For once, Mike just lets the moment swallow him up. He doesn’t think of anything but the way it smells like sulfur and dew, her lavender musk and his clean earthiness. He sinks into the feeling of how their bodies press against his sides, hers small and soft, and his broad and thinly muscled. He falls into the light that makes the backs of his eyes hurt with how bright it is, the cracking boom of the fireworks above him crying out in a broken rhythm, like man-made thunder. Mike chooses not to be the explosive waiting to blow at the end of a burning wick, but instead, even if it's just for today, for this moment. For a second. He chooses to be the sparks, floating down from the sky and fizzling out into petals of ash. He chooses to let go. He wants to live in this new favorite memory for a while, so sticky sweet it will be impossible to forget.

Mike!” Max hisses angrily, shooting him a death glare out of the corner of her eye.

“What!” he exclaims. “I didn’t do anything!”

Max only rolls her eyes at him, grabbing the last of her papers, and already stomping off toward the large window where the hallway T’s and the English wing begins. He notices her gait is a little more labored than normal. Mike gathers the books and rushes after her, moving easier now that the hall’s almost empty. The late bell rings. Fucking fantastic.

He slows his pace, old Converses slapping loudly against the floor. His shoulders are tight with anxiety and anger. He grips the strap of his backpack so tightly his hand hurts.

“Come on Maaax,” he implores, throwing his arm out and breath leaving him in one big huff.

Max turns around on a dime, snatching the books out of his hand as fast as a frog snatches a fly from the air. He can tell she wants to chew him out. She’s dying to actually. Her mouth opens and she sucks in a breath in anticipation, but after a second all the venom leaves her body, and she deflates, looking tiny in her step dad’s old flannel he left in her mother’s closet. He doesn’t know why she’s wearing it. It’s too fucking hot.

She huffs. “ Look —-I’ll just—I’ll see you later. Okay?”

Mike nods at her, trying to swallow away the heaviness that threatens to smother him. She’s realizing , he thinks dejectedly.

Max looks him up and down like he’s some sort of shit needing to be wiped from her shoe. “I guess we’re fucking stuck with each other now.”
