Mike Shinoda for MAEKAN (2018)
Mike: . Early on, the band got popular very fast. We got famous before we got money. That’s the way the music industry works.
The money is always quote unquote, the term is, “in the pipeline”, so meaning we had sold fifteen million records before I had really enough money to buy a new car. Chester was literally driving around a PT cruiser. It was pretty hysterical. And we had three number one rock songs at that point. We gave him crap for that car.
Samantha: What color was it out of curiosity?
Mike: It was sparkling purple with flames on the front. He had a friend who customized cars. He got the rims done. He got it lowered. He got flames on the front. It was glitter purple.
Samantha: I am so glad I asked that question.
Mike: It was amazing.
Samantha: So it wasn’t just your average PT Cruiser…
Mike: Oh, it was hysterical and the funny thing is too, think about the timing, when he first got it, it was like, “That’s a really nice car!” And then very quickly it was like, “Why does that guy not have like a Range Rover or a Mercedes? What is he driving that car for? I hear his song on the pop radio station all the time now and he’s driving around that piece of shit?!”
Samantha: A very modest decision.
Mike: No, it was not a modest decision. The money was in the pipeline. So, we were famous and eventually the record did what it did and we went straight into the next record. The public perception of the band was ahead of the band’s reality by a long shot, the whole way through the first two records.

By the way, the last ask about Strife saying Fuck was inspired by a comic dub You Tube video by a YouTube user named Maekan Kouya from Demon Slayer. Thought I should let you know as not to do any plagiarism.
I’m inspired to do something a little special for the last 2 asks, anon. hopefully they don’t take too long I just see it so perfectly in my head 🫶 and thank you for letting me know!
Don’t worry, I do a lot of line or content inspiration and things like that with my own work too. I like to treat it more as an Easter egg/something that I just find so fitting for the scene I’m writing for

Audiovision Blog Post week 7
1. Research (technical, academic, creative practice)
My technical research this week was understanding how to implement audio into a 360 degree environment. As Ableton is my DAW of choice I began researching on ableton specific implementation and found 'Envelop tools for Live'. This is a Ableton specific set of plugins and devices through the 'max4live' system that allow better integration between 360 video and audio.
As general panning options offer limited variation, these plugins allow for a wide range of 360 panning parameters that let you map sounds to where you want them to be in the environment.
Hong Kong-based independent creative publication, media company and brand 'Maekan' has developed and curated a 'soundwalk' page on their website. Their series 'Sounds of' takes the listener on a journey throughout Hong Kong using sonic spatial audio paired with still images to help contextualize the space. As I want the environment I create to be as authentic as possible, this page was great inspiration towards the variety of sounds and elements that I want to use. As I was previously going directly based off of what I was seeing in the animatic, this made my overall mix quite dull and flat.
From this video, specifically the one within a Hong Kong city building, I quickly built a list of various sounds that I will layer into the backing environment.
I began adding various sounds such as street traffic, construction work, and even chatter below the building and in neighbouring houses. This has resulted in instantly improving the overall immersion and authenticity of the videos envorinment and space.
2. Reflection
The talk about time management and working effectively made it clear that my current study regimen is quite ineffective regarding productivity. I have always been bad at time management and organisation when it comes to the optimisation of my workload as I always leave everything until the last minute. I wanted to make a change to how I work as I know in the future, this will not work out in an industry position. In the coming weeks I will aim to incorporate aspects of the chunking and Pomodoro techniques by planning and setting out clear goals and milestones to reach in my production. This will ultimately result in improved motivation and discipline in my work, as well as a higher quality of work as I have time to step away and reflect on my decisions.
I will also take into account some of the collaborative tips, such as working out exactly what they want and work out what you are prepared to do. By doing this it allows for better clarity of objectives, as well as set expectations of work quality and delivery. In the past I have not asked these simple questions, leading to partners completing their work incorrectly or to a lower standard.
Finally I will use some of the various study 'hacks'. These include the use of useful research tools Research Rabbit, Chat PDF and Endnote. I tend to find the research portion of my work to be unmotivating and tedious due to the amount of vague information and repeated content in general web pages and readings. By incorporating these tools I will better my referencing skills, along with find more interesting work to research and better my work through. On top of this I will also begin planning my work better as I generally just go with the flow and try and figure everything out as I go, generally leading to roadblocks and unseen troubles that decrease motivation.
3. Progress
As I am still waiting on a new animatic to be completed I am still yet to begin recording any of my sounds. I have been tirelessly working on one of my other classes big projects this week, so I spent most of my time layering and deepening the environment. I want to make my sound design quite unique inspiring wonder and intrigue so I have begun devising some interesting ways of transitioning audio and mood.
Within the second half of the video, there is a transition from a flashback scene into the present. The mood is quite joyful and nostalgic, but jumps back with the mood changing back to sorrowful and depressing. I have used the music playing in the scene as a motif that is connected with the past memories of the grandpa. This music then fades and worsens in quality as he regains consciousness. The music that shifts into a bad radio quality playback in one of the neighbouring rooms. This technique is similar to the one used in the monsters Inc short animation however in reverse. The non diegetic main track then becomes diegetic noise in the background as the new score for the sad scene enters.
I have also been experimenting with a range of automation and modulation to the audio. I want to use sonic symbolism to illustrate to the audience a more realistic experience. I have started adding subtle details like slight muffling to audio beyond a certain distance, as well as white noise and low cutting high frequencies. This is done to reflect possible illness symptoms that arise around that age.
These problems will be resolved when in the flashback sequences to make it clearer to the audience the direct time shift into the past.
Current version of the video:
youtube
The only real problem I am currently having with this project is my own personal time management as I have always been bad at maintaining a steady and healthy study schedule. Following this week I will aim to progress at a more steady rate as I usually leave everything until the last minute. By incorporating some of the tips from mondays lecture I will hopefully be able to be more consistent and therefore effective in the future.

Anatomy of Thai script
"One of the big issues that remains at the core of the Thai language’s modernization in terms of type is the split between looped and loopless type designs."
Cadson Demak wanted to push the modernisation of loopless typefaces with the creation of Prompt. Looking at the image above is a "looped" typeface. Depicting the more stylistic approach of looped type which can be likened to serifs in Latin typography. The looped typeface shows common use of ascenders and descenders respectively. Along with a very common use of knots in the typeface, this overcomplicates the design of a abugida mainland Thai typeface however adds style to the typeface. Certain sections of the looped typeface share a commonality with Latin typography in regards to the use of spurs at the end of curves.
Abugida is a middle-ground between an alphabet and a syllabary. Vowels are respectively used as their own characters however need a base constant to be able to be used in context in sentences.
In practice, abugida provides accents and markings in typography to differentiate between words. This theory changes dependant on the context of whether the typography is written by hand, in prints or on screen.
The development of loop less Thai typefaces is to reduce the embellishment of the type and make it more accessible to people whether they are of native tongue. The loopless typefaces show loops becoming diminished or even implied, which to someone who is fluent can understand simply, while someone foreign such as myself can still identify particular letters.
Information gathered from Maekan.
Comparing the above accents and embellishments of the typeface to what we see here, is a "airy" and san serif typeface. Loops Thai glyphs are not commonly used unless needed too in terms to differentiation as per how abugida is used.
The type is devoid of the ascenders, descenders, spurs and crowns that it's looped counterpart presents. This makes the type appealing to people not native to Thailand and that was one of the goals Cadson Demak set out when creating this typeface.
