A self-limiting virus
December 7, 2024
Robert B. Hubbell
We are stuck in a news cycle in which Trump is making mind-numbing nominations, and his henchmen are making ludicrous proposals to eliminate $2 trillion from the budget. This state of affairs will stretch into early January. It is not a good place to be because we are in a partial state of suspended animation, experiencing unrelenting bad news with little room for resistance and action. That will change after the 119th Congress begins on January 6, 2025, and confirmation hearings begin.
As painful as the nomination process has been and will continue to be, it provides a clear view of how Democrats will reclaim Congress and the presidency over the next four years. In short, Trump's nominations and budget proclamations are so outrageously bad that they will act as self-limiting viruses on the future electoral prospects of the GOP.
To be clear, I am not saying that we can sit back and wait for the GOP to implode. I am saying that we should be ready for the implosion and should do everything in our power to accelerate it.
Trump ran on a populist agenda that was filled with lies from start to finish. But many supported Trump because they were fooled by claims he would magically reduce inflation, protect Social Security and Medicare, cut taxes for the middle class, and deport 10 million immigrants in his first year in office—all while reducing federal expenditures by 30%.
Trump supporters who are paying attention to his post-election actions should be experiencing the sinking feeling that they were the “mark” in Trump's con game. They are suddenly hearing proposals to cut Social Security and Medicare, cut veterans’ healthcare, eliminate tax credits for childcare and dependents, allow pharma companies to raise the prices of prescription drugs, and extend tax cuts for the rich while imposing tariffs on tens of thousands of everyday consumer items.
Even if Trump's supporters haven’t started to get that sinking feeling yet, they will—and soon. The painful epiphany that they have been duped is inevitable. Trump's delusional belief that he has a “mandate” is encouraging him to swing for the fences in the ballpark of depravity.
As I wrote yesterday, we must distinguish between what Trump says he will do and what he can actually accomplish. While the damage inflicted will be bad, it won’t be as bad as his outlandish promises. Our job is to make Trump and the GOP choke on every ridiculous, mean-spirited, half-baked, greedy, out-of-touch, oligarchical proposal designed to enrich Trump and his already-rich pals—regardless of whether he is able to deliver on them.
One post-mortem criticism about the 2024 campaign with which I agree is that Democrats were “too nice.” While we should always honor the truth, the truth about Trump is much uglier than portrayed in Democratic campaign ads. We can’t repeat that mistake.
The good and bad news is that Trump will make it nearly impossible for us to repeat that mistake in 2026 and 2028. Yesterday, I discussed his obscene proposals to decimate the social safety net and agencies critical to the protection of the health, safety, financial security, and national security of all Americans. Today, the media is highlighting the fact that Trump is intent on creating an oligarchy financed, populated, and run by billionaire donors.
Reporting by the NYTimes this week disclosed that Elon Musk donated a quarter billion dollars to help Trump win. See MSNBC, Here’s how much money Elon Musk spent to help Trump win the election. That staggering amount does not include the combined heft of Musk’s Trump-friendly algorithms and bots that boosted pro-Trump posts and suppressed posts for and by Democrats.
Having his campaign financed by a handful of billionaires has resulted in a cabinet that can only be described as a haven for billionaires (actual and aspiring). See Axios, Trump's billionaires set to take government by storm.
Other nominees of substantial wealth are omitted from the above list because they have effectively concealed their net worth.
One downside of having a government of oligarchs is that they have no conception of the daily struggle faced by most Americans. For example, eliminating Head Start may seem trivial—even virtuous—to a billionaire who will never know food insecurity. However, for hundreds of thousands of children, Head Start provides 50% of their daily intake of calories. Kids can’t learn while they are hungry and undernourished. Musk and Ramaswamy have proposed entirely eliminating Head Start, apparently oblivious to the fact that they are denying a vital source of daily sustenance to hundreds of thousands of children.
The twin aims of the second Trump term seem to be revenge and greed. His nominees have been selected to advance those aims on the backs of the working-class that Trump duped into voting for him. They will eventually figure out that Trump has lied to them—especially if we remind them of that fact in words of one syllable every chance we get.
Concluding Thoughts
We are enduring the painful part of the cycle as Trump announces nominations designed to destroy the federal government while enriching his wealthy friends. We must remember that Trump is sowing the seeds of the GOP’s defeat with every outrageous nomination and ludicrous pronouncement. If we can hold that thought, we can make it through the next few months. Don’t cringe and cower; remember and prepare. The 2026 midterms have already started—and Trump is undermining his party every day. Let’s do everything in our power to leverage Trump’s depravity to our advantage.

Satanachia's Shower Spell for Cleansing and Protection By Pearl Satanachia
I designed Satanachia’s Shower Spell for Cleansing and Protection to create opportunities to connect with Satanachia throughout my week. Showers are great for cleansing yourself of negative energies and forces that work against you. Taking magical showers also helps you boost your intuition, psychic development, and ability to attract/manifest your desires. (Pro-tip: Your daily shower is the perfect time to practice visualization!) Satanachia is a demon who rules over the moon and water, which makes shower time ideal for connecting/working with them. Satanachia is also a fierce protector, so this spell will also provide you with their protection as well.
This spell only consists of 4 steps, which also makes it easy to work into your shower routine. I intended for this shower spell to be accessible and easy to customize according to your shower routine. Feel free to personalize this spell in whatever way(s) that will make it more doable and meaningful for you. Being familiar with Satanachia’s Correspondences and other relevant information will help you personalize this spell according to your shower routine and comfort level. I have left a blank space before each mention of the word "moon" so you could easily insert the moon's current phase or zodiac sign into this spell.
Items needed:
Functioning Shower
Soap
Shampoo and/or Conditioner (if you use either product)
Enter the running shower. Mentally or aloud, repeat Satanachia’s enn 6 times, then invite them into your shower space:
Furca Na Alle Laris Satanachia! Furca Na Alle Laris Satanachia! Furca Na Alle Laris Satanachia! Furca Na Alle Laris Satanachia! Furca Na Alle Laris Satanachia! Furca Na Alle Laris Satanachia! Please be present with me at this moment and onward. So mote it be!
2. As you soak yourself in water, think or speak (something similar to) the following words. Visualize and/or simply feel the water washing off your body, mind, and spirit as you think or speak these words:
Hail Satanachia! I honor, love, and respect you with all of my heart. By your infernal powers of the _______ moon and water, please cleanse me of all negative energies, harm, and forces that work against my best interest or well-being. Satanachia, I pray for your full protection so I am safe and free from all negative energies, harm, and forces that work against my best interest or well-being. Thank you, Satanachia. So mote it be!
How each person experiences Satanachia’s energy cleansing them is different. Personally, I visualize and intuitively "feel" Satanachia’s cleansing/protective energy as a light blue glow that has flecks of silver floating throughout it. This energy cleanses and protects me as it flows through me and around me. Some people might sense the water cleansing their aura, while others may simply feel more relaxed or calm. How you experience Satanachia’s presence, powers, and energies is unique to your personal connection with Satanachia.
3. As you work the shampoo/conditioner into your hair and/or soap onto your body, keep visualizing/feeling Satanachia’s energy flowing within and around you. After you do that, as you go back in the water to rinse off your product(s), think or speak the following words:
Hail Satanachia! You are infinite in your strength, glory, and wisdom. By your infernal powers of the _____ moon and water, please cleanse, bless, and empower me so I thrive in the most meaningful ways possible. Satanachia, I call upon your full protection so I am safe and free from all negative energies, harm, and forces that work against my best interest or well-being. Thank you, Satanachia. So mote it be!
Keep Satanachia’s energy flowing within and around you. Their presence will also grow within and around you. If you're able to, visualize Satanachia’s energy as a blue glow enveloping you and your aura. If you can’t visualize, mentally “pull”/draw forth Satanachia’s energy from above you until you feel your body, mind, and spirit are “full” of their energy. As you sense, experience, and embody Satanachia’s infernal energy, know that it cleanses, protects, and empowers every part of you that it reaches.
4. Before you finish showering or leave the bathroom (it’s your choice), thank Satanachia for their cleansing and protection:
Hail Satanachia! It is an honor and a privilege to have you in my life. Thank you for cleansing, blessing, and protecting me so I am safe and free from all negativity, harm, and forces that work against me. Thank you, Satanachia. So mote it be!
This shower spell is perfect to do before spells and rituals, including Satanachia’s Full Moon Ritual. As you connect with Satanachia more often, you will get better at sensing their presence and working with their energy. If you feel Satanachia calling out to you, I strongly encourage you to reach out to them. Even a simple prayer can improve your connection with them.

Leigh plays Tellius prt 6
It's time for the 4-part exp extravaganza that is Day Breaks!
I love how they imply that Soren's heritage gave him pro navigation abilities. Sure, Micaiah gets to see the future, read minds, and heal mortal wounds, but hey! At least Soren doesn't have to worry about getting lost.
I present this without comment.
I'm kind of sad that this forbidden bird magic never gets brought up again. All we know is that it's a song called the Dirge of Ruin. I imagine it's like a magic nuke of some sort? But sadly, we shall never know for sure.
This was the SECOND TIME I had to restart because of Ilyana. And look, I'm not foolish enough to rely on Shade, but twice I accidentally left Ilyana in the danger zone, and both times I was like well maybe she'll be okay. Shade has to trigger sometimes, right?
The answer is no. It never triggers. Shame on me for hoping.
I know what Ike means, but out of context, this line is so funny.
Also, for those of you who are wondering, this is Ike's reaction every time someone tries to set him up on a date.
Is this an unpopular opinion? Maybe it is. But I genuinely love Boyd's stupid Viking helmet and high fur collar. Also that custom-made axe? I named it Throwd.
That was a low blow, Boyd. I love how unamused Mist looks. She already knows he's about to say some dumb shit. I love Boyd, but he does have terminal foot-in-mouth disease, and he 100% deserved the smiting he got from Mist here.
Ike's growing exasperation with Oliver during this scene is so damn funny. I wish I had gotten the satisfaction of killing him, but unfortunately, Janaff swooped in to land the finishing blow before I could even get most of my units over the middle swamp.
I love Ike's genuine wonder during this scene. It's a nice callback to the base conversation with Devdan, where Devdan lectures Ike about slowing down to appreciate the simple pleasures of life, so that he doesn't get burnt out before the war even begins. Ike is a character who ultimately fights for the world and the people in it, because he genuinely cares. He's far from naive or optimistic, but his capacity for love, admiration, and respect for life is so wholesome. The horrors of war and the loss of his father initially makes this difficult for him, as he loses sight of anything but revenge, but Ike's journey is about ultimately remaining true to his character, even as he grows and matures.
I love how Sanaki phrases this: "You will resign yourself." It's clear to her that this is the last thing Ike wants, and doesn't bother to convince him that it's an honor.
Oh, Ike. Even as he resigns himself to receiving peerage, he cannot help but make his disdain for nobility crystal clear. This is another aspect of Ike I love so much. He absolutely despises the upper class, and he does not once try to hide it.
And that's the end of Day Breaks! I managed to get most of my A-team into second tier. I'll probably include an update of everybody's stats in the next post, since this is the halfway point of the game, and I want to get a sense of how close I am to achieving the goals that I set in the beginning.

Stolas 5e Build
The Barnaby post did so well that I decided to go ahead and make a Stolas build as well. 1. Lineage - Winged Tiefling Owlin again for obvious reasons. Alternatively, you could go for the winged tiefling option and reflavor your appearance as an owl. 2. Class - Wizard/Scribes So Stolas powers as far as we have seen them are demonic, celestial and tied to a grimoire. That gives us a few solid options for classes the obvious being Wizard, Warlock, and Cleric with honorable mention to a single subclass of Druid. Wizard and Warlock both can use spellbooks and have access to a lot of the starry/spacey spells as well as creepy/demonic spells. I'll admit, Warlock and Wizard also hedge out the others a bit in my mind for their access to the Flesh to Stone spell. For Wizard Subclasses I would recommend Order of Scribes or Divination School. Order of Scribes really is just Wizard+ allowing to squeeze everything you can out of your spellbook and really helps shine how important the Grimoire is. Divination school fits the scrying we've seen Stolas do in the past, but doesn't give a lot of star flavor otherwise. For Warlock, Pact of the Tome is a given with Fiend Patron being an obvious choice to represent getting his position and power from the Ars Goetia. The Great Old Patron also stands out for it's expanded spell list and the ability to make thralls, befitting the possession Stolas did while in the human world. For Cleric we've got solid choices in Knowledge Domain and Twilight Domain with his god assumedly being Asmodeus (in D&D/Forgotten Realms terms). Knowledge domain fits gleaming supernatural knowledge from the stars, but Twilight Domain has really strong flavor for night and shadow thats difficult to discount plus the subclass is among the game's most powerful. Finally for Druid, Circle of Stars has the strongest starry flavor in the game but the spell list, lack of demonic flavor, and ties to nature just don't scream Stolas to me.
For the purposes of this build I'm going with Order of Scribes Wizard, but any of these options fit the character and have different pros and cons behind them.
3. Background - Noble The Noble background is stand-out choice for Stolas, not much to be said here. 4. Skills For his Wizard Skills I think Arcana and History are the best choices. With the Noble background he gets Persuasion automatically and for it's pure utility I would grab Perception. 5. Stats With +2 Intelligence and +1 Dexterity from Variant Tiefling (Origins) and using point buy I would distribute his stats as follows: Str - 8 Dex - 14 Con - 12 Int - 16 Wis - 12 Cha - 16 Stolas is described as a "scrawny twig ass" by Stella, leading me to believe that most of physical stats are rather poor. Str as our dump stat and only okay Con, we pump Dex for AC and move on. Int is our casting stat so we prioritize it over all others, with finally a middling Cha and a low Wis. You could swap Wis and Cha around tho, and I'd believe you as he has both been a poor read of people and not very personable. 6. Spells Assuming spells for a 3rd level character, here are my recommendations. You want spells that are spooky or starry in flavor, plus just general utility. For Cantrips I'd grab options like Mage Hand, Prestidigitation, Minor Illusion, Dancing Lights. For damage, I'd grab at least one attack roll cantrip such as Ray of Frost or Firebolt and out thematic one such as Toll the Dead or Mind Sliver. If you take Magic Initiate at 1st level you can focus on Wizard's utility cantrips and pick up your damaging options from the feat. As Wizard, Stolas could know any number of spells through spell scrolls and the like. As always choices like Detect Magic, Identify, Magic Missile, Mirror Image, Mage Armor and Shield are just plain useful. For thematic options you want spooky and starry so things like Augury, Shadow Blade, Tasha's Mind Whip, Hold Person, etc. For things we've seen Stolas actually do, Tasha's Hideous Laughter, Misty Step, Disguise Self, Darkness and Cause Fear stand out me. 7. Feats (Optional) If your GM allows Feats at First Level, then you have some solid options here. For plain utility Tough and War Caster are solid options. If you went with Variant Tiefling for your lineage, Infernal Constitution is also great as it gives you a lot of resistances for a squishy wizard. For build/fun stuff, Magic Initiate (Wizard/Warlock) are a solid choice to get even more spell options. If you take Warlock in particular, grab Eldritch Blast as the best damage dealing cantrip in the game and one of the options I mentioned in the Spell section. For the 1st level spell, Hex, Hellish Rebuke, Cause Fear and Arms of Hadar stand out to me as good flavor or just useful. Finally, Telekinetic, Telepathic, Shadow Touched, Metamagic Adept and Eldritch Adept can also be fun choices to get more ways of manipulating your spells/options.
for Eldritch Adept in particular, Eldritch Mind, Devil's Sight and Armor of Shadows stand out as very solid options for Stolas. Eyes of the Rune Keeper is flavorful and on theme even if it is more situational.

10 Beautiful Vocabulary for the Navratri Celebration
Navratri Spirit: Honoring Goddess Durga
The vibrant spirit of India comes alive during Navratri, a nine-day festival that resonates with faith, festivity, and cultural grandeur. As the name suggests, "Nav" means nine and "Ratri" means nights. This festival is a joyous period steeped in beautiful traditions and customs. Let's delve into the dazzling world of Navratri with some exquisite vocabulary to enrich your understanding of this spectacular celebration.
1. Auspicious (au-spish-us)
Navratri is considered an extremely auspicious time. "Auspicious" signifies an occasion filled with good fortune and blessings. Devotees believe that prayers and observances undertaken during these nine nights hold special significance and bring prosperity.
2. Reverence (rev-er-ence)
The nine days of Navratri are dedicated to worshipping the nine divine forms of Goddess Durga. "Reverence" refers to the deep respect and devotion offered to the Goddess. Hindus across the world observe pujas (prayers) and rituals with utmost reverence, seeking the blessings of Durga for strength, wisdom, and protection.
3. Panoply (pan-o-ply)
Navratri is a visual feast for the senses. Homes and pandals (temporary shrines) are adorned with vibrant decorations, creating a dazzling "panoply" of colors and textures. Imagine intricate rangolis (floor art), strings of marigolds, and shimmering diyas (lamps) – a true spectacle of beauty.
4. Ethereal (ee-the-ri-al)
The atmosphere during Navratri is charged with a sense of otherworldly beauty. "Ethereal" describes something delicate and heavenly, and this perfectly captures the feeling one gets amidst the chants, devotional music, and the gentle flickering of diya flames.
5. Resplendent (ri-splen-dent)
Devotees dress up in their finest attire during Navratri. "Resplendent" signifies being magnificently beautiful and radiant. Imagine sarees in rich silks, adorned with intricate jewellery – a dazzling display of cultural resplendence.
6. Gastronomical (gas-tro-no-mi-cal)
Navratri is a time to indulge in delicious vegetarian fare. "Gastronomical" refers to the art of good eating, and Navratri offers a plethora of delectable dishes specially prepared for the occasion. Think of flavorful sweets like halwa and savoury dishes like sabudana khichdi – a true treat for the taste buds.
CREATE YOUR DREAM BOOK NOW
7. Jubilant (joo-bi-lant)
The spirit of Navratri is infectious. The air is filled with the sounds of laughter, music, and joyous celebrations. "Jubilant" describes a feeling of great happiness and triumph, perfectly capturing the mood of this vibrant festival.
8. Propitious (pro-pish-us)
The tenth day after Navratri, Dussehra, marks the victory of good over evil. "Propitious" signifies favorable or auspicious. Dussehra is seen as a day that ushers in good times and eliminates negativity.
9. Confluence (con-flu-ence)
Navratri transcends religious boundaries and brings people together. "Confluence" signifies a flowing together, and this beautifully captures the spirit of the festival. People from all walks of life come together to celebrate, share stories, and strengthen community bonds.
10. Euphoria (yoo-for-ee-ah)
Navratri leaves a lasting impression. "Euphoria" describes a feeling of intense happiness and excitement. The festival leaves devotees feeling uplifted, inspired, and carrying the positive energy forward throughout the year.
Beyond the Words: The Enchantment of Navratri
These words merely offer a glimpse into the magic of Navratri. The true essence of the festival lies in experiencing it firsthand. The aroma of incense filling the air, the rhythmic beats of the dhol (drum), the vibrant colours, and the feeling of community – all contribute to creating an unforgettable experience.
So, if you have the opportunity to witness Navratri, embrace it with open arms. Let yourself be enveloped by the joyous spirit, savour the delicious food, and appreciate the beauty of this time-honoured tradition. You might discover a new facet of Indian culture and return home with a heart brimming with "euphoria."

Introduction
Hi there! You can call me Bat. It/Its pronouns. My username is in Gaeilge (Irish) and means Fiery Trickster. (was previously under the UN Gaelcryp) TLDR; I am: 27, queer, nonbinary, autistic, adhd, disabled, and a spoonie. I am an Astrologer, based in Hellenistic Astrology. I do incorporate this into my practice. I am a cosmic folk hedge witch, with an emphasis on spirit work and am learning the folk traditions of the Appalachian, Irish, Scottish, and Swedish. I'm a Gaelpol, Lokean, and Animist. Actively learning decolonization, antifascism, abolitionism, anarchy and harm reduction. Covid Vigilant. Please only follow if you are over 18, minors don't follow. You are not in a safe space if you are a folkist or any other form of white supremacist, an informed appropriator(including Lilith devotees), racist, ableist, queerphobic, anti-Semitic, pro-Israel or a zionist, fatphobic, anti-masker (or just not masking bc u don't care anymore!), or harm apologist. Also note that I am Wicca Critical. ---------------------Long Version--------------------------
I have been a witch/magic practitioner for the past 6 or so years. I practice mainly folk magic as of recently, focusing my studies on Appalachian, Irish, Scottish, Welsh and occasionally Swedish traditions. I've been learning slowly about my ancestry and where my family comes from in order to both connect with my ancestors and venerate them, as well as learning about the places of my family's origin and their folk traditions. My family is heavily tied to the Appalachian regions, namely of North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Georgia. A great many of them seem to have emigrated from Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Another subset of ancestors seem to have emigrated from Sweden and Germany.
That said, I'm also trying to learn about the land I live on currently in the Pacific NW and figure out how to practice the traditions of my homelands while I reside here and incorporate the land respectfully. I have felt homesick for Ireland since I was about 7 years old, and I've wanted to be involved in anything Irish I could find. I feel that the land Herself is calling me back, to the place where my ancestors called home. I'm trying to learn the language and hope that one day I will be able to, at the very least, visit for a long while. I consider myself a hedge witch as well, not for the aspects of solitude but rather for the hedge-jumping/spirit-flight and focus on the Otherworld and spirit work. Connecting and communing with spirits has been a primary focus of my craft since the beginning. As far as my beliefs go. I have been particularly focused on Gaelpol/Irish & Scottish Polytheism the past 4 or so years. (and now learning about Welsh) I am a Flame Keeper for Brighid, tending Her flame for 24 hours every 20 days. She is the goddess and deity that I have worshipped the longest, and felt a strong connection to first. Of the Tuatha De Danann, I also hope to form relationships with Donn, Lugh, Manannán mac Lir, Áine, and Aengus Og. Within the past year I've also been connecting to Heathenry, through an unexpected connection to Loki. Though heathenry will not be a particular focus in my practice, I consider myself a Lokean and devotee of Loki and honor their family (partners and children) as well. I use he/they/she pronouns for Loki, personally. I am a strong Animist and have been, without the word, since I was very young. It is important to me to honor and get to know house spirits, land spirits, animal spirits, and plant spirts. I believe in fate and partial pre-determinism and that the planets give us signs through astrology. I believe electional astrology and astrologic magic are ways to work with the universe with some self-determinism. I believe in soul-transmigration and of course, the Otherworld. I believe in the soul having many parts - much like in Norse paganism.
As a disabled person, I am always on the hunt for things to make my practice more accessible. I also am hungry for community, as being inside all the time due to trying to stay safe from covid and just generally often being home-bound is so lonely. As an ever-growing and changing person, I allow myself to morph and grow as I learn and experience more. So this post will likely be updated over time.

1. Jacques Torres Chocolate
Location: Multiple locations across NYC
Dubbed "Mr. Chocolate," Jacques Torres has been a hot cocoa institution since opening his first shop in DUMBO. Their Wicked Hot Chocolate is a signature blend of real melted chocolate, milk, and a hint of spices like chili and cinnamon. The result? A velvety, slightly spicy experience that’s as bold as the city itself.
Why It Stands Out: Rich, thick, and unapologetically decadent. The subtle heat from the spices makes it unforgettable.
Pro Tip: Pair it with a chocolate chip cookie for double the indulgence.
2. Dominique Ansel Bakery
Location: SoHo, Flatiron
Known for inventing the cronut, Dominique Ansel doesn’t skimp on its hot chocolate game. The Blossoming Hot Chocolate is a spectacle in itself: a marshmallow flower blooms atop the steaming cocoa, turning every sip into a visual delight. Beyond the theatrics, the chocolate is smooth and creamy, striking a perfect balance between sweet and bitter.
Why It Stands Out: Instagram-worthy presentation and a silky, well-rounded flavor.
Pro Tip: Visit early—this bakery draws crowds, especially during the holiday season.
3. City Bakery (Honorable Mention)
Location: Closed in 2019 but still worth remembering
For decades, City Bakery’s legendary hot chocolate was a staple on every New Yorker’s winter bucket list. It was thick enough to eat with a spoon, topped with their signature homemade marshmallows. While the bakery is gone, its memory remains a benchmark for all NYC hot chocolates.
Why It Stood Out: It redefined what hot chocolate could be—practically dessert in a cup.
Legacy Tip: Recreate the experience at home with artisanal marshmallows and high-quality melted chocolate.
4. Daily Provisions
Location: Union Square, UWS, and Flatiron
Daily Provisions offers a no-frills hot chocolate that feels like a warm hug on a cold day. Made with a blend of Valrhona chocolate and steamed milk, it’s simple, classic, and hits all the right notes. The option to add a dollop of whipped cream makes it even cozier.
Why It Stands Out: Understated excellence—sometimes less is more.
Pro Tip: Pair it with their famous crullers for the ultimate comfort combo.
5. Levain Bakery
Location: Multiple locations
Famous for its gooey cookies, Levain Bakery also crafts a hot chocolate worth raving about. It’s smooth, chocolate-forward, and perfectly sweetened, made with the same dedication as their baked goods.
Why It Stands Out: No gimmicks, just pure, chocolatey perfection.
Pro Tip: Sip it alongside a warm, freshly baked chocolate chip walnut cookie.
6. L.A. Burdick Handmade Chocolates
Location: Flatiron
This Boston import has won the hearts of New Yorkers with its European-style drinking chocolate. Their hot chocolate is intensely rich and served in a petite cup—a nod to its potency. Choose from dark, milk, or white chocolate variations, each crafted from ethically sourced cocoa.
Why It Stands Out: It’s more of an experience than a drink—thick, luxurious, and unapologetically indulgent.
Pro Tip: Order the dark chocolate if you love bold flavors, or mix it up with their white chocolate for a creamy twist.
7. Blue Stripes Cacao Shop
Location: Union Square
Blue Stripes takes hot chocolate to the next level with their Cacao Cloud Hot Chocolate, a light, frothy drink made from whole cacao fruit. Unlike the overly sweet hot chocolates you might find elsewhere, this one is natural, earthy, and just the right amount of sweet.
Why It Stands Out: A healthier, cacao-forward alternative for purists.
Pro Tip: Try their cacao smoothies for a refreshing take on chocolate.
The Verdict
Each café offers a unique spin on the classic winter treat, making it impossible to crown a singular winner. However, here’s how they stack up depending on what you’re craving:
For the Richest Experience: Jacques Torres
For Presentation & Fun: Dominique Ansel
For Simple Comfort: Daily Provisions
For Serious Chocolate Lovers: L.A. Burdick
For a Twist on Tradition: Blue Stripes
A Toast to NYC’s Hot Chocolate Scene
In a city as diverse as New York, it’s no surprise that hot chocolate takes on many forms. Whether you’re savoring it thick and spicy, frothy and light, or with a blooming marshmallow on top, one thing is certain: NYC knows how to warm your winter days, one cup at a time.
So bundle up, grab your mittens, and start sipping your way through the city. After all, the best hot chocolate is the one that makes you smile with every sip. ☕🍫
