Alma Madrigal: Hogwarts AU

Alma Madrigal is a Muggleborn witch that was born on the 13th of May 1920 and started attending Hogwarts on the 1st of September 1931, being sorted into Gryffindor house.

She was hesitant to attend Hogwarts at first due to her parents' disapproval but in the end she decided to so that she could get away from them.

When she started attending Hogwarts, she meet a fellow Gryffindor named Pedro who she eventually fell in love and married with.

Her husband was the first ever victim of the Dark Lord All For One, with Pedro being killed while on his way to St. Mungos after their triplets were born which she never moved on from.

Due to her grief and her belief that the magic which was granted to her and her husband was a miracle, she put much pressure on her family to act perfect thanks to this.

She was horrified when she found out that her granddaughter Mirabel was a Squib and thought that it was because her family's failure of working hard to earn their magic which wasn't true at all.

She eventually realized that this wasn't true and has started to get to know her grandchildren better during the Second Wizarding War as a way to make up for it.

While she wasn't an official member of the Order of the Phoenix, she was an ally due to her son being a member and offered her families' mansion as a hideout to Order members who were on the run during the war.

She has an Apple wand with a Dragon Heartstring core.

Her Patronus is a Monarch Butterfly.

Her favorite subjects were Herbology and Charms.

Alma Madrigal is a Pureblood witch that was born on the 13 of May 1917 and started attending Hogwarts on the 1st of September 1928, being sorted into Slytherin House.

She was one of the Slytherin Prefects of her year and later Head-Girl.

As the matriarch of the Madrigal Family, Alma is dedicated to doing what in her eyes is best for her family and initially hoists expectations on her children and grandchildren in how they use their talents to help the community, often taking the form of a demand for perfection. Due to her desire for perfectionism, Alma has a certain favoritism towards some members of her family without realizing the damage and insecurity it causes to other members of the family. Out of all her grandchildren, she favors her oldest granddaughter and golden child Isabela; this doting placing a lot of pressure on her while concurrently making her sisters and cousins feel inadequate living in her shadow, causing mutual resentment between her and some of them. As far as sons-in-law go, Alma preferred Félix over Agustín, due to not approving of the latter nor in him marrying Julieta, partly because she judged him harshly for his clumsiness and unwillingness to understand why her daughter chose him. Alma's expectations and desires for perfection also extended to her own children, keeping a tight grip on the to make them perfect. Unintentionally, Alma is quite neglectful with Pepa due to the problems of her magic. Alma not only ignores her when she needs help, she also often negatively criticizes her daughter for her emotional tirades and often pesters Pepa to keep her emotions under control instead of supporting her properly.

Alma tries to be patient and understanding, but from her point of view, she feels some should just step aside and do nothing without her express approval. As a result, she is very controlling and denies there is anything wrong, assuring her neighbors that all is well and that there is nothing to fear, even when the Madrigal mansion is cracking all around her and the townspeople are nervous. But the truth is, Alma knows that her home and perhaps even her family is in danger, as she privately revealed to herself, as Alma spoke with the portrait of her late husband, Pedro, revealing that Alma is afraid for her home, her family, and losing everything as they did before, and she cannot bear to go through that again, and she prays to her Pedro to help her. This displays Alma's vulnerability that she is too afraid to reveal even to her family and that Alma feels the burden of trying to preserve her family and her community, and explains why she does everything she can to protect them. Unfortunately, this fear of losing everything again, often causes her to assume the worst in a situation or even in others, including her own family. Alma would particularly doubt her only son, Bruno, since his often negative visions that tended to cause trouble lead her to believe he didn't care about their family after he left, and her granddaughter, Mirabel, as a squib made Alma look down on her and exclude her from family activities at best or, upon seeing Bruno's vision, fear her destroying the family at worst.

When she sees how her expectations of her family are unraveling because of Mirabel, Alma, misinterpreting her attempts to help as jeopardizing the magic according to Bruno's vision, jumps to conclusions without hearing her out and unfairly blames her for everything, accusing her of hurting the family out of jealousy for not being a witch. Alma further lashes out at Mirabel as she reveals she blames her for Bruno's disappearance, as well as getting angry when Isabela tarnishing her perfect image by being herself, ruining her engagement with Mariano, and Luisa begins to lose her magic, showing that Alma views them no different from the way she views Mirabel. Finally fed up with this treatment, Mirabel angrily snaps at Alma and stands up for the family, stating that no matter how hard any of them tries, magic or not, none of them will ever be good enough for her or her expectations, and that Bruno actually left because she only saw the worst in him. When Mirabel goes as far as to say that Alma is causing the family to fall apart, the older woman, initially denying this, can only be silent and shocked at these words before the mansion burst into flames as a result of their heated argument. Taking in the destruction of their home, Mirabel's words, and half of her grandchildren putting themselves in danger to save the family tree would cause Alma to realize the pressure and even unintentional misery she had been subjecting her family to.

In a sincere heart-to-heart with Mirabel by the river where her husband perished, Alma reveals more insight in their family beginnings. In the memories of her youth, Alma was once a cheerful young woman full of life who, after falling in love with Pedro, had hopes for a better future. But when her husband sacrificed his life to buy time for his family, friends, and neighbors to escape during the Third Wizarding War, Alma was left devastated and broken. Losing the love of her life, her home, and everything she knew and loved in the span of a night traumatized Alma so much that she swore it would never happen again, determined to preserve what had given them a fresh start. But over time, she lost sight of what truly mattered, unconsciously and ironically taking her miracle for granted, and forgot who it was for, and what made their family so special was not the magic but the fact that, in spite of tragedy, they are a family. It was because of this, that Alma was constantly looking outwards for a problem or even a threat similar to the people that took her husband away from her to all she held dear, that she never thought to look inward until it was too late, which is when she finally realized her family had been broken because of her and why she never considered that her well-intentioned actions were the problem.

Now understanding the pain and loss Alma had never fully healed from, along with the burden she had long carried, Mirabel assures her that it is because of her that they were saved, that they were granted a miracle, that they are a family and nothing is so broken that they could not fix together. Touched by these words, Alma finally realizes, after asking Pedro for help, that Mirabel was the answer to her prayers and they reconcile. Immediately following this, Alma also reconciles with her lost son when he suddenly appeared to confront her after a decade before she warmly hugs and kisses him while calling him "Brunito", happy to have him back despite previously having a low opinion of him for leaving their family. Alma then becomes a happier and warmer person than she was before, freeing herself from her dark past. The first thing Alma does after realizing her past mistakes and returning to the ruins of their home, is to affectionately treat her daughters before bringing Bruno back into the family. Alma reconciles with the rest of her family, apologizing for how she held on too tight out of fear she would lose them all as well, but now understands that they alone are the true miracle, not the gift of magic itself. She also happily works alongside her family and community as they rebuild the mansion, and helping to strengthen the bonds of the family to become stronger than ever.

Encanto - Wings of Fire Au

(In this au, the characters from Encanto are now dragons wings of fire. This will contain spoilers for both fandoms)

During the Tree Wars when Queen Monarch stepped down, Alma and Pedro (both silkwings) decided to lead a large group of mostly silkwings with a few hivewings that escaped the mind control and leafwings out of Pantala in the hopes that they could find a new, safer land. They didn’t have much with them, aside from some supplies, their one large egg and a candle to guide their way.

They were pursued by Queen Wasp’s army. When Pedro turned to try and reason with them, he was killed.

That was when the miracle happened, pushing away the soldiers and raising an island from the sea, surrounded with high mountains and filled with lush valleys. The candle then gave them Casita, a large, sentient silkwing hive/palace.

When the triplets hatched, instead of their being an age order, there was a size order. Julieta was the biggest and got out of the egg first. Pepa was in the middle, leaving the egg after Julieta. And Bruno was the smallest, not leaving the egg until he was taken out. Three young and wingless silkwing dragonets.

They receive their gift when they’re 2 years old (since dragons age faster), when they need to go into their cocoon, they do so in their rooms.

Most of the Madrigal family ends up being silkwings or silkwing hybrids. The exception is the husbands, Augustin is a rainwing and Felix is a sandwing.

The reason there are rainwings, sandwings and other Pyrrhian dragons in Encanto is that anyone who leaves one of the continents looking for somewhere safe to stay, they’ll be drawn to Encanto.

While Encanto functions more of a town where everyone works together, Alma is the closest thing they have to a queen.

Alma Madrigal

Goddess of Protection and Leadership Also generally recognized as the Goddess of the Encanto

Alma is seen as the one who raised the mountains around the Encanto, and the rich soil is seen as a blessing from her. While being seen as an equivalent of “Mother Earth” in the Encanto, Alma isn’t widely worshiped for providing the valley’s resources as much as she is for other, abstract things. Her symbol of mountains/earth is mostly used in artwork and gifts, not being something that she’s worshiped for specifically.

Alma’s mountains mirror Pedro’s river, the two symbols often portrayed in artwork side by side. It also adds another layer of symbolism to some of the encantan residents of Alma and Pedro being separated to protect the valley.

Alma’s altar is of her standing tall, a shield gently held in her hands. The face of the shield is painted to depict the Encanto, the artwork being repainted every time it fades. I like to think that the paint used is water based, for further symbolism, but it’s not a concrete rule that is set for the townspeople to follow.

Alma is mostly worshiped by the older residents in the valley, and she is prayed to whenever someone is seeking protection in a task or wants to do a good job in a position of leadership. Positions of leadership can go from leading a group project to parenting.

Offerings to Alma are usually anything taken from the earth, though crops are usually offered to Isabela. Stone sculptures, pottery, and some of the metals and jewels found in the mountains are common to see at her altar.

Alma goes into town almost every day, and helps with some tasks around the valley. She is usually seen in town in the mornings, as she spends the afternoons in Casita doing chores or spending time with her family.

Alma has a very relaxed schedule, and she’s much less strict than in canon. Since she was declared a goddess when the Encanto was created, she wasn’t asked to do much as the townspeople thought (and still think) that asking a goddess to do busywork would be very rude.

Alma is a calming authority figure to her grandchildren, not the strict monarch that she was in canon, so the dynamic changes a bit. Alma still believes that their gifts (or blessings, in this AU), should be used to help the community, but she doesn’t pressure them to work all day.

Time War AU Update

The draft’s been done for about a day now. Went through one beta pass, working on a second. I have read it, oh, approximately 25 times. There’s also cover art (!!) on the way which - so pumped. I’m hoping to get it all up on AO3 maybe by Sunday (art may come later, of course). 

Last week I posted a WIP of the introduction of Solas’ character. So I figured this week I’d post a part of the Lavellan character’s intro.

Ink loves her job. Is it still a ‘job’ when it’s her entire existence? She isn’t sure. But she loves it, all the same.

She knows there was a time when she was something other than what she is now. She knows this not because she can remember it, but because she has seen the evidence of it across a hundred thousand Strands. If she cared enough, and if she were willing to disobey the Author (which occasionally she is, depending what’s at stake), perhaps she’d go seek herself out. But the truth is that she loves who she is now far too much to be troubled by whatever small thing she used to be.

Ink has a vague sense that she was someone of importance, but there’s nothing novel about that idea. Across thousands of years and too many Strands to count, she’s been everyone of importance. It’s a simple thing to kill an important person before they’re important and take their place. She’s been the Maker and all the Paragons, Emperors, and Archons. She’s been Calenhad and Queen Madrigal and Maferath. Of all of them, Andraste is her favorite. Ink always puts on a show when it comes time for the Lady of Sorrow’s death, writhing and moaning on the pyre as if being caressed by a lover rather than sacrificed to start a new religion. She likes to believe all the greatest artistic depictions of Andraste in the flames are based on her performances.

But Ink’s greatest hits as Andraste aside (she ranks Strand 3287 as her best, with Strand 8802 as a close second), she’s well aware that it’s often the unimportant people who are most important to the Story. It’s even simpler to take the place of a queen’s handmaiden than it is the queen herself, and often the handmaiden is infinitely more useful to the Author’s plans. Ink doesn’t care if she’s a servant or a monarch - it’s infiltration itself that she loves. 

Ink has spent three dozen lifetimes training with the Crows. She’s killed for them and has been killed by them. In all of known history (and the known future), no one does infiltration better than they do, and she likes to learn from the best. Today, she’s back in Antiva City and it feels like a second home - or maybe it would if she had anywhere that really felt like a first home. So, to revise: Ink is back in Antiva City and it feels like home.

Um??? Within canon?? To some extent, yes. Or at the very least, in similar fashion to Raya it Moana, the immediate family member to one of, if not the highest ranking person within their community. Or maybe like Asha, she's technically not a princess but it considered very important to the community by the end of the movie.
