no i swear she does! this is very much my hc as well, and some mutuals will know what i’m talking about because i’ve had similar rants in messages multiple times before lol.

sophie’s an actress (a bad one, but shh), her life is a play, and she seems to think that she’s playing the femme fatale to nate’s hardboiled detective in a film noir. and to be fair, she’s kinda right! leverage isn’t a film noir, but it borrows a lot of tropes from & makes many references to that genre. the game of cat-and-mouse that her & nate were playing pre-leverage is extremely reminiscent of crime noir, particularly the pilot flashback because it’s literally in black-and-white film like those ‘40s classics. when we meet her in the pilot, she’s dressed in a dark coat and walking out of a smoky alley at night… again, so very spy thriller, crime noir, etc. she gets particularly upset in the first david job when nate’s old boss mentions that nate & maggie were like nick & nora, because she’s jealous that they actually had the story that she desperately wants with him. in the frame-up job she even explicitly references it - she mentions a film noir festival and then tells nate to "sit back and relax and watch alcoholic, repressed insurance cops harassing tragically misunderstood femme fatales".

side note: to create her aliases, sophie uses a lot of character archetypes and genre allusions. we even see her do this for other characters, since she tends to pick out parker’s con roles. she flatters the mark’s egos by recognising & playing into their narratives of their lives. eg, parker’s costuming in the three days of the hunter job - her junior reporter outfit is basically a shout-out to corky sherwood from murphy brown. of course, irl, that’s the show alluding to another show. but the in-universe explanation seems to be just… sophie’s grift plans use a lot of fiction tropes. sophie's grifts are narratives that she's bringing the mark into, she assesses what role they play - or believe they play - in their world, and she crafts a character role for herself to fit them perfectly.

as for her perception of the team members, one funny example we get is when she forces them all to dress up in the costumes she picks for a costume party (the 10 lil grifters job). parker is nancy drew and i think it’s notable that sophie chose that quite innocent, nostalgic, sweet character for parker, because while we know parker is lovely, MOST people see parker as quite terrifying in the leverageverse. but sophie sees her more as an accidentally acquired daughter lol. i feel like s1 sophie might’ve more thought that parker was NOT living up to the costume standards for the crime noir genre they're apparently in. she’s like "why are you in a t-shirt & leggings we are supposed to be doing a dramatic strut out of a shadowy smoke-filled alley rn smhhh".

no idea how this rant got so very long and off track, but my point is that yes, i think sophie’s perception of the world and her friends seems to be coloured by her love of narratives and the tropes they employ.

Saw a post about how Nate embodies Sophie’s noir romantic fantasies and I remember how Sophie always has a comment after the more serious romantic entanglement Eliot episodes (“The Two-Horse Job” and “The Studio Job” (she asks Eliot and his “no notes” line)) and I’m wondering if to her Eliot embodies the cowboy drifter romance stories. And now I’m wondering if that’s how she puts everyone into categories. Just whatever dramatic literary tropes they fill.
