stuff, which, understandably, stressed her out.

(It also had the additional side effect of said stress physically manifesting as fire magic, but that’s another story.)

And so, when the stars started telling her to leave home, she was like? Hmmm no thanks, and (in an admittedly dumbass decision) proceeded to ignore them as much as she could get away with, which had yet another unfortunate side effect of her missing their warning that her (equally dumbass) brother got caught in a squall out at sea. She managed to save him from drowning, thankfully, but the experience (as well as her grandmother’s prodding) made her realize she couldn’t just ignore these (frankly unwanted, thank you very much) prophecies, and so she leaves the clan. Her dad and some of her clanmates sail with her as far as the Prakran capital, and from there she lets the stars guide her to Vesuvia, where she moves in with her Aunt Embri at the shop.

I do not agree with The Hearer that the Draining Ewer causes permanent harm in equivalent exchange to the life it grants. One part of me says this is a fear born of a mistrust of magic instilled by Stillglade Fane; conjurers are taught to fear the judgment of the Elementals and that any violation of the smallest or most capricious rule results in immediate doom. Such religion had a place before the Calamity. The world has moved on.

The other part of me says this is a difference of belief. It is a truth that every Magician -- every one -- holds beliefs on how aether works and can be called forth. It is natural; we work with the ineffable and nearly incomprehensible invisible world behind the curtain of visible reality, and we are limited by our ability to do so only at a distance, only able to see through a keyhole. The only way we can understand what we hear, what we feel, what we think is through the lens of our beliefs. 

It does not surprise me that a conjurer would feel, then, as their power comes from Elementals, that it can only accelerate that which is “natural.” A broken bone naturally heals to be less strong and slightly different than it was before, so some chirurgeons say. Thus it is that a conjurer would see any natural healing as a diminishment, an acceleration of aging.

This principle is rejected by astromancy and arcanima. The former rewrites Fate, such that a seemingly fatal injury has a less dire fate. In a sense, it is a revision of Time itself. Arcanima restores a Pattern to its natural state: the Ideal Form reflected in the geometry of its physical existence. There is no place for the conjurer’s diminishment here. Either the wound did not happen, or it is repaired to its ideal state. The broken bone is identical to what it was before the healing. The Anima Bindings are a work of arcanima; they restore her to her Ideal Form. They are an example of my Will being done, not some fickle creature with at best an only slightly malfeasant stance towards Man. It remains to be seen other effects, such as whether she can age or bear ch

Nonetheless, The Hearer is correct. A regular draining of one’s personal aether surely has effects on natural healing. My scars do not improve. My voice remains mangled. Even magickal healing is limited in its effects, which suggests the truth may yet lie between our beliefs. And yet,

Arc V Headcanon: Yuya can't see Duel Spirits, that much is a given. However, I do believe it was stated in GX (and even some in 5Ds) that you don't have to be able to see spirits to have them. I like to think that there are spirits in Yuya's deck (and not just Odd Eyes) that watch out for him, and are sad they can't do much more besides just try to be there in a duel, especially Timegazer and Stargazer magician. It's why he's lucky enough to draw them a lot.

Mmmm, I like this one, anon! I’ve actually had a similar one regarding Shingo for a while now, where the Underworld Troupe collectively cares about him but are also wary of him at the same time. They know he’s the type to discard his decks. Duel spirits talk amongst themselves, you know.

But getting back to your theory, Yuya’s monsters are just so much like him, I think it’s a given that they would care. And they’re so fun and entertainment oriented, they would likely be hurt whenever he got injured, or wanted to cry, or fell into Bezerk Mode. Astro and Chrono (I’m still calling them this; old habits die hard) would probably be the most alarmed, being more serious looking monsters, and among the first to change into Pendulum monsters.

And Arc V is making a lot of callbacks to the older series’, so it’s pretty safe to say that duel monster spirits are gonna make a comeback. That said, I will be severely disappointed if Yuya’s monsters don’t make an appearance outside of his duels.
