"Speak no evil" - Mafia!Billy Russo x Reader
[TW: violence, mob/mafia themes]
Tumblr media
🫀REQUESTS ARE OPEN🫀
SUMMARY: When one of his men steps out of the line, Billy wastes no time putting him in his place. Remember for the future that when it comes to his wife, you should speak no evil.
WORDCOUNT: ~ 1.3k
Tumblr media
The fact that Billy made your house an open office for his business affairs made you occasionally not as furious. That day, however, it seemed as if every one of his underbosses and their closest subordinates came over. What was once your house suddenly became a get-together for criminals.
Billy knew that you disliked those events mainly because they were hardly interesting to you - it was, basically, very specific business talk weaved with cryptic slang that was only partially understandable to you. Because of that, you'd leave Billy and his men on the ground floor, doing their business, while you were sitting on the first floor, catching up with the responsibilities of owning a small business. You've lost count of how many times Billy offered to employ an assistant who would manage the coffee shop for you. As a prolific 'business owner' himself, your husband sure did miss the point of having something to do.
The only reason you were trespassing that invisible border between the ground floor and the first floor was that one file Billy seemed to misplace and asked you to retrieve from his actual office. It was supposed to be a short trip: get the documents, give them to Billy, exchange polite greetings and be on your merry way back upstairs. You had no interest in learning the intricate workings of the underworld, even if you were part of it, simply for your own peace of mind.
Walking through the door leading to the dining room, the Pentagon for New York's criminals for the day, you noticed a young guy, maybe in his twenties, smoking a cigarette by the garden screen door. The gap between the door and their frame was narrow enough that only his arm and the cigarette smoke could fit through. The first time Billy's subordinates came to your house, you made it very clear that you wanted no cigarettes indoors and, technically, that young guy by the garden door was abiding by the rule. Seeing the scar above his eyebrow, you thought you recognized him:
It was Jamie - someone whom you knew only from stories and passing glances during some big events. Anytime someone said something about him, it painted Jamie as a sheepish, maybe a little awkward guy, who didn't quite grasp social cues.
His eyes were focused on the floor as he smoked the cigarette and clearly thought hard about something. Among the dress shoes, your furry slippers looked at least amusing. They must have caught his attention as he tore his eyes away from the hardwood floor and looked up at you.
Jamie recognized you immediately, which was probably why he frantically threw away the half-smoked cigarette. He took a step towards you, effectively blocking your way.
"Sorry, sweetheart, no entry. This is now gentlemen's club, talkin' 'bout business n' stuff. Nothin' you should worry your pretty little head about."
Before you could answer him and remind him whose house he was in, somebody else interrupted the conversation:
"Something you want to share with everyone?"
The room fell silent. You turned to look at Billy, standing with his hands in his pockets. His eyes were slightly squinted and you could just tell he was irate.
"No, nothing, sir," Jamie frantically answered. He was quickly shaking his head.
"Weird, I thought I heard you being disrespectful to my wife."
The rest of the gathered men weren't willing to step in, they didn't even dare look anywhere else than each other or the floor. There really was no use in playing a hero - nothing good could come from it. Standing up to one's boss was always risky but it became downright moronic when the hierarchy in question was a gang. The other thing was that none of the other men thought Jamie was no longer salvageable: even among the demimonde, the wives were granted a certain amount of irrefutable respect regardless of what kind of men they were married to.
"No, I swear to God, boss, I didn't mean anything by what I said." It seemed ridiculously hard to believe that it was the same man that was gatekeeping your own dining room just minutes ago. "I was just being stupid, sir."
"You do seem really good at that," Billy answered with a mocking smile on his face. He appeared to be... enjoying that whole lark.
"I'm sorry, sir, I didn't mean to offend," Jamie reassured. His eyes wandered everywhere but Billy's face - he simply lacked the courage to look his boss in the eye.
"Don't apologize to me, you idiot," Billy spat out. If the dining table was any shorter, you were sure he would vault over it and strangle that man with bare hands. "Apologize to the lady you dared to talk shit to."
This wasn't the first time Billy got slightly overprotective. Although you did find his attitude tiring at times, you knew it came from a good place - he loved you a little too much to bear seeing you being pushed around. In his mind, you were nothing short of a queen and he was going to demand others treat you the same way.
Jamie turned back to you. His face was pale, his hands were shaking and tears began pooling in his eyes - if that man was anything, it was terrified. It was such a sudden change of demeanour you couldn't quite wrap your head around it.
"I'm sorry ma'am, it wasn't my intention to offend, I swear," he said rushing his words.
"Don't sweat it, Jamie," you reassured him while slightly shaking your head. Truth be told, he did anger you but it wasn't something worth escalating - judging by his sudden fear, he probably learned his lesson already. Although you were still talking to the blond man, your eyes wandered to meet Billy's. You wanted to make sure you got your point across. "We're all good."
Billy's eyes remained squinted as he continued to stare at Jamie with vivid contempt. He was unconsciously tapping his fingers against the surface of the table. You could tell that he wasn't over the situation just yet, despite your sincere assurance.
"Come on, Jamie." Billy gestured at the younger man to come closer. His voice was suddenly softer - something that made very little sense given the situation and his obvious anger. "Let me give you some advice."
Reluctantly, Jamie began walking towards Billy while all the other men took a step back to let him pass. Although their daily lives were filled with life-endangering situations, they withheld their breaths while Billy Russo was quite clearly upset with someone. Only once did you wonder what tactics got Billy's subordinates so docile towards him but you quickly realized that the truth could be, most probably, fairly horrifying or at least deeply unsettling, so you never paid it much thought anymore - for your own peace of mind.
When Jamie was within reach, Billy suddenly grabbed his jacket and forcefully pushed him against the wall. Not letting go of the poor man, he hit the wall with his head a few times before leaning in and whispering a promise he was surely going to keep:
"If you ever talk to her like that again, I will kill you."
Billy hit the man against the wall once more before letting go of his clothes. The man fell to his knees, his body swaying due to dizziness. He seemed to have a fair amount of trouble aiming his sleeve at his nose to wipe the blood that was running out of it. Billy sat back down at the top of the table and casually looked around at the silent, anxious men:
"So, where have we left off?"

This is werepanther Billy, deadass, cocky and confident and eager to tease his girlfriend.
Makes her sit in his lap and rubs herself on him, loves how needy she looks, coos when she asks to cum.
Slips a hand down to help her, watches her gush all over him, listens to her little sobs
God... Agony of Desire Billy. Takes good press photos to make sure everyone knows he's legit and makes you sit on his cock and look at them while he tells you all the wicked things he got away with while they were being taken.
Oof
Either way I want him to rearrange my insides you know?

Mise en Place - A "choose your own adventure" style fic - Part 1
Tumblr media
Fandom: Punisher AU Rating: Likely Explicit. Pairing: Billy Russo x OC Warnings: Dark!Fic, threats, murder, obsession, swearing, and likely more to be added... Summary: Nadine thought her biggest problem was helping to keep the restaurant she worked at afloat as the neighbourhood starts being bought out from under them. A chance meeting in an elevator with an old fling proves differently…
Notes: And so, we begin! Heed the warnings! This chapter is not rated explicit but others will be.
Tumblr media
If there was one word to describe herself lately, Nadine would say it’s exhausted.
Her day had been filled with deliveries that were improperly made, a sous chef quitting without notice, and at least one customer who wanted to argue with her over their order. Honestly, she just wants to go home, open a bottle of wine and then crawl into bed.
She presses the button to call the elevator, glancing at another sign informing the occupants that there will be another change made to the building. Since the ownership changeover, they’ve been making multiple improvements. Luckily none of it seemed to involve raising the rent. Yet.
The doors open and she slips in. There’s someone already there, coming up from the parking lot. Of course, it’s her luck that when she’s covered in grease, food splatters and sweat, rocking second day hair that she runs into him again.
Billy is standing there, in a well-pressed suit and smelling better than any man has a right to. It’s been enough of a day that she doesn’t even bother looking at him. They hooked up a few times, back when things weren’t so hectic. It was fantastic but both of them had their lives and she had no intention to tie herself down. Not when she’s trying to keep this restaurant alive when everything else around them keeps failing and being bought out.
He doesn’t greet her, too busy texting. It’s not a surprise. His work always had his attention first. It’s part of why they fit so well together. The button for their floor is already pressed so she leans against the wall and waits. Her eyes close and she tries to hold back a yawn. She can practically feel the comfort of her bed waiting for her. She just has to get to it.
She peeks out at the man in the elevator with her. It really was unfair that he looks as good as does. Him and his perfect suits, bright ties and… She pauses. Her eyes narrow as she realizes what she’s seeing. There is blood on his clothes. She glances up and sees more blood splattered against his hands. She looks at his face…and finds him staring back at her.

Everyone was waiting for her but she kept looking at herself in the mirror.
The wedding dress was beautiful, Pepper told her it was what Maria Stark –her mother- wore in her own wedding day and she loved it, the silk was too soft, hugging her curves with an ethereal touch and it had a subtle scent that she assumed belonged to the mother she couldn't remember.
Tony swore their mother loved her, their father too, the young bride couldn’t help but doubt it, they would not love her if they could see her now about to get married to a man who didn’t love her back, a man who humiliated her once for his pride, someone who probably only wanted what this arrangement could give him back.
How would she survive this marriage when it was impossible to leave the room and get to the Cathedral?
A knock in the door pulled her out of her mind, finding Natasha smiling at her in the reflection of the mirror.
“Are you ready, dear?” her friend knew the real answer but still gave her the chance to speak.
“I was about to go” she lied and the redhead gave her a knowing look “everyone it’s waiting, isn’t it?”
“You’re the bride, honey, they can wait” Natasha walked to her, looking like a goddess in her silver dress and put her arms around the bride’s body “you can say no, we can fight Russo’s father, hell, Billy would love having one more excuse to kill him.”
She was sure Billy would do it, not only for her but for his sister, for Madani and for himself but it wasn’t time yet, the alliances needed to be settled, Stark and Barnes had to fight alongside to kill Pierce and Carlo Russo. She made all that mess before getting her family back and nobody would take them from her, never again.
“It has to be done, Nat” she put the veil in her head and took the beautiful bouquet Becca left for her earlier “let’s go.”
Her friend must have seen something in her eyes that made her nod.
“Alright, Bells. Let’s do this” her nickname, the one Yelena gave her when they met years ago, made her smile, who could ever thought that knocking someone out with Christmas bells will change her life?
Natasha guided her trough the corridors to the waiting room where Tony was talking in a hushed tone with Pepper, her sister-in-law radiant with her baby bump, reminding her why this alliance needed to happen.
“I’d be waiting outside, dear” Nat kissed her cheek and went to take her place with the other bridesmaids.
Tony was staring at her, pale like a ghost, whispering his sister's name. It wasn’t the first time in the last months Bells was told how much alike she was with his mother, their mother but this time Tony didn’t say anything, just looked at her eyes to find determination that matched his concern.
“Everything it’s beautiful, Peps, thank you” the bride said and the ginger smiled with a hint of sadness barely visible.
“It’s the least I could do for you, topolina. You deserve beautiful things” she never had a mother, not that she could remember, but with Pepper there she could feel like she did.
Pepper gave her husband a gentle squeeze in the arm and went to join the rest of the guest.
“I have Frank ready to go, say the word and we leave” his first words almost made her chuckle, he spent the last fifteen days planning ways to get her out of this but Bells always refused, a small and stupid part of her happy because she would marry the man she loved.
“I want to do this, Tony, for all of us” that part it was true, this marriage was the only way she could protect him and Pepper and the baby, Billy and Dinah, Frank and Maria and the kids, the family she dreamed about since she was a kid and that she finally had. It also would save her from Carlo Russo’s greedy hands.
Bells knew one or two things about the mob, mostly from movies and for that she was sure the respect from his brother to her choices were more part of his good soul, she heard some stories from Maria that made her want to kill Carlo Russo even more.
True to the man she met not too long ago Tony didn’t fight her, instead he straightened his bow tie and extended an arm out for her to take it.
“Then allow me to walk you down the aisle, signorina, it will be my honour” the charm went back to his eyes and Bells could breathe, if she could count on them, she could do anything.
The music started playing when the wedding planner gave the signal and every one of her friends smiled at her or blew kisses at her before marching down the aisle. From where she was she could see Maria walk with confidence, not sparing a glance to her father who unfortunately was sited next to her brother Billy and Dinah.
Natasha was the last one, looking at her with reassurance one last time before following the others, then it was their turn.
“I love you, topolina”
“Love you too, Tony”
The crowd of guest was an unfocused picture, she only had eyes for the man waiting for her at the altar, wearing a black tux with a new haircut, his long chestnut locks were gone, sending a silly wave of sorrow through her veins.
She loved his hair, in an embarrassing impulse she remembered pulling his long hair to get him to kiss her again when-
Bells stopped herself.
It was dangerous to think about those times, they were gone the minute he saw her as one of his properties and decided to punish her for something she never did.
Bucky’s eyes never left her the whole way to him, drinking her like he was dying of thirst. Steve must have noticed too because he gave him a subtle bump to get him to blink and stop looking like he would commit sacrilege in the middle of the church.
The beautiful glass windows projected a million colors around her when Tony lifted the veil and with a barely visible hesitance put her hand in Bucky’s.
“I’m confident you will protect her with your life, Barnes” was all he said, dead serious when Bucky gave him a solemn nod and her brother kissed her forehead.
With her eyes watching her step, Bells avoided looking at him until it was impossible to keep going.
A soft smile, one she thought she lost forever, resurfaced when their eyes locked and the bride could read what he was thinking.
She was his, always was and always would be and he would never let her go.
I'd do bad things with you >>>
Tumblr media
Hiya! I'm super happy to post this story even if I don't know what I'm doing, to be honest I'm not fluent in italian, so here's the translation of the pet names I used:
-topolina: Little mouse.
-signorina: Miss.
If I made a mistake with that, feel free to correct me and tell me what you think! What do you think it will happen?
Love, Lily.

Love Language
pairing: frank castle x fem!reader x billy russo
word count: 1.7k
tags: domestic fluff, mafia!au, billy never betrayed frank, slight nsfw (it's just like 3 sentences), lowkey obsessive behaviour from Billy, established relationship, no dialogue, filthy rich people shenanigans, billy & Frank are like bodyguards to the reader, no use of y/n, use of 3rd person pov
warning: none
Summary: this is just how billy and Frank love differently, other than using their hands and lips on their favourite girl.
a/n: this also could be read as part of the 'La Reine de Londres' universe if you want.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frank and Billy are in love with one woman. That's no news. But what's interesting is their different love languages. Even though their hearts belong to each other and one woman, they express their love differently.
Billy is known for his love of luxury and quality. He's not afraid of enjoying and seeking out the best of the best, be it tea, a suit or a gun. Billy's approach to life is a bit hedonistic in a sense. He loves feeling good, loves making people feel good, be it by his hands or by dressing them in silk and gold.
He has always admired the lifestyle of rich and noble people since his rough childhood, how they held themselves and how they saw the world. It was how he came to meet their girl in the first place. He founded Anvil, a private military firm, to put his and Frank's skills to use, to feel like their time in the military didn't go all to waste. And also to build himself his own small empire, to feel in control of his life and do things how he wanted.
He overheard her talking to Wade in a bar, telling him about how she needed a trustworthy team of skilled people to guard her and her assets. Billy offered his service right then and there. That day, she not only took his business card but his attention for the next week.
Billy remembers going back home, telling Frank about the gig he got them, and he didn't leave out how pretty and hypnotizing the mob was. Frank laughed in his face, saying how Billy says that about any woman he sleeps with. But then Billy gave him a look, and Frank realized that his friend might be in a bit of trouble, and so was he.
Months went by, heated glances in the office and kisses at the back of limos became limbs in tangled sheets and remembering how Frank liked his coffee, how many moles Billy had on his skin and how she liked her eggs in the morning.
Then Billy started loving her differently, without his hands, lips or body. Don't get me wrong, he still enjoys touching her more than anything, he just started loving her in a different way. He started buying her things he thought she'd look pretty in and fit her personal style. If he saw a watch that would pair well with some of her other accessories, you better believe Billy would buy it and gift it to the mob with a kiss on the back of her hand, her neck and her lips.
Of course, Billy bought her flowers, pots of plants, and any plants he thought she didn't have and would love to look after. His gifts seemed normal and pretty common to receive from your lover at the beginning, but then his gifts became bigger, filling a hole in his soul and satisfying a hunger he always had.
He bought her a sports car, even though she already has multiple and barely drives them. But for Billy, she dressed in one of Billy’s favourite dresses on her, the white slip-on that stopped just below her ass and was backless, leaving her back, arms, neck and legs naked. She drove to the ridiculously expensive sports car to one of their favourite high-end restaurants and as soon as they arrived, she was dragged to the toilets and ended up with Billy between her legs with her back to the wall.
He even purchased her a house in the countryside next to a forest and farms. Billy just bought the house because it was old, owned by a Lord a hundred years ago and he couldn't take the image of his girl lounging around the house in silky robes while sunbathing like a cat for hours. It's not even a house, really, it's more of a small castle.
When they would be in the castle during weekends and holidays, Billy got his favourite woman sculpted by a group of young artists from the University nearby. You should have seen his face when he saw the leaflets in the local grocery store, looking for models so the students would get to practice with real-life subjects. He phoned the University that same day and got an appointment with the Fine Arts Professor the next day.
When he told her, she was surprised and told him how she didn't have all the time in the world to be standing there and getting sculpted, no matter how flattering it is to be considered beautiful enough to sculpt. Billy nearly got on his knees while explaining that they would work around her schedule and that it was a dream of his to get a statue sculpted of her, just like Greek deities.
And she accepted. At first, she had to accompany Billy to the University, to meet the teacher and some of the students, but also to see their work and projects. Billy was definitely impressed by the skills of the students and couldn't wait to have them sculpt his girl.
Billy offered their home to use as a studio to sculpt for a couple of days. The professor was hesitant until Billy told him where they lived and he immediately grinned with excitement, sharing that his students would love the change of scenery and feel as if they were actual sculptors being commissioned by a Lord to sculpt his Lady. Billy also shared his one and only condition, which was to keep any finished work of his girl. After all, it was simply for practice. The students accepted once they found out who and where they would work.
Then it was paintings.
When they met some of her clients, Steve and Bucky, a friendship quickly blossomed. Billy found himself really enjoying the presence of the two super soldiers, whenever they showed up at her office or when they were invited over for tea. Once when they were talking, Billy looked to the side and found Steve completely absorbed in a piece of paper. He had a pencil in hand, sketching away while everyone else was absorbed in the conversation.
Billy was curious and took a peek, and was surprised to find Steve sketching his girlfriend's profile as she went on about something that Billy had no ability to focus on because all he could see was the sketch and the sketch alone. After that, Billy made it his mission to ask Steve more about his art, which then transformed into an invitation to Steve's personal art studio where he showed the throuple his work.
Billy soon offered to commission Steve for a painting of his girl. He was willing to allow Steve months to paint and sketch, provide him with space in their home to paint and pay him beyond generously for his time and skills. Steve accepted immediately, he loved art, and he would love to paint the woman. She was absolutely beautiful and one of his muses after all.
Steve would end up sitting in the middle of their spacious living room in their château, surrounded by brushes and paint tubes, and a big canvas. While his subject was lounging on a sofa, her body half covered by thin white fabric, falling in her curves and dips and hugging her skin like the fabric was weaved for her skin and her skin only.
Billy would make tea, prepare snacks and sit down to admire his girl. He would talk during the process, ask her about her day and whatnot when Steve was not painting her face. Then he would feed her when she wanted a snack or a drink and was not allowed to move. And when they were done for the day, he would run her a bath, sit behind her and tell her about how much he loves her and how beautiful and perfect she is. Then when she was all dried up, he would rub lotion into her precious skin and massage her back and calves. As long as she's his, he's going to treat his so much better than anyone ever could, making goddesses in ancient myths jealous.
Frank on the other hand is a bit different. He’s the most himself when he gets to express his love through acts of service. Frank loves domestic life. There is something in the simplicity of it that makes him feel truly at ease and most comfortable.
Frank would rather do something by himself than hire someone to do it instead. He can cook, so he will cook for Billy and their girl. He can fix doors, creaky hinges, flickering light bulbs and practically anything. If something breaks in their home? Call Frank. He would be more than happy to fix it.
Frank once found his girl crouched on the floor, almost crying at a flower pot that fell and broke, and it wasn't just any flower pot, it was a gift from one of her friends. Frank looked at the mess of dirt and broken pieces and reassured her that he could fix it. It won't be as perfect as new, but he will save it as much as he can. And he did, and now it sits in their kitchen near the window and not a day goes by that Frank doesn't get all warm and fuzzy whenever he sees his girl smiling while watering the flowers in the pot.
If the clasp of his girl's watch broke? Frank would try to fix it by himself, and more often than not he succeeds. That man was so good with his hands, he could practically do anything. Not only can he wring out orgasm after orgasm from her with just his hands, but he can build her an indoor jacuzzi, refurbish their kitchen, build a shed from scratch and would damn well build a house if she asked him to.
He loves having projects to do. He needs to have something to fill his time outside of work. His girl was thinking about installing a new bookshelf in her office? Frank has already measured the space, found what type of wood his girl would like the most, how big or small she would want it and how long it'll take to build. He's truly a DIY man.
No matter how much Billy tells him to leave something alone because they can call someone to take care of it, Frank never listens. He will do it himself. This is his home, his family, and he will pour his blood, sweat and tears into building it.
He's a sentimental man after all, he wants to leave his mark on everything that surrounds him and the people he loves.

Ok, you piqued my curiosity. How did it all head south with her ending up as a captive Mrs. Russo?

gunpowder games ll 03.
Paring: Mafia!Billy Russo x reader.
Warnings: Dark Romance, Kidnapping, Violence, Drugs, Mentions of sex and sex related injuries, mentions of consensual non consensual situations? (please let me know if I forget something.)
A/N: I wrote this in 2017, bear with me lol.
* “It’s truly a shame you didn’t want to wear the red dress.”
You sigh in annoyance. Out of all the men in the office Frank had managed to bring Albert Cooper along to Brownsville.
Al was a brilliant man, and you were not sure why you weren’t attracted to him. He was your team’s tech guy, microphones, cameras, hacking, you name it. With a degree from Germany and a goofy sense of humor he was any woman’s dream.
You just didn’t mix work with pleasure.
Or that’s what you told him every time he asked you out, sliding his glasses up, putting his nervous hands through his hair. Adorable.
He had been best friends with Frank since long before you got to New York and everyone in the office knew he has pathetically in love with you.
You smile for yourself. You considered ‘Adorable Albert’ a friend, you cared for him and you trusted him even though he couldn’t shoot a gun. But you weren’t into him like that.
“The white one’s better.” Frank said matter of factly “It makes her look pure.”
“So other colors make me look like a hooker?”
“You know what I mean!”
“Can you two stop fighting like siblings and sort the plan out? We have four hours ‘till the party.”
You listened to Al’s voice behind you in the room, trying your best to keep focusing of your reflection in the mirror. You hated to admit, that white dress did make you look pure.
Brownsville, Texas is a small town next to the US border with Mexico. The organization had started investigating William Russo a few months before for gunfire smuggling and drug trafficking when he was still in Massachusetts.
An Italian descendent man with no family but a sister and multiple successful businesses around Boston wasn’t an unusual thing, it was the perfect cover up. Until his fortune started to grow, that was the red flag.
The operation started when you found out he had moved to Brownsville. To be closer to the border and smuggle by land instead of water you assumed.
William Russo sure was a businessman.
According to your southern sources, your target was anything but a humble man. Buying a large mansion in town and throwing parties every week, he was Brownsville’s own Gatsby.
You scoffed at the comparison.
Gatsby put on excessive displays of wealth and entertained strangers in hopes of being reunited with his lost love. Russo was just nouveau riche.
“It’s very simple, you’ll walk into the Russo mansion tonight as one of the many stupid naive girls in town who attend wanting to get closer to money and power, your only mission is to get noticed by him. See? Simple.”
You eyed Frank.
“Simple? You have a simple plan to get his attention?”
“Actually I do-“ Albert started.
“That doesn’t involve me getting naked in his pool.”
“Yeah, then no. But you’re the most beautiful woman I know, I’m sure you’ll figure something out!”
Albert’s statement felt a little patronizing, but you were too nervous to pick up on it.
“While you’re doing that, I’ll be infiltrated in staff, placing mics. Our main goal tonight is to find out why that psycho moved his whole gig to Brownsville.”
There was a knot in your stomach as you finished applying lip gloss and you looked around yourself.
You were in a small one bedroom apartment, the beige walls were depressing enough when you got there, but now, covered in files and pictures of the Russo siblings they were anxiety inducing and you felt like throwing up.
William Russo could never set foot in that apartment.
The organization had rented the entire complex and planted neighbors that could corroborate your stories. If everything went according to plan, they were supposed to keep Russo out of your home.
You were protected, as Frank promised. So why did you feel so nauseous?
*
Loud music and the sound of clinking glasses greeted you first. As you walked through the place avoiding people dressed to the nines and engulfed into the excess, it was difficult to blend in.
You looked down at your dress, rubbing your sweaty palms over white cotton and your shoulders bare let the breeze give you goosebumps, you rolled your eyes. You were gonna kill Frank.
Because, wasn’t this supposed to be a daytime event?
‘Focus, you have to find him.’
Your best friend’s voice in you head, echoing at all times. This was ridiculous, you weren’t even supposed to be here alone, specially not dressed like a bimbo.
You were sure you had combed the enormous property at least twice and there still wasn’t sign of your target, and now as the night passed, the party was turning into a bunch of people who just didn’t know when to quit.
You heard a command on your ear, the male voice that was physically a block away but followed you everywhere though a wire.
‘Frank’s at the back door of the party to get you, it’s okay if you didn’t find Russo, we’ll try again tomorrow.’
You make an annoyed face. You didn’t want to try tomorrow. This party was the perfect setting for the operation, and you weren’t about to let it go.
Suddenly you feel a man’s gaze on you, hungry like the wolf, and you smile shyly at him, still in character. He is pretty attractive, tall and blonde, and he looks at you almost without blinking, blue yes burning into you, until he doesn’t anymore.
You try to ignore the disappointing feeling in your stomach. You were working after all. But soon the expression on his face changed, not only was he not looking at you any more, he looked terrified and nervous.
His gaze was above your head now and you turn quickly to find whatever was suddenly more interesting than you.
Behind you there was nothing but a marble water fountain, that you found ridiculously tacky by the way, and random party guests, but no one was looking at him.
That’s when you looked up.
All black suit, the top buttons of his dress shirt undone and a glass of amber liquor in his hands he stared at you from a balcony of the house.
William Russo.
You turned back around quickly, feeling a rose blush cover your cheeks and you thank the universe your cover was supposed to be a doe eyed virgin because you were sure that’s how you looked.
The man that had been checking you out was long gone and you wondered if Russo had signaled something to him from up there.
Was he onto you?
“Well, well, well, what do we have here?”
The husky voice so close to your ear you jump slightly and turn around again, pulling your dress down as a reflex and taking a step back.
He was so close and he smelled of alcohol and cigarettes.
You wondered if it was his scent or the anxiety that was making your head spin slightly.
“What’s your name princess?”
He looked exactly like the pictures in his files and you cursed yourself for joking with your co workers about how attractive he was in them.
“How did you get here so quickly? You were just up there.”
You say pointing at the balcony, faking innocence to gain time. He looked up with a half smile.
“So you were looking at me?”
He took a step closer, reclaiming the one you had taken back seconds ago. His body so close to yours you could see the shinny black on black parsley pattern on his shirt, even in the dark room.
“Well I just- I was just looking around and I happened to see you up there.”
“Answer my question. What’s your name?”
“Bonnie.”
You lie quickly, with the fist southern name that comes into mind and he smiles again, letting his head fall back as if he can’t believe what you just said.
“Like the robber?”
You nod and feel your pulse begin to quicken when he reached for your wrist. His touch firm but gentle and warm, the veins on his arm popping up from the heat and the illicit substances in his body, you were sure.
“May I?”
His head nods in the direction of the make shift dance floor in the middle of the garden, where people are laughing and spilling champagne and your throat goes dry.
But you must keep going.
“You may.”
He is pulling on your arm slightly and you could swear the crowds move to let you pass like royalty. His hands slowly makes his way to your lower back, as if to guide you and the voice in your ear grows excited.
You make a mental note to ask your co worker to not narrate your missions as a football game when you hear him say you scored. As if dancing with a murderer meant you had already won.
“Tell me Bonnie, what brings you to my party?”
His large hands are on your waist now and you feel his squeeze ever so slightly from time to time. His fingertips making small circles on your covered skin.
“I didn’t know this was your party.”
You lie again, pulling inches away from his tight embrace, weary of the fact that if he got close enough he would hear the celebration of your mate.
“That’s a very pretty dress.”
His lips so close to your ear, his breath gave you chills.
“You wanna fuck?”
“Excuse me?”
Your surprise was genuine. Yes your cover was supposed to be a prude, but even if you weren’t you couldn’t believe the words out of his mouth. You released yourself of his arms and stood in the middle of the dance floor.
He stoped too.
“Come on, we’re both grown ups.” He laughed.
“I don’t know who you think you are, but I’m not that kind of girl.”
You voice sounds comical to you. You know perfectly well if the situation was different you would’ve gladly accepted his proposal.
‘Stick to the plan, babe.’
Frank’s words resonated in your head over and over when you saw your target take you by the wrist again and pull you to the edge of the dance floor.
Let me get you another drink, let’s talk about it.”
“Was I not clear enough? There’s nothing to talk about, I don’t even know you.”
“Everyone does!”
His smile was confident and it charmed you so easily you almost rolled your eyes at yourself.
“I don’t. You didn’t even tell me your name.”
You pout a little watching him grab a couple of champagne glasses from a waiter passing by. Trying to get you drunk to get in your pants was a plan you’d expect from a frat boy, not an international criminal.
“I’m William Russo. Friends call me Billy.”
You nod, whispering his name slowly, as if trying it out.
“And I like you. You look brand new.”
You try to ignore your co workers laugh on the wire when Billy shamelessly looked down your cleavage as he said this.
“I think you’re the new one Mr. Russo. I’ve lived in Brownsville all my life.”
“Well how about some of that southern hospitality you all speak so highly of.”
His hands were on your frame again, much smaller than him it was hard to avoid him moving you at his will. He got his lips closer to your neck this time.
The impulse to slap his face was strong, but you had to remind yourself that sweet small town girls would never slap a man. Or would they?
“What’s going on here?”
You freeze.
Your eyes growing big and terrified.
Frank’s voice behind you feels like someone dumped a bucket of water on you. This was not part of the plan.
“And you are?”
Billy’s voice is flat and warning and you take advantage of his distraction to break yourself free from his hands.
You face Frank with a puzzled look on your face. He is wearing a black hoodie and jeans, sticking out like a sore thumb in the sea of glamorous guests and he looks pissed.
“I’m her cousin, who are you?”

Chapter three
‘Two cappuccinos for table three, please.’
‘What’s the deal with cappuccinos, anyways?’ I said while grabbing two clean mugs, and quickly putting them on the coffee machine behind me.
‘Guess you’re good at them,’ Harper winked at me as she grabbed a clean rug and dried her hands with it.
‘No, but seriously, I like cappuccinos too but like, last time I prepared thirty in a little over an hour. I mean, is that healthy? And this is coming from someone who loves coffee!’
Harper laughed at my antics. ‘It’s a nice brewage! People just like cappuccinos,’ she shrugged, disappearing through the door and into the kitchen shortly after.
‘If they only liked tipping better…’ I mumbled.
‘I heard that!’ Harper shouted from the other room.
‘Damn it.’
My hands moved automatically as I prepared the drinks, carefully decorating the foamed milk on the mug and making sure not to spill anything as I took them to the couple sitting by the door of the café.
They barely acknowledged me when I set their cappuccinos on the table, giving a short nod in my general direction without taking their eyes off each other.
Rolling my eyes, I walked back to the counter, noticing that no new customers were waiting to be attended to. I sighed deeply, looking around the bar, busying myself with cleaning anything in sight, if only to have an excuse to avoid Billy’s dark frame on the corner, directly facing me as he pretended to read a book.
His Americano had definitely gone cold long ago, but he still took careful sips, his tongue occasionally making an appearance to lick the remains on his lips. It was a true sight to behold, but every time my eyes darted to him, his were already fixed on me. He had a sixth sense of knowing when someone was looking at him.
Harper had even complimented his eyes, which would only inflate his ego more.
‘What?’ she had asked after noticing the glare I sent her. ‘Your boyfriend’s cute.’
‘He’s not my boyfriend,’
‘Well, he certainly keeps looking your way,’ the older woman winked at me.
‘Yeah, that’s not it at all,’
‘Whatever rows your boat,’ she only laughed at me as she kept counting the money at the register, making me sigh deeply.
I absolutely adored Harper. She had taken me in the second I came stumbling into her café, wet from the sudden downpour and in heavy need of a job. Despite having no experience brewing coffee, she had thrown all reason out the window and given me a safe place beside her, becoming pretty much my sole source of income. Many hours had been spent between those four cozy wooden walls, hundreds of steaming mugs passed along, and thousands of faces asking for a drink before going on with their lives. And despite the stress and the neverending shifts, and the too-sassy personality of its owner, HarpBrews Coffee had become my second home.
My phone pinged in my pocket. Discreetly grabbing it, I peered at Owen’s message, stating he would soon be walking through the door. I took a deep breath checking the hour on the big grandfather clock on the side of the café. The afternoon rush hour had already ended, yet a few customers still came for their boost drinks before heading out to the Friday nightlife they loved so much. Unfortunately for me, I still had a few papers to write, and a late shift to cover, all while the exhaustion of having slept four hours was starting to take a toll on my body.
Putting my phone away, I caught Billy’s eyes on me again. He was slowly turning the book's page, not even bothering to pretend he hadn’t been caught. I raised my eyebrow at him but didn’t say anything. Only when he leaned his head to the side I finally walked up to him.
‘Doesn’t your butt hurt?’ I asked, grabbing his empty mug. ‘You’ve been sitting there for three hours without moving.’
‘It’s been three hours already? Wow, time does fly when you’re having fun,’ he smirked, checking his expensive wristwatch and widening his eyes.
‘You’re hilarious. You should audition for the circus, I heard they’re running out of clowns,’ I said with a shake of my head.
Billy put down his book. ‘Amazing wordplay, ten out of ten,’ he clapped slowly, but the mischief in his eyes didn’t leave.
‘Can I get you anything else?’ I asked him, hoping not to hear his comeback.
‘What’s your specialty?’
‘Cappuccinos, apparently.’
‘Sure, let’s see what the fuzz is all about,’ he said, leaning back again on his chair and picking up the book.
I sighed, walking back to the bar and preparing, yet again, his own cappuccino.
‘Please, don’t spit in it.’
‘I wouldn’t dream of it, Mr. Russo,’ I called back, making sure to keep a smile on my face after noticing the many heads that turned my way.
I internally groaned, already knowing some of them would be leaving immediately, their tips long forgotten.
Only when I grabbed the cocoa powder I stopped my hands. I held the plastic template in between shaky fingers, debating whether or not Billy deserved some cocoa design on his foam. A small part of my brain was slapping itself at my childish resentment, but an even bigger part was slapping the other for even doubting. It was Harper coming back from the kitchen and seeing me with the cocoa in my hands that made me move, carefully sprinkling the powder on the mug until it took the shape of the open book of the template.
‘He reads too?’ she whispered when I passed her by, setting the mug on a tray, together with a clean spoon and a napkin.
My stomach grumbled right as I picked it up, the realization of not having eaten anything in a while finally catching up to me. I looked over at Billy, who hadn’t eaten anything either, but this time it did seem he was too preoccupied with his book. I glanced at the small counter displaying Harper’s baking, and with another sigh, I picked up a vanilla cookie and placed it on a small plate, bringing everything to Billy.
He raised his eyebrows once I approached his table, setting everything before him.
For the first time since I met him, he seemed genuinely surprised.
‘Oh, thank you, Dana, you didn’t have to,’ he set the book on the other edge of the table, eyeing the latte art on his cappuccino.
I shrugged. ‘Yeah, well, you must be hungry. It’s on the house, by the way.’
Nobody said anything else, for the small bell by the door rang, and Owen’s smile greeted me as soon as I turned my head to face the sound.
‘Waddup?’ he took me in his embrace, hugging my waist tightly for a few seconds before removing his arms. He barely moved away, regardless.
‘Hey, what took you so long?’ I asked him, motioning with my head to sit on one of the empty tables nearby the counter.
Owen unloaded his bag on the table, pulled out his laptop and phone, and took a seat as he adjusted his dirty blond fringe that fell unceremoniously over his eyes after taking his beanie off.
‘Sorry about that, Mrs. Russell was on a rant about the newest councilmen appointment and we pretended to be interested in it so she would forget about last week’s assignment.’
‘You didn’t turn it in?’
‘I didn’t do it,’ he said with a shrug, laughing it off.
I shook my head at the boy, remaining silent as the coffee machine whistled behind me, brewing yet more coffee despite the late hour.
‘Latte macchiato for me, please, if I take more caffeine I’ll dig a hole in the floor from buzzing,’ Owen called, his fingers already typing on his laptop.
I laughed at his comment, knowing how many energy drinks he was capable of ingesting over a day.
‘You sure your heart can bear more of it?’ I asked him, placing our coffees down on the table.
‘It can now that you’re here,’ he winked at me, his eyes focusing once again on the screen before him.
Rolling my eyes, I went into the back of the café to retrieve my bag, ignoring the chime of the bell at the front door.
‘Harper, I’m on my break!’
‘Okey dokey!’
Harper’s chirping voice was heard at the bar, welcoming whoever had nothing better to do than having a coffee so late in the evening.
I quickly unknotted my apron and hung it on its respective hanger, pulling my hair out of its bun and pulling my sweater over my shoulders, knowing the lack of movement would become a problem later.
Walking out of the kitchen, I was shocked when I saw Frank Castle sitting down next to Billy, talking in hushed voices. I didn’t fail to notice the third person sitting with them, worried concentration drawn on her beautiful face.
I walked in hurried steps back to Owen, who was sipping on his coffee completely unaware of the rising tension on the table behind him. His back was to them, allowing me to slide on the opposite seat, getting a clear view of the three adults.
The sound the chair made when I dragged it back caught the attention of the two ex-marines, who quickly glanced up at me. I waved inadvertently at Frank, still awkward in his presence, but he returned the gesture by silently nodding his head at me.
The moment ended as soon as Harper returned to their table with steaming mugs for the two newcomers, the little party returning to their hushed conversation as if they had been going at it for hours and not just a few minutes.
I shrugged and sat down.
‘Everything okay?’ Owen asked, his eyebrows drawn in concern at me.
I shook my head, not wanting to talk.
‘Yeah, just tired.’
‘Well, I hope you’re not too tired for this because I have no idea where to start and you’re the only one I trust enough to partner up with.’
‘Always the charmer, Owen,’ I sighed, opening a new tab on my laptop, and quickly typing down the topic of our latest academic torture.
‘Don’t get me wrong, I love working with you. But I love pissing Malcolm off even more.’
‘You guys did one project together weeks ago, you surely can’t keep the feud up.’
‘He’s an asshole. It’s his fault we failed.’
‘And now he’ll hate you forever after selling him out.’
‘He deserved it.’
‘Really rough strategy.’
‘Well, I’ll have my lawyer call his lawyer.’
‘You’re your own lawyer, Owen, this is why we’re doing this in the first place.’
Owen took a few seconds to reply, his fingers stopping over the keys while he arched one eyebrow at me. ‘Someone’s moody.’
I sighed once again, already feeling a faint thump appear at the back of my head. ‘Look, I don’t wanna mess the project up, and I barely got any sleep last night, so please, can we just… concentrate on this? So we don’t have to pull another last-minute all-nighter the day before the due date?’
My pleading seemed effective, for Owen raised his hands in the air and apologized before returning to the task at hand.
‘Alright, alright. Look, on the way here I read a few articles that could be helpful.’
‘Cool, text me the link, and I’ll give them a quick look.’
‘Not so fast, loca,’ he laughed to himself. ‘You gotta do something for me first.’
‘Wow, not five minutes in and you’re already blackmailing me? New record.’
I was staring at him through heavy lids, knowing his plans usually ended in disaster.
‘This one’s good, I promise.’
‘Spit it out, then.’
‘I text you the articles, and you go on a date with me tomorrow.’
The sweet taste of my mocha latte turned suddenly bitter. Loud coughs left my mouth as the liquid burned my lungs. From the rim of my eyes, I saw Billy and Frank’s eyes on me, their posture tense, ready to pounce. I shook my head, only I didn’t know who it was meant for.
‘What the actual fuck, Owen?’ I managed to ask between coughs.
He glanced up innocently as if we had been talking about clouds.
‘What? ‘
‘You can’t be serious.’
‘I am. I’ve been meaning to ask you out for a while now but it never seemed appropriate.’
Owen was now stirring his beverage a little too nonchalantly, but the little tick in his fingers made the spoon tremble ever so slightly.
‘And you think now is appropriate?’
My voice was a little hoarse, and my throat burned slightly, but I was determined to put the boy in his place.
‘It was a joke, Dana, you don’t have to be so defensive all the time!’ he brought the screen down and rested his elbows on the table, staring into my eyes. ‘Look, maybe this wasn’t the right way to ask you out, but I promise, I’m not kidding. We work well together, and you’re pretty hot, and I think we could make a nice couple if you’d give me chance.’
I stared at him for a while, scanning his face, looking for any indication that he wasn’t being genuine. I found none.
‘Look, Owen…’ I wanted to reply, but he cut me to it.
‘Just one date. If it goes well, we’ll see what we do from then. If it goes wrong, I won’t bother you again,’ he raised his hands again. His body moved as if he were trying to appease a looming beast. His eyes, though, held a confidence I had barely seen before.
‘Just one. After we’re done with the project,’ I added as soon as his lips broke in a giant smile. They quivered slightly at the afterthought but nodded his head fervently regardless.
‘Deal.’
‘Will you send me the links now?’
‘On it.’
···
We mostly worked in silence after that, only breaking it to share a few comments here and there. Harper had thankfully filled in, going as far as allowing me to double my break so we could get some work done.
‘Alright, so I’ll keep researching this and you write the rest?’ Owen confirmed.
I nodded. ‘Yeah, it honestly won’t take me long. On Monday we can meet up again and go over the next point,’ I said, rubbing my eyes.
The little mascara I had applied in the morning had certainly worn off during the day, but I didn’t care. I was too exhausted, and I still had another hour to fill.
‘Sounds great. You going out later? Jeremy said he was throwing a party,’
‘I don’t think I’ll be alive by then,’ I said in a low voice, closing down my books and putting everything away in my bag.
‘Honestly, I don’t know how you do it.’
‘Me either.’
‘I’ll text you tomorrow. If the summaries aren’t on the shared file in the evening, feel free to call and scream at me despite my future hangover,’ Owen said with a short hug.
‘Will probably do,’ I answered back as he waved and left, the café almost too silent with his absence.
Only the small party of three refused to leave their seats.
‘Everything alright over here? Can I get you guys anything?’ I asked them, knotting my apron behind my back with practiced expertise, and pulling my hair up once again despite the strain in my arms.
‘I could use an espresso,’ Frank said, looking at me with somewhat of a smile.
‘Me too, I’m in for a long night,’ the woman replied with a kinder tone, giving me a wide smile.
‘Dana, this is Karen Page, one of the best lawyers in town and a close friend of ours,’ Billy spoke up.
Realization dawned on me as I stared at the woman, my eyes widening.
‘Oh, my gosh, I’m a huge fan of your work,’ I shook her outstretched hand a little too enthusiastically, but she didn’t seem to care.
‘Thank you, I’ve heard a lot about you too,’ she grinned.
She stood out, sitting in front of both men, with kind eyes and sweetness of manner, despite knowing how deadly she could be in her field. She truly was someone I admired dearly and had quickly become one of my main motivators to become a lawyer.
Going back to the bar to prepare their orders, Harper tapped me on the shoulder.
‘You’re seriously gonna date the lanky kid over that greek god?’ she whispered while she untied her apron.
I rolled my eyes at her. ‘Yeah.’
‘Did you bump your head this morning?’ she rested her hands on her waist.
‘I’m perfectly fine, thank you,’ I wasn’t looking at her anymore. ‘That greek god over there is old enough to be my father.’
‘But he isn’t, is he?’ she wiggled her eyebrows. ‘How am I the oldest here? You should be out having fun on a Friday night with the fine specimen that has been eyeing you the entire evening, yet you’re closing down the café,’ she threw her hands in the air, her voice a little louder.
I shushed her, noticing Billy’s eyes on us for a few seconds.
‘Yeah, well, I’m trying to be a responsible adult,’ I shrugged, pouring the hot espresso onto two smaller mugs.
‘Hell, I’m a responsible adult and still go out,’ Harper waited for me at the bar as I brought the mugs back to Billy’s table.
‘Thank you so much, Dana!’ Karen grinned appreciatively at me, quickly bringing the mug to her lips.
‘Careful, it’s still a bit hot.’
‘It’s perfect, thank you,’ she winked at me, making me chuckle softly at her before returning to Harper’s side.
‘Look, I just want you to have fun once in a while,’ Harper went back at it.
I looked down at my feet, wishing to escape the lecture she was about to give.
‘I know, and trust me, I do have fun,’ I said.
We were no longer whispering, but the place was too deserted for us to care.
‘Reading at home is not the kind of fun I’m talking about,’ she sent me a pointed glance.
‘Well, I’m happy being by myself, Harper. I don’t need as much social interaction as everyone seems to think I do,’ I sighed, busying myself with cleaning the coffee machine, somehow knowing no one else would be ordering anything else for the rest of my shift.
‘Dana, I know your life hasn’t been easy these past years but you still deserve to be young and have fun. Hell, I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but maybe going out on a date with Owen isn’t a bad idea. At least you’ll talk with someone your age for once,’
‘Hey, I talk to people my age all the time,’ I defended myself.
‘Your classmates don’t count. I mean friends, Dana, actual friends. Not just colleagues, or neighbors, or even me.’
‘Harper…’
‘I know, I know. You’re happy. I just worry about you, that’s all.’
‘Well, don’t. I promise there is nothing to worry about. Now off you go, I know your secret man is waiting for you,’ I gently pushed her out of the way in the direction of the main door.
Harper smiled almost shyly at me, some color going to her cheeks.
‘Alright, I’m leaving. The kitchen’s clean, all that is left is the main part,’ she said, zipping up her coat. She let her hair down, making her look even younger, and matching her lively personality. ‘Don’t burn the place down while I’m gone.’
She opened the door, not without turning the Open sign backward to show the Closed written on the other side.
‘Won’t do,’ I was basically pushing her away. At least one of us would be having fun tonight.
‘Oh, and tomorrow don’t bother coming, I’m giving you the day off. You know where the check is!’
She turned and ran to the other side of the street, expertly avoiding the cars and walking with a happy strut.
I sighed, almost relieved at her absence, basking in the silence of the café despite the still low conversation taking place at the far end. Closing the door and drawing the curtains, I walked back to the kitchen, grabbed the cleaning supplies, and walked to the front yet again.
Billy caught my actions, walking to me as I started wiping the tables and bringing the chairs on top to wipe the floor.
‘You closing already?’ he asked me directly.
The sudden sound almost startled me. Hearing him address me after hours of nonexistent conversation had left my skin bare. The pounding in my head seemed to diminish slightly.
I shook my head. ‘I’m just cleaning out. I still got another thirty minutes, you can finish whatever you guys are doing.’
He nodded unconvinced, yet walked back to his table.
My body moved automatically, my mind blank and my eyes laced with exhaustion. I noticed Billy’s table full of papers and binders, with Karen scribbling down every so often. Some part of me wondered what they were working on, but then I remembered. The less I knew the better.
Shaking my head, I did a once-over, checking everything was clean and back to its respective place. With only ten minutes to go, I whisked my phone off my pocket, mindlessly scrolling through Twitter, and wishing time would pass by faster.
‘Hi,’ Karen suddenly spoke before me. I jumped a bit in my place, not expecting to find the woman with her and Frank’s empty mugs on the counter. ‘Sorry for scaring you, I just wanted to bring you these. The coffee was amazing, by the way, the best I’ve ever had,’ she smiled at me.
I grinned back at her. ‘Aw, thank you. You don’t have to lie, though, there’s better coffee out there,’ I said, quickly washing the mugs and leaving them to dry.
She shook her head. ‘No, really, it was amazing. From now on I know where to get my daily dose,’ she winked again, her good humor instantly lifting my mood.
‘Well, we’ll be waiting with open arms,’ I laughed softly, immediately liking the idea of seeing her around.
For a split second I wondered how she could be friends with someone like Frank and Billy, but then again, how could I be friends with someone like Harper?
‘Well, I don’t know if Billy told you, but I’m also working on your case,’ she slid her hand over mine, her warm fingers wrapping around my hand and squeezing in sweet comfort. ‘Whatever you need, you can come to me, alright?’ she looked deeply into my eyes.
I froze, not expecting her forwardness, but nodded in appreciation nonetheless.
‘Thank you, Karen.’
I didn’t know what else to say, but thankfully Frank came to my aid. Or rather, Karen’s.
He slid a hand over her waist, the lightbulb suddenly going on over my head.
‘Really good coffee, Dana.’
He nodded at me, always the same short bow of his head. I’d like to think it was our way of greeting each other, even though I knew I wouldn’t be seeing him again once all this was over.
‘Thank you, Frank.’
‘We should get going,’ Billy finally spoke.
I noticed their now empty table was shining, the strong bleach smell coming from the only corner I hadn’t been able to clean due to it being occupied by them. Billy was now placing the dirty rag on the sink.
‘You cleaned it?’ I asked incredulously.
He simply shrugged. ‘It’s the least I could do. I’ve been sitting there the whole time.’
I shook my head in disbelief, opting for grabbing my things. I picked the envelope under the kitchenware cabinet, Harper’s preferred spot to hide my paycheck in case we were ever robbed. I looked at the three green bills, deflating a little despite knowing it wouldn’t be much, but I still put on a smile and raised my head, noticing the three pairs of eyes on me.
‘You can leave already, I’m just gonna head back one second,’ I said, putting the envelope on the counter and heading to the small room we used to keep our stuff while we worked. Putting on my coat, grabbing my bag, and making sure the lights at the back were off, I returned to the three adults waiting for me.
It felt weird. I wasn’t technically friends with either of them, but the way they all stood protectively in front of me as if I were some defenseless little girl –which I technically was, almost make me long for a stronger friendship. Both men were intimidating enough, clad in dark attire and harsh demeanors, and Karen, despite her softer features, was still a force to be reckoned with. I could only aspire to become half the lawyer she was, and with the three of them in their expensive clothing, with real jobs and real lives, I was brought once again to the reality of the situation.
With a small sigh, I followed them to the door, making sure to close the establishment behind me, suddenly the prospect of going home to the peace I desperately needed broke by the realization of having Billy with me.
‘Well, gentlemen, I better be going,’ Karen said out loud. ‘Dana, it was a pleasure to meet you. I know we’ll be seeing each other soon,’ she brought me into her arms, another unexpected comforting gesture from her.
Her presence was calming, which I thoroughly appreciated.
‘You too, Karen,’ I grinned at her.
‘I’ll walk you,’ Frank offered. His voice was still deep, and despite his offering, it almost felt like he grumbled his words.
But Karen paid no attention, sending him a warm smile, and interlocked her arm with his.
‘Goodnight, guys. Billy, behave,’ Karen glared at Billy, eliciting another chuckle from me.
I nodded at Frank before he could, and despite catching him off-guard, he reciprocated the movement, and the two turned the other way and left, Karen laughing loudly at whatever Frank had said.
I stared at the two, warmth filling my heart at the thought of them being together. They sure made some odd couple, but there was no denying the sparkle that filled both of their eyes when they looked at each other. It felt nice, knowing even Frank had someone who could bring the sun into his dangerous life.
Billy coughed beside me, effectively snapping me from my daydream.
‘Ready to go?’
‘Yeah.’
His hand on my back guided me toward his car, thankfully parked not far away from the entrance. He opened the door for me again, his eyes looking around the dark street, before walking around and getting into the driver’s seat.
I hissed at a particularly big thump of my skull, massaging my temples hoping the growing headache would go away.
‘You okay?’ Billy asked, briefly looking at me before returning his eyes to the road.
‘Just some tension. Hopefully, I’ll get some sleep tonight.’
I noticed the way his leg pushed the pedal a bit more, the speed of the car increasing.
‘Then let’s get you to bed,’ he answered.
‘I wanna have dinner first, though.’
He bit his lip. ‘I may have ordered something for us already. It should be ready once we get there.’
I widened my eyes. ‘Billy, you didn’t have to.’
‘You got me a cookie earlier, this is my way of saying thanks.’
‘You can’t compare a cookie to a full dinner.’
He shrugged his shoulders. ‘For someone with a headache, you sure wanna fight.’
I scoffed, despite the truth in his words. I simply leaned back on the seat and closed my eyes. I felt the passing lights on my eyelids, but the soft roaring of the engine and the silence surrounding us helped calm my racing thoughts.
It was shortly after that Billy was parking the car, the sudden halt making me open my eyes.
‘We’re here,’ Billy announced but made no move. ‘Am I gonna have to carry you upstairs too?’
With that, I quickly unbuckled myself, almost jumping out of the car and closing the door loudly. I wanted to believe that the warmth in my cheeks was only due to the exhaustion, and not at the thought of Billy carrying me in his arms.
He followed me into the building, crashing into my back when I stopped abruptly right before the stairs at the sight of the old man with the nastiest scowl.
I winced.
‘Mr. Morrison, a pleasure to see you!’ I drew a wide smile on my lips, praying that he would leave soon.
‘Miss Jones, you’re late. It’s almost Saturday,’ he glanced at his wristwatch, an almost hungry smile on his face. ‘A few more minutes and I’d have to evict you.’
I knew that’s exactly what he wanted, but I kept in my remarks. ‘And, as promised, here’s the week’s payment,’ I grabbed the envelope, opening it to grab the right amount, and noticing the fourth bill right away.
I furrowed my eyebrows, knowing Harper hadn’t given it to me.
‘And who’s the rich kid behind you? You know you’re not allowed to bring anybody in without my permission!’ he was fuming. The old man descended the steps, taking the money from my trembling fingers without looking away from Billy.
‘I’m Billy Russo,’ he introduced himself. He didn’t make an effort to extend his hand for Mr. Morrison to shake, though.
The old man paled instantly. His eyes widened at Billy, who sent him a harsh glare while Mr. Morrison found the right words to say.
‘Oh, it certainly is a pleasure, Mr. Russo,’ he immediately hid the money in his pocket and proceeded to adjust his shirt. ‘What can we humbly offer you on this fine night, Mr. Russo?’
‘Well, I believe you’re exploiting some of the residents in this building complex. I know rent prices went up last month, but nearly not enough to completely leave them with no income,’ he continued.
I was left speechless. I hadn’t told Billy about my ongoing feud for my rent, but as always, Billy seemed to know everything about me and my life. It only reminded me how little I knew of him.
‘Oh, well, you see, Mr. Russo, Miss Jones here…’ but Billy cut him off.
‘Here, take this,’ Billy grabbed a sealed envelope from a pocket inside his expensive jacket. ‘And if you happen to bother Miss Jones again, I’ll make sure the finest lawyers of New York City know about the many irregularities that take place here.’
He looked at him with that stoic yet fierce glare, the same look he had used with me in the interrogation room just twenty-four hours before. It felt like a lifetime, and it once again showed the many sides to Billy Russo that I wasn’t aware of.
Mr. Morrison only shook in his place, taking the envelope with shaky hands and lowering his head, moving aside to let Billy walk by and up the stairs.
I followed after him, too stunned to say anything at first, but with too many questions swirling around.
‘Did you extort him?’
‘I bought him.’
Silence.
‘Did you leave the hundred dollar bill on my envelope at the café?’
‘Yeah.’
‘Why?
‘Just a tip.’
Silence, once again. We reached the door to my apartment, heavy silence following us into the dark entrance.
‘What were you reading earlier?’
‘The Picture of Dorian Gray.’
‘How fitting.’

Mise en Place - A "choose your own adventure" style fic - Part 3
Tumblr media
Fandom: Punisher AU Rating: Mature Pairing: Billy Russo x OC Warnings: Dark!Fic, threats, murder, obsession, swearing, violence, blood, and likely more to be added... Summary: Nadine thought her biggest problem was helping to keep the restaurant she worked at afloat as the neighbourhood starts being bought out from under them. A chance meeting in an elevator with an old fling proves differently…
Notes: There's a lot of violence in this chapter. Heed the warnings. The last vote was a tie so I made the final call. Nadine...uses her knives to defend herself.
Part 1 / Part 2 /
Previously: “What are you doing in my house?” “Waiting for you, Nadine.” He grins and steps forward….
Tumblr media
She doesn’t have a lot of options. The door is locked behind her and if she wants to open it, she would need to turn her back on him. She already knows that’s a bad idea.
“Me? Do we know each other?”
“We will,” he says. Her hand moves to her side, drawing out the wrapped cloth bundle from her tote. She grabs the handle that sticks out first. It’s her boning knife. It sits in her hand like an extension of herself. She drops the bundle back in the tote and puts it on the ground before kicking it out of the way.
The man looks at it and laughs. With its long thin blade, it doesn’t look like much but she’s used it a thousand times taking apart different animals in her work. It’s familiar in a way that he isn’t.
“Do you even know what to do with that, girl?”
She shifts it in her hand, trying not to let the comment rankle. It shouldn’t surprise her. Many don’t know what it takes to reach her skill. She ignores the desire to snap back. He’s large and threatening and she reminds herself that he’s just another animal. She’s broken down many, dozens of times before. She’s not going to make this easy for him. Whatever he succeeds in taking from her will cost him.
“You’re a chef,” he says, trying to antagonize her. “What are you going to do? Mince me?”
She shifts her weight, setting one foot slightly behind her. It seems to amuse him further. Nadine’s not stupid. She’s a single woman in the city and has always been seen as an easier target due to her size. She’s taken self-defence classes throughout her years at school. He knows her name. She wonders what else he knows about her.
He lunges forward.
She pivots on her heel, knife sliding against flesh as she moves out of his way. Blood splatters against the floor as he swears, his hand pressing against the sudden wound.
“Bitch!”
She simply turns to face him. She can hear her instructor’s voice in her head: make good cuts, let the knife do the work. She’s not using a saw and should avoid the joints but there are other places to cut, ones that will maximize the damage she can do in the time she has to ensure he cannot attack. Tendons and large muscle groups, kidneys and liver.
He strikes again. He’s not trying to get ahold of her, or do any serious damage.  It’s like he’s playing with her to draw this out. Fucker.
She doesn’t manage to avoid him this time, getting the breath knocked out of her sharply as she’s shoved back into the side table by her couch. She nearly goes toppling over it. She forces herself to breathe through the pain. Focus, she can practically hear her instructor say. Think about the step you’re on, not what comes next. The memory is burned into her from the repetition.
She darts forward, ducking under his swing and swipes her knife up. It slides into the soft flesh of his armpit and she can feel it scrape across bone before she pulls it out. The man screams.
It doesn’t stop him though and he uses the moment she needs to retrieve her knife to grab her hair. He yanks it back, taking her with it. She swings the knife down and away from her, catching him on the leg. It slips across and down his inner thigh. He lets go of her hair as he tries to put pressure on the wound. She scrambles back, kicking out and catching him hard in the knee. He falls as she gets to her feet, struggling to catch her breath as she watches the man curse, trying to pull himself away from her.
How long until he bleeds out? She hit an artery based on the amount of blood that’s spreading around him. She’s never going to get her security deposit back now. She laughs a little, wondering if she might be in shock. Her head is swimming. She’s definitely bruised from where she hit that table.
He’s still moaning. She’s never actually had to watch something die before. The animals she worked with were always dead first. Maybe she should call an ambulance…It would be easy, she thinks, to even disassemble the body herself but transporting it would be a pain and she still has no clue why he was here or if he was working alone.
Either way, she needs help.
Where is her phone?

A/N: I wanted Wade to be in more chapters and talk more but he’s a danger and I don’t trust myself with his power -Danny
Words: 2,020
Phase Six Masterlist
Previous Chapter // Next Chapter
Listen to: ‘Vigilante Shit’ -by Taylor Swift
Tumblr media
xxvi: White, Red, Blue, and Black
Kurt got to punch her after all, and she got to punch him back a few times as well. Wade videoed the process. "I'm going to play this at your Avenger's graduation ceremony," he said.
"You'll never be inside an Avenger's compound if we can help it," she put her cloak on.
"Why didn't you call Yelena instead of this clown?" Kurt seized a pair of handcuffs.
"I did," she let him put the handcuffs around her wrists. "Wade answered."
"I took her phone," the mercenary explained, unwrapping a lollipop and lifting his mask up a bit to eat it. "She was taking all of my employers."
"Well, if you were trustworthy they would hire you and not her."
"I meant she's killing them," Wade clarified.
"Oh," Kurt grabbed a second pair of handcuffs and Cat helped him put it on. "Have you considered working for the government? I mean it's basically the same as the mafia but at least they give you a retirement plan."
"Ha! I don't plan on retiring unless is to the lovely hands of Lady Death," Deadpool smirked. "Are you?"
"Not anytime soon," she nodded at his phone. "What did Russo say?"
"He's waiting," Wade laughed, he sounded a little crazy. "This will be fun."
"So you're like a good mercenary now, or..?" Kurt inquired, stepping closer to the man and handing him his blaster.
"He helps whoever likes best at the moment," Cat replied as Wade put their weapons in his Hello Kitty gym bag.
"She said you'd pay me with Stark Tech," Wade added as he towards the door.
"I never said that."
"Okay, one million's more than enough."
"I see why you're friends," Kurt teased her.
"I hate to say this, but quit the talking!" Wade left the lollipop in his mouth and turned to them. "Time to look unconscious."
Cat sighed. "The dumbest plans are always a success, the dumbest plans are always a success..." She muttered, allowing Wade to carry her over his shoulder.
Tumblr media
"Coming through!" Wade was making a show of himself, swinging the bodies as he walked into the villa. "Where is my pretty boy, Krueger? I got his chew toys!"
Cat heard a guard speaking through his coms, someone approached and took her vitals. She kept her eyes closed, dangling like a ragdoll. "The babies are napping," Wade continued. "This one was already blue when I found him."
"Let him through," a voice ordered.
"Thanks! I'll take a Dr. Pepper on the rocks. Send my dinner upstairs, Alfred."
Someone muttered just how much they hated Wade, but she was thankful for his presence, the louder he was, the less they would pay attention to her and Kurt. Deadpool took them to the second floor, and then to the office on that level.
"Hi, boss, has anyone told you how ravishing you look this evening?"
"For once keep your mouth shut, Wilson," the man replied rudely. "Let me see them."
Wade threw them onto the carpet. "She doesn't look like the Gorgon I remember, but Bob said she was..."
Russo rolled her sideways to examine her face. "Those scars... I did those."
"Cute," Wade said indifferently. "I'll take cash."
Russo got up again. "Over here..."
Cat felt Kurt stirring and she kicked him lightly, they had to wait. She heard Billy shuffling a few papers, then gave Wade a thick envelope. Wade weighed it on his palm and turned to leave. "Later, handsome!"
The mutants heard Russo grabbing something else as Wade walked out and closed the door behind him. A familiar beeping echoed and ignited the fly-or-flight reaction in her. Cat's eyes snapped open and she kicked the inhibitor out of Russo's hand as he crouched over her.
She teleported and hit his head, Kurt teleported to the door and opened it, Wade had just stabbed the guard standing outside. The mercenary cut Kurt's handcuffs in one quick action and tossed the blaster at him.
The guards downstairs heard the commotion and called for backup, running up the steps in Wade and Kurt's direction. Wade grasped his katanas and went to town, Kurt closed the door again and approached her and Billy, both of them still fighting, and held his blaster up with a menacing air.
"You're coming with us."
Billy reached for an ashtray on his desk and tossed it. Kurt dodged it and struck Russo in the face with the butt of his gun. Cat broke her handcuffs in half, they could hear men arriving at the scene outside the office. Wade was clearing their path of escape by cutting off limbs and impaling torsos.
She seized her spear and split it, turning on the taser mode. "You got new toys?" Billy laughed dryly. "Kraven will have fun with them."
"He's not here to help you now, so I guess I'll have my fun with you," she snarled.
Billy seized the gun on his belt and she hit his wrist with one of her batons, the touch shocked him, but it wasn't enough to take him out. Cat seized him by the throat and dragged him to the ground, Kurt kicked the door open and lifted his blaster ready to shoot whoever got in their way.
"You belong to me!" Billy barked at her wildly, and her eyes flared up with anger.
"Who does, William?" She kicked his face. As she did she shifted so her hair changed from silver to red. "Katrina?"
She didn't know how many men Russo had, but she guessed it had to be more than a hundred, and they would continue to come the more time they spent in that place. She picked the man up and pushed him towards the door, Kurt and Wade were already halfway down the stairs, trying to take down Russo's men.
She tried to kick him again but Russo stopped her foot and pulled it forward, she stumbled but punched his jaw as she went. "Who belongs to you, Billy?" She pressed in outrage, once again shifting to her original looks with brown curls and dark eyes. "C.C. or Cat? Copycat and the Gorgon? Who is it?"
"Call Kraven!" Billy shouted to his minions. "Tell him they're here!"
"You've been waiting for me?" She pushed forward driving him to almost topple over the railing of the second floor. "Missed me much?"
"Ardently," he sneered, trying to regain his footing. "Couldn't wait to gauge your eyes out myself."
She growled, quickly passing the sharp edge of her baton over his thigh, he was still strong enough not to cry out in pain. The fight had moved to the lower floor, where Deadpool was taking most men by himself. Kurt was shooting here and there, they hadn't brought ammunition for the blaster, so he was keeping count.
Russo kicked her, he hit her shin, and when she doubled he elbowed her, slipping away from her. He jumped at Kurt and they both fell down the stairs, it wasn't a hard fall, but Kurt landed on his back, and his gun slipped out.
Russo tried to take the blaster, but Cat threw one half of her spear and pierced his hand with it, she pinned it to the ground. He shrieked in pain and anger, seizing her weapon and pulling it out. Kurt rolled over, punching the man in the process, he crawled away and teleported. Two men ran in their direction shooting like crazy, and Kurt showed up behind them and took their guns.
Cat summoned the spear's half by pressing a button on the one baton she still had in her possession, the half flew to her the whole thing stuck back together, forming the spear again. She jumped off the railing in front of Russo, who had Kurt's blaster and was now shooting at her. Cat covered herself with the jaguar cloak, and a blast of light coming from her right shot the weapon out of Billy's grip, Wade was using her blaster.
"GET OUT!"
As he ran out of sight he tossed her the gun and she caught it. Russo saw a glimpse of the logo on her back as she pushed the cloak back in place, and he laughed cynically. "An Avenger? Is that what you think you are?"
"What I am is none of your business," Cat said, returning to her mutant looks. She pointed at his face with the blaster, then pressed something in her gun and a blueish light ignited from a side. "None of me belongs to you."
"If my people in New York don't hear from me, Mr. Keener will die."
"I don't negotiate with terrorists," she shrunk her spear and hung it on her belt. "Where is Kraven?"
Russo pressed something in the inner pocket of his suit, explosions came from every corner of the house and threw her and Russo out through the wide windows behind her. Cat's suit and cloak protected her from the blast and shielded her from falling on the rough pavement. Kurt teleported mid-blast and he was now over her, checking her vitals.
"Mimi—"
"I'm fine," she coughed out a bit of blood but it wasn't serious, she'd bit her tongue. Cat squirmed at the taste. "Jerk had a proper welcome ready for us..."
"Wade's inside—" he said frantically. Cat laughed, then coughed again and responded. "He'll be fine."
"The whole place fell down on him!" he insisted.
"He'll get over it," she spat out blood before pushing him away. "Don't lose Russo."
The aforementioned man was stumbling towards a vehicle, she had to admit he was resilient. Kurt picked up her blaster and shot two times at the car, ruining its tires. He lifted the blaster a third time, but Cat pushed the blaster back down.
"Wait," she said, weirdly quiet. "Let me have this."
Kurt nodded. "I'll look for Deadpool."
She took the blaster from him. "Be careful."
Cat got up and walked towards the man, Russo was trying to get away as fast as possible as injured as he was. She drew out her spear again and without a second thought, she extended it, turned on the blades, and flung it to the man's leg. Russo screamed in pain and tried to pull it out, but it had gone too deep, it had pierced through and stuck to the pavement.
He looked back at her, pale and sweaty, there was nothing left of the handsome man he'd once been. Cat raised her blaster and pressed the button on the side once more, then pulled the trigger. A projectile came out, but it didn't pierce Russo's skin, instead, it wrapped around his throat releasing a discharge strong enough to make him kneel, ripping the muscle where the spear had cut through.
"Not nice, is it?" She got to him and shrunk her spear to release him. "I know."
Cat shot him again, this time aiming at his crotch. Russo fell with foam coming out of his mouth, she looked at the scene with a crooked grin. His suit was torn apart and covered in blood, dirt, and sweat, it was a gross sight. She could even smell a bit of urine after the shock on his crotch.
"Here's what's going to happen, Willy," she crouched, pulling the wire off his neck roughly. "You'll tell New York to drop the mission, and then..." she pressed the blaster's barrel against his left eyelid. "You'll give me Kraven."
He stammered, eyes red, and nose bleeding. "He-He'll kill you before you can g-get to him."
Cat pressed the blaster tighter against his face. "I would love to kill you..." she grabbed him like he used to do to her, squeezing his face tightly with one hand, her claws making him bleed. "But that would give the impression that I fear what'll happen if I let you live."
The mutant pulled the gun out of the way, hung it back under her cloak, and stared at him with cold eyes. "I'm not afraid of you," she held onto his face tighter, and blood flowed slowly down her fingers. "I'll kill Kraven, and you... what's that thing you said to me before?"
The mutant grabbed her baton while still holding him in place and pressed the taser against his ribcage, she let go of him and turned the weapon on to its highest level. Billy Russo let out a contained scream, his jaw too tense to let out proper noise. He fell, barely conscious.
"Justice at last," Cat's gaze was hungry. "I won."
