L’humidité glaciale de l’hiver s’adoucie déjà et l’air matinal se fait enfin plus léger. Chaussé de souliers timides, le printemps fait son retour à Malfearn. Les quelques rares neiges fondent pour de bon, la nature encore nimbée de sommeil commence à verdir. Déjà, les forêts retrouvent leur essence et on les croirait de nouveau habitées. Au détour d’un sentier, les promeneurs aventureux découvrent ce qu’il reste des champignons automnaux, s’enivrent des premières fleurs. On flâne et on savoure. Mais comme toujours à Malfearn, l’horreur ne tarde pas à refaire surface. Au renflement d’un tronc creux, une veste découverte par un chien est identifiée comme ayant appartenu à Ruby Sinclair, déclarée disparue depuis juillet 1992. La police du coin, électrisée par la nouvelle, rouvre prestement l’enquête. Au journal et sur les postes de télévision, le visage de Ruby refait surface. L’espoir renaît et les craintes avec. La famille n’attendait plus rien du destin. Au cœur de l’agitation ambiante, les radios tressautent et chuchotent plus que jamais. Il semble que les maisons ont l’âme revêche et que les revenants se font plus palpables. Malfearn frémit. Quelque part dans les tréfonds, l’ombre grossit. Et approche.
