Garvey hissed moving out of the way before the sword could hurt him and deflected it easily with his dagger. His right hand adorned with a sword and his left with a dagger. As usual a crowd had formed around him and his personal guard to watch them spar, a friendly daily occurrence, sometimes you came to watch him along with his siblings and sometimes you his stepfather decided to join. This day however you both were busy preparing for a petition, his old family the Grey family was coming soon. Garvey was twenty and six now, at the hight of his strength.
His older brothers who were twins were fighting over lands and the title of Lord, again. Garvey raised his foot and kicked his guard in the chest sending him on his back powerless and moved to place his sword at the guard's neck and his dagger over his stomach.
"I yield" The guard called, two words Garvey had heard from the same man every single day for the passed three or so years. Garvey smirked and moved to stand up straight and helped the guard up.
The crowd around them exploded into applause for him. The Grey that was raised among dragons. His hair was long enough to reach his shoulder but he tied the front of it back to show his face, to show his scar like his stepfather told him to do, show it proudly. Maegor had gifted him a ruby to place in place of his eye and now he had one grey eye and one red eye.
His remaining eye paused when the gates opened and two wagon houses rolled in with the flags of house Grey waving in the wind. Garvey turned to his sister Maena who was ten and six, the only one of his siblings to have showed up that day to watch him, not surprising considering the fact that they were in love and in the process of convincing his mother and her father to let them marry instead of marrying her to her younger brother Aegon. She gave him a small smile and moved to wrap her arm around his.
"Come brother, you must wash before the petition" She scolded. he obeyed and let her pull him away from the crowd and into the Red Keep again.
Garvey bathed quickly and changed to wear the clothes you probably sent for him, black trousers with a red tunic to top it, the colours of house Targaryen. When he stepped into the throne he was announced by one of the guards.
"Lord Garvey of house Targaryen and Mormont" The entire Grey family whipped around to look at him, he was announced by the last name of his stepfather and his mother, your last name, Mormont, it was unheard of to be announced by the house name of the mother.
Maegor smirked watching their reactions atop his throne of swords and turned to look at you. You were glaring at your old stepdaughter whose son was the one to maim your son but when Garvey stepped in your face morphed into a proud smile watching him strut closer to the throne. The Grey family moved to the sides forming a walkway for him leading to the throne, some of the women gasped in horror at the sight of the scar and missis eye uncovered and instead a ruby in its place. Garvey bowed to Maegor before moving to stand by your side.
Maena snicked by Maegor's other side at their reactions. Maegor face softened when he looked at her admiring Garvey and him smiling back at her from the other side. Aegon who was only ten and two, the age where he despised his older sister and thought all girls disgusting. Beside Aegon stood your third child from Maegor and the last, a little son of five namedays who was called Viserys.
"You're late, Garvey" Maegor scolded, however his tone was light and made Garvey raise a teasing eyebrow.
"Apologies, father" Garvey's heart fluttered with joy at the horrified gasps.
"What is the meaning of this?" Dannis, the oldest of the twins hissed glaring up at the king.
"Why is our brother calling your grace father? Disrespectful shit needs to be punished, your grace, we apologise for our uneducated brother" Laina, his sister scrambled to say, trying to get on the good graces of Maegor. The sister who taught her son that what he did ti Garvey was okey because he was weak. Maegor burst out laughing much to their shock. You giggled behind your hand.
"No one will touch my son, Lady Laina, Garvey is the son I did not father but raised and soon he will be the husband of my eldest and heir, Maena" Maegor gestured to Maena. She gasped turning to look at her father as if awaiting him to say that it was a joke but he did not. You winced a little finding this queer but did not spoke up, your children loved each other and the King himself betrothed them, you had no say in the matter so you chose to ignore the fact that they were siblings and was happy for them.
"An honour, your grace" Laina stumbled a little. Her son's eyes were wide looking around before settling on Maena, that fucker. Garvey's fists clenched when he noticed who that little shit was looking.
"But wouldn't my son, Randar, be a better match? he is whole after all" Laina pushed her son closer to the throne. Your hand snapped to Maegor's shoulder squeezing it tightly, furry build into your form when she dared to look at you and smirk.
"Lady Laina, it would do you well to learn your place. Slandering my wife's first born will end with your head on a spike!" Maegor yelled, slamming his hand down on the metal handle of the throne, one of the rings on his fingers hitting the metal harder than the rest letting the sound of metal echo around the room. "His lost eye does not make him any less of a man"
"Garvey" Your calm voice followed Maegor's loud and booming voice. You took a step forward letting your hand slide down Maegor's arm and let him hold your hand instead. Garvey turned to look at you instead of glaring at his sister.
"Do tell me son, when was the last time you lost a fight either in the training yard or at a tourney?" You asked, calm on the outside but fuming on the inside and Maegor knew from the deathly grip you had on his hand but he did not mention it, he never complained and instead always said he was too strong to fell pain from it.
"Three years ago mother" Garvey answered, a smirk returned to his face. You smiled proudly and turned to look at Randar.
"When was the last time you won a tourney?" You asked. Maegor smirked noticing the change in the question.
"Never" Randar mumbled ashamed. Laina wanted to jump at you and kill you in your spot but you were queen now, she could not do that.
"In that case who is the better match husband? One who never looses a fight and can protect our daughter or one that never one a fight and probably would push our daughter in face of danger to save himself?" You asked turning to Maegor. He raised your intertwined hands and placed a kiss on one of the rings he had gifted you, it was a ruby in the middle of a gold band, a ruby of the same colour of Garvey's eye.
"I think there is no comparison, sweet wife" Maegor answered. Garvey looked down at Randar who huffed annoyed, rolling his eyes. That broke Garvey's control and made him pull out his dagger stalking over to his nephew and pulled him closer by the collar with the dagger to his throat.
"You dare roll your eyes at your king?" Randar's eyes widened in shock. Laina tried prying Garvey off her son but her strength was nowhere near his.
"Garvey, let the fool go, he is not worth your energy" Maena called from beside her father. Garvey sighed feeling weakened by her voice alone. He closed his remaining eyes to compose himself before pushing his nephew off making hims tumble and fall on his behind. Randar was horrified to find that Garvey's maimed eye did not close and remained open.
"Now back to your petition, Lords Dannis, Laroy" Maegor ended the argument turning to the order brothers who were silent the entire time. Probably the smartest decision they have ever made in their lives.
"Your grace" Laroy shakily stepped to the middle so he could petition for himself. Garvey put away his dagger before moving to stand by Maena instead of his mother this time. Maena reached between them to grab his hand in her own, he maybe older than her by ten namedays but she was the one with the more patience and the one to anchor him.

I love Maegor but people who unironically say he is a feminist or was misunderstood just pisses me off 🤮
my personal interpretation was that he named aerea heir bc he was obsessed with rhaena and wanted to "appropriate" her daughter as a means of bringing her (rhaena) closer to him
but, while i find that idea intriguing, it has nothing to do with him being a secret feminist :)) it's safe to say he had a weird fixation on women in general, i don't even think gender equality or inequality is remotely the right framework for whatever was going on in maegor's head
also tyanna was a particularly manipulative and sadistic person, specifically suited for that position. maegor most likely wanted an unhinged person as master of whisperers and there wasn't anyone more unhinged and whom he trusted more than tyanna. truly breaking the glass ceiling here 💪

Chapter Summary: Maena and Maellys arrive at court, where they are greeted by Lord Varys, The Master of Whispers.
It had been a long trip to King's Landing for Maellys and Maena. Their father, Ser Robart Rivers, had arranged for them to spend the summer in King's Landing at old King Viserys's court. He would accompany them to the Red Keep and then return to his castle in the Riverlands. As they approached the city gates, Maellys couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement mixed with apprehension. She had heard stories of the court of King Viserys, of the intrigue and politics that went on behind closed doors. Maena, on the other hand, seemed completely unfazed, her sharp black eyes scanning their surroundings with a cool detachment.
As they made their way through the bustling city streets, they caught glimpses of the Red Keep towering above them. Maellys felt her heart skip a beat at the sight of it. She had always been fascinated with the Targaryen dynasty, and the prospect of being in the same place where so much history had taken place was thrilling. Her father told her that there would even be a chance that she might catch a glimpse of one of the mighty dragons.
Finally, they arrived at the gates of the Red Keep. Ser Robart had instructed them to present themselves to the Master of Whispers, Lord Varys, upon their arrival. As they made their way through the labyrinthine halls of the castle, Maellys couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. "Maena?", she whispered, tucking a strand of her silky black hair behing her pale ear. Her sister glanced over at her. "Not now. We shall talk freely once we have been introduced to Lord Varys and shown around the Red Keep."
Maellys nodded, trying to hide her nerves as they approached the door to Lord Varys's chambers. Ser Robart knocked, and the door was opened by a bald man with a pale, slimy complexion. "Welcome, my lord," he said, bowing low to Ser Robart. "And welcome to you, young ladies. Lord Varys is expecting you. Please, come in."
They entered the dimly lit room, and Lord Varys rose to greet them. "Welcome to King's Landing, young ladies," he said, with a slight bow. "I am Lord Varys, the Master of Whispers. Your father has instructed me to take care of you during your stay here. Please, make yourselves comfortable."
Maellys and Maena sat down on the plush velvet chairs in front of Lord Varys's desk and watched their Father retreat to the back of the room. Lord Varys poured them each a goblet of wine and began to ask them about their journey. Maellys started chattering away, telling him all about their journey through the riverlands. Maena on the other hand tried her best to stay as quiet as possible. Why should she speak to the Master of Whispers? Moreover, why would her father entrust them to Lord Varys for what he described as a 'simple, enjoyable summer at court'?
As Lord Varys listened to Maellys's story, his eyes flicked over to Maena. He had long ago learned to be observant, to read people's expressions and body language for any hidden meaning. He could see the tension in Maena's posture, the way she kept her eyes focused on her goblet of wine. He knew that there was more to her than met the eye.
Lord Varys's eyes narrowed when Maena met his gaze to ask him a question. Despite the pleasantries, his face showed no signs of a congenial old man."Tell me, Maena," he said suddenly, fixing his gaze on her. "What do you think of King's Landing so far?"
Maena looked up, surprised to be addressed directly. "It's... impressive," she said carefully. "But I reserve judgement until I have seen more of it."
Lord Varys nodded thoughtfully. "Wise words," he said. "King's Landing can be both beautiful and dangerous, depending on how one navigates it. I take it that you know our royal family?" Maena's eyebrows raised at the question. "I know of them," she said coolly. "My sister and I have studied the history of the Seven Kingdoms extensively."
Lord Varys smiled, revealing a set of perfectly white teeth. "Then I'm sure you'll have no trouble fitting in at court," he said. "But you must remember, the court can be a treacherous place. It's important to keep your wits about you at all times."
Maena nodded, her eyes glinting with understanding. She knew that Lord Varys was trying to warn her of the dangers that lurked in the shadows of the Red Keep. But she wasn't afraid. She had been trained to handle herself in any situation, and she was confident in her abilities concerning scheming Ladies.
As the conversation continued, Maellys found herself growing more and more fascinated by Lord Varys. He seemed to know everything about everyone in the castle, and he spoke in hushed tones. He nodded thankfully at Lord Rivers, who in turn got up and pressed a hasty kiss on his daughter's heads and excused himself. "Take care, my sweet ones.", he said and gave Lord Varys a stern look. "I shall look forward to return after a successful summer, my Lord." Lord Varys gave him a cunning smile and bid him farewell.
Maellys, who by now was enruptured by the Red Keep, gave Maena her cup and turned fully towards the Master of the Whispers, her dress shifting beautifully over her lap. The lace was made of soft silks, with tiny golden thread forming flowers. The silk was exquisite and kissed her skin like a lover's touch."Please, do tell us more about the princes! Aegon and Aemond - how are they? What are they like? Do we have a chance to see them?"
Lord Varys smiled at Maellys's enthusiasm. "Ah, the princes," he said. "Aegon and Aemond are both very different, yet equally fascinating. Aegon is the elder of the two, and he is known for his quick wit and capability of being a superb entertainer. Aemond is a skilled swordsman and a fierce competitor in the tourneys. He also spends a lot of his time in the library, poring over ancient tomes and manuscripts."
Maellys's eyes widened in excitement. "I would love to see them in a tourney or a Feast!", she exclaimed. "Do you think there will be one while we're here?"
Lord Varys nodded. "Oh, there will be plenty of opportunities to see the princes in action," he said. "And who knows, perhaps you might even catch the eye of one of them."
Maena rolled her eyes at her sister's naive interest for the Targaryen men. However, Lord Varys seemed to take note of the exchange between the sisters. He leaned forward, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "But my ladies, the princes are not the only ones who seek attention from the young ladies of the court," he said, his eyes darting between them. "There are many other men who would be interested in getting to know you better."
Maellys blushed at the suggestion, but Maena's expression remained unchanged. "Thank you, Lord Varys," Maena said coolly. "But we are not here to find suitors. We are here to enjoy the summer and to learn about the workings of the court."
Lord Varys smiled in response. "Of course, my lady," he said. "But I would be remiss if I did not mention the possibilities that await you here in King's Landing. It is a city of secrets and desires, and you never know what might happen."
After being shown around the Red Keep, Lord Varys showed them their chambers. "I wish you a good afternoon, my Ladies. I shall see you again at this evening's Feast.Your Guards will take great care of you." With that, the old man slowly crept away from them, leaving the twins to their own devices, their guards silently standing in front of their rooms. Maellys nervously fixed her lavish updo and squeezed her sister's shoulder. "I shall go and visit the garden. The letter to mother will not write itself.", she said nervously.
Nodding, Maena gave her a sweet smile. "I shall join you as fast as I can. I wish to change my attire lest you wish to outshine me." Maellys grinned. "'Tis not my fault that I like to be pretty all of the time." Maena gave her twin a well-meaning eyeroll and went into her chamber. Gesturing her maid to bring forth a beautifully decorated emerald gown, she stripped and sat down on a small stool. As she was being dressed, her mind wandered back to Lord Varys's words. She couldn't help but feel a sense of unease at the thought of the court's hidden desires and secrets. She had always been taught to be cautious around men, especially those in positions of power. But she couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more going on in the Red Keep.
Once she was dressed, Maena stood in front of the mirror, admiring her outfit. The emerald gown hugged her curves in all the right places, and the intricate beading sparkled in the light. It made a soft swishing and rustling noise as the skirts flowed in the breeze of the open window. Her black hair framed her round, pale face as it cascaded out of her updo onto her beautifully rounded shoulders. She felt confident and powerful, ready to face whatever the court had in store for her.
As she exited her chamber, she saw Maellys waiting for her, her face lit up with excitement. "Come on," Maellys said, grabbing her arm. "Let's go explore the garden."
The garden was even more beautiful than Maena had imagined. The garden was a maze of flowers, leaves and vines. Roses of every variety lined the outer perimeter, their petals in every shade of red and pink imaginable. Delicate daisies and yellow daffodils decorated the walkways and stone benches, their vibrant colors and cheerful fragrance filling the air.
The garden was deserted; the only sign of life were a few birds chirping in the distance. She beelined towards a grand wooden bench, intricately carved with flowers and fairies, leaving Maellys to explore its vast grounds. Sitting down, she sighed with relief and let the sun's warmth seep into her bones.
Maellys wandered even further from her sister, trying her best to find a quiet spot to write. The sound of the quill scratching on the parchment was like music to her ears. She lost herself in the writing, half-forgetting where she was. Suddenly, she heard footsteps behind her. She looked up to see a woman standing there, her expression unreadable. She was dressed in a beautiful green dress, her reddish-brown hair tucked heatly into a simple bun at the nape of her neck.
Seeing the royal insignia on her, Maellys suddenly shot up and dipped into a low curtsy. "Your Royal Highness, Queen Alicent...", she mumbled awkwardly. Even though she had been excited to meet the court later on, nothing could have prepared her to meet the Queen. The Queen smiled warmly at Maellys. "Rise, my dear," she said. "There's no need to be so formal. I came here to have a chat with you."
Maellys felt a wave of trepidation wash over her. What could the Queen possibly want with her? She straightened up, her heart racing with nervous anticipation. "Your Royal Highness," she said, her voice shaking slightly. "How may I be of service?"
The Queen sat down next to her, regal and poised as ever. "I wanted to inquire about your stay in the Red Keep," she said, giving her a sweet smile. "I hope everything is to your liking."
Maellys nodded, her tongue tied in her mouth. She had never been in the presence of someone so important before. "Yes, Your Royal Highness," she said. "Lord Varys has been very kind in showing us around."
The Queen smiled. "Yes, Lord Varys is a valuable member of the King's court," she said. "But I wanted to ask you something else. Something that is close to my heart."
Maellys looked at the Queen, her black eyes wide with curiosity. "Anything, Your Royal Highness," she said.
The Queen leaned closer to her, her breath hot on Maellys's ear. She smelled like fresh linen, sweet and pleasant. "I have a favor to ask of you," she said. "Something that only someone as young, pious and beautiful as you could help me with."
Maellys's heart skipped a beat at the suggestion. She pulled back slightly, unsure of what the Queen was asking of her. Her back was so stiff that it hurt. "What kind of favor, Your Royal Highness?" The Queen's gaze was intense, studying her closely. "It is a simple request, my dear," she said. "I merely wish for you to be present at a private gathering. One that will be attended by only the most distinguished members of the court."
Maellys's heart raced with excitement at the prospect of attending such an event, but something about the Queen's request made her uneasy. "I would be honored, Your Royal Highness," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. "But may I ask what kind of gathering it will be?"The Queen smiled, her eyes glinting with a mischievous light. "It is a secret, my dear," she said. "But I promise you, it will be a night you will never forget."
Maellys hesitated, unsure of whether or not she should accept the Queen's offer. But the thought of attending a private gathering, one that held the promise of secrets and desires, was too tempting to resist. "I will attend, Your Royal Highness. What about my sister?" she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
The Queen's smile widened. "Maena will also be invited, my dear," she said. "She too possesses a beauty that is rare and valuable in the court. News of her cunning and wit have reached our ears - we would be delighted to experience it."
Maellys felt a sense of relief wash over her. She couldn't imagine attending such an event without her sister by her side. "Thank you, Your Royal Highness," she said. "We will be there."The Queen stood up, her green dress flowing gracefully around her. "Splendid," she said, her voice full of satisfaction. "I look forward to seeing you both there. It will be a night to remember."
As the Queen left, Maellys couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss, that there was more to the Queen's request than she was letting on. But she pushed those thoughts aside, her mind already wandering to the excitement and intrigue of the upcoming gathering.
Maellys watched her go, her mind whirling with possibilities. What could the Queen have in store for her? And why did she feel such a sense of unease about it? She quickly rushed towards Maena, who was snoring quietly away. "Mae!", she whispered and shook her awake. "Wake up! We have to get ready..."

Thoughts on Maegor i and Aenys i ?
not a ton of super developed thoughts, but i did ponder a bit on targaryen foundational myths here with the choice of these two very, very different personalities as brothers. i also have a maegor tag for some fun back-and-forth with the ole anons
generally-speaking i enjoy maegor as a character bc he is SO over-the-top and his actions are so tremendously villainous it goes into moustache-twirling territory for me & i can't take him seriously. nearly every paragraph in his story legit makes me want to make the sign of the holy cross on myself. i, a reddit atheist. (jk jk) his stans are very, very strange though. i'm wary of targnation people who say they like maegor; they manage to come up with the most headache-inducing takes.
that being said!!! i feel like there should be more maegor content?? like, there are so many interesting - and dark! - avenues fans could explore via headcanons and fics. for example, i kind of think maegor/rhaena has a lot of potential as the fandom's next problematic ship that could start wars and get people cancelled? off the page she does feel a little like the one who got away in that visenya's marriage proposal between maegor and rhaena gets rejected, but he still ends up marrying her. you could even say he goes out of his way to do it?? by killing her brother-husband and defying the Faith's dogma (yet again!!) to marry her?? he even names her daughter aerea as his heir??
i mean, he was relentless in trying to get a son of his own, so there wasn't really any need for him to do that. he went so long without a named heir and took three (!) additional wives for this very purpose, so why would he suddenly feel the need to name a little girl? i wonder if he didn't do it out of some sentiment, since that little girl was rhaena's specifically. if he were to die without children, why would he even care who succeeded him anyway? jaehaerys and alysanne were also alive, yet he chose aerea specifically.
also rhaena is said to have tried to kill him during their wedding night, so that sounds pretty spicy! yet maegor with the terrible temper tantrums is not mad at her and names her daughter his heir the next day? while disinheriting jaehaerys? crazy! but! when rhaena flees!! he orders the hightowers to behead rhaella as punishment! what a silly goofy guy hhhehe! idk, i just find it interesting.
maegor also seems to have a bit of a power struggle with alyssa velaryon as well, i'm surprised he didn't try to marry her too. there is something to this idea of maegor ridding himself of his male relatives so as to rule over / control the female members of his family. maegor as the most unlikely (and awful) president of the targaryen ladies fanclub - there's a concept to ruminate over
another one of maegor's marriages which i find under-discussed is his first one, with ceryse hightower. the high septon's niece. not the most well-matched couple, though? she's 23, he's 13. so why? an attempt at assimilation mayhaps? the hightowers trying to integrate the targaryens further into westerosi society? (the faith was opposed to his marriage to rhaena) in any case, they were married for 14 years before maegor got a second wife, yet we have no information on how they got along. ceryse always maintained she was maegor's rightful and only wife. the dynamic with alys and tyanna must have been insane.
to come back a little to aenys. the idea that this weakling king managed to have such a fruitful marriage and sire so many children (and was popular with the ladies too!) whereas maegor was an abject failure in that regard.... lends itself to some narrative irony. :))

maegor i and rhaena…I thought I was the only one who saw something in that 👀 I can totally imagine Maegor lowkey obsessed with his niece whilst she hates his guts, peak problematic romance ❤️ I kinda wish HOTD adapted the book from the beginning or at least from Aenys and Maegor’s era as I thought their sections were very entertaining. But I guess then we would have had to sit through Jaehaerys’ storyline which is less exciting imo. Would love a flashback episode or something.
MAENA is the OG Daemyra!! He kills her husband and takes the crown from her only to crown her again as his wife! Against all reason - she hates men! Don't tell me this is not unhinged yandere behaviour. ☠ It's like nothing but the first ever Targaryen girl born after the Conquest is good enough for him, Mummy's first choice of bride for her miracle dark magic baby! 🙏
There's no reason to believe that we won't get any more shows based off different time periods in Fire & Blood, but the problem with Maegor's storyline is that it's really, really brutal. While Henry VIII and his many wives are really popular material for screen adaptations, Maegor truly surpasses him in every way in terms of abuse and cruelty and I don't really think we need to see more stories based on brutality against women. At least when it's in print, you can fast-forward through the paragraphs, but would we really need to see what happens to Alys Harroway and her family in graphic detail?
One way to avoid this would, naturally, be to sanitize Maegor and make him less awful, but, again, that's not the point of him. He's not really called "the cruel" for nothing. I suppose it could work if you don't really show Maegor all that much and he just appears every now and then, focusing the story on Aenys' brood. But then again you wouldn't really be able to expand on his character.
My grand idea to adapt Maegor's story would be use the sitcom format, complete with laugh track, even when his lines are gruesome and not funny, and kept the brutality suggested in the background. It would amplify the horror in a more psychological way, as opposed to all the gore.
#drop your maegor asks while it's hot bc i close anon off again!!#i still have nigh 30 asks in my inbox so i have to if i ever hope to get anything done 😩#ask#maegor i targaryen#maegor the cruel#anon#dreamfyre rhaena#maena#sorry i can't use rhaegor as the ship name; we'd need to diversify a little#otherwise everything will become unsearchable

Would Maegor arrange a marriage between Maena and his stepson?
This could go either way to be honest. For instance maybe now that Maegor saw that he can have children maybe he would not marry Maena to her older half brother and instead try to keep her for a pure blooded Valyrian-Targaryen brother instead. He would want pure blooded grandchildren on the throne after him. The fact that his step son does not ride a dragon (since he is not from Valyria) could also push the idea further away from his mind.
At the same time if he were unable to conceive after Maena he would probably marry her to her older half brother considering he raised him from when he was ten years old. He also trusts his wife to have taught her son to treat his sister well which a bonus.
