Smoke Detector

@ghouljams has been writing a lot of superb blurbs about Fae!Price from their Fae Cod Au, and by god am I loving it. I love the way that Price's magic manifests as smoke both as a conscious action and as an unconscious one as he gently and covertly influences the world and people around him.

On that thought, all I could think of is Mal meeting him for the first time and being like bruh, you're getting your magic everywhere tf. And as soon as they get home they make themselves a magically imbued mask to keep the smoke at bay. This mask is very specific and is designed solely to combat volatile/aerosolized magic, so it's not like this can double up as a covid or other illness mask. It only does the bare minimum in that regard in the sense that any barrier is better than none, but it's not exactly designed to filter out corporeal particulates like viruses or wildfire smoke.

I've drawn Mal on here a couple times already, and I will be the first to admit that I am at the very start of my artistic journey. I have some technical drawing under my belt (think building schematics) but no experience with organic shapes. Since I wanted to draw this mask, I took this opportunity to study 3D shapes of the face and shadows, by tracing and referencing a photo by @ redsreferences on instagram! It was interesting seeing how the suggestion of shadows could trick your brain into perceiving flat colors as having form and dimension!! I had a lot of fun with this, and I look forward to practicing more and gaining confidence so that I don't feel the need to trace.

Been trying to push for more full body poses and actually drawing proper clothing. Folds are hard but I'm happy with how these turned out so far.

My debut fantasy graphic novel Maelstrom: A Prince of Evil comes out in less than two short months, and I threw together this quick flyer for Staple Expo in Austin TX! (I can't sell the book yet, but I'll bring a comp copy to partially flip through) I initially wasn't fast enough to snag a table but my friends Sara and Natalie graciously offered to let me hang out and sell at theirs, so I'll be chilling and giving these away (and of course I'll have old stock of Otherknown books and merch, too)

Staple is from April 13-14 this year in the Mabee Ballroom at St Edward's University. If you find yourself in the area, come say hi! (and check out Sara and Natalie's amazing work!)
