‘He’s under attack’: pro-Trump rallies battle chill and opposing protesters

New York protest, one of many planned around the US by Tea Party group and Gays for Trump, sees around 100 supporters face a smaller band of opponents

Around 100 Donald Trump supporters gathered outside Trump Tower on Saturday afternoon, as part of a nationwide effort to show appreciation for the embattled president.

In something of a blow for the expression of support, the pro-Trump rally was hampered by a dwindling turnout and a counter-protest.

I thought thered be a little bit more people, said Lance Lovejoy, from Maspeth in Queens. But its a little bit cold out. And it wasnt well put out either. I only found out about it yesterday.

Lovejoy, who voted for Trump, was wearing a rubber mask of the presidents face.

I bought it in Rubys costumes, he said through the masks small mouth-hole. A 48-year-old electrician, he said he had decided to wear the Trump mask because I wanted to show my love and support for him.

Pro-Trump rallies were set to take place in 60 cities over the weekend, organized by Main Street Patriots, a Tea Party group, and Gays for Trump, which formed during Trumps presidential campaign.

Debbie Dooley, from Main Street Patriots, said the groups Spirit of America rallies were likely to attract hundreds of people. She organized a pro-Trump rally in Atlanta on Saturday and hoped a few hundred people would attend.

We just want people to know President Trump has support, Dooley said. Hes under attack and when somebodys under attack its nice to know that people out there have their back.

Trump supporters began arriving at Trump Tower at around 11.30am. Some wore Make America Great Again hats, despite the scant protection the baseball caps offered from the 26F (-3C) temperature.

Others waved Trump flags and one man had a blue sign which said simply: Stop bashing Trump. A less succinct sign read: Yes! You are our president! Not 4. But 8 years! We are all behind you!

Michelle Mitchell, from Farmingville, Long Island, had used canvas to construct five letters spelling out Trump. Her friend Teresa Fisher was holding the T and R T for Teresa and Trump, she said while Mitchell, 49, had the U and M in her bag. Someone had walked off with the P.

I think a lot of people are afraid to come out, Mitchell said. Theyve seen people on the opposing side harass supporters.

Just after noon, a group of anti-Trump protesters arrived. The group of around 30 arranged themselves on the opposite side of the street. Their arrival prompted chants of USA! USA! Someone kept blowing on a trumpet.

The anti-Trump group began chanting T, R, U, M, P, are you fucking kidding me, before moving on to How much are they paying you? a reference to frequent claims by conservatives that liberal activists are being paid to protest.

Mari Gustafson, from Bay Ridge in Brooklyn, was wearing a large black pointy hat, in the fashion of a witch.

They say that theres a witch hunt out for them and I am the witch that is hunting them, she said, gesturing to the Trump supporters.

I would like to see America get its sense back again. Id like to see these people realize they were lied to. He doesnt care about the poor man. He only cares about his billionaire buddies.

In February, Trump suggested his supporters should hold a rally. It would be the biggest of them all! the president tweeted.

If anything, this weekends rallies seem to have galvanized the opposition. Anti-Trump protesters organized counter-protests across the country, gathering in Las Vegas, Lake Oswego in Oregon, Columbus in Ohio, Lansing in Michigan and elsewhere. In Nashville, Tennessee, two people were arrested during a rally at the state capitol.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions Recuses Himself From Trump Investigation

Attorney General Jeff Sessions held a press conference and recused himself from the investigation into whether or not Trump’s campaign had meetings with officials of the Russian government.

Following a media hit job on Sessions by the Washington Post over conversations that he had with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during his time in the Senate Armed Services Committee Sessions said he would recuse himself from any investigation now or in the future of the Trump campaign.

“I feel that I shouldn’t be involved with the investigation of a campaign I was involved in,” Sessions said.

“During the course of the last several weeks, I have met with the relevant senior career department officials to discuss whether I should recuse myself from any matters arising from the campaigns for President of the United States,” Sessions said in a statement, released during the news conference. “Having concluded those meetings today, I have decided to recuse myself from any existing or future investigations of any matters related in any way to the campaigns.”

There has been no evidence released so far that would suggest there were discussions only anonymous intelligence leaks to the Washington Post and New York Times without any substance of data to back up the claims.

During Sessions’ January 10th confirmation hearing, Sessions was asked if he had contact with any Russian officials during his time on the Trump campaign, he has continuously claimed that he did not.

“There was absolutely nothing misleading about his answer,” Sessions spokesperson Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement on Wednesday evening when the accusations came to light. “Last year, the senator had over 25 conversations with foreign ambassadors as a senior member of the Armed Services Committee, including the British, Korean, Japanese, Polish, Indian, Chinese, Canadian, Australian, German and Russian ambassadors. He was asked during the hearing about communications between Russia and the Trump campaign — not about meetings he took as a senator and a member of the Armed Services Committee.”

Apparently no one checks to make sure they were tagging to correct person on Twitter. An innocent Scottish man named Steve Bannon has been hit with numerous tweets that were meant for Donald Trump’s chief strategist and Breitbart News chairman. “Wrong Steve Bannon” has pretty much turned himself into a meme, and when you visit his Twitter and read his responses to people thinking he’s the Steve Bannon in the US, you can see he uses images that co-opt the classic “Keep Calm” poster. Scottish Steve Bannon isn’t the only person to receive angry tweets based off his name, at the end of the article someone named John Lewis who gets mistaken for the British retail store and civil rights activist.

2. Two More National Parks Appear to Defy Donald Trump on Twitter

Many government organizations like the National Parks, Nasa, the EPA, and even the POTUS staff have created alternative Twitter accounts after some were barred from social media and talking to the press. Although unconfirmed if these accounts are run by actual government employees, it’s definitely raised awareness for many of the different services the government provides and that many people support their attempts to defy heinous orders. Social media has provided an anonymous way for people to be government whistleblowers, or to be able to share facts in the case of the national parks twitters.

3. The internet isn't too happy about Ivanka Trump's fancy dress tweet

The same day Donald Trump banned immigration from 7 Muslim majority countries, his daughter Ivanka tweeted a photo of herself in a fancy gown. Social media users were outraged that she could post something so disconnected from the decisions her dad was making and while thousands were protesting at airports. People were responding by saying she was “tone deaf” and sent photos of muslim refugee children wrapped in silver blankets saying “who wore it better?” This shows that the new first family is very disconnected from the rest of the US.

4. Trumpism’s Twitter Wing Celebrates With a ‘DeploraBall’

A group called Maga3x held a party to celebrate Donald Trump’s inauguration after trolling social media with pro-Trump memes. In the newest this American Life Episode, an interviewer talks to one of the attendees who couldn’t seem to justify why she was saying nasty things (things along the lines of “kill yourself” and anti-semitic things). For a movement that lived online behind mostly anonymous names, it’s surprising that so many people met offline and let their names out there but that might mean that they were just trolls who didn’t take the election seriously.

5. Chinese send fake Trump tweets as jokes, New Year wishes

Creating fake tweets to match Donald Trumps style is all the rage in a country where Twitter is banned. “Despite tight government controls over online discourse, particularly surrounding sensitive domestic news, China’s 700 million internet users have a freewheeling web culture that churns out a running stream of commentary, memes and wisecracks about international news.” The article also says that many Chinese people seem to have a neutral view of Trump even though his comments over trade has raised concerns in Beijing. They just see him as a “show man.” Maybe they have seen a politician like this before.
