Happy 15th Anniversary Magi~ Magi Appreciation 2/9 (?)
Next one is for Arba because again starting alphabetically hers was one of the first I finished. I don't know if I wanted to get hers all done at once because I wanted to have another set done quickly, wanted a villain set, or didn't want to have too much villainy dragging down all the future ones LMAO.
I will go off on another time about it, but her fights hit so hard. Please let women beat the shit out of others (including guys) and have the shit beat out of them. Equal opportunity beat-ups (I'm serious).

Tales about the mother of chaos

Landa is the (second) Magi of the Kou Empire, brought from Reim many years ago when she was nothing more than an innocent and naive child to what would become Al Thamen. The woman served primarily as a priestess and even worked in one of the organization's temples located in Parthevia 10 years ago when Al Thamen established itself in the country. That is, until the temple was destroyed by Sinbad, leading her and the rest of the organization to return to Kou. There, she had to live once again with the First Magi.
Landa had seen him before these events, but she didn't actually try to engage in a dialogue with Judal. However, the Magi tried to push her to the limit or provoke her capabilities as the "second Magi" something that yielded no results. After some time, Judal simply accepted her and began to live with her naturally. Judal has a sense of exclusivity, so for much of his youth, he felt compelled towards a one-sided competitiveness, which left him frustrated.
they are like:

Landa didn't mind doing the most important or the largest number of tasks, but she felt virtuously arrogant when she had some greater merit, something that infuriated Judal. Occasionally, she would find him to have tea in some secluded corner of the palace, where Judal would mainly complain but eventually talk about things that amused him throughout the day, generally involving carnage and misfortune, or comment on a conversation he had with the newly titled king of Sindria, Sinbad. Landa visited Sinbad in the company of Judal a few times, attentively paying attention to the Djinn user.
Landa is tremendously arrogant and has a grandiose ego, akin to the weight of the heavens on a mortal's shoulders. However, she does not express this directly, mainly adopting a passive-aggressive approach. This is only when she feels frustrated or unjustly treated; in general, she is a composed woman. Her egocentric behavior is mainly due to the time she spent with Gyokuen in Kou (a not exactly pleasant time).
Landa and Judal have a dynamic inspired mainly by the Kindred (yes, those from League of Legends), but I also think of them as yin and yang (and not just because of the colors). I write them as "opposite sides of the same coin" or "good and evil," "black and white," or even Padmé and Anakin, considering the inspiration for the character. The metaphor behind them is the complementary relationship, as it is something symbolic and beautiful, regardless of the interpretation the audience may have.
But if they have a relationship, would was like a:

(no ironically)

[Magi reread] Night 76: Smile
It's been a while, lmao. I did some fandom jumping, was pretty busy, too, but this chapter was dragging behind me, like, come on, last chapter of the arc! Part of the reason I'm back here is bc I'm kinda getting to the part in this Final Arc rewrite where it'd be fucking nice to have some background info on a few characters. I mean, I know stuff in theory, but I also know myself enough to expect random changes during the actual writing process & it'd be a fucking pain if I wrote one version of events in flashbacks, and then went somewhere else in the actual prequel.
ANYWAY, chapter.
Bro, I love some of the final chapters of the arcs titles, especially Smile and Welcome Home (Magnostadt Arc), like, they just stayed in my brain. Why must you hurt me this way, Ohtaka.
I don't recall posting covers of chaptera too often, but this one is just so fucking sweet, man. And sad. It just... really does it for me, y'know? Smiling after everything that's just happened, but also it feels like a promise, especially after Cassim just fucking died like that (I will never recover) - now the three of them are a family. ;;
On a semi-related note, it's kind of what makes it difficult for me to ship any of them with each other. Even excluding Aladdin's age (not that Ohtaka has issues with such things, and boy will you hear it from me, but that's for later), I mentally familyzoned them. Interestingly, I'm more flexible with Cassim and Alibaba, though over time I also grew to prefer to view them as siblings. Like, I had a few CassAli AUs in the past, but I think I also wrote too much of Alibaba perceiving Cassim as his brother to come up with new ones. Now it'd just feel weird.
I'm still waiting for Silk for Steel update, tho.
Also, shoutout to me bc I thought: it's been a while, I'll check quick what I wrote about the previous chapter to kinda regain some context (yes, only now), and, yep, tears in my eyes. It happesn every time.
Ok, chapter.
I was going to ignore him, but, fine, you get a pic. He looks fucking exhausted. And no surprises here, tbh. He was using his magoi in battle and also got a little impaled, too.
Is he, really?
I'm still mad at Al-Thamen resolution or the lack of it. Like, bro, look at this pic, it's so messed up? What the hell? Right after Sinbad says that the fight isn't over, we get this, and, like, yeah, there's a shitton of these guys left here.
I miss Al-Thamen being threatening.
Is it the first time First-Class Singularity is used referring to Sinbad? I might be wrong, but if not first, then one of the first ones.
On a different note, I kinda chuckled, seeing that they refer to Alibaba as Aladdin's immature candidate to be the king, I mean, immature, and yet him and Aladdin managed to change the Flow. Imagine what they can do once they do mature? <3
Can I please get some details, Ohtaka? You mean similar situations as in Kings changing the Flow? What do you mean by that? But on the other hand, kinda makes me think about the Final Arc & the argument that everybody can see a little bit of destiny/change it. Heh.
Side-effect of taking a break from the manga reread is that I'm wondering if it's the first time we have that "Father" mentioned or not. Honest with ya, on my first read I definitely didn't pay attention to this, lmao.
Also, sick art.
Welcome back to my God I love Alibaba. I love kind characters. Of course he didn't want anybody to die, but something about the fact that he says "they surely still had many things they wanted to do", it's so... humanizing. Not of Alibaba (tho him, too), but of these people who died, who we know nothing about - they were just background characters, after all. But to Alibaba they were people who had their own lives and hopes and dreams. They had a meaning just because they existed.
It feels so... contrasting to Hakuryuu. He had no consideration for his own people, he just used them as means to an end, literally brainwashing them in an extremely painful ways that I very much did NOT forget, until they became nothing but puppets full of anger. Feels weirdly ironic, or maybe even metaphorical that he himself was a slave to his own anger, and so he turned those around him into his image. Ha.
Ugh, this smile is so sweet and gentle.
Anise! Wish we knew more of you : (
I'll save you the Rashid salt this time.
This entire page deserves to be there, imo. It's... beautiful.
"The flow never stops, it'll endlessly protect and be the ally of us, the living... that's why although a person's death is a tragic thing... It's no a farewell."
It... actually remind me a little about Avatar: the Last Airbender, specifically this quote "You have indeed felt a great loss, but love is a form of energy, and it swirls all around us. The Air Nomads' love for you has not left this world. It is still inside of your heart, and is reborn in the form of new love. Let the pain flow away."
I'm ignoring the other ones, I was always like, hah, seeing how Rashid is disappointed in them.
Tho still, shoutout to the guy who left his kids' in the care of his wife, and then was disappointed they didn't turn out how he wanted them to.
Bitch I'm sad
*squints* what is this expression
: ' )
Oh, hi, Morgiana.
As much as I complain about Magi's trio being actually a duo + Morgiana, I'll give a point here. It was pretty sweet that as the spirits were leaving, she run up to them.
Welp, that's the end of the chapter.
I checked the next chapter just in case, and, yeah. The anime has some stuff happen here, as in, Kou is close or something & there's some scene on the ship iirc, regarding leaving Balbadd... I complain about the anime a lot - and I will keep doing that - but I think it was a pretty good decision (idk about the execution, I don't remember). Jumping from Night 76 to Night 77 feels kinda weird. I legit had to take a second & check if I didn't miss some chapter.
Maybe Kou was mentioned sometime earlier & I just don't remember, but still. This really is the last pic of the chapter, and suddenly we're in Sindria.
Damn Ohtaka and her stupid timeskips.

first, the prince notices a pair of al-thamen men hurrying across the palace, looking panicked despite the lack of facial expression he can see. that hakuryuu shrugs off, only when he catches a glimpse of the black magi snickering where he sits dose the prince frown, knowing the man is up to something again. whatever it was, he wants nothing to do with it — still hakuryuu steps closer, speaking to judar for the first time probably this week. ❛❛ can’t you cause chaos away from my room ? ❜❜
"No", he replied with a sneer. Eyes lowering, purple eyelids frame the malicious expression, irises devoid of light.
"Unless you become one of my chosen, eh? C'mmon, Hakuryuu, you're behind your siblings." Judar spreads his arms, showing him an invisible crowd surrounding them.
"You know you want to, I'm your best choice." He smiles, that fake smile the prince probably despised. The veiled priests walk away, the fallen magi was playing his part, as he always did.
And only then Judar, takes a step closer, enough to whisper into his ear, shoulder against shoulder, Hakuryuu could feel the words roll down his lips. The eerily happy act is over, even his voice sounds different, darker, more adult.
"Power. You need it. Become my king vessel."

@heartsacrosstime asked: She had been flying in the air for what felt like forever, rushing towards the city of Balbadd as soon as she felt a disturbance in the Rukh. Luckily Drakon was more than capable of running things in her absence. However, her sudden departure without much explanation surely startled everyone back home. Brown hues widened as she finally saw the location in her sights. The entire place not only looked like a mess, but also she could see and sense Black Rukh manifesting towards the palace. She was about to head towards there when she saw a familiar face seemingly trying to help some innocent people from the chaos of the situation. "Ja'far!!!" Kagome calls down to him, landing right beside him. "What's going on here?! And where is Sinbad?! Don't tell me he's drunk at a time like this!"
It was just like Sinbad to get them involved in this mess. He'd run off toward the palace with the boy, Alibaba, while Ja'far was left to tend to the sleeping magi. And in the middle of it all, the conflict had finally come to a head, boiling over with a darkness in the air so strong even he can senses it. That familiar shadowed weight they'd been fighting to banish. And meanwhile, the people are in disarray, bandits and insurrectionists battling the city guard, innocents caught in the cross fire. Sinbad had left him only a few brief orders before taking off.
Protect the people. Avoid killing anyone that does not wear the crown of thorns. Keep this city safe.
Easier said that done when he doesn't even have access to his vessel. Still, he's doing his best to evacuate the residents closest to the storm brewing on the palace grounds, with Masrur at his side.
A familiar voice draws him out the mess, looking up to the sky, mouth slightly agape with the shock. If Sinbad's talent is for causing problems, Kagome's is for showing up in the middle of them.
"K-Kagome, what are you doing here?" they must be in trouble if she's come all this. How did she come all this way? When-- "Masrur, take the lead," Masrur, level headed as always, merely waves a hand at Kagome in greeting before going back to work.
Once she's landed, Ja'far grabs her hand and drags her to the side, off into an alley to avoid the stampede.
"You shouldn't be here, you're supposed to be in Sindria--" he sighs exasperatedly, knowing there's no sense in fighting it. He serves the Lord and Lady of bull headedness. "Look, this place is dangerous right now. I'm not sure what's happening but there's an uprising, it's complicated. The important details are this; Al Thamen is in Balbadd, they're operating out of the Kou Empire now. And-- Judar is with them. Sinbad's gone to the palace to try and resolve the situation but he doesn't have his vessels-- don't ask, he's an idiot and I'm going to kill him later. Masrur and I are trying to get the people out. I don't know what's coming, but it's dangerous. You won't be safe here and I can't use my vessel to protect you."

Magi: The Kingdom of Magic

Al-Thamen was defeated by Aladdin and his comrades, and they said their goodbyes to Sindria, starting their individual journeys. Hakuryuu and Kougyoku followed orders and left for the Kou Empire. Meanwhile, Aladdin shared his plans to explore Magnostadt, a country shrouded in mystery and governed solely by sorcerers. He aimed to investigate unusual events and strengthen his magical abilities. Alibaba and Morgiana were inspired by Aladdin's determination and set out on their individual quests to refine their skills and revisit Morgiana's homeland. The diverse journeys of the companions were chronicled in Magi: The Kingdom of Magic, in which they faced different challenges. While they traveled apart from each other, a new threat emerged, foreshadowing an imminent war.

Way back thinking about doing element based photosets, the easiest way would be color coded, yeah? There's just one problem with that.
Lightning magic has at least three distinct colors, and I have been bouncing around why on earth that will be for years. It ruined my plans for nice and neat color-coordination and I'm pissed /lighthearted. So, I'm going to dump my thoughts on it into a post and be rid of it. (I may eventually go back to my color coordination and edit ideas but that is not this post. This post is my built up brainrot and semi-vent post, lmao)
After best considering the way to categorize them, my conclusion is simple.
Blue lightning comes from those whose magic magic base came from Alma Tran.

Yellow comes from the magicians born in the reborn world and seems to be the standard for all of them. (I know it looks a little green but that's my color correction being a little funky).

Then there is Judar who has to be extra as fuck.

One exception that I think supports this idea is Yunan. While magi are more directly connected to Alma Tran, I think ultimately that is not where their magic and connection lies. (Yes, I will say the same about Aladdin).

Yunan uses blue, specifically against his fight with Arba and Al Thamen. She points out how it is odd it is. Yunan agrees and cites the reason he is using it is to mimic Sinbad.
It would be nice to have the Alma Tran arc animated, as the manga is in black and white and all I can do is guess. Different worlds is the only common factor I could come up with, outside of strength or purity of the magic, which leads me back to why that would be the case in the first place and I'm back where I started.
As mentioned, Judar is extra about it. One thought is since he is Fallen, though that wouldn't explain why Isnan's and presumably the rest of Al Thamen's magicians don't have theirs changed black/purple too instead of blue. My honest hunch is that because Judar named it black lightning makes it a style choice he did of his own volition. Yunan makes a choice with his. No reason Judar can't be the same.
Uh, yeah. Incomplete data. That is what I came up with though.
Yes, I know this is basically the reason given to Electro's lightning to change to yellow in No Way Home. I've been stuck on this idea for far longer than that movie coming out. Shows how long it's been lol.

"Your kingdom is weird", was his 'intelligent' and single conclusion. For a magi, his imagination wasn't exactly creative, as if it had been another of the limits of his magical instructions. Always reduced to controllable extents so he wouldn't use his power for anything Al-Thamen couldn't oppose.
He stares at the strange parade passing by, the exuberant woman, the weird steed, the warrior, and then a peasant. Yeah.
But then he noticed the grim shape of the carriage, his nose wrinkled in disgust. Fortunately, it was gone as quickly as it had passed.
"You'd say they had something to do?", he grinned at Hikaru. "Let's kill them and find out." Someone else would have opted for the other way around, but Judar was Judar.
Until he got bored of the idea of killing what seemed like small fries.
"Better find who destroyed the castle, eh? Can you sense the trail of magic?" He looked up, focusing. His eyes almost glowing as he searched for the trail. It used to work with metal vessels and the powerful djinn within. Couldn't be that different, right?...
Following Judar around, perhaps he could be her guide to this place and see what danger lies ahead. “Think of it as a box with moving pictures.” A simple explanatory of a television means.
While walking towards somewhere, they saw a used carriage but was ignored by an armored succubus operating it with a wicked-looking horse, a sword-wielding servant and a local survivor. They must be heading to a village where she met Judar and fought a dragon.
“Whatever inside that carriage they’re using, i wonder what would they do with it. From the looks of it, it looked like covered corpses but not sure.” Hikaru didn’t see the full thing because it was too fast. “It’s best if we should ignore it and focus on where we heading.” The plains were quite a good route despite how random it was.
There she saw a crater where it was used to be an elven fortress but now turned into nothing. Someone might have destroyed it with one strong magic.
And they kept going.

The fight seems to drain from his eyes, the exhaustion casting a shadow across his features. He hasn't slept in two days, spending his nights keeping watch over Kagome so that the others might rest. It had taken everything just to usher Sinbad out of the room. And he had finally convinced Yamuraiha to take a rest, her constant magic work draining her energy faster than the rest. You're of no use to anyone if you're too tired to work, he had told them while feigning his own condition. Sure, he was tired too, but he was better suited for long nights, conditioned from birth to push his body far beyond it's usual limits. Those habits hadn't been lost to time, even if it wasn't as necessary now.
Or it shouldn't be necessary. They should be safe now. All the work put into building their new home, a safe haven for all those left abandoned by the world and yet they were still vulnerable. He wasn't so naive to think they would ever be completely safe, the world was too filled with darkness. They had amassed as many enemies as they had allies and if they wanted to truly change the course of the world, they might continue to make more. There would always be danger. But knowing that didn't make this any easier.
Ja'far took a seat at the vanity, sweeping his keffiyeh from his head. He combed his fingers through his hair, steadying his breath.
"Judar was here, with Al Thamen's agents. We have protocols in place for an outside attack but it hardly made a difference against a magi. He-- he cast some kind of spell, we have our best magicians looking into it but so far none of them have been able to find any answers. And Kagome... she hasn't woken up. Yamuraiha has likened it to her consciousness being sealed away. Nothing has worked to wake her," there's an edge to the voice, not steeled as usual, but something panicked and hesitant. He's covering it as best he could, so as not to appear weak in front of Serendine. But perhaps Serendine's contempt for him means he can afford to drop his mask. After all, he doesn't care much for her keeping some high opinion of him. "Al Thamen disappeared immediately after, I managed to track a few of their agents down and dispose of them. But Judar has run back to wherever he's hiding, like a rat," he spits the name, lips curled in a snarl.
There's the snake, the person she knew Ja'far to be on the inside. It was rather ironic he liked to call her such a terrible person when at least she is upfront about her true nature, unlike himself. That fake smile he puts on, the nice diplomatic tone of his voice...All of it was fake, a manipulation tactic to get others to trust him. At least...it was to most people.
Serendine knows how much Kagome cares about Ja'far, sees him as a brother, even. As much as she personally doesn't like him or Kagome's choice in a husband, she can at least tell they are being genuine with her, just as Serendine is. They all had that much in common along with caring for that pure-hearted woman who none of them deserved to have in their lives.
All three of them had blood on their hands. All three of them had done terrible things, and yet...that magi sees the good in them, cares about them, and wants to help and protect them. You would think this commonality between them all would make them be able to get along, but perhaps that very reason is why that just can't be.
"And I think her trust in you and the idiot king was too easily won and undeserved. So, the feeling is mutual." Her own words are laced with poison, looking at him with the same intensity from behind the mirror's glass. "But...your terms are...reasonable for once, Snake. I see no reason to share such information with anyone else."
A hand is placed over hear heard then, a display that meant what she was about to say was the ruth and only the truth. "I swear on the trust of my dear friend that nothing you say regarding her condition or what transpired will leave my mouth. You have my word as the Queen of Parthevia."

his body ached, but now wasn’t the time to give in to rest. they were so close; gyokuen and the rest of the empire were finally within reach. he and judar would kill the witch, take back his country and then destroy anything else — anyone else — who dared to get in their way. so rest was out of the question, at least for hakuryuu, but for his lazy magi, that was another story. ❛❛ quit that, judar; you’re supposed to be working on your teleportation magic. ❜❜
"Hmph," he replied with a confident scoff, hands stretched before him, fingers spread as the flow of magoi shaped a small oval, a liquid mirror reflecting a random landscape, the image seemed to breath in and out, a small portal.
"I'm the best at what I do," he glanced over his shoulder, eyes narrowing with a sneer.
"Behold, my liege" There was a lingering hint in his words, not mockery, but a twisted form of pride, perhaps one fed by Al Thamen. As much as Judar hated to admit it, they had taught him what he knew, and he had exceeded all expectations, as the strongest of the magi.
However, the sleepless hours of study, practice, and effort were a secret jealously kept.

Why wasn't Judar the one to read Emperor Koutoku's will? Some random Al-thamen priest dude, who's weird face-curtain thingy was covering his eyes, did it instead. Isn't Judar the high priest? Unless I'm wrong about something, it makes a bit more sense for the high priest to do it instead of a rando. Maybe they just couldn't convince Judar to do it, idk.
I think he just didn't want to lmao
That or they asked him to and he didn't show up so they had to improvise.
You're right it would make more sense for him to read it if Judar was more responsible
But he's not :p
#al thamen: asking judar to read the late emperor's will#judar: hahaha no <3#he probably would've botched it anyways mans can not take anything seriously#magi
