@a-mag-a-day most episodes I listened to while walking around the local park, so I don't remember each single ones circumstances. but this one i specifically remember going to the beach, thinking 'Oh, I'll listen to the early access ep on the way there! It's a short one 😊'. and then getting absolutely wrecked while having to wait 24 hours before i could react online
"Thank you for not hitting me this time," is still a gut punch. 'Slapping someone out of a stupor' is such a common trope, it kind of fades into the background of the story as just 'how to get Jon out of a statement.' But then Jon calls Martin out on it, and suddenly it's no longer that trope, it's just Martin having hit Jon three times, and it hurt, and he shouldn't have done it, no matter the reason

MAG173 - ########-13 │ Night Night
oooh, I love the concept
well, it's obviously awful, don't get me wrong
but to be fair, we tend to think of children as inherently good and pure
and as someone who was a victim of bullying K-12, I feel strangely validated by this?
children are egotistical by nature
and it's not that hard to twist that ego into something monstrous
like Martin, I too would've preferred to help them
but there's just no way to save everyone at this point

have this brief tangent about the dark i wrote at like. 3am because it's so underappreciated
i really don't consider the dark to be a fear of just. the dark, i see it as more of a fear of being unable to see if you're in danger or not - or a fear of your vision being obscured since most people rely on it so heavily. like that one saying goes, "you're not afraid of the dark, you're afraid of what's in the dark"
that is how the dark works, imo. less of a fear of just losing your vision for a little while but more of a fear of losing your vision meaning you can't see if you're in danger or not, not even being able to find a weapon if there is something with you because you can't see
i think mag173 - night night shows this best with how the children are all so afraid, knowing there's monsters out there but never being able to see them, meaning they can't even find out if its close to them or not
sorry if this is incomprehensible again i wrote it at 3am sdhsddsh

i literally just listened to mag160 and i had no spoilers about this big reveal and i think my life just shifted on its axis. i have no words
It's the eye-pocalypse (lol) right? They're still in the cabin tho right? God it's really been a while. I unfortunately knew about it before I listened to it but holy shit that was intense still O-O I'm at mag173 so you're probably going to pass me but I really loved the episodes in this season so far, like they're all putting sth on top of the horror that is there already (also jonmartin dynamic >>>) but I'm not going to spoil too much😌

Sometimes I forget how funny Martin is and then he says shit like “a strongly worded letter just doesn’t feel as forceful when it’s addressed to whichever dread power it may concern”

There's something absolutely hilarious about the concept of Maxwell Rayner, bodyhopping centuries old asshole who started a cult to take out the sun with a mini anti-sun..... being replaced by a 13 year old as the main dark avatar.
In the end, all avatars are just different levels of bullies.

Ah yes, the Dark that I've been dreading. That's a personal fear of mine. I was terrified of the dark as a child and I never quite outgrew that. So sure, put children in the domain you're walking through to make it all the more real for me.

references to other statements in “night night”
one of my favorite parts about this episode were all the callbacks to previous episodes where the event happened when the statement-giver was a child, so i wrote them out as a list here
the twisting shadow behind the swings: marcus mackenzie (146), who was tormented by the distortion beginning in childhood. his first encounter with it involved his favorite toy, his jumprope, which he specifically mentions bringing to school (presumably playing with it near the school’s playground)
the tree in the back garden that will “bite off [jack’s] hands to wear like apples”: hill top house. this is my favorite reference here because it brings together that mysterious tree, the rotting apples connected with the spider, and the whole weird thing with raymond’s hand being found around agnes’s waist when she commits suicide. my tinfoil hat brain is going nuts trying to figure out if this has/ties into any larger meaning or if it’s just a reference
the drum from the old drying machine with the big slimy worm underneath that will squeeze him til his eyes pop out: adrian weiss (84), whose landmarks when approaching old maggie’s house included a washing machine without a drum (interesting that it’s the missing drum in this episode) and who finds a mask of his friend gordon in the yard with worms crawling through the mouth
lives in the drain and pops up when you’re washing your hands and bites off your fingers one by one and can be stopped by flashlight: this one is a little less direct. i’m thinking it might be julia (in ep9), given the whole thing with the dark water flowing out of the taps in her house and the water’s connection to the Dark (ie light is its antithesis) but it also puts me in mind of lester chang from ep93, whose father-in-law had mold in his drain (though he wasn’t a kid so i don’t think this was the intended connection)
kaitlyn hiding in the wardrobe: benjamin hatendi (86), whose friend hid from the Dark monster in his wardrobe until he died there (technically benjamin wasn’t a kid for this but it was a childhood fear and the event was quintessential Dark so it still counts ok)
spiky fish with big eyes and pointy teeth in the picture book: this is also a bit more abstract, but it reminds me of little jonathan sims being marked by the Web after reading a picture book (81)
i think it’s also another really clever detail that the episodes on this list cover several different entities, underscoring the point about the fears wanting the children to mature so they can be truly frightened by other entities than the Dark

One thing I haven’t seen anyone comment on yet:  Callum just seemed to know roughly who Jon was, or at least that he caused the apocalypse... How? did he get a memo? did all fears tell their avatars, if they see a tired guy with too many eyes wandering around near london, say thanks? did annabelle call them all up to make sure jon&martin get a warm welcome??
also, note that jon is the eye guy. elias may have orchestrated the apocalypse, but from the looks of it, people only care about the eye guy who actually spoke the words

“Kaitlyn read a picture book once, full of horrible spiky fish with big eyes and crooked teeth.  She would see them every time she went to bed for weeks.
That was what the monsters looked like, she was sure of it.”
