2024 Lexember #8: Khûl

RE: previous Lexember post Mup (2024, #1) - Recall that Qathûq had gathered his sorcerers in pursuit of various magical projects.

Today’s word khûl [kʰɯl] means ‘nerve’ or ‘nervous tissue.’

Spelling: The semantic radical (“meaning” component) on the left side is a body. On the right side is the phonetic radical (“sound”) - which is the previous Lexember word xûl ‘finger joint’ - indicating that this word [kʰɯl] sounds close to [xɯl]. An alternate version of the glyph has the semantic THREAD on the left, because nerves are thread-like.

Now to discuss what we might call Tepatic “brainworms.”

They may be called wet i-khûl ‘worms of the nerve’ or nel-khûl ‘nerve crawlers’ or other other terms. Recall that previous Lexember word nel means ‘crawl’ or ‘slither’ - but also ‘lead astray.’

But my preferred word is khûy khûl [kʰɯj kʰɯl].

Khûy means ‘little i’ and refers to a little mark representing the sound i, which means ‘of’ or ‘that,’ and is written above and next to larger characters in some texts as an abbreviation of sorts.

It is also a colloquial term for small worms, because the tiny half-loop looks like a tiny worm.

Returning back to Qom: Previously said among other things, he sought to create enchanted worms that would crawl under people’s skin and control their minds. This was developed from a disease. There was a legend that a sorcerer long ago had created animate worms from clay, which could move according to his instruction. But the worms escaped into the wild, infesting animals and people. Now free and without any guiding creator, they did not manipulate people in any purposeful way, but still wandered and burrowed, causing shifting sensations and consciousnesses of all sorts. These are the “brainworms,” a rare but feared disease.

Brainworms are difficult to treat, but still easier than sarcopetrosis, which is hopeless. But it is difficult, and often painful. The worms have to be located, and they can move. If they are still crawling under the skin, the skin can be cut open. If they move into organs such as the spinal cord or brain, they can become impossible to remove. They can be suppressed by the use of antimagical drugs such as phasmoctone, but these can also suppress the patient’s own vitality as well. If not used with great care, the patient can die from the treatment as well. On the other hand, the disease is difficult to spread.

Previously Qathûq had expressed interest to his prime minister, Silhen i-Tsyam, in the latter’s teacher Xhalkil, a biologist who pioneered operant conditioning, and wondered about its social uses. He conveyed that to his magicians, who found a diseased patient from whom they could get worms, and develop them into tools - the goal being for magical worms to burrow into people and manipulate internal energy flow, altering it to cause pleasure or pain to control behavior.

After rewatching the Thanks For Watching trilogy, I actually have to double down on my controversial opinion: Hunter never having to directly face off against Belos again after Thanks to Them is actually super satisfying and cathartic in an understated, underrated way. He said everything he needed to say after the worst thing that Belos ever did to him, and from then on, he didn't know it yet but he was free. I'm so happy for him.

A/N: A bit of a different style with this one. Luz discovers a tickle glyph by accident, she details the event in her notes.

“Glyph Combination Attempt #73”

Description: 

Effect: causes a tingling, spark-like sensation of tickling, causing the person in range to laugh uncontrollably for the duration of the effect

Appearance: three rings of concentric circles, light glyph on the right of the outer ring as well as the bottom of the inner ring, plant along the bottom of the middle ring with fire on the top, two fire glyphs on either side of the outer ring light glyph

Possible uses:

Incapacitate the enemy with laughter!

Fighting without damage or causing pain!

Distraction!

Fun prank!

Warnings!!!:

Do not accidentally stand too close when activated!

Be careful how big the glyph is drawn (size and intensity seem to influence how long the effects last)

First-Hand Account #1:

I decided to reserve Wednesday afternoon in my schedule to test out new glyph combinations and see what other types of useful combinations we could come up with to help in the fight against Belos. With the Day of Unity coming up, we could use any extra tricks up our sleeves we could get. 

I stumbled upon an interesting combination today by accident, when I tried to activate this glyph (see attached sketch on the next page) it had an instantaneous effect. I couldn’t believe it… it, well, it tickled!!!! SO much - OMG! Lucky for me, it was only a minute or two before it wore off. It feel like a hundred fingers and tingly shocks all over all my ticklish spots! I just crumpled to the ground. (I’m glad nobody else was around to see that!) I’ll have to test it out further (ALONE! Or maybe on someone else?) and see what its capabilities are.

First-Hand Account #2:

It’s been two days since I accidentally hit myself with the ‘tickle glyph’. I have carefully drawn up another and decided to enlist Eda to help me test it today. 

…

It went hilariously spectacular having Eda try the glyph! She crumpled onto the couch cackling and even tried pulling off her own feet — that didn’t seem to help her though. This one was drawn on a bigger piece of paper and I think it went on a little longer than when I first stumbled on the glyph, but it was a little hard for me to tell how long it was exactly. Eda said she’s going to feed me to the Wumplerampus but I think she’s just bluffing. It was good to see her laugh. I do think, in retrospect now, that perhaps it was not my best idea to teach her this glyph combination…

I’ve decided to create a small stockpile for myself in order to prepare for the worst. And, also, maybe to test them out a bit more with Amity and with the rest of our friends.

I been getting into Sigils and art magic 💙🦌 and into developing my own personal method for creating magic Sigils.

As a starting point, I decided to develop some sigils to correspond to Bríd and The Mórrigán the two deities I've been exploring most, as devotional pieces. The upper Sigil is for Bríd and the lower for The Mórrigán. Each is made based on the name of the Goddess using a modified version of the Austin Osman Spare method in combination with celtic artistic motifs and stylings.

These two I made while practicing the process 💙💙 The smaller of the two is a simple general protection Sigil. The larger is a banishment of transphobia 🏳️‍⚧️

I'm really happy with how these came out, though I do still wanna work on the Mórrigáns Sigil.

Anyone else developing their own Sigil craft?

Wait crying again bc I was rewatching The Intruder today (episode 4 of season 1) and I realized that like. The glyphs represent a few things in the narrative but one thing that's consistent is they're always there when Luz doesn't feel like she's good enough on her own. They appear to her as comfort in moments of self depreciation or self doubt, or she coincidentally learns them in episodes where she faces her fear of rejection or makes a mistake (at least this is true in terms of the first four base glyphs she discovers). It's the titans way of saying "you may have to do things differently, but you can do anything they can do" to Luz bc he cares about her

AND THEN. IN WATCHING AND DREAMING. WHEN THE TITAN PASSES ON AND THE GLYPHS DON'T WORK ANYMORE. IT'S BECAUSE NOW LUZ FINALLY FEELS LIKE SHE'S GOOD ENOUGH, ALL ON HER OWN. SHE'S LEARNED THAT SHE HAS INTRINSIC WORTH AS A PERSON AND SHE DOESN'T NEED TO MAKE UP FOR WHO SHE IS. SHE MIGHT DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY BUT SHE CAN DO EVERYTHING ANOTHER WITCH CAN DO- THIS TIME WITH HER OWN, MORE PERSONAL ACCESSIBILITY TOOL (HER PALISMEN) INSTEAD OF THE ONE THE TITAN GAVE HER. MAN!!!!!
