"Far Down Far," the second single from Silkroad's upcoming album with Rhiannon Giddens, American Railroad, is out now, along with this live performance video of the song. Composed by Silkroad artist and Celtic harper Maeve Gilchrist, "Far Down Far" is inspired by the jig "The Far Down Farmer," transformed by the stories and sounds of the Irish laborers who toiled over the building of the railroads. You can also hear it here.

COUCH TOURING WITH CAFFE LENA TV
BRUCE MOLSKY/MAEVE GILCHRIST, 23 MARCH 2023
BEPPE GAMBETTA, 24 MARCH 2023
This venerable Saratoga Springs, NY, folk club has a fairly robust apparatus for streaming concerts and I have enjoyed Vieux Farka Toure and the Old Blind Dogs from them with minimal incident. BRUCE MOLSKY, starting yet another interesting project with harper MAEVE GILCHRIST, and BEPPE GAMBETTA are, like the Dogs, old Focal Point favorites. That they were on successive nights was unusual, but sure, let’s do it.
There were some temporary glitches the first night (and I had some on a different device from usually reliable Small’s Live Tuesday night), sadly, the BEPPE GAMBETTA show froze repeatedly requiring reboots and the stream seemed to skip like warped vinyl. I closed it off halfway through the second set. Both shows will be available for another week, so I may give them as shows a second chance, but I will hesitate before reupping with Caffe Lena TV.
That disappointment comes because my expectations for these artists is so high. We got to see BRUCE MOLSKY at the Hiawatha Music Festival while on vacation last summer in concerts, dances, and workshops and he still makes it to the Focal Point. He is such a solid fiddler, full of technique and taste. Like Kevin Burke among others, he makes it seem effortless and it sneaks up on you that he actually just did something amazing. He is proudly an old time fiddler and yet he plays with Balkan, Irish, Finnish, Cajun, and Swedish musicians, bringing his tradition in conversation with the others and seamlessly playing the other musics too. So now he’s working with MAEVE GILCHRIST who is from Scotland but has Irish relatives (not, I think, a typical Scotch Irish story). This was hardly Scottish tune>old time medleys, though they did begin with a deliberate Irish air that settled into an old time tune. There were songs, contemporary but with tradition (Kate Rusby, a telling of an Australian shipwreck, Nic Jones, LInda—not Richard—Thompson) and Finnish, Shetlands (Fully and Newly Rigged Ship!!) and Metis tunes to go with the old time and Celtic elements.
They are heading out for some gigs and then a festival, but this seems to have been the tour opener. There was a bit of a settling in early as the fiddle found a way around the harp, but they worked that out. The banjo worked out more immediately, interestingly enough. Gilchrist has a fine voice and sense of tunes and songs, but it’s a weird instrument. Still she gave it some drive and it is after all somewhere between a guitar and a piano. I will always be interested in what Molsky does, so I’m glad we got to see this effort.
BEPPE GAMBETTA is a guitar geek’s dream—amazing flatpicking, certainly inspired by Doc Watson, but incredibly wide ranging. We gave up after he played a Verdi aria that he played at Doc’s visitation. He also did a couple of tunes from his collaboration with David Grisman celebrating Italian mandolin music (requires a Maybelle Carter approach to translate the duets to one guitar) and songs in Italian. One told an Italian outlaw tale not unlike Randall Collins which he also did. He mentioned Watson several times and we came back from one pause in the middle of a Blue Railroad Train>Brown’s Ferry Blues>Nashville Blues. But that, the Norman Blake tune, and an outro fiddle tune refracted through his part time residence in New Jersey, Fuhgedda About Me Not were the main bits of bluegrass/old time-y music. But even those were refracted through his harmonic complexities. His guitar instrumentals, though flat picked, struck me more related to the John Fahey/Leo Kotke fingerstyle tradition. As such they are even more amazing.
The above comments are, alas, not based on a full, uninterrupted version of the concert. Over time, the irritation will dissipate and I’ll think I have a sense of Beppe Gambetta 2023. But, for now, I’m aggravated and disinclined to return to Caffe Lena even as I want to keep checking in on the wonderful world of music The Focal Point opened up to us Kleindorfs and not just defaulting to jazz.

ahhhh! Salvi harps are so sexy aren't they! My teacher has one (not sure which model) that she plays with our city's symphony.
I've played for around 14 years but I started when I was really young (just about to turn eight) and I am not pursuing it professionally. It has and, I think, always will be just a hobby for me. That being said, I have played my share of weddings, retirement homes, and garden tours. I also played in a harp ensemble with between 3-6 harps total for about three years (until the pandemic happened and then we all went to uni in different provinces). I started learning in the folk harp tradition and I still consider that my primary area, but I did get classical training when I was a teenager. I have four harps, a black Aoyama Etude 46 named Godzilla (which has wheels, not to flex or anything), a Triplet Harps Catalina 34 (also known as Princess Catalina for being high maintenance), a Triplet Harps Christina 26 named Tacky, and a Harpsicle named Eska (short for Escargot) which I take to the beach to play. I used to have a Dusty Strings Ravenna 26 and I miss that lil' guy. I also rented a Lyon and Healy (I'm not sure the model I can't seem to find it on the website lol) 46 string for about a year before I got my Aoyama.
On pedal harp, my favourite genres are anything schmaltzy and I have been dabbling in jazz and Viennese waltzes. So if I had to pick an era, I'd say golden age of Hollywood film scores. On lever harp, I play mostly Irish and Scottish folk music with some Canadian fiddle tunes (Quebec, Prairies, BC; some French-Canadian and Métis, some Irish-Canadian, and some Ukrainian Canadian). Though I think my favourite harp composer is Deborah Henson-Conant; Nataliana is such a MOOD piece and anytime someone says," oh! harps are so angelic and relaxing!" I play the opening bars to Baroque Flamenco to spite them. In terms of listening on Spotify, Maeve Gilchrist does some amazing stuff. She is an Edinburgh folk harpist living in Boston and her music is a fascinating cross between Scottish folk and American Country music and it works somehow. I was lucky enough to do a week-long workshop with her a few years ago.
My only orchestra experience was playing with my high school's pit band for our musical production of Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, but I have to say, you and I are the exact opposites. Maybe because I have mostly been a solo performer, but I live for solos.
Okay, I gotta do this. Wanna gush about harps with me?
You mention orchestra so I assume you play pedal harp. How many harps do you own? What are they (Lyon & Healy, Aoyama etc.) & how many strings (I'm assuming at least one of yours is 46 or 47)? A lot of pedal harp players start on lever harp but barely touch it after they transition to pedal so do you still play lever harp in addition to your pedal harp--or some other kind of harp (wire-strung, Paraguayan, electric etc.)--or are you a strict classical pedal harp player?
Do your harps have names?
Do you mostly just play in orchestra or do you also play solo? Who are your favourite composers for harp and do you listen to any harpists on Spotify? What are your favourite genres/styles to play?
Omg I'm ALWAYS down. So yeah! I have a pedal harp, but I just got a lever harp as well just for fun lol. My pedal harp is a Lyon and Healy Style 100 Semi Grand built in 1973, and I named her Penelope Antonia♡ She is my greatest love. I have not named the lever harp yet. It is a Camac Isolde. I am planning on buying a proper concert grand soon, though. I'll be getting a Salvi Minerva. The Minerva will be my sixth harp that ive bought in my seven years of playinggg 😶 I started on lever but kept selling them as I moved up in skill and everything so now my sights are set on mastering ✨️both✨️. (I'm realizing how chaotic my answering is gonna be 😂). I was strictly classical, but now that I'm working with musicology more and am planning a career that isn't orchestra centric, I feel more able to do whatever I want. Right now, I'm still doing a lot of orchestral work, and I don't solo a lot which is 100% fine by me. I'm not a huge fan of soloing tbh. But when I do I LOVEEEEEEEE playing impressionistic or romantic pieces. The 19th and early 20th centuries are MY TIME (for music). Omg i love meeting other harpists you gotta tell me about your harps now PLS

Colin Dunne Edges of Light at Irish Arts Center - “Scuff, Patter, Chug, Poke, Swim: Expanding Definitions of Dance”
Tumblr media
Review by Siobhan Burke, June 6, 2017
“Mr. Dunne’s percussive dancing — performed both in the footwear known as hard shoes and, more adventurously, barefoot — functions as a fourth musician, his feet doing the work of a drummer as they scuff, patter, chug, poke and swipe at the floor. Irish dance, though inherently musical, can have a rote relationship to music, as if obeying rhythmic orders. But Mr. Dunne, who joins his wildly talented colleagues for about half of the numbers in this 70-minute show, is a soulful, integral part of the band.”

My Harry Potter OCs
Since gold, silver, and platinum are already taken, I call them the "Iridium Trio" after my personal favorite precious metal. Enjoy!

Childhood home: Griffith Manse, Cornwall Pet: Kalim (melanistic Maine coon cat) Eye color: Stormy grey Hair color: Long, black, fine Other physical characteristics: Thin and muscular. First year at Hogwarts: 1989 House: Slytherin Quidditch: Reserve Keeper for Slytherin House team 1991-1996 Awards, etc.: Prefect 1993-1996 Wand: Hawthorn and dragon heartstring, eleven inches. Broomstick: Nimbus 1700 Organizations and affiliations: Slytherin reserve Quidditch Keeper, dueling club Skills: Quidditch, Potions, Arithmancy Patronus: Hippogriff Boggart: Alastor Moody Other facts
Like most Slytherin prefects, he took snakelets under his wing. His favorites included his younger sister Daena, her friend Lydia Culhain, and future Quidditch star Emmanuel Vaisey.
He has a complex relationship with Daena, who was always their parents’ favorite, which led him to resent her. However, she had always been a loving sister to him, which made him feel guilty for his feelings of resentment.
Being a pure-blood, he is related to all of the other pure-blood families. In addition to the relatives listed above, Evan Rosier was his uncle, and through his great-uncle Cygnus, he's related to everyone named on the Black Tapestry.
Alastor Moody is somewhat of a family "boogey man", which is why Moody is his boggart.
He wasn't a member of the Inquisitorial Squad, but still disliked the Defense Association for what they did to his friend and roommate Graham Montague.
He's fluent in French due to having relatives in Brittany, who his family visit every summer.
His cousin Urien was part of the Beauxbatons delegation during the Triwizard Tournament.
TV Tropes that apply to him:
Bi The Way: He had a slight boycrush on Snape throughout his school years.
Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The brunet to Edmund's blond and Aislinn's redhead.
Brainy Brunet
Cool Big Bro
Genius Sweet Tooth
Long-Haired Pretty Boy
Proud Beauty: A rare male example.
Real Men Wear Pink: Generally very masculine, but has long hair and takes pride in his androgynous good looks.
Aislinn Maeve Gilchrist Ancestry: Half-blood. Family: Parents Diarmuid Gilchrist and Caitlin Gilchrist, aunt Diahann Gilchrist Friends: Conrad Griffith, Edmund Blackwell Birthdate: 1 March 1978 Location of childhood home: Ireland. Pet: Tawny owl Eye color: Blue. Hair color: Strawberry blonde, wavy, just below shoulder-length First year at Hogwarts: 1989 House: Slytherin Quidditch: N/A Awards, etc.: Prefect 1993-1996 Wand: Ash and unicorn hair, twelve inches Broomstick: None Organizations & affiliations: Charms club, dueling club. Skills: Charms, Potions, Astronomy. Patronus: Fox Boggart: Her father disowning her Other facts
Her father Diarmuid is a registered Animagus who turns into a fox, which is why her Patronus is a fox.
Her father and her aunt Diahann were an example of twins being sorted into different houses - Diarmuid into Ravenclaw and Diahann into Hufflepuff.
She resents Quidditch getting more attention than other clubs and activities, and will only attend games if Conrad is playing.
She had a crush on Conrad for a while, but later realized that she had feelings for his sister Daena. They officially became a couple three years after the Second Wizarding Gang Rumble.
TV Tropes that apply to her:
Bi The Way
Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The redhead to Conrad's brunet and Edmund's blond.
Daddy's Girl
Fiery Redhead
Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Edmund's blue.
Tomboy with a Girly Streak
Tomboy and Girly Girl: Tomboy to Daena's Girly Girl.
Edmund Thomas Blackwell Ancestry: M*ggl*-born (paternal great-grandmother was a Squib). Family: Parents Herbert Blackwell and Martha Blackwell, older brother Christopher Blackwell, younger sister Allison Blackwell Friends: Conrad Griffith, Aislinn Gilchrist, Adrian Pucey, Graham Montague, Rhys Prosser Birthdate: 17 February 1978 Location of childhood home: Northern England Pet: None Eye color: Hazel. Hair color: Ash blonde, short in the front, long in the back. Started growing a beard at 15. Other physical characteristics: Tall and solidly-built. First year at Hogwarts: 1989 House: Slytherin Quidditch: N/A Awards, etc.: None Wand: Rowan and phoenix feather, twelve and three-quarters inches Broomstick: None Organizations & affiliations: Dueling club Skills: Potions, Transfiguration, dueling. Patronus: Alsatian Boggart: A giant snake
He always felt overlooked as the middle child of his siblings, so he was ecstatic after getting his Hogwarts letter, because that made him the special one for once.
Although he doesn’t look like it, he’s a voracious reader. His favorite genre is historical fiction.
As a M*ggl*-born, he was distraught at being sorted into Slytherin, but was surprised to be not only be accepted, but welcomed.
Through his Squib great-grandmother, he is a third cousin to Kevin of "You bust slug!" fame.
Unlike most Hogwarts students, he actually enjoys History of Magic. In fact, he was the only one of the Iridium Trio to get his History NEWT.
He was the Slytherin in his year who tried to swim down to the common room window.
Ironically, he's afraid of snakes.
He’s also afraid of heights, which is why he doesn’t play Quidditch despite having a good Beater’s build.
His Patronus is an Alsatian because he has one at home.
He was disappointed that he wasn't old enough to put his name in the Goblet of Fire, but after Cedric's death, he realized that if he had put his name in and been chosen, he would be dead, causing him to enter a period of existential angst.
TV Tropes that apply to him:
Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The blond to Conrad's brunet and Aislinn's redhead.
Face of a Thug: Despite being the most menacing-looking of the Iridium Trio, he’s also the kindest.
Gentle Giant
Middle Child Syndrome
Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Aislinn's red.

AROOJ AFTAB / Vulture Prince

1000 Albums, 2020: The Big Lists
Hey folks, I’ve written up my top albums and my top tracks of 2020, but there’s so much music released in a year, and restricting myself to just 30 albums, and 50 tracks is a difficult task.
As a result, I’ve compiled a longer list of my top tracks and albums (without write-ups), for your perusal. This is obviously more for the sake of completeness, but are here in case you’re interested in finding out if I at all rated something you liked this year (or, if you’re Sam, if you want to actually do a detailed comparison).
Want playlists? I’ve got playlists for you too:
My Top 50 Countdown - which I posted yesterday. This provides a sorted countdown of my top tracks from #1 to #50. (50 tracks)
My Top Tracks - a longer list of all the tracks I really rated highly this year. This accounts for a much larger number of artists, and includes most of the tracks I’ve listed below. (169 tracks)
My Top Tracks & Albums - a playlist containing all my top tracks, plus selections from all of my favourite albums of the year. (216 tracks)
My Top Tracks, Albums + Much, Much More - Are you game? Contains a huge, varied collection of music that we listened to this year. I really enjoyed all these tracks, and they provide a much broader collection of albums, artists and genres. (1,014 tracks)
