Follow up to the post about “banned” books:
For all my book banning needs my first stop is the American Library Association (ALA) website. To my mind they are at the forefront of protecting the First Amendment rights of Americans by defending writers and publishers from having their books removed from circulation.
Furthermore librarians are veddy good at keeping records and churning out statistics.
Every year the ALA publishes a list of the books that have had their appropriateness publicly questioned. Here is the most recent list currently available.
Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2021
The ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 729 challenges to library, school, and university materials and services in 2021. Of the 1597 books that were targeted, here are the most challenged, along with the reasons cited for censoring the books:
Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe
Reasons: Banned, challenged, and restricted for LGBTQIA+ content, and because it was considered to have sexually explicit images
Lawn Boy by Jonathan Evison
Reasons: Banned and challenged for LGBTQIA+ content and because it was considered to be sexually explicit
All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson
Reasons: Banned and challenged for LGBTQIA+ content, profanity, and because it was considered to be sexually explicit
Out of Darkness by Ashley Hope Perez
Reasons: Banned, challenged, and restricted for depictions of abuse and because it was considered to be sexually explicit
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
Reasons: Banned and challenged for profanity, violence, and because it was thought to promote an anti-police message and indoctrination of a social agenda
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
Reasons: Banned and challenged for profanity, sexual references and use of a derogatory term
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews
Reasons: Banned and challenged because it was considered sexually explicit and degrading to women
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
Reasons: Banned and challenged because it depicts child sexual abuse and was considered sexually explicit
This Book is Gay by Juno Dawson
Reasons: Banned, challenged, relocated, and restricted for providing sexual education and LGBTQIA+ content.
Beyond Magenta by Susan Kuklin
Reasons: Banned and challenged for LGBTQIA+ content and because it was considered to be sexually explicit.
Fortunately for us, the ALA is unparalleled in record-keeping book challeges. Unfortunately, perhaps one day perhaps their excellence will one day extend to their accessibility. There’s a wealth of great info on their site about book banning attempts, proposed legislation, Banned Books Week, and other goodies. Good luck finding it!😅

While I’ve been home for a bit, I wanted to share these photos from a visit to the Oaxacan weaving workshop of Nelson Pèrez. The use of a wide range of natural dyes is beautiful, including cochineal. These are the white fluffy bugs on the cactus, and adding limestone moves their color from magenta to purple. I thought this might be of interest to folks, especially intrepid natural dyers @jenngraves, @bowerbox @currentlocationpress @velmabolyard @maydaypresssalishsea (at Taller Nelson Perez Meneses) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClxVZdhrm4X/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Light That Failed

TALES OF THE TEEN TITANS #49 DECEMBER 1984 BY MARV WOLFMAN, GEORGE PEREZ, CARMINE INFANTINO, MIKE DECARLO AND ADRIENNE ROY
SYNOPSIS (FROM DC DATABASE)
The Teen Titans and their friends and Terry Long's family prepare for Terry and Donna's wedding ceremony the following day. In Central City, Wally West and Frances Kane witness a bank robbery staged by Dr. Light. Although use of his super-speed now causes him extreme pain and he suspects that his powers may be killing him, Wally insists on going into action, albeit invisibly, to stop the super-villain. When Wally is injured, Frances uses her magnetic powers to defeat Light, and the police arrest him. Humiliated at being beaten by a foe he never even saw, Dr. Light swears to give up his criminal career.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wally and Frances then rendezvous with the Flash, who confirms the diagnosis that the effects of the accident that created Kid Flash on Wally's changing adolescent body chemistry are responsible for his seemingly fatal illness, for which there is no known cure. Despite his despair, Wally phones to confirm his attendance at Donna's wedding.

REVIEW
The original idea was to depower Wally or take him off the board, as he was too powerful for Titans’ stories. The whole thing about he dying, however, makes me feel like Wally was supposed to die.
I say this because Wolfman was pitching the idea of a new Flash after Crisis that wasn’t tied to Barry Allen at all (so they already knew Barry was dying). Wally’s issues will be resolved, but even after that, it will take him years to be faster than his mentor.
But that uphill fight may have made the character more relate-able. So it may have worked for the best in the long run.
Doctor Light promises to retire after this issue, he does not. And in fact, he plays his role in the Crisis. So, the only thing that really matters in this story is what we find out about Wally.
Bringing Infantino for this part of the issue is also weird. He was the Flash artist at the time, but he likes drawing people more than cities and detailed structures (except for those panels above).
I give this issue a score of 8

It’s Banned Books Week!
In 2021, 729 book challenges were reported to the American Library Association, naming 1597 individual books. That’s a huge spike up from 2019′s 377 challenges. Nearly double in two years.
This continues a worrying upward trend in book challenges in recent years, and many of these titles have actually been removed from library or classroom collections in parts of the US. It feels like every day I’m hearing news of a new challenge or removal somewhere, or an attempt to codify those removals into law. Libraries who stand their ground by refusing to remove materials have seen their funding slashed, librarians and teachers have lost their jobs and been harassed, even threatened.
But it’s not just libraries. Proponents of book banning are even trying to make it illegal to publish or sell books they don’t agree with.
So now, more than ever, its important to stand against these attempts at censorship. Keep aware of goings on in your area. Speak at city council meetings, run for your local school or library board, donate to your local public library, write to your local representative. Or see what else the ALA recommends to get involved.
Anyway, here are the Top 10 Challenged Books of 2021:
Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe
Lawn Boy by Jonathan Evison
All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson
Out of Darkness by Ashley Hope Perez
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
This Book is Gay by Juno Dawson
Beyond Magenta by Susan Kuklin

After another year of censorship running rampant through the country, here’s the most challenged books of 2021
The American Library Association has released their Most Challenge Books of 2021 list, after a brutal year where book challenges and censorship are more prevalent than ever. The list is, once again, not surprising.
The complete list:
1. Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe 2. Lawn Boy by Jonathan Evison 3. All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson 4. Out of Darkness by Ashley Hope Perez 5. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas 6. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie 7. Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl  by Jesse Andrews 8. The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison 9. This Book is Gay by Juno Dawson 10. Beyond Magenta by Susan Kuklin
As opposed to last year, we’ve moved away from the anti-racist lit (although Hate U Give and Bluest Eye have moved up a few spots), and now LGBT lit and any book with sexuality” has a target on its back. We’re living in a dark time, guys, and just reading these books isn’t enough. Media consumption is not activism. Fighting this level of censorship is going to take more than just awareness and platitudes. It’ll take action.
Keep informed, keep vigilant, and fight when you can. There’s a way out of this, we just have to fight back.

Fanart seems to depict Wanda always dressing in exclusively red and black getups, but in the older canon comics, whether it’s the 60s or 90s, she’s got a much more diverse palette, one that’s very bright and warm. She doesn’t just wear red, but yellow, orange, pink, magenta, and bright purple. And I like that for my Wanda.  As for what her clothing is, even though my Wanda is 60s-based I draw mostly from the late 90s when she was being drawn by George Perez, such as THIS and THIS, which some touches from other decades, like how she liked furry accents for fancy occasions in the 60s, like a FUR STOLE she wore to the theatres in one issue or this fur trimmed COAT, and these CLOTH HEADBANDS that she wore in the 70s. Overall she likes a bright warm palette, glamor and femininity with a romantic bent, gold jewelry, and a lot of neat textures, embroideries, trims, and flowing fabrics, without crossing into stereotype territory.    Images are from THIS EXCELLENT WANDA FASHION POST on this EXCELLENT WANDA FANBLOG.

The Possessing of Francis Kane!
Tumblr media
NEW TEEN TITANS #17 MARCH 1982 BY MARV WOLFMAN, GEORGE PEREZ, ROMEO TANGHAL AND ADRIENNE ROY
SYNOPSIS (FROM DC FANDOM)
After an automobile accident that killed her father and brother but which she survived, Frances Kane, a long-time friend of Wally (Kid Flash) West, seemingly becomes a focus of destructive supernatural energies, and her mother becomes involved in witchcraft and seances.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wally brings Raven to investigate, and eventually the entire Titans team becomes embroiled in the affair. Despite their efforts, the energies emanating from the girl almost destroy Titans' Tower and New York. Cyborg deduces that the energies are magnetic, not magical, in nature, and uses a S.T.A.R.-created anti-magnetic device to cure Frances.

Unknown to the Titans, Francis's "possession" is actually caused by Green Lantern's enemy, Dr. Polaris, in an attempt to free himself from an extra-dimensional exile.

REVIEW
Every titan has their moment in the sun in this comic, and it is Wally’s turn. It’s an odd story for Kid Flash, but it is a very good story. This is the first appearance of Francis (Frances?) Kane (Magenta).
The team is so well balanced that you cannot figure out who is more important to the story. Cyborg is who actually saves the day, but it took Raven’s empathy, Kid Flash’s speed, Robin’s intelligence, Donna’s strength and Gar’s resilience to help Francis.
Knowing what will happen to the character, it was pretty obvious to me that this wasn’t a possession... little I knew that there was an actual possession in place, it just wasn’t from hell.
I give the issue a score of 10
